    Muscle Mass Loss

They have this type of scale at my surgeons office. It showed my %bf was 50 when I first went. Then a week later it had dropped to 49 and I had lost 9 pounds. (preop). When I was there for my two week checkup after surgery... it was 41% and I had lost 18 pounds. I had a kidney stone and a lot of fluids pumped in so two weeks after that it went back up to 45% fat and I weighed 217! I didnt understand how it could go up in fat % but the weight about the same. The PA said it was either a misread the time before, or the way the scale works and it might be all the Fluid retention. I was very puzzled over this. I wonder how they really do work. She tried to explain to me that it subtracts everything else and whats left is supposed to be the fat % but Water retention can make a difference in the numbers. Makes no sense to me. I know I didnt gain any fat over those two weeks. I ate nothing! I was in too much pain. I only sipped water and had pain meds and fluids! I dont know that i would chalk that up to lost muscle mass just yet. It could be other things according to my dr. ?? I am confused about how they work and I dont know that it means you are loosing muscle mass. I am going to try to figure out how they really work and I will let you know what I find out!
  2. You are just about to go on solid foods. My doctor has us on "soft foods" the last three weeks. That includes things like cottage cheese and fish. I would absolutely steer clear of any breads, pastas, rice. But if there are fish dishes you can get, you can probably have those. Especially with some kind of sauce to help soften it. Don't touch any fruit with a skin (like grapes) or any pulpy fruits...that could be bad. Really, just judge the consistency of stuff and be sensible. You are so close to being on solids that if you see something you want I imagine you could have it if you are careful. To be quite honest, I followed my doctor's orders to the LETTER about the 30 days before solids. When I went in to get my fill and I told them I had just started solid foods on day 31 they were SHOCKED. They said MOST people don't follow it to the letter.

    One year surgiversary!

Wow amazing!! 130 is what I want to lose. How is the excess skin?? That worries me the most, especially being single.
  4. For those of you who have gone through the process. My husband and I are going to do this journey together. We have already spoken with our family physician and she documented our BMI and has given up lab slips. We are going through our insurance for coverage. I have found 3 doctors so far who take our insurance and do the procedure and the problem I am finding is they want us to quit smoking 3 months prior to filling out the application. Which I don't mind at all, anything to do this the successful way but I am wondering, if I wait the 3 months, take all the necessary tests and loose the 10% weight I am required to loose BEFORE my consultation would that set me back? As in, if I go to my consultation appt in 3 months after having quit smoking, will they require me to loose another 10%? (That would be about 40 lbs if they do- with the first 10%) Also do they expand your stomach (during the surgery) with gas? These are questions I'd probably get to ask in a consultation, but they won't even talk to us until we quit smoking. How often do you go in for fills? How do you determine how often you go in? Thank you in advance!
  5. Had my first appointment with the surgeon this morning. Lots of information and I'm a little overwhelmed. They explained all 3 options they provide - roux en y, sleeve and band. They explained the typical success rates of each and how much weight I could expect to loose with each based on the averages of their 3000 patients. Now I'm even more confused than I was before. He said he can't recommend 1 surgery over another, but that I'd see the greatest results with the bypass. However, he also said I'm the perfect candidate for the band because I'm young and have few health problems and no mobility issues. The target he set for a healthy bmi is a loss of 132 pounds (I can't believe I'm carrying around an extra person, I've been in denial). He said based on the averages I'd loose 75% with the bypass, but only maybe 30-40% with the band. He stressed this is only an average....but there's no way to known if I'll be average or outstanding. He also said the band doesn't always work. I hate the thought of going thru the surgery and seeing no result. His PA said if it were here, she would go "all in" and get the bypass. She described the band as "you on your best diet." They said I don't have to decide until we set the surgery date. I'm just feeling really overwhelmed and this is the first place I wanted to go.

So lost in regular women's clothing!

Oh the joys of being able to just shop again... I sooo can't wait for that day. LoL as for Bra fittings you get a better idea of what style/size bra you need if it's sized with out a bra. Anytime I've been sized I remove my bra put back on my shirt and let the lady do her part on finding me the right size. And no you are never to old to shop victoria secret.. My sister in law is 42 and still shops there. Grant it she has a small small build, but still she shops there, and we will be small soon enough right? I just can't wait to shop clearance. LoL I told my husband there are always wonderful clothes on clearance, but they are always to small, and they NEVER have any 2x-3x shirts that would fit me on clearance. I can't wait for the day I can shop and walk out with a new wardrobe for the same price of 2 new outfits in the plus clothes.. I am sooooo lighting up right now with the thought of all the clothes I'm going to buy. I may not have any fashion sence but gosh darn it I have a sister in law that dresses sooooo cute, and can help me along the way to learn what suits me and what doesn't.. Have fun shopping "just don't over do it, your still loosing the weight" and forget what other people my think...

    VERY ITCHY!

Yeah, I had a major allergic reaction to the steri strips. Itched and stung like crazy and the skin on my stomach turned bright red and hot to the touch. Doc told me to not scratch it and take Benadryl orally and use Benadryl cream.

    Probiotics for Nausea?

I understand how you feel ad I type this I have a bottle of ondansetron by my bed. I have not to take any lately because I do take a probiotic pill, but what I have found most helpful is fresh ginger tea, which is also good because it counts for my liquid intake. When I say fresh I found a tea shop that specializes in fresh loose teas and I can buy it to make at home. Sent from my SM-N920V using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. What is most important to me is does the surgeon operate in a real hospital? Over in Mexico the word hospital is used loosely and many of these doctors and people on here say their doctor operated on them at a "hospital" when in reality it's a clinic and most clinics over there do not have an ICU or a blood bank. I'm mean what would they do if they nicked an artery during surgery (read somewhere it happened before) or what if something unexpected happened to you during surgery, would they know what to do at a clinic? I know a lot of people defend their surgeons and where they operate on here saying they were fine and nothing went wrong. Of course nothing bad happened, so how would they know what the outcome would be of their decision if something did go wrong. The only real hospital that I have found that a weight loss surgery doctor operates at is Almater Hospital. The way I found out is I typed the name of all the hospitals mentioned on here in Google and the only one that showed up as an actual hospital was Almater. The others just link to coordinators websites. Another thing that bothers me is a lot of these posts praising these doctors and their staff, they then mention that at night the nurses were loud, rarely came in to check on them, and they are unable to sleep without ear plugs. Also several mention that when the nurse came to put an iv in, it took them a long time to either find a vein or get it in correctly. A lot of people said that the doctor had to help them. This worries me because it makes me wonder if the nurses are even real nurses. Were they trained on how to put an iv in?

    Phentermine and VSG

I took phentermine for my 6 month medically monitored requirement. The first couple months I lost some weight, maybe 15 lbs or so. After that your body gets used to it and I didn't loose much more, maybe a couple lbs a month till the end of my 6 month. But the side effects were awful, made me feel like I was on speed and my heart was always racing. I took it as soon as I woke up and by bed time I was still felt like I was running a mile a minute. I couldn't sleep at all, and I already had issues with sleeping before taking it but it was so much worse. I felt like I was going to stroke out. It caused me to get dangerously high blood pressure. My anxiety was intense. If you can afford optifast I urge you to do that before taking this pills. I simply couldn't afford optifast so my doc recommended the pills. Wasn't a miracle pill. But at the beginning it did stop the hunger feeling.

    Is this normal?

Some people can feel their port but it's not possible to feel your band. It's rather deep in your abdominal cavity around your stomach and there's considerable fat and muscle between it and your skin. Whereas the port is sitting on top of your muscle so it's very possible to feel and even see it through the skin. It is possible to feel tubing under certain circumstances. It's also possible you're feeling scar tissue. Talk to your doctor if you're worried and he can make sure everything is as it should be.

    A question regarding restriction?

Hi everyone, I just had my 2nd fill last Weds. I don't know how much my first fill was but this fill was 4.5. He said I wouldn't need to come back for 3 months and that I would be very restricted now so be careful. Before the fill I could eat anything (rice, popcorn, bread, steak, etc) in small quantities. However, since the fill - WOWWWW is all I can say. I was wondering if I should go back but after reading some of your posts I guess I am just now on the "real" deal of being banded. I was comfortable with my last fill but noticed the weight stopped going off which was why I went ahead with a another fill. I tried eating a few French fries because I was craving salt and even 4 McDonald's small fries hurt! Pasta salad with small hunks of chicken hurt. I am worried that I am too restricted. I want to loose weight, don't get me wrong, but I don't want to drink shakes for the rest of my life to loose the weight. You think this is normal since it is so new? Give it a few weeks to adjust to the smaller hole? I am thinking that is the case but wanted feedback as well. Kitty

    Surgery November 1St!

I didn't have to do a pre-op diet because I didn't have much fat around my liver. I only used Protein drinks for the first two week. I used vanilla.. didn't really care for them. Here some things as a new bandster you might find helpful... especially if you have trouble eating a large meal at night or snacking and a few other pieces of information. I’ve been banded just over 6 years and have talked about this here a couple of time but I think it’s worth repeating for new bandsters. Back when I was banded my doctor suggested something called the “Egg Timer Distraction”. It’s kind of difficult to explain here but I’d be happy to email you the .pdf document. It REALLY helped me with “head hunger. I can’t tell you the number of people in my lapband coffee groups over the years that have said how helpful this “trick” has been in dealing with their head hunger. Also, I’m not really a “diet” book type person but I recommend you pick up two books. Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat: How to Break Your Eat-Repent-Repeat Cycle – by Dr. Michelle May I had the pleasure of hearing Dr. May speak at a conference when she came to Toronto and her book and guidelines really work well with the lapband journey. The second book is: The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite – by David L. Kessler Try and take it one day at a time. Don’t compare yourself to others. Don’t go into this journey saying “I’ll never be able to eat this or that ever again.” I can eat ANYTHING except rice and apple skins and no carbonated beverages. Follow the guidelines given to you by your doctor. Take tiny bites and remember to finish what you have in your mouth before you take your next bite. When I was losing weight I checked in every month with my family doctor to get weighed and measured. (I don’t own scales) I also attended two coffee groups for people that were banded. These things really kept me motivated and on track. I still check in every month with my family doctor to get weighed-in and I host two coffee groups. For me support from fellow bandsters plays a big part in this journey. Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions and also if you would like a copy of the “Egg Timer Distraction Document”. Tom, Toronto Banded July 6 06 Wt. Loss: 156 lbs tomander@bell.net

    Nina's Plastics journey

Just a note to myself really, I think it will be interesting to look back and see what was going through my mind after all this! I spoke to my band clinic today, they rang me to see how my exercise program was going and i told them about the issues that I have with the band, one of the things that sold me on it was that as long as i didnt eat crap my diet would remain the same, I just wouldn't be able to eat as much of it. That I could get my head around, me providing the 30% about choosing healthy foods and the band doing 70% by massivly restricting the amount. That hasnt been the case so far though and all they ever seem to do is tell me to eat dry food, well if I could have totally changed my eating habits I wouldn't have needed the band. Almost all my cooking is one-pot cooking, it is good healthy wholesome food, but now i am being told that I have to have dry chicken breast or plain fish and vegatables, I am sorry, but that it a DIET!!! and me and diets have a baaaad history, I just feel like if I had decided to eat dry chicken and fish without the band I would have lost a shed load of weight, so what did I pay £8,000 for??? :cry On a much lighter note I spoke to my friend who is going with me to have surgery and we got really giddy on the phone, we have talked about the next step in the new us program and agreed to try to book May for our breast lift/augmentations :grouphug: we also agree that we would look at any tweaks that we still needed on the bottom half and maybe have those done at the same time. I am trying to work out how much weight I will lose with 7/8 litres of fat and the skin from the op, it has got to work out at about 14/16lbs, add on the fact that Intend to spend a week too mashed to talk let alone eat,and I am thinking that I should be further down the road to my ideal BMI afterwards!! Only 5/6 days till I fly out for my final consult and pre-op!!!! WOOO HOOOO!!!! :whoo:

    Needing Support

Hi Wondering... I have my initial consultation on 1/13/11 and I understand how you feel. I hope that we will be able to keep in touch throughout our journey. I have only told my immediate family as I too worry about what people will say. My close friend has voiced an opinion several times that it's too extreme and badly affects you for the rest of your life. I agree with bubbles772 and say that she is simply not informed. No one knows unless they have been in our shoes what failure feels like. I told my primary physician today that the only thing holding me back was the guilt that I failed at being able to loose the weight "the right way". His answer says it all -" in this world we will fail without Christ in anything we do................and to not let guilt overcloud this desicion - this is a decision to get healthy." I agree with him, so I scheduled the appointment and go for the seminar on the 13th. Would love to hear how your visit goes!! God bless, Quilter at Heart

    Going back to gym

Diet is key. If your not loosing the weight try upping your calorie intake. 600 to 1000 cal a day and working out you should be okay.
  20. I had my duodenal switch 5 years ago and skin removal 3 years ago. Now weight has gone back up and I'm struggling HARD! I'm looking for friends and motivation to get me back on the right track again. I'm finding myself slipping back into the depression stage of oh well and eating feelings. I hate that my energy has gone down and my motivation is drowning. I know what to do but its hard to get going. I couldn't eat and then one I could eat things again well it was like I had to try everything to see if I would get sick. Now I work in an office and they are always talking about food. what they ate, or are going to eat all day. I find my self snacking instead of eating regular meals. And taking the time to eat healthy is the worst. I'm constantly in a rush and eating the easy foods, then I hate myself for it. I could go on and on... but I won't. Anyone else here or been here?

    Any Lap-banders close to Springfield

I recently moved to Springfield. I have had the band for one year and have lost 85 pounds. My goal is to loose 80-90 more. There have been no health repercussions whatsoever except my blood pressure going down! If you are considering and need someone to talk to, I would be happy to do so.
  22. OH Juli

Big changes due to a little band.

I'm a gym rat. That's probably the biggest "secret". Work out and keep increasing either time or difficulty. Exercise does so much for you. More than just burning calories, but it makes you sweat and become alive in your skin. If you're not there yet, keep going to gym, you'll find what I'm talking about. As for food, right now I'm not the poster child for eating properly with the band to lose weight. I'm rather maintaining my wieght instead of losing more. There is more to lose but I'm kind of on a break from hitting the food part hard. I believe one can eat normally with the band and not gain, but to lose one really needs the diet mentality.
  23. First, how many started with the belly pooch and had a great deal of skin leftover from the weight loss? My doctor thinks I will have some to deal with. Did you get surgery to get rid of it? If yes, was that difficult/expensive? Second, I have D cup breasts and actually kinda like them - how much breast fat did you lose post surgery? I am not letting that worry me or anything, but I have had these my whole adult life and It would be strange to not - you know? Thank you!
  24. Yes, I have some loose skin, but not nearly as much as I thought I would. I am 64 years old and I lost all my weight in 7 months and looked pretty saggy, but it has actually tightened up in the past 5 months. I lived in continual pain before surgery. I cannot remember a minute that I did not have back, knee, hip, and foot pain. I already had one knee replacement and was becoming more immobile from pain in the un-operated knee. It was due to be done very soon. Since losing the first 50 pounds, I have had NO PAIN! NONE! My un-operated knee has actually expanded in the joint space, whereas before it was bone on bone. I walk, hike, swim, and bike with no pain. I also got the doctor's blessing to discontinue my C-PAP, as my extreme sleep apnea is GONE, as is my asthma, GERD, and high blood pressure. My blood sugar, HDL and triglycerides and all normal now. I didn't get any fungal infections in my skin folds last summer! My thighs don't rub together now, so no chaffing when I wear a dress. I can ride my mule, get off the floor by myself, and keep up with my grand kids. I could go on and on and on about how my life has changed since WLS. It is the best thing I have ever done for myself. A little loose skin? Really? Who cares? Not me. I have my life and health back and loose skin is such a small price to pay for all I have gained. People tell me all the time how good I look, and that I look younger, even with loose skin.

    Pain levels

I was miserable the first two days. Then I used spanx to keep the loose stuff inside still so I wouldn’t feel pulling. I’m four weeks out and still sleep with spanx. I avoided the couch because it was too low and couldn’t get up without pain. I also bought a raised toilet seat to be independent. It was $20 on Carewell.com . Do whatever you need to do to get through it, no shame. You will get through! Talk with your bariatric professionals. They know what’s normal.
