  1. My surgery is March 27th and I have been in this process a year and a half (I stopped after a few meetings due to a new job and really wanting to give myself one last chance to lose on my own. I also make impulsive decisions so I know how that is. I will say I think ANY clinic that does surgery 2-3 weeks after you contact them is more than a red flag, it’s a huge red neon billboard. Like others have said this is major surgery with a lifetime of dietary restrictions attached to it. And saying you don’t like to drink so that will be a plus means you need to keep reading. Getting your water in is vital after surgery and that and the protein requirements are the biggest struggles in the beginning (and the gas pains from what I have read...haha). . There is nothing wrong with knowing you want to follow this path but you need to get mentally prepared before the surgery as well as financially prepared if you have to pay out of pocket. Any surgeon who does gastric weight loss surgery after 3 weeks of knowing a patient is reckless and irresponsible at the very least and potentially deadly in the worst. Your doctor should put you through a battery of testing covering multiple areas to ensure you are a suitable candidate. Be smart before you let someone cut out and revise vital organs

I am only 6 weeks post op but yes I have been successful. I was a revision so I didn't have a high starting weight but I am already back in the healthy weight range.
  3. I had to make the same decision between sleeve and bypass. Most studies show that bypass patients loose faster and have great % of excess weight loss at 1 year post-op, but by year three the weight loss is the same for both procedures. The risk of regain is also pretty close for both procedures (although a lot of it is up to you and the choices you make). However, if you do regain weight down the road (which can happen), the options for a revision from a bypass are limited. If you have the sleeve, you can always convert to a bypass or SIPS/modified DS down the road (I think SIPS is going to be the revision of choice in 5 years). I originally was leaning towards the bypass, but my surgeon pushed hard on the sleeve. I took his advise and I don't regret it.

    Miss concernd

That was difficult to read as it was all in 1 long paragraph that just blended together! In future try breaking it up and don’t use caps! You are going for a sleeve with only 20lb to lose but you believe that if you lose this 20lb you will look ugly? So why are you doing it? I had no preop diet for my revision, I was just told to stick to clean eating. Why are you questioning what your surgeon has told you to do? You are trusting him or her with your life but you don’t want to trust them with your diet instructions? Yes you can take whole pills after surgery.

    Overstitch Procedure 3/20

Hi there, are you having a overstitch revision for your RNY? I imagine there is possibly not too many people who have had that type of revision.
  6. That’s great. I’m going to UCLA Tuesday for my revision consult.

    Starting over with the Sleeve

Hello, I am in your same boat x2 I originally had band place in 2005. Then revised in 2014, however it failed me again. Converted to sleeve on 02/18/2019. Hope it goes well for both of us post lap banders.

    Help! Am I CrAzY?!

I revised Band to Sleeve this month. I had my band removed in December 2016 and I really wish I had done the revision surgery a year before I did. I just got my sleeve 3 weeks ago. It's really hard to keep the weight off once the band is removed. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't do it. I gained about 2/3 of the weight I had lost with the band back in 2 years. Good luck! I know feeling like you have to start over again with another surgery is really hard but you've got this.
  9. I've not looked into failure rates or revision posibities yet so I'll hit the studies for that. Thanks
  10. How long have you been overweight? Have you attempted weight loss many times before and failed? If you haven't been overweight for long and haven't really attempted weight loss I would say yes impulsive. Nothing wrong with making up your mind quickly as to want you want, but do make sure your research and then research some more. Make sure you know exactly what you are up against, the risks, the complications, the failure rates, the pain, the stalls, possibly a life time of vitamin supplementation, what options you have for a revision if needed, what WLS is best for you and importantly, the benefits too.

I'm 60. Anyone else over 50 doing RNY?

Hi Pam, I will be 60 years old in March, had a revision from sleeve to bypass on February 17 due to GERD.. don't have much to report in terms of weight loss ...doctors' focus is for me to heal without complications and I am doing well... not much pain, went back to work within a week of surgery. I suggest you focus on being healthy and forget about the age.... just a number

    Help! Am I CrAzY?!

I revised from band to bypass on 17/01/19. I have lost 7kg so far and am now back in the healthy weigh range. You don’t have to have a high BMI when you are revising because of complications. Im really happy with my decision so far
  13. Hello! I am 12 weeks out from revision to bypass! I am at the regret stage, I have been sick since I had the bypass. I go in tomorrow for and EDG to see if i have an Ulcer. I started out 222, now i am at 178.7. Please lift me up in prayer,🙏 that my body heals.
  14. Hi I had a lap band in 2015 and had complications. My dr is advising I have it removed. I am looking at having a revision surgery to MGB in Tijuana with Dr. A. Lopez. My lap-band was done in the states. My worry is am I crazy for weighing in at 190 and considering a another weight loss surgery? I have gained 30lbs in the last 6 months. Is MGB too invasive? I don’t want to loose to much and look unhealthy. Please be open and honest. God Bless is all!
  15. I had my revision mid Jan. Not sure what the worst part about the bypass is. So far I haven’t thrown up whereas with the band I could get stuck a couple of times a week even though I didn’t have a lot of fill and some of the foods were soft and shouldn’t have got stuck. I haven’t really been hungry. Yes sometimes I start feeling as though I need food but this is generally close to when I should be eating anyway. I haven’t had any real cravings. I can walk around a supermarket filled with chocolate and not feel the need to buy and eat it. I am not constipated! Apart from the first week when I was on liquids and the body trying to readjust to food I haven’t had any dumping episodes. This could be because at this point I am trying extra hard to avoid sugar.

what's the worse things about bypass

I am a revision from lapband (2009) to mini-gastric bypass (oct 2018) and I genuinely have absolutely no regrets. Wish I'd done it years ago. I don't feel any different in my body (I can't tell my internal plumbing has been rerouted) except now I'm too wussy to eat icecream or anything with a high sugar or fat content coz I have dumped a few times. However it's certainly not as bad as the sliming, PBing and pain on not chewing properly with the lapband. I really really love my bypass, it means I can eat and lose weight like a regular person rather than a compulsive food addict. Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app

How’d you Choose? Sleeve v.s. Bypass?

My options were the sleeve or bypass, and the surgeon recommended a sleeve first. That was also my first choice, as I'm not really interested in doing a bypass to be quite honest. The sleeve is touted as safer and that it has less complications than the bypass, and nothing is 'off limits' on the sleeve as well, which appealed to me. I am the type of person that if you say 'no', then I immediately want to do the forbidden thing, lol. Mostly it came down to safety for me though, honestly. I admit that I have also heard of more 'horror' stories with the bypass also, so that helped to affect my choice. My surgeon did say that if I wasn't very successful on the sleeve though, in a year's time, she would very likely approve me for a revision to another kind of WLS. She said it wouldn't be bypass though.
  19. Hi guys! Revision patient here. I was banded in 2011, then had my band removed last June and am now scheduled and approved for bypass on Thursday. Im so scared, I keep thinking maybe I should reschedule. Wondering if anyone else has/had these thoughts: -what if i die -can I commit to the lifetime of changes -what if I gain weight back -what if I lose all the weight and still am not happy -what if, what if, what if.... Also, this is silly but I can’t miss weeks of work. Anyone go back fairly soon after?
  20. Thank you for all the information Walter, but I did have the band removed a few years ago.. about 8 months after I had the procedure done. So it wouldn't be a revision or removal..but I'm still wondering if having had the lap band and having it removed due to no weight loss and complications might make a difference still in the requirements. I have a consultation Thursday so I guess I'll find out.

Anyone get a March date yet?

I’m Having my lap and revision to a sleeve on Monday, March 11 also
  22. My GI doc is at Cedars. I’m scheduled to see someone at UCLA next week to discuss revision.
  23. Hi Pippa. I live in Ireland but I had my surgery done with Dr Chris DeBruyne in Belgium and I cannot speak highly enough of him and his team. http://belgiumsurgeryservices.com/ The Jan Portaels hospital was excellent, and the nursing staff all spoke English to me. Very professional. I had a revision from lapband to mini-gastric bypass but he does the sleeve as well. You can talk with him and/or his team as to which would be the best option for you. The website lists all the costs for the surgery packages and there were no other costs except the flights for me from Dublin to Belgium. I took my hubby but you don't have to bring someone if you don't want to (much better if you do because they can help you with your luggage and being there for you). Also book assistance at the airport for the return trip so you can be driven around on a scooter and you won't have to walk / stand for a long time. You might still be a little sore afterwards. The hotel is a very short walk away from the hospital and also the town (there's a Lidl right nearby). Good luck! Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app

    March 2019 sleepers

Hi! I had the lap band and revised to sleeve 05/2017. I lost about 75lbs. I did really really well. But at almost 6 months out I developed severe Reflux. After trying every ppi and otc reflux med out there and not getting a satisfactory response from my surgeon I switched hospitals. My current surgeon believes that is it a possibility that the surgeon who did my sleeve was inexperienced with lap band to RNY and choose to go with what he could handle. I’ve regained about 25lbs because bread and nuts didn’t really agitate my reflux as much and sometimes it was easier to choose not being in pain. If you already have GERD and/or reflux be aware that it can get worse after the sleeve. A lot of ppl who have the sleeve as a virgin surgery do just fine on it and don’t have these complications. I’m just happy that the end is almost in sight! Good luck!
  25. My surgery group does a lot of WLS's each month and our pre op supervised visits were in a group setting of about 10 - 12 patients (we would individually see the Dr each time, but nutrition was in group). It seemed as though we were all there because it was required for our medical insurance authorization. Some of us for 6 monthly visits while others only required 3. Some of these patients were revisions and they were still required to do it. You may get away with not having to go if you pay out of pocket, but I don't see how they would be able to get around insurance requirements, my Dr office was pretty clear on this. I know it's a pain to wait this long, but it really does help you prepare for this life change and if you can put up with all of the pre op requirements you are obviously dedicated to it. best of luck.
