First off I feel GREAT! I have lost 27lbs in 3 weeks....I am transitioning to the "slush and mush" phase and loving it. I now have 4oz yogurt at lunch and I feel FULL! I won't lie and say there haven't been some hard times ( watching my kids eat pizza! ) but this has been so worth it. I fly to Florida on Sunday to look for our new home....I am excited and nervous wondering if the seat belt will fit on this trip....when I went down in February I can tell ya it was an act of god getting that buckled as I refused to ask for an extender. Cross your fingers!! I will let you know how I did. :0)

Hi cher (and hi again faybie!) - I am not much of a meat eater either, so he're is how I get my Protein. Egg whites contain the protein, not so much the yolks. The egg yolks are filled with fat, and if I'm not mistaken, the whites are fat free. Eat the whites. You can also use Egg Beaters, which don't have fat and have lots of protein. That's actually what I do because I don't like the goopy egg white innards. While I don't eat beef, pork, lamb, etc., I don't mind salmon, turkey and chicken, so that is what I eat to get my protein. I buy the Amish (no steroids, hormones, injected) boneless, skinless chicken breast and usually grill it on my George Foreman grill. I buy the canned Swanson chicken. I also use the pre-packaged Chicken of the Sea Salmon (boneless, skinless). I think 3oz of each has about 15g protein. I'm still on the soft food stage, so I'm making what I call "Whips." I take the chicken or salmon and mix it with cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, yogurt (all FF of course) and add various seasonings. I can change the entire texture of the meal by adding cream cheese (especially good with the salmon). I've used Greek seasoning, Italian seasoning, hot sauce, bbq sauce, lemon pepper to flavor the whip. Each one of the whips has about 25g protein. I'm also drinking Isopure zero carb drinks. They are fruit flavored, not the milky protein shakes. 40g protein each and only 160 calories. You can also go to your surgeon's office and have them order Bariatrix products for you. You can't order them yourself, but a MD can order them. Each one has 70 - 100c and 15g protein. My surgeon had me on those for my pre-op and post-op diet, and I still use them as necessary. (I'm on self-imposed liquids this weekend, matter of fact. 5 drinks = 75g protein.) GNC is having a sale of Muscle Milk - 34g protein per drink. I only drink them on days I work out because it's got 360 calories. I also got some other high Protein Drinks, but I haven't tried them so I don't know how they will taste. Oh, I also bought some Stallone Protein pudding, too. We'll see how that goes. I don't care for pudding, so I don't know why I bought it. Oh yeah, 20g protein! There are also some IGN (?) protein bullets. The new ones are 3oz and have 42g protein. ReneBean mentioned them earlier, and if you're interested I can dig up a link for you. I've not tried those either, but plan to. Those are all of my secrets. Hope they helped! Sorry it took so long to reply, I just saw this thread. Good Luck! Nathalie

Every day is different for me. I think everything I eat has at one time or another gotten stuck. Lunch seems to be the best time for me, mornings I'm tight, oatmeal after 9 am is usually ok, sometimes some yogurt. Lunch is fairly open with some restrictions, no bread. Cant tolorate it at all. Dinner is touch and go. Sometimes I eat whatever the family is eating, and sometimes it just ain't gonna happen and I bring out the soup. Good thing i love soup!

Soft foods include yogurt, cottage cheese, tuna with light mayo, creamed soups, mashable vegetables, canned chicken, canned salmon, etc. Basically, soft foods are soft going down. Did your surgeon's office or dietitian or nutritionist give you a pamphlet or handout that listed the allowable soft foods for their bariatric program?

I'm scheduled for 9/9... On pre op for 3 days now. No cheating but I'm hungry! Very hungry. Allowed 3-4 shakes per day and 1/3 cup of cottage cheese or yogurt. So far, so good but I feel like I'm starving but I know I'm not. Didn't realize how much I REALLY ate before I started this. No wonder I'm fat!

I to was really hungry. I totally know how you feel. I found that sf pudding cups helped me alot. My doctor on his liquid list was coffe, tea, diluted fruit juice, broth, blenderized soup, skim milk, jello, popsicles, yogurt, sugar free pudding, cottage cheese, applesauce, oatmeal, grits, cream or wheat, oatmeal (runny), v8 low sodium, protein drinks, carnation instant breakfast. I only made it through the liquid phase with sf pudding was my friend.. That was my lifesaver. I was hungry alot. I went to my daughters soccer party just 3 days after surgery. 11/5/03. It was at a mexican resturant( my favorite food) that was hard. i wound up eating one chip. I ate one or two bites of chile con queso w/hot sauce and order tortilla soup and drank the broth. None of that is on that list above for me....lol..... everyone's food looked so good. I survived. I made it on liquids 10 days after that I called doctors office and asked if I could go to soft foods. they gave me the green light. I had to reply to you because another thing I did about 6 days post op I was really really hungry and that liquid wasn't gettin it so on my way home from work I stopped at lubys and got some mashed potates. I took about 5 little bites and got nauseted. they were to thick for me had they been put in a blender it proably would of gone down fine.. but I didn't PB or nothing like that just sick feeling. i think your okay. I did kinda what you did. Carnation instant breakfast was a filler for me for breakfast. I would put a scoopful of protein powder in with it. The list above I don't want to tell you anything wrong some doctors say liquids and that means liquids my doc gave me this list. I just wanted to share. Hoping that it would help. Just remember it only gets better from here on out or at least thats how I feel now that I am on my soft diet I am not hungry like I was on liquids. . best of luck, deb banded 11/5/03)

Very discouraged after sleeve
Sosewsue61 replied to LeaMay's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You might also keep using protein shakes to get your protein requirements, and high protein yogurts. If you don't keep up the protein levels, you will lose muscle, and more hair. Also our bodies use starches first before it burns our body fat, but it is not the same process as when you eat dense protein, your body uses the stored fat for fuel, you become fat adapted instead of running on glucose. And that is what corrects insulin resistance, we correct our metabolisms and hormones. -
Hi everyone! I would really appreciate some help. I am 6 weeks past my sleeve surgery. I'm am very discouraged and disappointed. I lost about 20 lbs in the beginning, only because of the pre op diet where I barely ate anything and the 2 weeks after the surgery but it has been downhill from there. I know the sleeve is "not a magic solution, its a tool" and so on! I've heard it all too many times. But I would assume that if I eat like ten percent of what I used to eat I would lose weight, but I haven't. I do eat starches and foods that I may not supposed to, but much less than before. I am really struggling with dieting. If I didn't struggle with dieting, I wouldn't get to the point that I need surgery! I find it hard to believe that all people who are over weight to the point that they need surgery, all of a sudden magically changed their mindset after surgery and started to be able to eat the right foods. I don't know how to do it. I may not eat the "right" foods, but I don't eat terrible foods. I don't eat more than I can tolerate, I don't eat ice cream or milkshakes or things like that. I do eat my sweet cereal, my avocado, my rice, grits etc. I find it nearly impossible to eat all this protein. I hate all fishes. I'm Jewish and Kosher so cant eat seafood. I don't like chicken salad. Very limited in the proteins that I can eat. How much cottage cheese and yogurt can a person eat a day? I am so frustrated and don't know what to do, I am very curious to know if all these people who lose so much weight after surgery is because they actually followed the guidelines, and if so, how all of a sudden they were able to change after all these years of not succeeding to eat the right foods. What discourages me the most, is that it seems that it is all about will power, with or without surgery. If dieting and controlling what eat is the only way to lose weight with or without it, what is the surgery good for? I am so discouraged. Please help! Thanks so much for your time!

Try not to compare yourself to any one elses loss. I get on here and see people losing 40 lbs. in 2 months and yes it gets depressing when im barely losing. I have beeb sleeved for 6 weeks now. On sleeved date was 226, about 8 or 9 days later was down about 13 lbs. and there I stayed for almost 3 weeks. Lost about 2-3 lbs, and then stayed the same for the next 2 weeks, now just in the last few days have lost another 2 lbs. So it shows I'm down about 20 lbs in 6 weeks. I am following my surgeons plan though, I know I could get in more water but that has always been a struggle for me. It could also depend on your surgeon's plan. From day 2 we are allowed cottage cheese, pudding, yogurts, anything soft. Many people are on 2 weeks or more of liquid diet. Just keep following the plan they gave you and success will be yours! Well that's a positive thing in my opinion ... now if I can look at Golden Spoon Frozen Yogurt and feel that way ... I'll be happy too ... and keep my taste for dark chocolate.

Even pre-banding I am just not that hungry in the morning. I do try and eat breakfast, though. My absolute favorite thing is Greek Yogurt - vanilla or honey. Very high in protein - the right consistancy for me (a little tigher in the am) and I love the taste! It's like a dessert for me:)

Not losing a great deal of weight on the pre-op diet
Bufflehead replied to C2CFOREVER's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Why cheese? If you are going to eat dairy, IMO yogurt is a healthier choice. And why fruit instead of green veggies? Green veggies are much lower carb. All that said, losing 1 kg in a week is great IMO. Does your bariatric team have a specific goal that you must meet? It sounds like it, from your post, but personally I think expecting more than 1 kg/week is a high and kind of cruel standard. -
I don't see why it would be a problem. Just watch the carb count. I regularly put Kefir (liquid yogurt) in my Protein shakes to help with the taste. Plus it adds more protein and keeps me regular.

Thanks for this tip! I was just having Plain Greek Yogurt as I was reading this and had Crystal light tried Raspberry in it and it is awesome! G

Overwhelmed at the thought of the new way of life I will have to adapt
NavyMom2006 replied to MauiGirl5555's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I'm here to throw my 2 cents in, since I'm pretty new to the process - 2 weeks post surgery. I was in the hospital overnight, and while a bit nauseous, was able to get down Water and a bit of diluted apple juice. The first couple of days home I was so tired I slept most of the day and night. I started on the Protein drink (Pure Protein) and although it took a couple of hours to drink one, I managed to get in two per day. Now I can finish one in about an hour. Progress!!! I did have some cream of chicken Soup the other night, which was delish. I had just a bit of yogurt the other day, and some cottage cheese yesterday. You really think you're going to be able to eat a small container full, but believe me, you can't! I have tried to eat more than a couple of spoonfuls and you feel it right in your throat. If you don't stop, then you're going to be throwing up and that hurts worse! The "good" thing about all that is that you're really not hungry, so the two or three spoonfuls is actually good. You get the taste of whatever it is you're eating, and it really is enough to satisfy. Shoot, it even takes me 10-15 minutes to eat sugar free Jello cup! I'm so content with the two Protein shakes and tons of water a day, that I'm not really even motivated to "eat" other foods, but know that I need to at some point. That to me is the scariest part of this at this point. -
Finally! My surgeon talked with the dietician!
divaliciousdee posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My surgeon talked with my dietician and she totally revised my eating plan. He said that the diet is per Doctors orders and the nutritionist's job is to make sure calories and nutrients aren't being sacrificed. Well with that said I told him about not being able to have yogurt or cream soup stuff or sf pudding etc. He had her change the diet. I can have thin deli slices, yogurt, sf pudding lowfat cheese slices, eggs(soft scrambled or poached). My surgeon said that the liquid phase was okay for a week and full liquids does include cream soups thinned etc. Kathy I can have egg drop soup with the egg but to got slowly! I feel so much better now. he also said I ws doing very good and the weight loss is great but not typical so don't get discouraged if it slows down after the next 4 weeks. He said that all the surgeons who perform this procedure have different diet plans. Unfortunately my dietician had RNY in mind for me and that is the diet plan I was on. I guess she got confused since the majority of the patients are RNY. I had a slice of lowfat cheese..yum and 3oz of fat free turkey and ham... and I was full WHoo Hoo! I am on my way. -
Quick answer myth. I can eat about a half a cup of food, but that depends on what food I am eating. One can eat a lot more soup and yogurt than say meat.

Yogurt is not part of a clear liquid diet. But, check with your surgeon's office, sherbert might be. Best wishes, it is worth a try. I lived on the sugar free popcicles the 1st couple weeks after surgery! kll724

Jenn.. I feel great today. Another steri-stip came off today so I have 2 incisions uncovered and 3 covered yet. Will be glad when the itchies are done. I'm able to sleep on my side and my tummy. I'm sitting here with my second yogurt of the day. I haven't lost anything in the last couple of days, but I've done the diet by the book, so hopefully some more will come off soon. I never got swollen and I am noticing my clothes fitting looser now. It's not uncomfortable to wear all my undies again. The first week I camped out in my nightgown and nothing else. Now I can dress for the day and yesterday was my first day back to my routine. I did an hour of volunteer work at the hospital, had a 2 hour flute rehearsal, did some work at the church for an hour or two, came home and did some work on the computer and then went to choir rehearsal from 6-7. Went out for dinner afterwards... I had broth. And then home to watch tv. I got to bed about 11:30 and slept like a log until this morning at 8. I feel 100% normal and am just waiting to get out of the clear liquid phase and into the "all" liquids.(5 more days!!) In a nutshell I can say that this experience has been all good so far and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Judy

The Inevitable "I'm Not Losing Fast Enough" Thread
goodlife replied to ouroborous's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's why when the scale didn't move for two days in a row last week I picked it up and refuse to get on it! Ouro..that smoothie you're making sure does seem to have a bunch of calories in it! I'm using the Gladiator powder...180 calories for 2 scoops, 45g of Protein, I use about 1/4 cup of Water in it, about a cup of ice cubes, and one medium banana thrown in. 2 of those a day and I'm at 90 g of protein! My biggest thing is that it seems like I can really take in a lot. I was able to eat a whole container of Dannon greek yogurt with strawberry in it today. I can eat about a whole cup of thin creamed soup at a sitting...maybe 15 minutes or so. I know these are "slider" foods and pass through my sleeve pretty quickly but it's still worrisome. -
First days of eating soft foods question
SAD HATTER posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, so. My surgeon's instructions are to eat small bites, and wait a while between bites. I am doing that. But how much did you guys eat in those first weeks after surgery. I have seen some do 1/4 cup, and I was afraid to go beyond like 1 TBSP or 2 TBSP, so I am not really sure if I am eating enough? If that makes sense. I have tried yogurt, refried Beans, and egg salad. I eat very little of it and notice no difference physically. Now, the Protein shakes... How long does it take you to finish an 8 oz one? I have yet to finish one. Wondering if theres something else I can do to get one down. I am afraid to drink too much too fast. I guess I have anxiety over messing up and doing it wrong. My followup is Tuesday with the surgeon. -
Counts as a liquid to me. Otherwise I wouldn't be getting them in. I asked that question before discharge so not a silly question. ???? I'm still in first week post op. Not allowed yogurt until next week. Good luck!
-
You're welcome. And I also forgot the other great first week mushie food, Greek Yogurt! Its smooth, easy to swallow, and has a high protien count.

Yoplait Greek 100 calorie yogurt with less than 15 grams sugar is a good one. I like lime and cherry best...but the cherries are not to be eaten...I spit them out, or pick them out. I was told that you can have any Protein, really, as long as it is moist, and chewed down to nothing. I started with an egg cooked in a little butter--that's how I like it. Then, tuna fish with olive oil may. Tuna goes into my sleeve with no problems, and tastes good...but I still don't feel like eating. I have had chicken breast, and Healthy Ones smoked turkey breast, and a little bit of ham, too. Tonight, I'm going to try taco meat. As long as you chew it down to bits...as if it came from a blender, you'll be fine. Some people can have cream of wheat, I read, but I am not allowed that because it's a starch....I wouldn't recommend it, either, because it swells and can hurt your stomach. You need the protein.
