Surgery in Mexico?
WorldTraveler replied to ho11ieberry06's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Research, research, research! Read everything you can find on the doctor you are considering and his patients. Also, youtube has loads of videos from patients who were sleeved in Mexico-you can PM them for more of their story as well. I'm very happy with the doctor I have chosen for my surgery (4 weeks away-so excited). You will find nearly everyone on the forum here is happy with the doctor they chose, so find what works best for you. You can also Google the clinics/hospitals these surgeons work out of and see films of the facilities on youtube (if that helps you decide). Definitely consider your health-if you have any extra risks-how does the doctor respond to those? I have 2 clotting disorders so would not choose anyone operating out of a clinic. I need a full hospital and a surgeon who knows how to handle my situation. Good luck with your search. Stay on the forum-it's full of great info and support -
I go for my wls seminar in about a week. Looking for ideas as to what questions I should ask and any ideas. Thank you!

Toddler mom considering sleeve surgery
*Lexie* replied to Mega_100's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If you can get help for a few days while you recover, you should be fine. Your energy will be a little low for a few weeks but then you feel normal, dare I say you'll have even more energy. The diet is no different than any other diet when it comes to time, it takes a little effort with food planning and preparation. Exercise is encouraged but not everyone does that right away. I'm sure you could find a fun workout video and get your little one dancing around the living room while you're working out. One thing I have read over and over is people saying that their only regret is they wished they'd gotten the surgery sooner. If you want it, don't wait. -
I'm 4 weeks out and i'm only doing the treadmill at home, can not lift weights yet, only walking,so listen to your Dr and have some patience

Got banded July the 18 2014
Tracic replied to LADYBUG50's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was on July 15th - so pretty close. It is slow and steady for me. I started at 263 and am at 229 as of this Saturday. Still not in the green zone so I still struggle with controlling my intake. However, I think I am consistently losing because I stay between 900-1200 cal a day and do zumba 2-3x a week. I am finally starting to see it in my clothes. Hopefully my next fill will get me out of bandster hell!! I think I am close because i do feel full when I remember to eat slow and focus on protein. Good Luck and let us know how your doing! PS. I must confess I had cheese pizza today.... extra zumba this week I guess... -
Yay! Way to hang in there. I'm only 17 days out and I know my stall(s) is somewhere in my future. I am trying mentally prepare myself.

I was just curious to see how long did it take for you to start loosing weight consistently after post op? I know some people don't lose any the first 6 weeks, during the healing time. So when did the weight start coming off consistantly, was it after you first fill? Second fill? Thanks!!

This is one question I can answer! I got banded on May 13, 2010. I was terrified!!! When I first got there, they type and crossed matched me (in case I would need a blood transfusion which I didnt). They also made me give a urine specimen. They started an IV and hung Lactated Ringers. I then got a shot of Heparin which didnt hurt AT ALL ( I was scared tho). I talked to the surgeon and the anesthesiologist. A nurse then came in and said she'd be with me all the way, gave me something through my IV. She said after this medicine, I probably wouldn't remember anything...she was right! I woke up in my room. I have five small incisions that have steri strips on them (butterfly sutures). They had me on IV fluids and a Morphine pump for pain. I must add I woke up with a Foley Catheter, but they didn't put that in till I was asleep. I had some abdominal pain from the gas, but walking really helped. I stayed one night in the hospital and came home. I have been on clear liquids for one week. I have not felt hungry or anything...a little weak which is probably expected. Tomorrow I go to a full liquid diet. According to my scale, I have lost ten pounds. You are going to do fine! I wish you lots of luck! I have only been on this site for one day and I have found that it is really helpful!

6mo diet offically started
Julia_N replied to lageil's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good luck to you, Laurie. I, too, had to do a 6-month preop diet. I started mine in September 08, and had all the holidays, plus an anniversary and three birthdays (wait, are we the same person? :mad2:). I didn't have a set amount I had to lose. Mine was sort of strict in that I had 2 protein shakes and one small meal a day. Maybe yours isn't as severe. Everything was going pretty good until the holidays. I stopped losing, but didn't gain. Then I got pneumonia and lost a couple of months of dieting. Got back on track, so it ended up the end of July 09 for me to get surgery. I hope yours goes much more smoothly! I did lose almost 45 pounds preop, so that was a nice start. Best of luck to you in your journey! -
Is it too late to start again or did I totally screw up?
Lovin2lose posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 17 months post gastric sleeve. In the first 7 months I lost 100 lbs. Then for the next 5 months I bounced up & down the same 6 lbs. Unfortunately, I still have over 100 lbs to go. It gets even worse from there. I've noticed over the last couple of months I have fallen back into my old eating habits of nothing but JUNK. And I mean pure junk. Cookies & candy have been my main stay along with pure sugar laden ice coffee from DD ( I shouldn't even call it ice coffee since they barely have room to even put coffee in it with the amount of CREAM and SUGAR and CARAMEL). These ice coffees are a new thing since surgery. I always hated anything to do with coffee but since a few months after surgery, I craved them and started getting them once in a while. It has now become almost a daily thing (atleast 5 times a week, if not more). Also I have almost completely stopped taking vitamins. For some reason, I just can't remember to take them. I think it has to do with how many times a day I have to take them, I don't know. I mean, there's the thyroid meds that you have to take an hour before you eat anything, then the multi and B12 and Vit D after I eat. Then you have to wait at least 4-5 hrs to take the calcium then you have to take another calcium later on in the day. I think my mind gets so overwhelmed, that I say screw it and I forget to take them. How do I dig myself out of this deep hole that I put myself in to? Is it to late to reset this whole surgery thing and get back on the losing train? And getting in any kind of exercise is a joke. I do absolutely nothing. WHY DO I DO THIS TO MYSELF? HELP!!! -
Questions...liquids to mushies....help!
Julie88 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today was my first day postop for mushies. I reluctantly decided on a small piece of fish and mashed potatoes. I wasn't even sure I wanted to eat. Now....ouch! I feel like I ate a plate full of rocks. Is this normal? What is a typical mushie meal? Is it the same portion amounts once the band is filled? I have felt great...lost about 15 pounds during the first 2 weeks. The liquids were surprisingly easy. Did I eat too fast? Were my bites too big? Does that matter at this point? Is there restriction even now...because it sure seems that way. Rocks...that's all I can feel. Thanks in advance for any thoughts/advice! julie -
Can I really do this?
U_go_gurl68 replied to GonBhealthy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all, I, too, had all the same fears prior to surgery starting about a week or two before and up until they came to wheel me back to the OR. I had my band on June 30th and I don't regret it one minute. I even started crying before I went back because of all the fears I had built up during those two weeks pre-op. When I woke up, I didn't remember a thing. I didn't experience any real pain until the second day, but not until the evening. It was mostly due to gas pain and only lasted a few days. The only discomfort I get is an occassional tugging feeling if I try to sit up too fast due to use of those abdominal muscles or if the seat belt in the car rubs against my incisions. For that, I have been using a small pillow to place under the belt for padding. All the things you are feeling are normal, but they will pass. Good luck to all of you. Sincerely, Stephanie -
Can I really do this?
U_go_gurl68 replied to GonBhealthy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Jackie H, I think it all depends on the patient. Some surgeons want you to do the liquid diet to shrink your liver to decrease the risk of injury during surgery. Your stomach sits below your liver and if it is enlarged it increases the risk for injury to surrounding tissues and makes placement of the band harder. If on the day of your surgery, after your surgeon gets in, your liver is enlarged, most will reschedule and not perform the surgery. This is what I have heard anyway. I didn't do a full two week liquid diet either because my surgery kept getting rescheduled due to scheduling conflicts so I only did it two days before and all went fine. -
Hi exoticheart. Thanks for your reply. I haven't been told by anyone NOT to worry about blood clots, lol. That's why I asked how long after a surgery can one take that off their list of things to worry about. I'm glad you posted the info. I'm sure that it's not going to help much since surgery is in a week and 3 days, but after what you said, tomorrow I will not be smoking any more. I have a 7 year old that will be waiting for me to come home to him and take care of him so I'll do whatever I can to cut my risks down. Tiffykins, thanks for the info. I forgot about the ROSE procedure for RNY patients, great idea to post there!! Hope to hear from some more of you all!! God Bless! Krystal

Tony - I was banded two weeks ago, and found SO much comfort, information and help on this site; just before surgery, and since. I contemplated WLS for close to a year before actually moving forward. The two I looked closely at was the gastric bypass and the lap band. I teeter tottered back & forth between the two for a long time. I was scheduled for the bypass, then freaked out about 10 days prior. In between that and my decision to go with the band (plus plication), I gave dieting one more good try. That was about a two week period, and I managed to gain three more pounds. Congrats on your decision! I'm on my path, and soon you will be, too. It's a lot of work, but even this early on, I'm finding my new "tool" is quickly becoming my new best friend

Concerns about getting the Sleeve
RareGold3000 replied to luckystarr23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello and welcome......I second guessed it as well during the 4 months of required appts and such, but I realized that I didn't want to keep gaining weight and I wanted to get back to being healthy again. I think we are all afraid of failure since we've failed at so many diets throughout our life. This surgery is the first step to better health and weight loss for sure, but we have to continue to take care of ourselves forever with what we eat and get exercise in, it's a life style change. Each surgeon and nutritionist have different plans. I take a Multivitamin and Calcium citrate supplements and B12, but my surgeon says since it's the sleeve I won't be taking these forever it's just due to the 'less' amt of calories I am getting during weight loss. And actually it can't hurt anyway to take a multivitamin and calcium with the maintenance phase forever. I didn't need Iron supplements. Since sleeve patients have normal absorption it's not necessary to forever be on supplements as with your Roux-en-Y patients. But, again check with your surgeon and nutritionist. I'm only giving you the advice that my surgeon's office tells me. Of course at the beginning after surgery I only consumed maybe 200-400 calories a day, but that eventually gets more and more. I'm now at 9 months post op and consume anywhere from 800-1000 calories on any given day. My surgeon says that at a year out I should be right around 1200 calories a day. I go to the gym 5 days a week with 50 min of cardio each day and then add 3 days of strength training as well, gym days I eat more but then again I'm making up for the deficit of what I'm burning, but still those days total minus the calories burned is only around 800-1000. I hope this helps some? Best of luck with your decision and with your journey, I'm sure you'll make the best decision for you. Karen -

Muscle pain/nausea after activities post op
mdhender87 replied to Emily Jane's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have had the same issues and I am 3 weeks out at this point. Both get better. If I was too active as far as doing things around the house or doing things that required bending I would get really bad muscle pain, if that happens I just try to relax the muscle for a day and then it’s usually better. As far as with the nausea and dizziness in the shower, I kind of assumed it was low blood sugar due to my body adjusting to this new way of life. I would just try to sit for a few minutes and took zofran and drank a bit of apple juice and it seemed to do the trick every time. Both of these problems are becoming much less common the longer out I am though -
Post-op weight loss expectations
Midnightsun replied to lvidacovich's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You are doing great! You will most likely hit your stall soon.. Anyways I did for a bit. Doc said it was normal as your body adjusts. If you stick to the program it’s less than 10lbs a month so I would say super doable for you! Hope you surpass your goal and have a wonderful Anniversary Celebration! -
Post-op weight loss expectations
RickM replied to lvidacovich's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Your initial couple weeks or so of loss includes a lot of water weight, as you body gets used to the large caloric deficit and struggles to get used to operating on so little (that initial loss is primarily glycogen - stored carbohydrate - which comes off quickly and includes a lot of water that keeps it in solution. Once that has burned off and the body gets the idea that you are serious about this caloric deficit thing, it finally decides that it needs to get serious and start drawing on your fat stores, which comes off more slowly. So, yes, it is normal to lose a lot the first couple of weeks, and also to stall a bit and not lose anything for a week or so, and then start losing again, but more slowly. Long to intermediate term, figure on 1-2 lb per week (5-10 lb per month) as a good sustainable loss rate, with some weeks or months being above or below trend. For instance, my loss, starting from a bit under 300 lb, was 32 lb the first month, followed by 15, 15, 10, 10, 10, by which time I was within about 10 lb of goal weight and started ramping up my calories to slow things down. Also, figure on your loss rate declining over time - it simply takes fewer calories to move your body around 24/7 when you weigh 250 vs. 350. This trips up some people, particularly if they increase their intake after a few months - increasing intake meets declining calorie burn and you reach stability, whether you are at goal or not.. So try to maintain a fairly low intake at least until you are within sight of your goal weight. Good luck!
