Lap Band Surgery tomorrow... feeling GUILTY
indigostorm replied to crash878905's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Crash, Wow, 2 weeks liquid diet pre-op. Whats up with that? I could eat right up to the night before surgery. I think it sounds like you are doing amazingly well. You should be very proud of yourself. I love BBQ also. LOVE THEM! There is no way I could go to a BBQ and not eat. I think you are being WAY too hard on yourself. Remember, the band is a tool to help you control your appetite and learn to eat more consciously. Honestly, I really had no idea how fast I ate or how poorly I chewed my food until I had the band. (That cured me in a hurry). I hope you have an exercise program already started, but if you haven't please start walking as much as possible right after surgery. Yes, it will hurt, but it will hurt less and you will recover faster the more you walk. Please do not let your Aunt make you feel bad about yourself or your journey. She may actually think she is being helpful. When you need support, turn to your online community. We are people like you who will understand your problems, temptations, successes and failures. Yes, there will be failures, there will be times you think you let yourself down. THAT IS PART OF THE JOURNEY AND LEARNING PROCESS TOO!!! Embrace it! Love yourself right through your flaws. You are very brave to be taking this challenge. This is an entire lifestyle change. You don't have to be perfect. If any of us were perfect we wouldn't need any lap band or any support. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR JOURNEY!!! Indigostorm -
Need Suggestions Have Not Lost Any Weight
thinoneday replied to barb1952's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Good girl! You'll be doing yourself the biggest favor by not weighing all the time. . .your going to do so well. . .trust me, just stay off the scale for about 2 weeks no matter how hard it is (get someone to hide the scale) then weigh and rejoice with the victory! Good luck and let us know ok! -
In the U.S., depending on the insurance company requirements, it can be months before surgery is approved. I was lucky in that my insurance is bariatric friendly. In less than 1 month, I had my 1st appointment, was sleeved and released from the hospital. But I went to great lengths to get all my pre-op testing done quickly. In 2 weeks, I'd had all the blood work, xrays, EDG, and psych eval completed. On top of that, I had a co-morbidity (sleep apnea) and I had done a doctor supervised diet years earlier that met my insurance pre-qualifications.

well, i would say your body is adjusting to everything: the surgery, fast weight loss in the beginning, new diet. how much did you lose pre-op? stalling is normal. be patient and keep doing what you're doing. the weight will come off. you may see inches lost first good luck!

I finally started losing again. I lost 20 pounds pre-op and now 17 pounds since surgery. I went Tuesday 5/29 and had only lost 1 pound since my 2 week post op appt. Good news is that same day I also had my diet progression class!! I'm so excited to CHEW something. Thank you for your support.

I am a Therapeutic Apheresis Nurse and that is one of the more common diseases we treat. I've been doing this job for 15 years and have had WLS only 10 weeks, but I have never heard of GB after WLS. If you don't mind me asking, did they treat with plasma exchanges or IVIG?

That's considered a stall. Plateau's are generally when you are close to your lower limits and you get stuck there pretty much forever, so let's hope this isn't a plateau. Are you tracking body fat % as well? Are you working out? Bodybuilding/weight lifting? What's your daily intake vs burn look like? Are you tracking intake? Hows your water? Something VERY important to factor is your BMR. Basal Metabolic Rate, the amount of calories you burn in a day just by being alive, think in a coma, alive but not moving, that's your BMR. BMR drops as you get older and it drops as you lose weight. https://www.active.com/fitness/calculators/bmr If I assume you are 6 foot, starting weight of 408, starting age of say 35 would put your BMR at 3285 calories per day. Dropping that 408 to 330, with the same height and age, drops that BMR to 2799 calories per day. That's just shy of 500 calories less burn per day now. So, you can see, as we get older and thinner, it keeps getting harder to maintain the same speed of weight loss. We need to either increase our exercise or decrease our caloric intake, or both. Hope that helps some.

Almost surgery time
1959JimmyJames replied to amandaseiders's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 9 weeks post-op. Just had my 2 month follow-up exam today. My blood pressure is normal and I am down 38 lbs. I am on a normal diet now and that is anything that I want to eat. I follow the nutrition plan but I don't substitute anything for flavor. I use real butter and I drink whole milk. I do use sugar substitute for ice tea and kool-aid. I haven't exercised at all yet. I have a back problem that I am recovering from. I just walk around the house and help out with the kids. I guess that is a workout, chasing after 4 little kids. On surgery day I was nervous and anxious. I am a band to sleeve revision. The surgery took about 4 hours. I felt miserable when I woke up in recovery. It was the anesthesia. After it wore off I started feeling the pain from surgery. I was hooked up to a morphine pump and I had the control in my hand so I used it alot. Whenever I saw it lit up, I would drug myself. You will be up and walking by dinner time on surgery day. They won't let you lay there. There is a danger of blood clots. I didn't have a urine catheter when I woke up. It was removed right after surgery. It was my option, so the doctor went along with it. Walking around after surgery helped me with going to the bathroom also. I was in the hospital 2 days. You have to pass a swallow test before they release you. Just making sure there are no leaks. You'll have liquid pain killer at home. Keep it handy and after about the 5th day you will be feeling pretty good. Some people feel great right away. My pain lingered for a while. My wife took care of me through this whole thing. She is a great woman. I think the main thing is to have someone around to help you the first week. And if that person loves you then that is all the better because you are going to be an inconvienence for a few days. Good luck to you and let us know how you do. -
Congratulations on being banded and welcome to our little forum. I think you'll find by reading posts here that many of still have trouble with evening snacking. Since you have no fill yet it is perfectly normal to feel hungry. With no fill, everything should be passing right through your band. If nothing hurts when you eat, you should be fine. The same advice goes for the treadmill - if it doesn't hurt, you should be OK. Take it easy at first. You're only one week out of surgery. Many of us have that bubbling gurgling sensation. We have lots of different theories on what causes it. For some people it is quite loud. You may be taking too big a bite or not chewing well enough. It's hard to say. Good Luck and please check in often.

August 2011 Sleevers!
dramagirl28 replied to meggspeggs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm down 53lbs and have started only weighing once a week. I lose on average about 2lbs/week and that is just perfect for me! I'm down from a size 20 to a 14, which is what I wore in high school. I'm tickled pink at the thought of dropping even more. I am disappointed in my exercising efforts, but now I'm planning a trip to Yosemite so I'm using that to motivate me to strengthen my muscles and build stamina so that I can go and enjoy the new me! I am so thankful I made the leap and got this done. I will never regret or be ashamed of having surgery. -
Your hospital discharge documents should spell out the level of activity you are supposed to stick to until your follow-up appointment. As with everything else, doctors differ. But mine (and many) encourages walking for exercise immediately postop---but vetoes other exercise until the follow-up. After 4 weeks, I was cleared for all physical activity with no restrictions.

I, too, am a Zumba enthusiast, toffee, so I know just how you feel!! I think Betsy is quite right...Zumba is fairly high impact, and although you can do some modifications of the moves, I would say that you'd be better off holding off on it until about 4 weeks postop. I started back to the gym at 2 weeks post, but didn't resume taking aerobic-based classes or lift weights until I was 4 weeks post. On the bright side, I just signed up to take the certification to actually TEACH Zumba  Can't wait to share my mania far and wide! All the best to you on your journey! Christine

my surgeon has me on liquids for 4 weeks (post op diet)..he said its very important NOT to eat solids as this is the healing process & not to over work the stomach muscles as they need to heal properly

I've had no zumba for three, going on four weeks and I usually have 2-3 classes a week. I'm going crazy! I don't feel like texting my surgeon about such a non-urgent question in the middle of the night, I was wondering if there are any others who love zumba out there who could tell me how long post-op they avoided or were recommended to stay away from zumba for. :smile2: Aaaah, so need my zumba fix, but I'm not sure I could last a whole class right now.

6 months post should be fine! And do, it's fantastic! The best hours of my week. Only a few weeks more to go.. counting down...

I asked my Dr. to write a RX for Aqua P.T. for core strengthening. I'm completing my 7th week and my back pain relief is remarkable. My Dr. thought that I just forgot how to use my stomach muscles and had to rebuild my core muscles so they could support my back more. Whatever the reasoning, my back pain has gone from a #8 to a #3. I'll take that any day of the week. I actually joined the pool so I can continue exercising in the Water until I feel that my back/core is strong enough to exercise in the gym itself. It's worth a try. Hopefully, it will work for you, too.

8 Weeks out and having a hard time eating
Purseynursey replied to charro535's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm in your boat too at 3 weeks. My pouch is very abnormal shaped because of my previous lap band and scar tissue. It's hour glass shaped and I'm having a terrible time. Let me know what your Dr says -
I was on Nexium before my surgery 12/19. My reflux gradually has come back. Last week I call my surgeon and his nurse said take Tums. Since then I am eating up to ten a day. I called the on call surgeon today and He says go ahead and start back with my Nexium. Him not being my doc I was just a bit concerned that capsules would be ok as I'm just on full liquids still. I do start purée Wednesday.

I'm so tired
KCItalianGirl replied to Teresa'sTurn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Also hyrdocodine made me really tired...the pain medicine I was on week post surgery. If your still on pain meds that could be why. Just a thought. -
The area you are describing pain is your pouch. At 3 weeks I had the pain after just a couple of bites. Slow down even more, chew chew chew, and be sure the food is MOIST! It will help especially w complex proteins like tuna, beef, chicken. The pain gets better and subsides. Now it is more like a full feeling w out pain.
-
Where is the pain? Stomach? I know (in three weeks as well) I get pain in my side and/or stomach if I eat too much to fast. You get kinda cocky. It reminds me to slow down.

Mine was swollen for a couple of weeks. I would just double check with your doctor about your concern. I did not use ice or anything, just tried to avoid hitting that section. Good luck.
