    Multivitamin help

I haven't tried it but I saw a bariatric surgeon on youtube recommend adding the chewable vitamins to a protein smoothie to mask the taste.

    November 2022 surgery support!

We have what the doctor calls a boot camp, I try to stick to it as much as I can but essentially is get up have a hot drink, breakfast within 90 minutes of waking up, which is now an egg bite with hummus or some protein shake, then every 2.5hrs to 3 alternate between protein shake, lunch, protein shake and dinner. Meals should only take 30mins so it is whatever I can eat in that time. I have a premier shake which is 30g, I add water and the unflavored protein to make it closer to 40g and split that within the 2 protein shakes I will have in a day. Lunch and dinner are basically the same (tuna/crab salad/ground turkey) and at most 2oz. Then is sipping water all day, I start the moment I open my eyes in bed, even drink throughout the night. Take the bottle to the bathroom and make sure I sip ever 5 to 10 min. Last night I stayed up 30 min just to finish my last 2 ounces 🤣 but he said that as long as I'm getting 40oz I'm doing good, since my program does only count protein shakes as half the liquid.

    Multivitamin help

Sorry, but I think all the chewables are nasty tasting due to the iron content. One option might be opening the capsules and adding it to food. I know some people that struggle with large capsules do this and it works for them. Another thing you could try would be the multivitamin soft chews (kind of like a starburst in consistency). I think they're not great tasting either, but personally feel they're a little better than the regular chewables.

    Gas problems and binder.

some of us get binders, others don't - I never got one - so it's optional. If it's not comfortable, then you don't have to wear it (unless, of course, your clinic directed you to). Gas pains should go away soon...

    December surgery

When do you start your liquid diet, if you start one? I am supposed to start on Monday, the 13th. I hate protein shakes and any sugar substitutes. So, that is the only thing I am really worried about. Going to the store to buy a bunch of soups to strain this weekend. I wish eggs and bacon were liquid. lol
  6. There’s grazing & there’s grazing. Grazing when you eat an appropriately portioned size healthy meal over a few hours or eat several small healthy meals over the day that meet your caloric & nutritional needs are fine. Anything else, like grazing just to eat, or for boredom, etc. or grazing beyond just a mid morning &/or mid afternoon snack can be worrying & lead to the weight gain fear you have. Consider what you’re grazing on & why you’re grazing. Do you exceed your caloric need by grazing? Maybe try the mini meal grazing or eating a meal by picking at it over a few hours. Or even reduce your grazing to just a single between meal snack. (I snack three times a day. It gives me a needed additional 25 odd grams of protein but still fits within my caloric needs.) Worth trying.
  7. Man, I haven't been able to do any kind of working out for the last 5 days because my whole house is SICK. We're all covid negative, but we have a nasty flu and stomach bug and OMG I'm over it. Been resting a lot, taking echinacea, extra vit C, protein shakes with extra protein and greens (stomach bug keeping me from eating too many foods), lots of tea (green tea, white tea, oolong tea), and OTC cough and congestion meds. UGH. Not even remotely feeling Christmasy, just wanna get better. Praying this doesn't turn into pneumonia again (I've had it 5x, and I have lung damage because of it).

    November 2022 surgery support!

Hi doing well here 2 weeks post op. Have been eating tuna with lots of yogurt, had chili once, crab salad, egg bites with hummus, mozzarella cheese, ground turkey, all handled well. My fluids are at about 55oz to 60z but it gets hard, its easier to meet protein with a 30g shake for snacks otherwise I fall at 50g Today have not been hungry since breakfast, but having shakes throughout the day. 9. So, this was a unexpectedly pleasant surprise! I’m on gov’t travel and am almost 2 months post surgery (17 Oct). I was worried about what food to eat and what I could handle, so when I landed I stopped at a CVS and got protein shakes. In the meantime, I’m at a hotel that offers making custom omelettes in the AM, has a fridge and a microwave in the room. So, I’ve been ordering an omelette in the AM, eating a few bites, throwing it in the fridge, and heating it up for dinner 😀😇 The conference I’m at offers fruit pieces for snacks during the day. And it’s in FL, so for lunch I’ve just ordered steamed shrimp or oysters. Super simple, and all I’ve paid for (food-wise) is lunch. I’m making a killing on my per diem! Not used to being able to spend so little to eat. I’m a cheap date now 😂🤣

    November 2022 surgery support!

I'll be a month PO on Sunday and have only just stopped having incision pain in the last day or so -- I didn't take tylenol this morning for the first time in weeks! Had a lot more luck with my water once I switched to a straw cup (my doctor's office confirmed yesterday that they think the literature recommended against straws is outdated) and meeting my protein goals when I started making my own protein shake in the morning with unflavored powder, fairlife milk, and PB2 -- it doesn't really taste like anything, but after all the super sweet protein shakes I had the first few weeks that's exactly what I want.

How’s everyone doing? I have much more strength & energy. One incision is still very painful when I move certain ways. Like a searing heat through the stomach. Yikes! Other than that I’m doing well tolerating my puréed/mushed food & getting all fluids. I do need to focus more on water though. I do better when I carry around a cup of ice & slowly munch throughout the day. I’m 16 days post op & down 18lbs. My doctor was happy when he saw me at 1 week post op & I was down 10. Hope everyone else is doing very well also. What are y’all eating? I wish protein was available in pill form!

    Food Before and After Photos

Last night dinner: Left over Hibachi veggies and I added grilled chicken! YUMMM 226 Cals. 28g protein for all of it. I didn't bother adjusting the serving because the little bit I left wasn't really changing the calories enough to matter.

    August surgery buddies!

I drink my protein with my coffee everyday. I love my cold brew so that is what I mix it with. I use the Level-1 Meal Replacement shakes from here... https://1stphorm.com/collections/protein They actually taste amazing too. And yeah, I used to drink a gallon a day, ad now I can't. I don't really like flavored water too much either, so I just do the best I can.
  14. 6 weeks. When I went to soft foods, measuring every thing to 1/2 cup. 1/3 cup protein, 1/8 cup veggie and 1/8 cup carb. I'm filling more satiety of food and this new life. Found Jenni ground turkey taco seasoned, scrambled eggs with turkey sausage patties diced. I have a few puree meals still frozen as backup if my new food not agreeing with me. But this is also a noticeable hunger that hasn't been there for last 6 weeks.
  15. Some do it & swear by it but then you can find someone who swears by any diet and many for whom they didn’t work. No one diet works for everyone because we have different needs. In maintenance you need to find, not a diet, but a way of eating that works for you. One that is sustainable (this is life long & many diets are short term only), provides your body with what it needs & complements your life & how you want to live it. It may incorporate aspects of many styles of eating. For example I’ve included aspects of keto & Atkins, occasionally include vegetarian meals, usually fast for about 13hrs overnight, etc. I only fast 13+/- hrs because if I eat breakfast too early my tummy doesn’t like it & it sits heavily or I feel blah. And I eat the high protein of keto/Atkins because I don’t absorb protein well. So I included these aspects just to keep my body happy & functioning well. So, sure give intermittent fasting a go & see if it works for you.

    30 lbs away!

So much of this is an individual journey. There are averages & common experiences but a lot of variation too. From whether you’ll lose hair or not & how much you’ll lose & for how long to how fast or slow you lose. As for the hair loss, some, people swear by taking supplements to help with the hair loss (biotin is very popular) but their hair loss still slows to their usual rate after 3 or 4 months like most do. I say save your money. Cut your hair if it’s long so your new growth doesn’t take as long to catch up to the length of your remaining hair. Plus short hair looks thicker & bouncier without the weight of longer hair pulling it down. And it doesn’t look as much in the bottom of the shower. 🙂 As for the rate of weight loss, best advice is to stick to the plan you were given by your dietician. Or if you didn’t get one for past the initial staged return to eating, get in touch with them to review what your eating, guidance & other options yiu could include in your diet. But I agree, 25 lbs in 2 months is a good loss. Remember you lose at your rate & your weight loss will slow as you get close to your goal.

    Not losing Weight

Feeling really discouraged. I had the vertical sleeve on 11-23 and I have only lost 6# in the first two weeks. I am only allowed to have protein drinks, cream of wheat and thin soup for another week. I have been getting my liquids in and about 45-60 grams of protein a day. I was 219 the day of the surgery. Has anyone lost so little the first two weeks and then had the weight start to come off? I am nervous I will be one of the few people that this doesn’t work for!

    August surgery buddies!

Hi everyone! Do any of you add protein powder to your coffee? I drink a few cups of decaf a day, but I know I haven't been getting in as much protein as I should. I don't really want to drink the coffee protein shakes because of the amount of caffeine in them. I want to find a protein powder that dissolves well in coffee, but I don't know where to start. Also, does anyone else have a problem drinking water? I used to love water, but since the surgery it hurts my stomach and sits like a rock unless it's flavored water.

    30 lbs away!

I agree that everyone's journey is different! Before my weight gain, I did have a pretty fast metabolism, as far as what I am doing now is just prioritizing protein and trying to stay away from carbs.

    30 lbs away!

WOOHOO! Congratulations! You will be there before you know it. There is nothing you can do for hair loss but be patient and it will grow back. It is natural and can be accelerated by multiple things. Some people lose hair just from anesthesia, iron deficiency, etc. It is common in WLS because of the lack of calories, your body "dumps" the easiest thing first when fighting. Kind of like why your toes and fingers get frost bite first. There are a ton of supplements but they don't stop hair loss, they just help regrowth. Don't stress it, just keep up on your protein, fluids, vitamins etc. and you will be just fine. Wishing you the best!

    Water intake

Hi, I also had GB and HH repair..along with esophagus repairs due to years of GERD. As mentioned above, at the hospital I was given the 1 oz. medicine cups and filled them up, taking tiny sips. Each cup was about 3 sips and I did this all day long keeping a tally of how many I drank. Each day I could drink a little more of a sip and soon 1 cup became 1 sip. I also made sure EVERY day that I beat the day befores numbers if even only by 1 oz. Broth, shakes, all liquid counted towards my liquid goal and if it had protein even better. I treated it like my own personal competition. By my 2 week follow up I was hitting the low end of my fluid goals. It got a little harder when I started on pureed foods, because my meals weren't liquid anymore. But I created quite a routine and after a few days I was back to hitting the liquid AND protein goal. I would wake up, drink 8oz of high protein milk (Fairlife-12 g protein) which also counted as 8 oz of fluid. Drink 16/20 oz water Drink a 12 oz shake (30 g protein) and 12 oz fluid Drink about 16 oz water Eat: usually egg salad or chicken salad, or ground turkey with taco seasoning all pureed, usually about 5-8g protein because I could eat so little. Drink a clear protein drink, I drank gatorade zero with protein (10 g protein) and 16 oz fluid Drink water until bed. This was and really still is my daily routine now but I can drink like normal and fast so I get about 100 oz of WATER a day and no longer count my shakes as fluid. It was slightly modified when I went back to work but basically wake up and drink a shake, then 3-4 bottle of water before lunch, lunch and 1-2 bottle of water before dinner and after dinner water (or sometimes a suagr free something like lemonade) up until bed. I still drink a shake for breakfast because I just cant eat enough to get in enough protein unless I literally eat all day and then I feel full and bloated all day. You just have to find a schedule that works for you, but either way it takes time to ease back into it. Just don't get dehydrated. Focus on fluids first and then work on protein, at lease that is what my team instructed. Good luck, we are all rooting for you!

    Water intake

It can be difficult at first to get the full 64ozs in. Swelling from the surgery & a sensitive tummy can’t make it more challenging. As long as you’re making an effort & getting closer to the full 64ozs you’ll be ok. And don’t forget your protein shakes, soups, broths, all count to your fluid intake. Often warm drinks are more soothing & easier to drink: try adding green or herbal tea to your daily fluid intake. Protein waters are great addition as well. Some find it helpful to set a timer so they sip every 5+/- minutes. I also drink during the night. 64ozs or 8 cups of liquids is actually the recommended intake goal for all adults not just those who’ve had weight loss surgery. It’s necessary for your body to function effectively.

    Food Before and After Photos

White wine and garlic mussels with artichoke hearts. Ate about roughly half of each (aside from the sauce)… a surprisingly high amount of protein!

    Water intake

you typically never get the full amount for a while after surgery. Even at 8 months post op i struggle to get in the 64 oz of water minimum. As for protein, getting those little one ounce little cups helped a ton. I poured a shot basically and would drink it that way 1 ounce at a time and it was so much easier. Just do the best you can. Take sips throughout the day. Look at your pee... You want it as clear as possible. very yellow pee means you are dehydrated. When i see that i am like oops i need to drink some water lol.
