GERD after Revision! Please help!
kimdlawson06 replied to joeyangel99's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello. I had a revision on 11/5 and my GERD went away immediately. I’ve had a few instances where I felt slight heartburn but it went away quickly. -
Well here I am, 27 days away from bypass and I’m in a panic! I’m starting to think “I can do this by myself”. My family believes in me and has encouraged me saying, “you’re doing so good, you can do this without surgery”. Part of me believes that because honestly I’ve never maintained healthy eating AND exercise for 6 months in my life and here I am!!!I guess I’m just scared of all the risks and what if here I am healthy, I become one of those sickly, complication patients? Is this normal? To get cold feet? I don’t know if I should postpone or just go for it…any encouragement or advice is appreciated!

GERD after Revision! Please help!
joeyangel99 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello, I had my revision from sleeve to bypass on 10/27/21, only 3 weeks ago. I also had hiatal hernia repair, and gallbladder removal all at once. I am feeling good, no vomiting. Still on liquid stage, proceeding to soft solids soon. However, I am feeling GERD again! and worried the revision will not successfully resolve this frustrating issue. The nurse said to give it time. Did anyone have GERD weeks after their revision surgery? If so, did it resolve with time? Please I need some feedback! Thanks! -

November Surgery Buddies!!!

Hello. I am one day post ByPass. 24 hours ago at this time I was taking deep breaths from a mask and waking up 4 hours later in PACU. I went to my room an hour after getting to PACU and started walking within the hour. I had little 1oz glasses of water on a table next to my bed and started sipping. I didn’t drink enough last night but I did OK. Around 7PM all the fluid I had gotten IV decided to start coming out. For the next ten hours I was up to the bathroom every 30 minutes. No real sleep last night. I got a temp of 100.5 around 10PM. I got IV Tylenol. It seemed to go away this morning but it is a little concerning. I decided to avoid pain meds so I am sore but it is tolerable. I feel incredibly bloated and look forward to getting the gas out. No other real symptoms at this point. The residents said I will probably go home today but the surgeon hasn’t come yet. I feel like it is going well. -

Revision from sleeve to RNY. Have you had a second surgery or are you scheduled? Good luck! -
Hey y'all. I'm a little less than a month away from my endoscopy. My doc said basically if I'm clear anywhere from 2 weeks after that I can get my gastric bypass. In the meantime while I wait, I struggle with depression. I know that everything is coming so soon but I can't help but feel scared and stuck. I don't know who else to talk to about this. I feel like I should be happy and excited but I'm overwhelmed and scared of failure before it even begins. I don't know if I need support or tough love but I'm really struggling to stay grounded. I'm just venting but if you have any advice or positive/success stories you want to share, I'd love to hear it. Thanks and hope you all are doing well. It's been 2008 since I had a very successful surgery. Seriously, I swam in SF Sharkfest from Alcatraz to SF 2 yrs in a row. As I've gotten older, I have learned a few things I'd like to pass on to those who might not know this. Someone who has had bariatric surgery can only drink 5 oz of alcohol (wine/beer) and then they are legally drunk (trust me, you look act like you have had way too many drinks--slurred speech, staggering, falling down) and if you were to blow into a breathalyzer, you would get a reading indicating you are inebriated. Although I hadn't had anything to drink in about 30 yrs, during a few social dinners at our house, I had a small glass of wine and then my husband wanted to know just how much I had had to drink. When I say, "Not even one glass of wine," I was in such bad shape that he didn't believe me. He was furious and told me I wasn't to have any more drinks for the night. This also happened at my son's who was just livid with me and told me to go to a spare bedroom for the rest of the night. And, truly, I felt super drunk. At some point, I did some research and learned that because of how small my stomach pouch is and the way liquids are absorbed, I really shouldn't even have a sip of alcohol. Just thought I'd pass that on. Also, I originally lost 137 lbs to get to my goal weight. I maintained it for several years because I was working out regularly. A few yrs ago I started to put some weight back on, mostly because I wasn't exercising as much, I was alone ALL the time because of Covid because my husband was in contact with Covid infected people at the hospital he worked at 5 shifts a week for 1 yr and 9 months until his last day was Nov. 1. My diet wasn't as healthy and we were sleeping in different bedrooms on separate floors because he was so afraid he would test positive and give it to me. All last year, from July through May 29th when I had left hip replacement, I swam in a local lake for 1 hr each session...2x-4x a week with water getting down to 40 degrees. That kept me sane. Both of us have had our Covid vaccination shots and booster shots and I'm back in swimming in the cold water. If you have gained weight during the pandemic, just go through every day thankful and get back on the post-surgery diet your doctor put you on. (Currently, mine is 1200 cal, unless I burn over 900 swimming and only then do I get to add on 300). Even though I was afraid I had "stretched" my stomach pouch (I'll be 68 yrs old in a few weeks), I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy a month ago and the gastroenterologist said everything looks perfect. -
3 months post op and everything I swallow makes me feel like I have heart burn.
Sunnyway replied to Autumnrayne's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
RNY Gastric Bypass is usually the best surgical technique for people who have heartburn or GERD. It usually eliminates those issues and type II diabetes. Are you drinking or eating too quickly? Try slowing down to sips or tiny bites well chewed. -

Scheduled for a mini gastric bypass this Friday, the 19th. Trying today to get a list together of everything I need as far as new foods and drinks so I can have it all in house by then. Confusing with so many different sites/people saying different things or mentioning different products. I would really appreciate any help or sites that kind of lay it out in simple terms. I've been given a lot of paperwork from the doctor and hospital and met with the hospital's bariatric person. Just ordered disposable medicine cups and case of Ensure Max Protein (suggested by Dr.'s PA) Also bought a bag of Bariatric Advantage Calcium Chews and Bariatric Fusion Multivitamins from them to start out on but will source out equivalent products that may be less expensive during my week off next week. Any tips or things to watch out for are welcome. Thanks in advance! -

I'm a single man and have to handle this alone and would really appreciate any help or sites that kind of lay it out in simple terms. Guess how I feel afterwards will dictate what I drink the 1st few days or week, but still unsure of how often and what is allowed or suggested as a whole. Thanks in advance

Reflux happens to many people after the sleeve. I get it if I eat too quickly or if I wait too long between times eating. Call your surgeon. There are stronger medications you can take. Some people do have a revision to gastric bypass to resolve it but usually only after medication can’t resolve it. -
revision Does Mini Gastric Bypass 'feel' the same as being Sleeved?
slimsuz posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi 7 years ago I had a sleeve gastrectomy, I had a great result and kept the weight off till this year where I have rapidly regained around half of my loss of 100lbs. I am considering a revision to MGB. I was wondering how it 'FEELS' - do you feel full in the same way as you did with your sleeve? How was recovery compared to your sleeve? Theres a lot of info I can find on results and toleration of foods but I'm curious to know if it 'feels' any different to you? Thanks in advance! Suzanne x -
I'm a little over a year post-op revision and I still have "dumping" episodes a couple times a week. It was MUCH WORSE the first couple months after surgery. Unfortunately, there isn't really any rhyme or reason to when I dump. Yes, high sugar and high fat items are sometimes a trigger, but overeating anything can have the same result. I get hot flashes, then severe bloating followed by diarrhea. But, dumping does keep me honest when it comes to watching what I eat. And I have to be super careful about my eating when I'm not at home!

December 2021 Friends?
Sunnyway replied to EllieV's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Until about 18 months ago I did not know that RNY revisions were even possible. Had I known I would have had done it long ago. Medical science has come a long way in 30 years! My original RNY was done in 1990. It failed after 6 months and a 75-lb weight loss. I regained the weight lost at about 10 lbs a year, returned to my original high weight of 300+ lbs, and stayed there for over 20 years despite many efforts to lose. Over the years my pouch stretched from 2 oz to 9 oz, the anastomosis stretched, and a fistula developed between pouch and stomach (which was not separated at that time). The revision will reduce the size of the pouch and anastomosis, and will separate the remnant stomach. My surgeon estimates I'll lose another 60 lbs over the 50 I've lost pre-surgery. I'm hoping for another 75 lbs. Either way, I'll still be obese, but in better shape than I am now. -

I had my bypass on Oct. 5. I honestly feel this have been the worse decision but each day is getting better. I just can’t wait for the day where I am out of the post op depression rut and be happy about my decision. Soooo aggravating! Cheers to all of you! -
Is GERD worse in the beginning months after surgery?
catwoman7 replied to lindseylovesdogs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm a little surprised they didn't recommend the bypass, either. I was an older patient as well, but because of my GERD history, my surgeon recommended the bypass (although he said he'd do either one). I hope this gets better for you - yikes! I'm sorry to hear this. -
sounds like you've got it covered. Everything was provided for me as well - I just brought my phone and charger and some Chapstick and Biotene spray (I don't remember if I used them or not - but a lot of people do). And comfy, easy-to-put on clothes for the ride home (I just wore the same thing home that I did to the hospital). and yes, bypass patients usually spend the night. Sleeve patients, too. I've heard of some cases where people (I think sleeve) have just been there for the day, but it doesn't sound like that's very common. I'd plan on having to spend the night there.
