Diet Pills during Post-Op?
WrenBird replied to RoxyChick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Please understand that I mean my responses in the NICEST possible way. You still need a lot of willpower for the band to be successful. The band does 1/4 of the work, you have to have the willpower to do the rest. Some people get the band because they're hungry all the time...I'm sure if you told a thin person who's hungry to stop eating, they wouldn't. Where I'm from a doctor will only approve a patient for LAP-BAND if they've tried everything else and failed. I'm assuming this is going to be different in other places, but I think it's a pretty important factor...I think that surgery should be the last resort. Lucky. For some reason appetite suppressants didn't work as well for me as the band did...I don't think you should regret the band until you get your first fill. I felt the same way :-) You need to do what's best for you. No judgement here on that one! Uhhh...I don't quite know how to answer your question then lol. I felt the same way as you did (except I may have been a bit more pissed off than you). I was in depression for a few weeks after the band because it wasn't supressing my appetite. After I'd had a fill I felt great and everything went fine. I know how agonisingly annoying it is to hold back from food, but it gets easier. So far I've lost 15 kilos in under 2 months. That's 33 lbs. I didn't really start losing my weight until I got a fill. I exercise for 10 hours a week and don't eat refined sugar or carbs. For me that's been as tough as hell to overcome. I remember sitting in my bed thinking about the full fat yogurt downstairs in the fridge and crying to myself. Yes, crying. I then remembered eating a giant pizza right before my surgery and crying AFTER that...I think knowing how bad I'll feel after eating it is my greatest motivation to keep away from food. I really hope this works out for you. I know this isn't something you wanna here but...It gets easier :-P -

3 days post op- feeling of stuck with liquids
Indigo1991 replied to pancake1271's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Think you put your finger on it when you said clear liquids are going down fine but thicker liquids are feeling stuck. At only a few days out, everything is still very swollen and the feeling you are likely to be having is the signal to tell you to stop drinking, you're full. The little you have had to drink in terms of Protein shake or yogurt may not seem enough to have filled your stomach - but it will be. Take it easy, stick to what you're doing but don't force anything down. As the swelling goes down over the next couple of weeks, it will get easier and you will notice a difference soon. Congratulations on your weight loss to date, good luck on joining the sleeved side :-) -
I was drinking isopure but it was making me sick then my NUT told me to dilute it with water.... Much better ! Also okios Greek yogurt triple zero has a lot of protein- lived on the Vanella - still do. Another tip is Iso 100 protein powder - very high protein low sugar and carbs mixed with 25 calorie almond milk...delish I get it at the vitamin shop.
-
I didn't start eating greek yogurt until after I was banded and I now love it! Whole foods market has a great variety. It's also becoming pretty popular ... I was at a grocery store the other day and saw that Yoplait and Dannon now make greek yogurt. The yoplait was around 110 calories with 12g of protien I think.
-
I love Greek Yogurt. I buy plain 0% and add in either fresh fruit, low fat granola or surger free spread. I cannot eat it plain but it is a great source of protein.
-
The taste of the Fage Greek yogurt varies (at least for me) between the 0%, 2% and full fat versions. I just can't eat the 0% Fage, but love the 2% and given that I only eat 1/3 C. at a time, I have no qualms about eating that. Plus my doctor said it was fine. The Chobani w/fruit is okay for "taking with me" snacks but at home I only eat the Fage from the tub.

My food palette is so much smaller... I can't stand most food. St paddy's day meal used to be my favorite, I was gagging while cookin it for the family and didn't eat a single bite. Right now the only food I can eat without feeling nauseous is fresh mozzarella, black olives, pickles, garlic hummus and triscuts - I still use unflavored Protein powder in my crystal lite and eat 1 sometimes 2 Protein Bars per day. Even yogurts are tasting too sweet. It's VERY depressing. Flip side - im steadily losing weight (down 30lbs since surgery 8 weeks ago) and am rarely hungry. It's common, and you just have to find a happy medium. Your tastes will Change on the turn of a dime, and from what I've been told in due time you will enjoy foods again
-
I used the powder and just mixed it in my yogurt - od'd a bit and had some problems on day 4 but that resolved itself. I am 2 weeks out and still need some help in that department.

Whew!12 days post op! Doing Great!
Baptist Bandster commented on Baptist Bandster's blog entry in Blog 47200
well glad to hear about your surgery. i guess by now your feeling pretty ok. i had an awful first week with the hunger and stuff, and at times thought i had made a terrible choice, but i guess your mental state at that time is not to secure so i guess that's what i was going through. now i feel i am finally getting control of this new lifestyle. per my doctor, i should be consuming liquids (thinned soup-no chunks-i thin it with chicken broth since it gives it a little more flavor and i usually eat about 4 ounces; pudding; yogurt no fruit pieces, popsicles, protein water-kellogs is great just a little pricey; pudding and of course all these are sugar free. you even half to watch the sugar calories in these even though they say no sugar, they still may contain some; i also have had hot chocolate sugar free of course and use skim milk. the first week i didn't want to eat much (or drink i should say) so i lost 12 the first week. this week i guess i have lost my hunger appetite and still have to force myself to eat and drink. At times, i get hungry, but not very often. per my doc. you should be consuming water and protein water at least 48-64 ounces a day to ensure you don't get dehydrated and food wise 3-4 ounces at a time in good liquid. my doctor has me on a 500 calories 30g of protein for the first 3 weeks and then i go to pureed food like cottage cheese, applesauce, mashed tators and a little thicker consistency at 800 calories per day 80 grams for the next 3-6 weeks. this is my diet, i know everyone varies from doctor to doctor, so i guess you should follow your doc orders. what do they tell you to do? Are you loosing weight fast or slow? I go for my first fill Nov 11 and i hear this is pretty painless but well see. hope your doing well, don't know about you, but this has been a major milestone in my life. i only had about 60 pounds to lose (i am 5'7 235 at surgery and now 217) so not to far to go. I'll pray for you that you continue to do good and keep in touch. i would love to know how your progress goes. -
Restriction changes from meal to meal
Ms. Vicki replied to wannabelean's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Boy are these threads hitting a "home run" with me. I've only had one fill and keep thinking I need to go for another. Most days I can eat anything I want, just have to chew a bazillion times. However, on Easter Sunday, we went to a BBQ and I add some venison sausage, brisket and a couple of deviled eggs. Finished it off with a bite (really) of the desserts my family ate. Yesterday, I felt queasy all day and didn't want to eat anything, but managed a boiled egg, some yogurt and a few goldfish (crackers). Last night I ate some Pbutter saltine crackers and drank a big glass of peach tea. This morning I still feel like I have something "stuck in my throat", and have no desire to eat anything. Could this be caused by the band? I've not felt "queasy" since I was banded on 2/20/06. I don't know if I'm fighting a virus or if the band is to blame. Any thoughts? Thanks -
My surgery day is the same as you. 6/27. 6/7: A group counseling session 6/9: Pre/op day. Meeting with the surgeon again, NUT to review pre/post op diet and bone density scan 6/13: start two week high Protein liquid diet. I believe I am allowed 4 oz of real protein, like chicken, yogurt, eggs and unlimited no starchy veggies with 4 Protein shakes a day. 6/27: THE BIG DAY! I am scheduled to arrive at the hospital at 1:15pm which makes me nervous since you can have nothing to drink, not even Water after Midnight! We're surgery twins!!

How many pounds have you guys lost in your first 2 weeks after surgery
Gaylancsu replied to iHaveh0pe3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was down 15 pounds after 1 week and 20 after 2 and nothing more in the 3rd, in fact it rebounded a little but then levelled off and has been staying at 20. Frustrating in a way because I'm tracking my food and I've not broken 1000 calories in a day (which before would cause me massive weight loss). I sprained my knee 2 days before surgery and it's still healing (eveytime I think it's better and try to even do a healthy walk it hurts so bad the next day). I'm going to get an exersize bike this weekend to see if I can work on that and not hurt my knee... but yeah, it's super annoying (as I sit here trying to make it to lunch on just having a homemade smoothie with Greek yogurt, protein powder and peaches and feeling absolutely STARVED) -
Weight Gain 2 Years Post-op
Idairene replied to Idairene's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for your posts. I'd really like to hear from folks that are 2-3 years out of surgery. There are different challenges then. The Hunger and cravings come back, you've tried the same recipes and tired of learning new ones. The excitement of fitting in clothes or in an airplane seat is now something you take for granted. Your support system is less and there's a social and cultural expectation for you to go back to eat "normal" again. You've become active and have switched to a number exercise routines. And the reality hits that it is low fat cottage cheese and Greek yogurt as your primary diet for the rest of your life. In short, the thrill is gone and the hard work is really up to you -
Ok Guys.. What Was In Your Menu Today?
otters38 replied to JennyBee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good idea!! I am 2 1/2 weeks post op so I am in bandster hell right now, but still trying to stick to eating well. Breakfast--2 egg whites, 1 egg yolk Lunch--1/2 turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread and applesauce Dinner--grilled tilapia, and half of a bacon potato with ff sour cream I didn't add the calories up but from all of the weight watcher days, I know I'm good. Tonight I will either have a ff fudgesicle or yogurt. -
What was your post-op diet like?
awayfrmitall replied to hodegard's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
This is the band manufacturer recommendation: Liquids for 3 to 4 days then to solid food Mary, I have my patient handbook from the manufacturer right here. It very clearly says that weeks 1-4 are for liquid and very soft food then they go on to list examples like Soup (no vegetables), yogurt, milk & Jello. Then they go on to say that weeks 4 to 6 are for thicker foods etc... I don't see anywhere where they recommend solid food after 3 to 4 days... My band book is by Bioentrics (Ihamed)... Do you have a different band? Jamie -
I've got six weeks of full liquids to look forward to so am pretty familiar with it and will be following this thread for new ideas to avoid it getting too monotonous. My basic full liquid diet prescribed by my surgeon includes: Water, Decaf tea and sugar-free non-carbonated beverages like Crystal Light and Diet Snapple. No sugar added apple, white grape and cranberry juice diluted by 1/2 with water. Sugar-free Jello. Sugar-free popsicles. Sodium-free and fat-free chicken, turkey, beef and vegetable broth. Sodium-free and fat-free cream of tomato and cream of broccoli soups - store bought only. Blended fat-free yogurt. Skim milk. Apple sauce. My nutritionist added: Greek yogurt. Whey Protein powder. Other cream soups including homemade as long as the chunks are either removed or blended completely.

Thank you for the kind words. I don't use a food journal because I make a menu on Sunday and follow that the entire week. In other words..I plan before I put the food in my mouth. My band mom "IndioGirl AKA Janet" does journal everything. I like not having surprises. I want to know exactly what I am going to eat and when I am going to eat it. Either way I think it is important to record what you are eating. That way you can go back and see what you did when you were successful and when you were not. At first I did journal but I got sick of writing "licked fingers while cooking...approx. 12 calories" yes I was that detailed:biggrin: Then I found that if I made a menu I was more likely to have less of those incidents because I am a rule follower and that worked for me. So I think either a menu or a food journal is good. Whatever fits your personality. I always ate 1 cup of food. I had to measure it out because even with the band I have a hard time stopping when I am full. So if I could clean my "very tiny" plate then I felt like I had accomplished something. I am at work now, but on my computer at home I have a bunch of recipes that I will try to post on Thursday. I am going to be out of town this afternoon and all day tomorrow, but I will post them on here when I get back. If you are still hungry and you have eaten your Proteins...eat more veggies. They will fill you up and keep you full...if you eat them after your Protein. It takes the protein a while to make it through the pouch so if you add the veggies on top you will stay fuller longer. Breakfast choices: KashiGo Lean Cereal with Lite and Fit yogurt (I can't do milk) Johnsonville turkey sausage 1 scrambled egg with FF cheese Sausage and egg lean pocket Crustless quiche. lunch (usually was leftovers from dinner) 1 CUP!:biggrin2: Afternoon Snack Pure Protein Bar (that is the brand name. I get them at Wal-mart...stay away from the fruit ones...they are gross!) dinner Spaghetti (with about 6 noodles so I didn't feel left out!) Stir Fry (I can't do rice) Ground chicken Meatloaf (I grind my own chicken with my Kitchen Aide) Tuna Casserole with Beans instead of noodles Lasagna with beans instead of noodles. Chili with ground chicken Chicken cordon bleu (with a yummy low cal sauce) Fish and veggies Hope this is what you are looking for. I bought the gladware 1 cup containers and that is what I used faithfully! Glad you stopped by. Let me know if there is anything else you need!

I'm four months out and just started eating cereal with milk on occasion. I try to get at least 10-15 grams of protein at breakfast, and cereal just didn't fit with that plan until now. I eat Kashi Go Lean which has 13 grams of protein per cup (though I usually only have 1/2-2/3 cup at a time with the same amount of skim milk). I let it sit for a few minutes so it is not so crunchy. It is also good when added to non-fat, vanilla or plain greek yogurt.

Different plans seem to have some differences in what’s considered a liquid or a purée. I’ve heard that some plans consider yogurt a liquid, and some people are even allowed to eat yogurt while still in the hospital. I couldn’t have yogurt until purées (1 week post-op). And I couldn’t have eggs until soft foods, but I didn’t even try them until I was almost 3 months out because I’ve read that a lot of people don’t tolerate them early on. Fortunately, I haven’t had any problems with scrambled eggs. I’ve read that adding cottage cheese to scrambled eggs make them more tender, so I add 1/2 ounce cottage cheese to 1 egg.

Normal restriction or too tight?
StaceyLink posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just got my 2nd fill last week and I've been having a hard time eating. I know that's kinda the point of the band, but I eat 4 bites and find myself with discomfort in my chest. The food does seem to go down though. I'm eating slowly with small bites, but now I find myself wanting more yogurt or slidey foods to supplement the 4 bites of real food. Is this normal restriction or is the band too tight? -
Anyone who might know this answer. I am scheduled for the band on 17 Jan. I started on all liquids Monday, and have done pretty well until last night. Hunger has not been as much of an issue as my lactose intollerance. I had no idea it was this bad because I don't use milk or yogurt much. I have been following the 60-80mg of protien shakes, no/low-cal liquids and broths, with about 45 carbs or less per day. Last night I woke up at 1 AM with my stomach in major pain. my reg stomach meds did not work, so ran to get acidophilis and lactaid when the store opened, So far I am a littel better. I am wondering if I cooked eggwhites with 1 egg for the full protien and had broth for the evening if that woudl hurt. It wouid simply give my system a break from the milk based stuff. Does anyone know???

Is anyone else having a problem with dairy? Not the actual eating/getting dairy products down, but the digestion? It almost feels like I am lactose intolerant now!! I had a yogurt, cheese, and some ice cream (not all together!) but in total today and my trips to the bathroom have been more than frequent (to be polite! :kiss ) Anyone else have any input on this?

My favorites were, in no particular order: fat free refried Beans with a little sour cream cottage cheese with chives scrambled eggs (or eggbeaters) eggbeaters omelet with cheese Fage yogurt with a little honey tuna/crab/or salmon mixed with mayo and a little relish crabcakes baked ricotta (ricotta mixed w/a little eggbeaters and parmesan, topped with pizza sauce and mozzarella). The idea of pureeing meat kind of grossed me out...

No, I was on pureed diet one week out. At 12 days, they told me I could have 1.5 oz protein and 1 oz. fruit or veggies per meal (3) with a yogurt for dessert. I have gotten nauseous twice ( not even able to eat 1 oz protein and forget fruit/veggies) I went back to purees. Trouble is, now all the protein powders make me gag.
