April 2019 Surgeries!
DebReed674 replied to CajunSam's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am currently 3 days post OP revision lapband removal and gastric bypass. I'm hurting, but not doing to bad. Good luck to those having surgery right now. I think the gas or bloating is almost the worst. Sent from my SM-G970U using BariatricPal mobile app -
I was afraid to tell my husband about my revision. As we are both on my insurance from my employer. They only cover me for this procedure. He has a little GERD and was sleeved a month after my sleeve. We used his insurance. Additionally, he is a cáncer Survivor. I feel alot guilt. However, I must still move forward. Revision to rny
krash11 replied to dreamingofasleeve's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I went 3 years with the GERD before my revision. I didn't get on med's until I went to a new surgeon to see about the revision, It helped right away. I found out about the Barrett's when he sent me for my pre op scope. I had gained 60 lbs with the sleeve after loosing 100 with the lap band (it went bad and had to come out). My revision has been a breeze. I'm down 40 lbs and feeling great. The recovery was easier than both my previous surgeries. I have no regrets what so ever. -
Not getting any support from my husband about getting my sleeve revision to gastric Bypass,he thinks this is a stupid idea and is very negative about everything. Tomorrow is my surgery and I have to be there at 5:30 am and he’s even complaining about that because God forbid he loses his precious sleep.

Exactly!! I have the same sentiments. I just had a tube and port replacement that was torn during a previous surgery and due to my insurance at that time it wasn’t caught and was gaining all my weight back since I had no restriction. Finally back on my journey!! My current Bariatric surgeon actually recommended repair instead of removal and revision. His view was if it was successful when you had it working, give it another shot before something more drastic.

BMI OF 31 AND 35 LB TO LOSE. IS IT WORTH IT?
elcee replied to nssmia's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My BMI when I got my band in 2009 was approx 32. Was it worth it ? HELL YES! I got down to a BMI of approx 22 before I slowly regained. Revised to RNY in Jan at a BMI of 28 ( due to reflux and other issues) and am now down to a BMI of 23. -
I have 0 support. Friends out of state have my back but no one here. I’m taking an Uber to the hospital, my brother in law is kindly picking me up and my mom refuses to bring an overnight bag for me since I can’t bring it to check in. She’s made it clear she does not support my bypass revision even though it could save my life long-term (cancer, aspiration pneumonia). Surgery is Thursday and I’ve left the anxious stage after doing a thorough bedroom cleaning and now I’m just depressed knowing the mom I supported through my sister’s death (32 and I moved in with her so she isn’t alone) and she makes me completely alone when I’m most vulnerable. Sadly, I depend on these forums for support.

BMI OF 31 AND 35 LB TO LOSE. IS IT WORTH IT?
Briswife15 replied to nssmia's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Something caught my eye about your post...you have GERD, and there is a real possibility that the sleve surgery would make your GERD a lot worse. Do some looking around on this forum and you will find those having sleeve to RNY revision due to severe GERD. So, based on how little you have to lose, and your preexisting condition, My opinion is that you shouldn't have the sleeve surgery. Keep trying through diet modification and exercise. Revision to rny
krash11 replied to dreamingofasleeve's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I got terrible reflux after my sleeve and developed Barrett's Esophagus. Got the revision in December and have had no reflux. I have been on nexium and now prevacid but am going to get scoped next week to see if the Barrett's has cleared up and get off the meds. -
April 2019 Surgeries!
Lilliana022007 replied to CajunSam's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello. I’m Lori my surgery date is April 25th. A revision from band to gastric bypass. -
I had my band removed one year ago. My surgeon would not do the revision at the same time, which I’m glad as I had complications. I am now 8 days post op with VSG! I really wish I would have went with this originally! Good luck to you.

Hi friends, I was sleeved almost 5 months ago and all was well until I tried to stop taking my pantoprozole around 8 weeks. I have had hearburn everyday since if I do not take the medicine. I do not want to take an acid reducer long term. So I've been trying to ween off it but it's not working. It scares the crap out of me. Just trying to see if anyone has had the same issue? Did it get better? Did you get a revision to rny? I am so scared to get a revision but reflux is scary and no fun at all. It can cause long term issues and damage that scares me also. I also know someone who was revised and is still having issues with reflux even after revision. Any encouragement is greatly appreciated. Hey ya’all. I am 3 days post op from a lap band revision to the RNY bypass. It wasn’t the smoothest of recoveries. I was sick for almost 2 days. Vomiting more than I was taking in. Also I got Crepitus from my breast to my eyes and it swelled up my left side of the face. That has subsided a bit but still painful in the neck and it rubs on the inside so I get terrible chest and upper back pain. Now my abdomen on the left is so swollen than my left upper this is swollen. Feel like a fatty. The worse of it all is that i gained 22 pounds in the hospital and I ate barely anything. I just about lost it when I got home. But since I couldn’t eat anything they continuously pumped in fluids. Anyone else out there he any of these problems and relate and help me through this “scary phase” of healing? Otherwise I am pretty excited I had it done. I was able to drink a crystal light tonight and not get heart burn like I would have with the band so i was excited about that.

That was my experience with the sleeve too. I never had heartburn before surgery, and it was in full force afterwards. My surgeon told me that if I still needed to take the reflux medication a year post op that I should make an appointment to see him. I was so stubborn and didn't want to have to get another surgery so I suffered through almost another year of really bad reflux. Finally 3 months ago I decided enough was enough. I had to go through some awful awful tests to give my surgeon enough info to recommend the revision surgery. I just hope after all this I can finally get some relief. Hopefully you won't still have the reflux after a year out but if you do just be prepared to possibly have to go through another surgery. This might help you down the line if you're doubting getting the surgery, I have to keep reminding myself of the bigger picture here because if I don't get the surgery to fix this then that acid will more than likely do some serious damage to my esophagus (more than it already has).

ESG Self-Pay - Questions
Hop_Scotch replied to Michelle F's topic in Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Forum
In Australia (self pay too) it may be different than where you are but, 1. Standard blood tests to establish base points and any comorbities (not that I probably needed comorbities my weight was high enough), also need a test for H-pylori (negative for me), if positive would have needed a course of antibiotics. 2. General anesthesia 3. Yes, but this really depends on the doctor. Some doctors do it to ensure a pattern of compliance, if someone can't do two weeks pre -op liquid/shake diet how will someone be able to manage the post-op liquid diet?? 4. None for me. Some people for various reasons have lost restriction. Tests have revealed that the sutures have become lose or undone. Reason may include non-compliance with post op guidelines, doctor inexperienced with ESG and suture placement, some people who have had a gastric balloon prior to ESG have a higher failure rate, some people with severe vomiting (due to other illnesses) which has caused sutures to loosen...and then there are the people for some inexplicable reasons the ESG has failed even though they have followed all the insructions and they have experienced doctors etc. Some points to bear in mind for ESG: weight loss will likely be slower and lower than the surgical options (average weight loss is 20% of excess weight, some people have lost a lot more, some people have lost less), adherance to post op guidelines is vital - it will help the suture anchor points heal which will help the restriction hold tight. Like the surgical options there is a weight loss sweet spot, for the ESG it is probably the first six months to 12 months. It's tool, we need to make it work to ensure the best weight loss, this means a compliance with post op guidelines for diet and exercise, will need to change all those not so healthy eating habits particularly emotional eating. Generally the ESG is not reversible, and it has been said that for those who choose to have a revision (where the ESG has failed) that a VSG is not a safe option (though I have seen research where such revision has been successful) - i think it may be a chase of the suture anchor points may get in the way of a VSG. Bypass seems to be the surgeons' choice for ESG revision to surgical option. Another ESG is also a viable revision. -
Anyone Else Have Nighttime Reflux Coughing Or Vomitting?
SeattleLady replied to Bekah_GA's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Yes, I have had reflux since shortly after my sleeve. Recently, I had add what I call the "reflux cough." My throat is always sore. My revision is in Mid-May. Sent from my SM-J727T1 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I recently had a revision to a distal RNY. I understand that malabsorption of vitamins and minerals is more of a concern with this procedure than with standard RNY, so I am wondering if there are any specific recommendations for a multivitamin with this procedure. I have been taking the Celebrate Multivitamin for the past five years with good results, but am also considering the ProCare Health capsules and the Bariatric Fusion soft chews. I love the potential convenience of taking the ProCare just once a day, but I worry if I’ll be able to absorb everything I need in one serving. Thanks for all of your help!

November 2018 Sleevers!?!?
dreamingofasleeve replied to Sealeafi's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Oh I definitely hope so 🤞 The past 2 weeks I have been trying to ween off my pantoprozole and have switched to taking pepcid (famotidine) everyday to combat hyperacidity. It is much less powerful and seems to be working so I am also hoping it gets better also. Just scares me because GERD is serious and you don't want to mess with Barrett's esophagus, and revision is usually the only definite fix. [emoji20] Everyone I have talked to says give it time but I am such a worry wart. My surgeon didn't seem concerned if the PPI was controlling it but it just isn't something I want to take long term. Hi not scheduled but have been struggling with heartburn and have considered a revision just want to follow everyone and see how you all do! I never had heartburn pre sleeve and it is so awful and frustrating [emoji20] This was one of my fears getting surgery as I didn't want to have to revise to rny. I am only 4.5 months out from my sleeve and everyone tells me to give it time but it's just scary. Just trying to be ok with it if this is the path I need to take! I took omeprazole 40mg twice daily plus Tums as needed. But after 8 months, I was still hoarse most days by 10 am. Plus, they've started warnings about taking omeprazole longer than 6 months. I was showing no improvement. So, we decided on a revision.

I just got my surgery date last week. I'll be getting the revision from sleeve to bypass also. My date is May 13th. I'm way more nervous about the surgery this time around.

I'm in STL, MO. Curious about my surgeon and a review I recently found.
killerqueen86 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi guys, I was curious if anyone is from or around St. Louis? I am set to have my surgery in 2.5 weeks. I did my research before joining the program back in August and thought I was happy. Recently, I found a review on my sugeon that freaked me out a bit. First, let me say she has great reviews for the most part. But there is a review by a lady claiming that my doctor only removed 20% of her stomach during her sleeve surgery. I don't know the situation. Maybe there was a reason for this. She said that she had to have revision surgery 2 years later in 2016 and her new surgeon claims that my surgeon has a reputation for being conservative in the sense of how much she removes during VSG. I DON'T WANT TO HAVE A REVISION! So, do you guys think she is bitter and her new surgeon is just shady in stating this, basically saying she doesn't do good work? Or should I be worried and use a different surgeon? I don't know how to feel. I do understand that a lot of reviewers are the upset ones and are more likely to do said review. And there are probably 10 more that never took to the internet and claimed their success. Maybe I'm overthinking this. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app -
For everyone who has had a MGB or RNY, what can I expect as far as diarrhea? I’m sure everyone’s experience has been different. I will be having my sleeve revised to a MGB on 8/1 and really the diarrhea issue I’ve heard about post op is what has me worried! I understand it happens initially post-op....... but is it a forever thing?? Every time you eat you have to run to the bathroom? How does it affect your work life daily? Going out to dinner or to a special event? In my mind this diarrhea is going to be a full time job. Lol. Any thoughts to share?
