  1. So I am at the end of week 4 post op and I noticed a couple of days ago a sudden change in my ability to eat things. Food is going down easier as long as I take my time and chew it well and less things are coming back up. I have been able to broaden my range of food significantly in the last couple of days from basically not tolerating anything but soup consistency to being able to manage a tiny bit of chicken breast and salad. I think that maybe internal swelling has finally settled down, combined with being much more careful about how I chew, mouthful size and rests between bites. I hope this gives hope to those of you who are still only a few days out from surgery and struggling.
  2. I m schedule for the same on 12th March so yayyy You should have started with your pre-op diet your diet will be less than a week and yes isopure ready to drink flavors are quite nice and chocolate and coffee and banana flavors are good when it comes to the Protein shakes. H. Pylori is bad enough considering you are already on medication and antibiotics, and your surgeon is ok with it... I personally think you should stress yourself on it. And just go with what your doctor says. I m sure you will do well... Goodluck!

    This weekend ...

I suggest saving one or two items that you wore all the time that are your largest sizes for sure. The fun of trying those on six months from now is well worth it! I have a pair (my largest size pants) of 24. I am currently in a 14 and those /4 literally fall off my body. It's always fun to do a fashion show for my family. They see me everyday and sometimes forget how sick I was. It's a good reminder to never get to that point again. Also keep a shirt or two for the same reason. I have always bought my shirts one size larger because my upper arms were really big and almost everything I bought the sleeves were too tight. Good luck with your pre op diet, you are lucky it is only 3 days. I was 2 weeks. I hope you have a safe surgery and very speedy recovery. Good luck on Monday! P.S. Try reading a good book this weekend, taking a nice hot bath and listening to music. It makes time go by and really relaxes you as you head into Monday.
  4. Any other Dr. Trieu patients in here? Dr. Trieu did my surgery on March 26th. I have had a great experience with both him and the hospital. I had my first fill today. It went well, no pain. I thought it would be much worse. I am hoping my fill speeds up my weight loss. I am down 23 pounds including my preop weight loss but have been at a standstill the last 4 weeks. Anyone have any insight on how their weight changed following their first fills?

To anyone who lost weight Pre-op

My doctor put me on a lean protein and green veg diet for the week before my op - it worked really well and I lost about 6-7 pounds the week before. I basically got South Beach protein meal replacement bars and had them along with fish and chicken - broccoli and lettuce... it worked. Good luck!
  6. I didn't see a February 2012 sub-folder in the "monthly" topics...I was approved Dec 13 and finally got a date yesterday of 2/22 !!. Boy was that a loooooong road. They are supposed to email my pre op diet instructions next week.
  7. Well, you may have gathered from the topic title that my last appointment did not go well. I think you could call that an understatement. As many of you will have seen from my last posting I have been having huge problems with Water retention and water tablets not working. I decided to return to my old water tablets on the day of my appointment and did lose 9lbs of water in just over 3.5 hours. Hooray! So that helped alot but I was still carrying at least another 5lbs extra water. Soooo, I went and got weighed and then we had the talk...obviously I had not lost the 5% required and therefore they could not put me forward for surgery. (I had lost the weight but then had the problem with the water tablets and gained water weight!) I explained about the water tablets (that they insisted should be changed!) but it didn't help at all. The woman I was dealing with was just so unhelpful and unfeeling. I showed her my ankles (they were measuring over 16 inches and so full of water/oedema it was impossible to miss) She said and I quote " lots of people have water tablets and they all manage to lose the 5% required!" I was devastated. I asked to speak to someone else above her as I couldn't believe her attitude. The upshot is they are giving me another two weeks to reach the 5% goal. I hope I can do it but with all this water still hanging around I am seriously worried, as they still want me to use the other tablets!!!!! Are they mad, what part of, they are not working, don't they understand. Sometimes I really worry about the NHS and their not too bright staff. (that is not really fair as most people are just brilliant - I was just really 'lucky' and got the moron!) So here we go again, the milk diet for another two weeks (that will make a total of 8 weeks) and if by week one the water is just sitting there I am definitely going against their advice and using my old tablets! Sorry for going on, but I really needed to get that off my chest.
  8. Surgery 2-6 here too! Only a week left!!

    Anyone from the NJ/NY area?

I'm from Long Island. I'm just starting The process, I went for initial consult 3 weeks ago and started 3 mos diet. I'm just going for all my Clearence Dr appts now.
  10. Buy really small bowls and baby spoons... and just practice eating like 1/2 cup of whatever real slow... I did it some before surgery just to see how it would feel. I sure didn't do it consistently...but tried it out. After surg you won't have a choice and your stomach def lets you know you have had enuf after a few oz. It's a GREAT tool!!! 5 weeks tomorrow and down #24.
  11. Hi all, I have Kaiser NorCal and I am scheduled for the seminar in two weeks. I have been seeing conflicting info regarding what the process is. Mt doctor has already told me that she will refer me to the surgeon after the seminar. What is the process like after that? Thanks in advance.
  12. Just saying thanks to the replies i got when i was stressed about my band, i wrote last month. I did go and see my surgeon, he had no explanation for my lack of restriction. So i got a fill. At the moment i have a 4ml band in place. And when i had my fill, he said once withdrawn and put back in that i had approx 3.4mls in band. i went back in a week as the restriction was the same even after .2mls had been put in, to make the 3.4. i had another fill and to his calculations i now have 3.8 mls in a 4 ml band. I was nervous to take a drink, as i new this was pretty full up. Water went down ok, i had half a cup of mince for tea, that went down ok, i was very careful though. i have lost a furthur 2 kilos in this last 2 weeks, but i train at the gym 5 times a week, i do work and have a family. The restriction is still there but i can eat a toasted sandwich if im careful, and last night i had half a chicken breast fillet and crab meat for dinner, took a while but got through most of it. Im still concerned, i have an appointment on the 19th of march with my surgeon, i will get him to check how much is in the band. Any comments are welcome. I was banned 14th Feb 05 (weight)116kg Today i weigh 88.6kg and have lost 89cm's in total all over. Im not sure how to put up photos on this thing otherwise i would. I live in Australia in the Hunter Valley.
  13. I think I've decided I'm going to be completely open about it. Part of me wants to go into the "it's none of your business" area, but I figure if I'm taking three weeks off from work for the surgery, and then I (hopefully) will drop a hundred pounds in six to nine months, I think it's going to be pretty obvious.
  14. I'm really selective who I tell about this surgery, but I told one more friend....not sure how I feel about it. I posted some of my thoughts on my Sunday blog. Part of me wants to tell the world, but then part of me thinks I took the easy way out....especially when I know how hard it is to lose the traditional way.....and I think some people think this is cheating...???? Anyway, I'm happy to keep it to myself with only a few people knowing... Either way, it's nice to be back in Hilo, Hawaii again.....tried on some clothes I hadn't seen in a year; and have posted a photo like you see on TV on my site...I had fun 'shopping! Michigan- Mclaren HMP Insurance Question

I wanted to add information that I was given by the nurse advisor at HMP. They do require 6 months of documented weight loss; however, they may be willing to look at surrounding situations that create a problem for the patient. BMI of 40 or more without comorbidities, under 40 with comorbidities, and all of the other stuff we already know, psych evaluation, referral, letter of medical necessity, and so on. A very awesome thing, it is a 2 week approval process so when everything is ready it will not be a long wait! In my particular case, I showed required weight loss and kept it off before another health issue took over my life and the weight was gained over more than a year’s time. For now, again I am waiting to hear from the nurse advisor for my insurance to see if their approval board will take these extenuating circumstances and allow me to move forward! Either way, I am back to the wl and have 3 months into it so the wait won’t be too long.
  17. This statement or something like it,has been said by guest speakers in my 14 week class- and the facilitator has said it many times- (they did surgey on my gut not my head)??? have you heard this- LIVED this? can you explain it to me? I am not understanding it-yet.
  18. I used the nutrutionist at my surgeons office, went to my PCP and had my records where I checked in at the gym at least 3 times a week. Now keep in mind my check in at the gym was never submitted and I was approved by Aetna and have already had surgery.

Momma of twins having surgery in 2 weeks

Recovery is pretty quick as the surgery is a pretty simple procedure. The main thing is don't do any heavy lifting for I think 4 weeks post-op. This would include lifting your toddlers. Be sure to tell your surgeon you have small children so he/she can advise you about lifting. Good luck! You will not regret your decision.
  20. Lilbelly, Yes, I did loose most of my weight on liquids, pre-op and post-op liquids. I started mushies last Wed 5/09 but I am trying to only weigh once a week. I will know Wednesday night how I am doing on the mushies. I have my first fill scheduled for June 5th.
  21. Mine went better after a week a lot of cravings and headaches.... But after I weithed myself and I was down 7 pounds give me the energy to finish up this week. My surgery is on the 30th!

    going out of town

I went out of town a couple of weeks ago and brought mio drink flavoring. It helped if I wanted something other than water at a restaurant. What stage are you in? It might help to find a store at your destination that has protein drinks...I was only gone a couple of days and I really fell down on my protein for a couple days!
  23. How long does the process take from initial consultation to surgery date? It really depends on your insurance, your surgeon, and you. Could be anywhere from a couple of weeks to a year, but for most people it seems to be about 3 - 6 months. Did anyone feel that people in their environment judged them for having surgery vs 'trying to lose weight' the natural way? I've told just about everyone who has asked about my weight loss about my surgery. Only one person has said anything negative to my face. Other people may be saying things behind my back, or thinking negative, judgmental things. I really don't give a rat's patootie what anyone thinks about me or how I lose weight though. That may be one of the benefits of doing this as a not-young person (I am 49 now) -- my IDGAF bone has definitely gotten stronger through the years. It's a medical decision, I made it in consultation with my physicians, anyone who feels like they have the right to an opinion on my medical decisions can bite me. How long was the hospital stay? My surgeon's standard hospital stay is 2 nights. Others do 1 night, 3 nights, or on an outpatient basis, it varies a lot. How long does recovery take? Again, this is all over the map. We are all such individuals when it comes to healing, plus different surgical techniques may result in longer or shorter healing times, some people may have complications, others may have hiatal hernia repair or gall bladder removal done at the same time as the sleeve. I was off work for two weeks and pretty much exhausted for four weeks after surgery. I've seen posts from people who bounced back a lot sooner, and others who took longer. But to be clear, during the two weeks off work, I was tired, napping a lot, and in occasional pain, but not bedridden or unable to care for myself and my household. I just needed to be able to take things slow and rest a lot.
  24. Hey all...my surgery is August 13th. It's possible I may need to fly out of state for a week-long business trip 2- 2 1/2 weeks post-op. The business trip doesn't involve any physical work or anything, but I'm nervous about leaving town so soon after surgery. I'm worried about what stage I'll be at in my diet (pureed food or mushies I'd imagine?) and how I'll work around that while out of town, and also about being uncomfortable on the flight. What do you guys think? I have no idea how I'll be feeling or the kind of energy I'll have at that stage. I have to make a decision soon so travel arrangements can be made. Do you think it's reasonable to make a trip like this so soon after surgery?

    Business Trip 2 Weeks Post-Op

I haven't been sleeved yet, but I am in the same situation of needing to travel for work pretty soon after surgery. My surgeon said I should not get on a plane for 6 weeks if at all possible. Driving is ok but only if I stop every hour. You may want to ask your surgeon's office and see what they advise.
