    Developed Diabetes After Surgery

My sister had gastric bypass 25 years ago and she eats candy breads etc she is insulin dependent and has been about 23-24 years now. I was raw vegan for 6 months and lost 40 pounds before I decided to get the sleeve and I’m planning to go back vegan although probably cooked. I think since what you eat is limited I wouldn’t waste that space with breads because that would be to much carbs and raise anyones blood sugar I would think. Try to get in to your dietitian and an endocrinologist they both can help a ton
  2. I am going from a sleeve to a bypass December 7th due to a hiatal hernia and bile reflux I started my liquid diet today Sent from my SM-A015AZ using BariatricPal mobile app

    Drain

I had a drain. It was the bane of my existence because there is no medical tape that could secure tubing designed not to allow surgical tape to adhere to it. I tried them all. I finally threw caution to the wind and found the solution: Duct tape. Angels sang. By the time I went for my follow-op Doc had to get through layers of duct tape just to talk to me. Duct tape. I hear those angels sing every time I say it. If it doesn't move when it should: WD40. If it moves when it shouldn't: Duct tape. :angels singing: Most folks don't have a drain with their Gastric Bypass. But I recommend the duct tape for your surgical tape needs. Good luck, Tek

I will be having Gastric Bypass December 7th I had Gastric Sleeve 2 years ago. Did anyone have to wear a drain when you went home? Sent from my SM-A015AZ using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. My RNY-RNY revision is now scheduled for December 21. I am so ready! I just hope that it doesn't get postponed due to COVID. I was told that all of the hospitals in my area are full due to COVID patients, but the clinic is reevaluating the surgery schedule week by week.
  7. Everything has gone by so fast. I had my gastric bypass on Monday 11/29. I'm Finnish so I did my surgery in Finland. Everything went well and the nurses were amazing, the whole experience was loving and calm. I feel extremely grateful for that. On Tuesday I could go home after getting in my 1000 ml of liquids. I never felt nausea, pain or discomfort why drinking and I tried to walk as much as I could. Gas pain was very difficult Wednesday and Tuesday. It's slowly leaving now, Friday. I've taken pain meds every evening and sometimes during the day if I get pain, but I'm trying to manage with the little pain I have. I'm excited for what's to come, it feels like a huge life changing moment, which it of course is. I'm scared and anxious as well; what if I never can eat a piece of sushi again, my absolute favourite food? What if I can't travel and enjoy the food? Food is such a big part of our lives and has so much to do with our social life and culture. I know it's worth it, I know this surgery is for me and for my future, for my health. But it's still scary. That's why I love going on here and reading everything. It gives me so much comfort to know there's so many people all over the world going through a similar experience. I'm gonna start weighing myself after two weeks after surgery, giving myself time to heal and rest for now. Here are some stats that I can look back on in the future. HW: 308 lb (140 kg) Operation weight: 291 lb (132kg) GW: in-between 130-150 lb Sent from my KB2003 using BariatricPal mobile app
  8. I got my lapband in 2012 and got down to 206 from a high of 293. When I complained about my horrendous reflux the doctor took the fluid out of the band. The reflux eased up but I put on 50 pounds very quickly. I am in the process of qualifying for revision surgery. Federal BCBS requires the whole program again to qualify for the revision to bypass. In my case the revision is totally considered bariatric surgery.

    Any December 2021 bypass people?

December 27th here! Bypass and Hiatal Hernia repair. Nervous but excited!

SO much pain 2 days out

I had a large hiatal hernia repair with my bypass, and felt like I'd been hit by a truck that first week. So it can definitely knock you about! As others have said, walk as far as you can each day without overdoing it to alleviate the gas pain, and the surgery pain will improve. It took me about two weeks to not feel pain when breathing in.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

It seems I posted under the wrong thread since I have had gastric bypass 🤦🏻‍♀️ But it still is the same journey for all of us regardless of the kinda procedure we have had 😂 First 2 days, pain was bothersome but managed with Tylenol and resting. I have experienced resting for an hour or so helps a lot. So I follow that and only use 2 or 3 regular strength 325mg of Tylenol. I feel much better today (Day 3). So hoping by the end of the week, I'll be able to stroll without having to hold my stomach. Hope everyone is progressing well on your respective end. 🤗
  13. My revision was for Gerd/Esophagitis and unfortunately, I still had to do it. Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app
  14. So I was sleeved almost 7 years ago. I've had horrible GERD pretty much ever since. There has also been some weight regain. If my insurance covers the revision surgery, will I have to do the months of supervised weight loss, or would I skip that since it's medically necessary? I'm looking to research all options....I hate having to take pills for the reflux. I know it's a question for my dr or insurance company, just wanted to see everyone else's experience. Scared to do another surgery!!

    Considering revision

Unfortunately, I have moved since my surgery so I am no longer in touch with my original surgeon. I am waiting on a referral from my doctor for the revision at the moment. I don't know much about the DS in comparison to the bypass. I know a few people who have the RNY though. Thank you for your suggestions!
  16. So I have just had the surgery yesterday and I was prescribed to take Lansoprozole and docusate (Colace). Both of them are in capsule form. Is it alright to take the entire capsule right from day 2? Instruction doesn't mention anything specific on how to take it. I have taken them and they haven't bothered or hurt me. So wondering if it's safe to take them as it is in the capsule form? Please let me know if I am doing it wrong. Thank you.
  17. Hello. I’m new to this forum. Got a lapband in 2011. Overall it’s been successful. Starting weight was 255, I now weigh 198. My weight is stable. But…. I am now having a large amount of reflux and nighttime coughing. I’m worried about my esophagus and I am starting to consider revision surgery. But… my BMI is now 33. Which is great, except I’m discovering that is too low to qualify for revision surgery through insurance. But if I get the lapband taken out without any other help, the weight will not stay off. And I’d much prefer to just have one surgery instead of two. I’m only about 6 lbs under my insurance’s minimum BMI of 35. What do people do in this case? Wear ankle weights to the doctor? Just try to gain the 6lbs through milkshakes? Any advice appreciated.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Oops this is a gastric bypass post. Sorry still a new member…

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Hi I'm 8 weeks gastric bypass on Wednesday. 34lb at moment but my surgeon and team say slow and sure as I was like wow people loose far more faster but I started at 266lb. I stalled at some point but I take a picture every month on the first and the difference is showing. My mobility is so much better and I can now buy clothes in normal shops and stopping to hide under my baggies. Your doing great keep up the fantastic work Xxx
  20. If you have GERD now, then you should opt for a gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y, always abbreviated RNY here). It's literally the solution for GERD and sometimes when vertical gastric sleeve (VSG) patients get GERD post-op, they revise the surgery to RNY. So let me ask you this: what's worse for your health? Having to monitor your blood levels of vitamins and supplement, or being obese and developing comorbidities? You'll find a LOT of people think that surgery is somehow a way of "cheating". Don't listen to those idiots, who've never looked into it.
  21. I had gastric bypass surgery in July 2021 and am starting to regret it. I have been really sick unable to eat or drink since. I'm so weak I can barley get out of bed most days. I'm concerned about loosening my job because of it as well. I just had a procedure done about a week ago to widen the pouch the doc called it. It was supposed to help I guess it has in a way I can finally eat about 8 blueberries a day or i pick at a banana through the day, I've also been able to down about half a drinkable yogurt. But I'm still getting sick . Alot of foods or even smells make me gag. Water tastes horrible to me for some reason. I started to drink Gatorade it has helped with some fluid intake. I don't want to be a downer for others but does anyone know if this will get better.

    GERD after nearly 3 years!!

GERD is a possible complication of VSG, but like others have said, there could be something else causing it, too - like an ulcer or hiatal hernia. If it's GERD, it can usually be managed medically. In severe cases, converting a bypass will often cure it.
  23. Why do you attribute the GERD to the surgery? Bypass is actually a treatment for GERD.
  24. One thing I can tell you from my very experience is, you can have 20 physicians in a room and still won't find 2 to agree on anything. So evidence shows that to decrease the size of the liver, there is no consensus on how long the diet should go on for. With bypass, given they have to access the gastro-esophageal junction which the left lobe of the liver can obscure, this will definitely warrant a diet of longer duration. In the paper I read, generally the longer the diet the more shrinkage, however... A greater decrease in size was noted with higher protein diets. Also you risk being in a catabolic state (this is not good for healing) if you are on these low calorie liquid diets for too long. All this to say, some surgeons change their practices to reflect the evidence. Some were just trained a certain way and stuck with it. Im on a week long diet and my BMI is 41
  25. I'm a fan of Matthew Weiner, MD, and his website & videos. I've been following A Pound of Cure philosophy since I began going to my bariatric clinic. I've lost over 50 lbs pre-op. I think his nutritional advice is better than my clinic's. For example, my clinic didn't want me to eat fruit! Can you imagine 8 months without fruit? I'm not totally following his food plan, but am inching my way through the the stations. My vegan friend has shared some of her favorite recipes so many of my meals are animal protein-free. I've cut out sugar, flour, rice, potatoes, pasta, and processed foods. I'm still dependent upon artificial sweeteners, but once I've graduated from protein drinks I'm going to work harder on that. My RNY to RNY revision is just three weeks away now!
