What I Wish I Had Known Before Banding
Wheetsin replied to Ducker's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wish I had known... ...how much it hurts when something is stuck. "Productive burp" doesn't really sound like something that can be downright agonizing at times. ...that things getting stuck, and the ensuing pain, don't just happen when you make a mistake. Sometimes it really isout of your control. ...how inconsistent restriction can be. And that it would probably change over time. Multiple times. ...then the rates for complications now. ...I would be allergic to the leather recliner I bought to sleep in post-op. ...my surgeon was going to transfer primary patient care to a PA and stop seeing all but the most dire complications personally. Etc. -
I am soooooo scared of the pre-op diet( actually kinda more than the actual surgery itself).i'm so scared i won't be able to fight my hunger for a week and i might slip up one day and eat something i shouldn't eat and then i end of having complications cause of my uncontrolable appetite!!! i'm haveing my surgery the end of october i kinda wanna test drive the pre op diet and see if i can handel it.

Hello, I wanted to tell everyone out there that the post that you guys write have been inspirational. I had my sleeve done 2 days ago. I feel great. I have no complications or problems. I had it hear in Tijuana Mexico. The people here have been so helpful and friendly. The hotel that i am staying at is beautiful. Right now this choice i chose to make is a good one. I will do consistent updates. I will be going home very soon. I fell good right now. Thanks to everyone for the posts of their journeys.

Holy Cow! No pills for 6 weeks? I get that doctors all put a different spin on things but that seems next to impossible to me! LOL I can't imagine that all of my meds are available in a liquid form. I could see there being a few meds that truly must be taken in another form for awhile, but ALL pills seems excessive. I would be really interested to know the dr's reasoning behind that. If it is a personal preference for him/her or have they seen a large number of issues/complications as a result of pill swallowing. Interesting stuff!

Well, I think you're doing great. It is easy to become obsessed about calories/fat grams, etc, especially with the aid of the band to help us along. I'm getting an X-ray done tomorrow for my problem. The nurse said if there's a slip it usually means surgery. I'm thinking if I need surgery again I'm just going to take it out. I've been thinking lately about all the things I don't like about the band - for me personally - and that if I ever did have a complication I'd just get it taken out. I'm concerned about not getting enough nutrition (I hardly eat anything), I never want to go on holidays anymore because I'm terrified of getting food poisoning and the accompanying slip that goes with it (or even just the flu), I am still concerned about having a foreign body inside of me and the health concerns that go along with that. But we'll see what tomorrow brings. Maybe it's not a slip and I'm just too tight ...

And so the testing begins.....
abbygirl replied to abbygirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine was due to a pre-existing gastric reflux issue. I think they only do it to ensure no complications and to see if there is something else that may be causing it like a hiatus hernia. My girlfriend had the sleeve last year and they fixed hers while they were doing it.....two for the price of one! -
Bandages for how long?
bhartwig replied to hdd55146's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had Only steri strips, which came off in about a week. No staples, no bruising. Amazed at how tiny the incisions were. Largest one is in my belly button, so not visible. That was the only one that was a little sore. But was by no means what I had expected. So impressed with my surgeons work. No regrets. Sleeved Dec 9. Down 22lbs and I feel great. Soooo thankful to have been free from any complications! -
Worst decision of my life - removed & still handicapped & chronic pain
The Icy One replied to Megdal's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Posts that relate difficulties and complications are educational and helpful, especially to those of us in the pre band stage. We need all of the facts, all of the information so that we can make fully informed decisions. However, posts that make blanket statements like, the Lap Band sucked for me, so it will suck for everyone! are counterproductive. Posts like that are fear mongering and to me, they feel a bit like a massive case of sour grapes. As if those who have not been successful, for whatever reason with a band don't want others to be successful with a band. It's like anything else, YMMV. -
Worst decision of my life - removed & still handicapped & chronic pain
NaNa replied to Megdal's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thanks for sharing your story, I hope and pray that you will eventually heal and will be able to resume your normal life. The band has caused some horrible complications in many people from what I've read on various message boards over the years and some have permanent damage to their body. However, everyone does not suffer from horrible complications and the band has saved their lives from other life threatening issues from being obese. I for one, am very grateful for my lap band, and I've had two, and both have been good to me, there are no perfect weight loss surgeries, things happen sometimes without fault of our own, but those are risks we take when getting any type of elected weight loss surgery. -

Lap band vs sleeve...help
Arabesque replied to Blyss's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
From all I’ve read & heard, lap band is not very popular today & the number of lap band surgeries have decreased quite dramatically. Gastric sleeve is much more popular & common with fewer side effects & complications. But you have a few surgical options. Your health & medical conditions will influence which surgery is most suitable for you & your lifestyle. For example if you already suffer from reflux, you would not be a suitable candidate for a sleeve. Before I made my choice, I did a lot of reading & sat with my surgeon who went through the pros & cons of each surgery. He then made his recommendation based upon my medical history which matched my leanings towards the sleeve. I’m very happy with our decision. Good luck with your journey & whichever surgery you choose. -
Penni, I can not put into words how much my heart aches for you and DeLarla. For you two and the other struggling Bandsters and DeBanded Bandsters (because no matter the status of your band, you're Bandsters for life) you have been confronted with issues and responsibilities that no patient deserves. I go out of my way to move forward and not move backward in my life but it ain't always easy. Complication sucks and the attitude of some of the people here who are basically saying "suck it up" just devastated me. I only hope and pray they never walk a mile in the shoes of someone who has been let down or worse, injured by their band journey. But I hope that we can find some sense of brotherhood and sisterhood with Penni and the others who had fought the Band fight? Does the current status of the Band (whether it's currently implanted, currently removed, currently about to be revised or currently sitting still in a box in a hospital warehouse) make a difference on how we receive each others' comments? All those who sit smugly saying "oh if this happens, I'll do this" are just speculating on how they HOPE they will react. The reality may be and probably would be different. Like any technology or procedure, the LapBand will continue to improve as will the techniques used with the LapBand. But realize that those who come along later critising those who are struggling will hopefully be spared an unfortunate lesson in karma. A bit of tolerance and understanding goes a long way. Hopefully all of us will realize we may have more in common with our DeBanded Bandsters than some think. As is said, "There by the grace of God, go I." Happy Band Journeys and DeBanded Bandster Journeys to all, New Sho

Hi, I'm new here. I decided to be banded after a life of being heavy. I'm at a BMI of 30 now. Any other Canadians here? I'll be paying about $18K for it and it's not covered by insurance I think. Did anyone have it done elsewhere and are happy with the results. I see ads for bands being installed for $4K... Not sure which country this is done in My DH is freaking out and is scared that there may be really bad complications.

I take Protonix RX for 6 months now. this is a new symptom....long history of complications. I am asymptomatic which is good and not at risk for esophogeal issues at this point. not eating - tube feeding, which my body is handling just fine. who knows?? it is just yucky.....(10# to go, but i might change it from 140 to 135 when i get healthy.)

I was sleeved at Mexico Bariatric Center, Dr Christian Rodreguez Lopez in Tijuana. It was a near perfect experience. I also have heard that weight loss can be affected by the surgeon. If I remember right it was determined by how close to the sphincter they get and how well they shape the stomach. Only time will tell for me. I am almost 6 weeks post op and down 24 pounds. No complications. I went to Mexico because there was no insurance interference and of course in the USA I did not qualify due to not being obese enough or having other pre-existing conditions. Good luck in your decision.

Demographics - Opinions - Weighing Options (no pun intended)
Berry78 replied to P-Diddy's topic in The Guys’ Room
I also want to clarify something. The "gamble" everyone talks about isn't about weight loss (not really). The gamble is whether you experience complications from the surgery. From your history, I'll agree that you are in an excellent position to lose 60-70% of your excess weight with moderate effort. With hard work, you'll likely get to a normal BMI. Your doctor is full of "you know what", saying that because you are starting heavy, that you won't lose as much. I do suspect what she MEANT was, that if you had started at a lower weight, that you would be more likely to get to 165lbs, but because you started heavier, that your end point will be...say... 235lbs .. so "more loss" really just means "a lower scale #" to her. (Hope that makes sense). From what I've seen on the boards, because you are male, you will lose very quickly (likely 15-20lbs per month for the first 4-6 months) women lose slower.. usually closer to 10lbs a month. Everyone slows down after the first 6 months, but how slow depends on you. In a year, I expect you'll have lost 150lbs with moderate work. (All these #s are assuming you get the sleeve). But the weight loss with the sleeve can continue for an additional 6 months or so... so you don't have to be too close to goal in a year (like you would after a bypass). The concept of "calories in vs. calories out" is pretty much hogwash during the losing phase. The scale in no way reflects what you are or aren't eating. This is a huge part of the challenge of post op weight loss. Many times we aren't losing weight, because we aren't eating enough. True story! So take the concepts of BMR, exercising for weight loss, etc.. and tuck them away, because it isn't so cut and dried right after surgery. They may apply during maintenance. -
BAD start to the liquid diet, and I don't feel I can tell my doc
shoegirlia replied to crackedpepper's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
(Sorry but reading this and a couple other postings makes me want to give a reality check )You are asking someone to cut you open and install a foreign object around one of your major organs. Call me crazy but this is major surgery!!!! People have died from having a lap band put in. Why would you want to do anything to risk a bad outcome? You should follow whatever your doctor tells you to do to the T. No excuses. My doctor scared me enough for me to respect the procedure and his requests. The only thing cheating does is increase your risk of complications. They don't give you restrictions just to be evil- they want you to have a good outcome. Yes every doctor is different but follow what YOUR doctor says as s/he is the one cutting you open. If you can't/don't want to follow instructions, you should postpone the surgery and re-evaluate why you wanted to get it done in the first place. I have been on only liquids for a month and just switched to mush foods a couple days ago and I can honestly say I haven't cheated once even with the holidays. Yes- it sucks and that doesn't make me perfect, it makes me dedicated to doing my part to ensure I limit my risk for complications as much as possible. -
Congratulations! Glad you didn't have any complications or issues and that you're doing well.

Hi everyone, I had RNY 7 weeks ago today at UCSF here in northern California. My husband and I live on the Mendocino Coast and are both educators. I am an elementary school (k-2) librarian and he is a high school government/history teacher. At 28 I was diagnosed with diabetes and then at 29 I was diagnosed with kidney cancer. I had a successful surgery where they removed my entire left kidney along with the gigantic cancerous tumor that was attached to it! Because of the diabetes and history of kidney cancer my doctors recommended the RNY. So now, at the age of 31, I am on the road to a healthy life! I have been very lucky so far, no complications and I have had no problems getting my liquids and protein in everyday. It is amazing how much your posts have helped me during this process so far. It is so comforting to hear stories that are so similar to my own experiences. I look forward to getting to know all of you and sharing our journeys together!

Torn between sleeve and rny. . .anyone been here?
Bubbaloo10 replied to Chaych's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
As a Sleeve veteran, I am 1 1/2 years out. My wife had the RNY in 2003. She lost 100 lbs over a year and gained back about 15 lbs of it until I had my surgery in April 2012. I lost 102 lbs in 6 months to the day before I started to taper off. After one year of leveling off (my choice) I have gained 3-5 lbs, depending on which day I step on the scale (and I do every morning). My wife had alot of eating difficulties for a good couple years after her surgery, particularly with dumping syndrome. I got out of the hospital the day after my surgery and took a walk around the block that night, The next morning I started walking on the treadmill for 20 minutes at 2mph. As I began to gain strenght over the next few weeks, I would up the time and/or speed gradually until I reached 4mph for one hour. Then I would go 4mph for one hour at varied elevation until I got to 6% grade. Worth mentioning, most people have at least some difficulties like nausea, diarhea, vomiting, etc. for up to a month after surgery. Most will tell you this happened to them. I did not have any difficutlies like this at all. I felt great and continue to feel great. When I first went to my Dr. I was looking for an RNY. He suggested I go with the sleeve instead, as it had fewer complications and I did not have any co-morbidities like diabetes, high blood pressure or hear trouble. He said if I had such co-morbidities he would recommend the RNY. I took his advice and am so glad I did. I think the secret for me was to hold to 1000 net calories a day after exercise. When I started maintenance, I adjusted up to 1300 net calories. I get at least 70 grams of protein per day. I'm on the treadmill at least 5-6 days a week and burn anywhere between 640 to 780 calories, so you can see, I can eat almost anything I want as long as I don't get stupid. Good luck with whatever you choose. -
Has anyone had to stop takig their anti-dep/anixert meds....
Groovinchikin replied to newme31's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not a nurse or Dr., but I took my Paxil before, the day of, and after my surgery with absolutely no complications. When you are on liquids your surgeon may tell you to crush your pill, but that's really the only change I was asked to make. -
Just decided to get the sleeve instead of the band...and SO happy....I think :)
