    Oh Hi O is ....

Hi I'm new just banded feb.19/08. I am from canada and very interested in this site. In my province it isn't covered and bypass isn't done here but will pay for you to go to another province. The travel and time away from my kids wasn't worth it. Thiis is the safer and I like to be near my family and Doctor,so I'm in debt for a couple of years. But feel we made the right decision.

    Sleeve to Bypass

I had RNY gastric bypass surgery over 3 years ago and I consider it to be one of the best decisions I ever made.
  3. I know regular gastric bypass usually cures GERD, but I don't know about mini-bypass. It might (usually, anyway), I just don't know enough about that surgery to know one way or the other. I'd let your clinic know what's going on. Hopefully it's just a flare-up and bumping up for PPI for a while might help - but ask them before doing anything (I'm not a medical person...)

    Help

Hi Sarie. That's wonderful on your weight loss. You're doing great. I wasn't banded, but rather I had gastric bypass. I experienced the "stopping when I felt full" vs "stopping when I was satisfied". I too hurt and was beating myself up for not stopping when I knew I should. I found that the days where I didn't feel satisfied (and this is just me) I found an emotional trigger. Something happened to me and I ate beyond where I should have because I wanted to get rid of the feelings (I didn't figure it out until after I ate - I had to take the time to think back and figure out what happened.) It has taken me awhile to be able to see my triggers and be able to stop myself from eating to much. I had to be mindful and ask myself: "Diane, why are you eating? Are you truly hungry or what is going on?" I don't know if this has helped you or not, but I hope it does. Keep your chin up. You haven't failed, you just hit a bump in the road.
  5. I am in the process of ordering my Vitamins so I have them all here when I get home from surgery. There are so many options!! For those of you who have already had bypass, did you have trouble with any of the chewables? I think that would be easiest for me, but there are so many different ones I have to take that I just wonder if it will be hard to manage. Some of my options come in a powder to be dissolved, but I don't know if it is worth the trouble. I would love to hear your stories and also know what brands you prefer for each type. My dr wants me to take two multis, 1 Calcium citrate with D, 18 mg Iron, and sublingual B12. Thanks!
  6. Hi. This a Lap Band site so most of us have no experience with gastric bypass. You can go to Obesityhelp.com and they have forums specifically for bypass surgery. From all that I've read you will lose weight more quickly with the bypass. That being said, you have to realize that you commit to a totally new lifestyle whichever surgery you have. I weighed well over 300 lbs before I was banded and 6 months later I've lost 50 lbs and anm still losing. Lap Band is a much less invasive form of surgery but I feel that I have to work at this every day and it's something that I spent a lot of time preparing to do. Best of luck on whichever way you go. Losing weight will make a big difference in your quality of life.
  7. Doubts are normal. There is a lot to consider. Every single one of the doctors I've been seeing over the past year for various maladies have all said the same thing...WLS is what you should consider. I listened to them and got things in motion. This time next month should find me healing up from my bypass and losing at a great pace. Positive outlook will be needed to get through the no fun liquid diet I'm starting tomorrow. You'll do great. Lots of great advisors on here

    Awful complications

So sorry you have not been feeling well. Everyone's body responds differently to this procedure. I was the exception to the rule in many regards. No ansaid usage, chewed until I was tired of chewing, drank constantly, either appropriate shakes for the benefit of the protein as well as getting the liqueds in. Side note: Premier shakes are not the type of shake that by-pass patients should be using. They are not the right kind of protein, as they are slow digesting shakes not Whey protein isolate. In other words when you drink them you are not getting the benefit of the 30 gram of protein. As far as ulcer at the staple site this is a very common result of the surgery and mine were quite severe where I was also throwing up blood. 3 EGD's later and months of protonix and Carafate with no benefit to the ulcers as well as non stop weight loss led to Gastric Bypass reversal.

    Help!

Regarding exercise...whether you have the band or bypass, exercise should be incorporated into your lifestyle. You can do other things besides walk...swim, bike (recumbant) yoga, etc. Personally, I thought the slower weightloss was better for me. I'm almost a year into this and down 53 pounds. It came off fast at first and then slowed. I need another fill but am waiting until after the holidays just so I won't have problems like getting stuck, etc. My weightloss has slowed mostly due to lack of exercise and not always eating properly. Good luck with whichever you decide.

    Fears

I have that fear, it's my second biggest fear (first being surgical complications). Also, of everyone I've known to have bypass personally, none have lost significant weight. I understand ita how you work it that determines success. And I don't know these people so intimately that I could say if it's their fault or the surgery.... How I cope... I go in my hole and do me. I focus on what the doc/nut set for me and forget everyone else's progress, comments and suggestions. I work based on the truths I know about what's good for me and my body.
  13. Hello. My first doctor visit and education class is next week. I expect my gastric bypass surgery to be six months from now. I did a good amount of research before making my decision, and I am eager to start my journey. I know I will have questions answered next week, but am eager for answers now. My biggest fear is my BMI is close to being too low, however, I have many weight related health issue (D2, HBP, and High cholesterol). I am hoping to be able to diet a bit before surgery. Anyone in a similar situation?

    Hello from Boston!

Hello I work in Boston and was banded at Beth Israel Hospital on 3/17/08. I enjoyed all the staff there and very helpful. I am glad I started the process in November 2007, and looking forward to new me. Welcome - I love the website also! Two weeks before my surgery date I was given a diet to follow mostly liquids during the day with one meal in the evening. I was told by losing weight before surgery it will make your liver smaller and lighter to lift during surgery and it helps the surgeons. Also, I had to walk 30 minutes a day or some sort of exercise. I really feel that it helped when after surgery you are on liquids for another three to four weeks. Good luck!

    having second thought....

Well, I made my decision after a lot of reading and soul searching. I decided to do the bypass. I didn't make this decision because of my online friends. I know it's more drastic than the band, but I really think that I'll be more successful with it. I did research on the sleeve, but my insurance doesn't cover it, so that's a closed door. Thanks for all of your oppinions and advice, I do appreciate it very much! Sincerely, Susi

    having second thought....

I have only been banded 11 weeks. I have already lost 41 pounds and am thrilled with the results. I have had no negative side effects and do not feel any restriction yet. I have had to work very hard to get these results and basically am doing it on my own at this point but I have the psychological benefit of knowing that if I just stick with it, I will get restriction in the future and will have the assistance I need to maintain the weight loss. The decision on what type of surgery to get is a very personal one and I believe there are advantages and disadvantages to both. What it came down to for me was the risks. I had a surgeon tell me that the gastric bypass surgery was no more dangerous than an appendectomy. My response to him was that I did not know anyone who had died from an appendectomy, but I personally know or know of five different people who have died post gastric bypass. I thought about the gastric bypass for five years before I finally told my surgeon, I could not get past the fear. I wish I would have known about lapband five years ago and would not have wasted those five years. Good luck to you with your decision. Whichever you choose, give it your all.
  17. I would say I am new here but I am actually not, when I had my band placed 2.5 years ago I was a member but I could not remember my username so this is my new profile. Something horrible happened, I was in an auto accident on Nov 01 and I suffered blunt trauma to my chest and abdomin. Immediately after the accident I was vomiting and had pain. Long story short after 6 weeks of dealing with Workmans Comp (I was driving on the job, running an errand) I finally got to see the right doctor and all the correct tests were done and not only did my band slip but I also have a hiatial hernia! I am just waiting on approval for surgery to fix this and I was left with several options with Dr. Joseph Naim... 1. Remove the band (NOT!) 2. Replace the band 3. Gastric Sleeve 4. Gastric Bypass Although the band has been good to me I am afraid of this happening again as this is a very miserable experience. I am leaning toward the sleeve...any thoughts? Dawn

    having second thought....

Thanks for all of your advice and encouragement. I do appreciate it very much, but (I'm not trying to be rude, really!) the last thing I need now is to hear/read about horror stories. I have read/heard many; and it's not a help to me at all. Please don't take me wrong if you told me about something that happened to someone else. I know that you are just trying to help. I am still wavering, one day going for the band, the next for the bypass. I am trying to be calm about this, and be reasonable about it, instead of stressing myself about it. I made an appointment with my surgeon to dicuss it with him, we'll see what he suggests. He himself has the band, so I know that he'll be more in support for it, than the bypass. But hopefully he'll also listen to my concerns, and respect my decision either way I go. I am doing a lot of researching and reading about both proceduree, and I feel that I have a good handle on the pros and cons. Now it just comes down to me. I know that my online WLS friends will also support me in whatever decision I make. I will post my decision when i am feeling confident about it. As for now, I thank you all for letting me vent here. It's good to have a place where I feel I can do it, without being judged. Sincerely, Susi

    A Little Discouraged....

Very good advice and wise words here. I started with over 200 pounds to lose. I originally was going to Gastric Bypass and at the last minute canceled. Logically I just couldn't rationalize cutting up and permanently changing a perfectly healthy organ without at least trying something less drastic first. So, I got the band. So far I've lost 92 pounds in just under 5 months. It's work, I've had to change my eating habits completely as well as learn how to eat with the band. But I have zero regrets and would recommend it to anyone willing to do the work necessary for success with the band.

    Star Jones....leaving "the view"

Star Jones was on Larry King for the whole hour tonight. He had talked to Barbara Walters and had statements from ABC. Star said that in her book she says that she had a medical intervention by her doctors, because of several conditions that were getting life-threatening. Though she never used the term "gastric bypass" or another form of WLS, she says that "surgery" is understood. She just wanted her privacy in the matter. AND she thinks it was a mistake not being more open about the weight loss surgery. ABC said they told Bill (show producer) and Barbara Walters in November 2005, that they wanted Star to go ASAP. Barbara got them to hold off, because it was the holiday season, and Star had a book coming out. Finally, in April, Barbara and Bill agreed that it was time. But Star learned the news that she was being dropped from her agent...not Bill or Barbara. The wedding situation was a little unclear. She had sponsors, but she said the View had her doing wedding segments. ABC was upset that she gave exclusive rights to the wedding photos to People and did not allow the View to show wedding photos. Star said that People didn't pay for the pictures.(..that doesn't ring true.) She did not explain why the photos were not shown on the View. She says she loves the ladies and feels that they are still her friends. However, Barbara told Larry that her own relationship with Star is torn beyond repair. (Honey, that bridge is burned). Star says she has a TV project in the works, but didn't describe it. I do believe that ended her 15 minutes this week.
  21. I was banded November 29, 2010 and have lost about 50 pounds in the 13 weeks since being banded. So far some of my NSV are that I can cross my legs at the knee for the first time in awhile. I have knee socks to wear with boots, that I can actually wear up to my knees. I no longer have to fold them halfway down! I have one size of jeans left in my multi sizes closet before I have to buy new clothes. My seat belt fits so much better, and my whole butt fits on the chairs at my school! These are completely silly little things you don't think of not being able to do until you can do them again, and I feel great What are some of the silly things you forgot about until you were able to do them again?

Was your band placed too high?

agbardoe: When I had an upper GI after the endoscopy, my surgeon called me in that day for a slight unfill. I have felt much better. but as of today, I am changing doctors to a more experienced surgeon from a hospital of excellence.I went to see him for a second opinion first - before I decided to change. I don't believe my old doctor had the experience to deal with problems and complications. When you say the band hasn't been working for you - in what way? What kind of pain? From eating? Do you have reflux or heartburn? What does your doctor say about this? Have you had a recent upper GI? What caused you to gain 20 lbs? Anyway, before you make any changes - get answers to all your questions and concerns. If your insurance paid for the band you might need to be persistent to get a bypass if it is found that you have a severe complication from the band. Good luck.
  23. After months of contemplation, I went to my primary doctor to begin my supervised weight loss visits. I attended a seminar with the bariatric surgeon back in November and scheduled my intake appointment in January. However, due to insurance rollover, I would have to pay over $800 that first visit since I hadn't met my deductibles yet. The office gave me the go ahead to begin my doctor visits while I wait to get my deductible met (one test - I can't remember the name of it just yet - was normally $30 or so dollars with my insurance but I was having to pay $400!) I had all my tests ran today and my doctor literally looked at me and said, "You are so healthy minus your weight. Your cholesterol, sugar levels, blood pressure - everything is normal. It really doesn't make sense since your BMI is so high." He put me on a diet pill of sorts because he's very anti-weight loss surgery for two weeks. I'm interested to see how it works. Like most, I have yo yo dieted my entire life, losing over 40 pounds in the last year by pure "clean" eating and exercising. Due to job changing, stress, lack of routine and motivation, I gained it all back. I just told my entire life story for one question - any tips on a pre-op diet? Are most of you just paleo/clean eating?

    New!

Here I am, celebrated 45 years of marriage to my high school sweetheart on Saturday. Plan to retire December 31. Have fought weight all my life. Lowest weight 106 and highest 254. I am only 5 ft 2 in. Well, I am going to take the leap with Bariatric bypass as I have tried all other plans. I am 67 and looking to start my life over again with a new outlook on life. If I can, we all can. In God all things are possible[emoji33][emoji120]
