What foods do you have to avoid with the Lapband?
lbugher replied to flgirl23's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
The lap band prevents me from eating healthy foods like fruits, veggies, and lean proteins. It does NOTHING to stop me from eating slider foods, though, so I've actually gained weight with the lap band. I regret not doing bypass in the first place but I thought the lap band would be a safer choice since nothing was cut or removed. I was wrong. People have complications/issues with the band WAY more than with any other WLS, and far less success. I know some folks on here have had success with it but they're in the minority. Most doctors aren't even doing lap bands anymore. My doctor said he takes out way more bands now than ever before because they were popular 10 years ago but are failing. I'm converting to bypass soon... can't wait to get my surgery date! -
Treated Differently After Your Surgery?
James Marusek replied to tearsofapache's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I do not detect that I am treated any differently after my weight-loss from RNY gastric bypass surgery three years ago. For some people who haven't seen me since surgery, they sometimes fail to recognize me. Prior to surgery, like many others, due to my obesity, I was somewhat invisible. But now I am visible. Sometimes when I am in a store shopping and the person waiting on me is on the heavy side (and therefore somewhat invisible), I look at their name tag and greet them by name. They look up and are caught off-guard and astonished and grateful that someone took the time to notice. -
Fkn up Already - 1 week post op
evilpixie20 replied to FknUpAlready's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm in the US and it was crazy hard to get approved from the dr. I had to meet all criteria and get approved from psych etc. I'm sure not all dr's are legit and I know a lot of Americans go to Mexico to bypass all the necessary work and have it done. Not a great idea. -
Did anyone start with a low BMI? If so, I am curious how your weight loss is going.

Help! Possibly doing DS rather than Sleeve
Threetimesacharm replied to Adam Kramer's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Yeah ... no. There's absolutely no research to base that categorical statement on. None. Yeah! I personally have had the sleeve and the gastric bypass so I speak from experience! I find that I have very different restriction and feelings towards food. Personally as I said with the sleeve it has less restriction from fats and sugars, this is well known as the GB does. With the sleeve I also could eat more food much sooner than I can now(I had a 36F)Personally I find this to be more effective to keeping weight off. -
Will I ever be normal again!?
Briswife15 replied to Mrs. Hayes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What issues are you having with food? Nausea, vomiting? Its still early in your journey. If it makes you feel any better I'm 7 weeks post RNY gastric bypass and still on protein shakes only! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Struggling to keep anything down
MamaOnlyHasTwoHands posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had gastric bypass on Monday. Everything went well, I was able to come home on Wednesday. Thursday, I started having uncontrollable bowel movements. Basically every sip of fluid or protein drink just went right through me. Called the hospital and got a script for some meds because they said basically the antibiotics they gave me in the hospital had killed the good bacteria in my gut too. Friday morning went into the surgeon’s office and they said everything looked good and just to continue the meds they called in (I also added some probiotics to help). This evening (Friday), I started throwing up as well. Only thing I’ve had in over 24 hours is watered down apple juice. Talked to my surgeon tonight and he said to try lukewarm water, and if not to come into the hospital tomorrow. I’m taking zofran and Reglan for nausea. Anybody have any tips on what/how to get more fluid to stay down while the other med does its job? Or an idea of sustenance cause I’ve only had a few sips of protein since Monday, and I’m feeling a little weak? -
I'm curious....
Northwest_Nance replied to Annie0341's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For awhile, I had a very hard time deciding between the two. Before I really did my research, I wanted bypass surgery and I wasn't even considering the lapband. I thought of the band as a step-sister of bypass. But then I started diving into the research. I went to seminars and support group meetings, read every medical column and on-line post-surgery blog I could find, watched You Tube surgery diaries, and watched the surgery being performed on You Tube. The more I learned about gastric bypass, the more I started thinking of it as drastic bypass. Taking healthy organs and cutting them an re-routing things didn't seem right. The life-long malabsorbtion issues concerned me also. All in all, the risks seemed overwhelming to me. I kept telling myself that lots of people have very successful bypass surgery, which I know is true. But I couldn't get rid of my underlying anxiety about it. Still, I spent several weeks changing my mind every 30 minutes, it seemed..... bypass vs. lapband. I was driving myself crazy. In the end, the decision was sort of made for me. I was self-pay, and bypass was really more than I could afford to spend. Also, I knew that if I had any surgical complications, treatment for those would come out of my pocket too.... so not only was lap band less expensive, but the risk of complications was lower. I was relieved to have the decision made for me that way. -
I used to vomit almost daily with my lapband. I've only vomited once in the last 7 mths since my revision. I've actually tried to vomit (ate 1 bite too much and it caused much pain) but it's just not as easily done as when I was banded. I used to just bend over and my food would come up. Now I have to stick my toothbursh down my throat and nothing will come up. I guess thats good. I was becoming an unwitting bulimic while banded for almost 4 yrs. I think thats how I lost all of my weight. Now I hafta think about what I put into my tummy, as I can't press the reject button anymore.

Not losing weight and having problems now...HELP
coloradobanding replied to Imawretch's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My SIL had gastric bypass and her doctor told her to lose as much weight as she could the first year because it would slow down after that. Perhaps that's where you got that information. Having the lap band is totally different. My doctor told me it would likely take 2-3 years to get the same results as patients of the bypass, which is fine by me. As long as it comes off and I'm not gaining I'm happy. I think you've done great losing the weight so far! Keep up the good work! -
Band To Sleeve. Is It All It's Cracked Up To Be?
Gilly replied to kate33's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my Realize band surgery June 2009. Dr Rodriguez did my revision at Star Medica on 4/27/12. I had a wonderful experience with Dr Rod and his staff. I am just a month out so I haven't been really adventurous yet. However, whatever I eat, it sits comfortably in my stomach, not my throat! I haven't yet slimed or thrown up. So far, I haven't had any acid reflux issues. I didn't really notice but I was eating a lot of soft foods, Soups and sliders with the band. If I had a lunch or dinner date, I would have to scope out the menu in advance just to make sure there was something that I could eat that I wouldn't get stuck on. With the sleeve, it's not an issue. I am adding in veggies and salads back into my diet. Although, I haven't tried any fruits yet. But my goal is to focus on getting to my goal weight before I start adding in more fruits. -
Full with band vs full with sleeve.
Bndtoslv replied to Bndtoslv's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Me too! I'm down about 17lbs from my 2 day clear liquid diet. I can't help but worrying though since it has been so easy compared to the band. I keep wondering if I'll have adequate restriction as a revision patient. What does restriction feel like to you? I feel restriction finally...with sleeve. I never did with the band. This was the best decision ever! You may be worried because this feeling is all new...the band never did the job...like sleeve. You will have true restriction when u move to real foods...believe me! I can eat a couple ounces at a time...then I'm full abd I'm never hungry between my meals! That's helpful. Right now I can eat 3-4 oz of puréed and feel satisfied and full for long periods of time. In fact I don't really ever feel hungry I'm just wondering what the actual restriction feels like! Like what if I ate 5 ozs?! Guessing I don't want to find out but with the band we know what would happen -
Good going, TravelGirl! :clap2: I have not dared adjust the incline yet! Maybe when it no longer takes me 45 min to do a mile, I'll start raising the platform! BabyGrl, I looked further into that race site. There's an 8K about 1-1/2 hours from here in late September. I can't imagine doing it...I really cannot. But you've got me at least thinking......... A real GOAL with the exercise, an end result which you otherwise don't GET from exercise (especially on a treadmill) might be something. I shudder to at the thought! But maybe...maybe... My clinic offers a monthly Lap-Band support group, as well as a Bypass group. Perhaps I will research the "whats" of the Sept 8K and mention it at the next meeting. (Or the one after that -- not sure how committed I can get myself to be in a week & a half!! :heh:)

Gastric Sleeve or Gastric Bypass?
Anne Collura replied to SillySavy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello there!! I will be having my 3rd wls on Nov 1. I started with the gastric band, but because of "band slippage" I had to have it removed, and converted to a gastric sleeve. After 5 years, I am now having problems with severe GERD. I will now have to have my sleeve converted to a gastric bypass because of it........So my opinion would be go straight to a gastric bypass... -
Lapband to bypass waiting on insurance blah
Matt Z replied to swimmer0302's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Pretty much the same story here. Banded in 2011, lost 70 lbs, various issues with foods, etc etc etc. My initial approval was denied because Insurance required a 6 month medically supervised diet, so I did all that, and it took 2-3 weeks for the approval the second time around. My Revision Surgery was on March 21st. As long as you jumped through their hoops, you should be all set! -
Dec 14, the start of victory or just another battle?
Shontel replied to Tracy46545's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Tracy, I had similar experiences with my band also. It worked, it didn't work..I went to Mexico (Monterrey) thinking (as 2 different docs suspected) that I had an erosion. After the endo, it was found I didn't. Well, I was already there...the doc said he could do it (Dr. Zapata is absolutely FABULOUS) so rather than coming back, I said lets GO FOR IT...I did have a lot of adhesions around my band. And when they removed it and did the sleeve, the portion where the band was ended up swelling severely...shut off completely, hence I was vomiting for 2 days....once that subsided, it was a breeze. I'm down 17 pounds in 1 week!! I would do it over again in a heartbeat. Band to Sleeve revisions are a little different and need to be watched closely..but it seems from where you've come from, it should be a breeze...will keep you in my thoughts and prayers, let me know if you have any questions, glad to help with any info I can. -
I am in Molino, north of Pensacola. My band date is Dec 18th by Dr. Lord at Sacred Heart. I have several friends who have had gastric bypass, but only one who has been banded. I would love to have a "Band Group" meeting. Do any of you attend the Support Group Meetings held each month at SHH? I have not been to one yet. What do you think about meeting there in January?

Gastric Sleeve for over 210 KG and BMI 70
shedo82773 replied to rajivwelikala's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My hubby had a BMI of 64 and wanted the RNY but they couldn't do it due to some prior surgeries etc. But he had the Sleeve in June 2016 and has only lost 70#'s. Now I know there are people that have had GREAT results with the Sleeve. He doesn't seem to have enough restriction. Most Dr.'s will suggest the RNY for the weight that you have. But you are young and seem to be in good health. He had a Lap Band for 13 years but it malfunctioned so he went in for a revision to an RNY which they couldn't do. His Band had eroded into his Liver. His starting weight when he had the Sleeve was 420#'s. Most Dr.'s would suggest the RNY at your weight but you seem to be fairly healthy so who knows. Now I had the RNY 3 years ago and I have had GREAT results. Granted my weight wasn't as high but I started out with a weight of 249#'s this time I was 285 but managed to lose down to 249. I got below my goal weight in 6 months and have maintained my 124# loss for 2 and 12 years. You are the only one that can make that decision which surgery you will have. Talk to your Surgeon to help you with that decision. Good Luck and I look forward to seeing your journey. -
I had the bypass to help with joint pain and chronic pain. I have rheumatoid arthritis and have been on prednisone for many years. It was a vicious cycle for me. I took the pred to be able to function - the pred made me hungry - the food made me gain weight - had to increase pred to function - and so on. My goal was to get off the pred for good. I knew losing weight would help. I am 17 months post op and have lost 125. My joints feel so much better and I only have 1-2 flare ups a month. I have decreased my pred from 20mg a day to 2.5mg a day. Every time I try to go lower I have a flare up, but I am not giving up. I know enjoy life so much. Will the pain ever go away completely - no - but I have more good days than painful days. I exercise all the time. I play soccer 3-4 nights a week. My mom has degenerative disk disease as well, and she does not take good care of her self. Please make sure you get in your protein like you are supposed to. It does so much for our bodies! Good luck!!

Gastric Sleeve or Gastric Bypass?
James Marusek replied to SillySavy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am over 4 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. I was taking 5 prescription medications prior to surgery (2 for diabetes, 2 for high blood pressure, and 1 for asthma). Now I take none. I took some supplements (vitamins, minerals) prior to surgery. Now I take more. But the cost of the added vitamins is less than the cost of the prescription medicines that I use to take. So I am money ahead. I also had severe acid reflux prior to surgery. That is gone now. I had sleep apnea. I would keep my wife awake at night, all night long because she was a light sleeper, prior to surgery. Several months after surgery, I would find her hovering over my bed at night. I would ask her what she was doing and she said, I was sleeping so silently, that she thought I was dead and she was trying to see if I was still breathing. I had several other conditions as well that went into remission after the surgery. Before you make up your mind about which surgery, it might be good to listen to what your surgeon recommends. Also some insurance companies will pay for one type of surgery but not the other. So it is worth investigating this element. As far as your specific questions: ▪️can you stretch your sleeve/bypass easily? Since I have an issue with portion control, this is a major concern for me. I believe the answer is NO, stretching is a myth. ▪️Is dumping syndrome really helpful or is it not worth it? Helpful ▪️Bypass patients: let's say I can control the Vitamin deficiency issue with supplements and the dumping syndrome issue with cutting out sugar and fats as best I can, do you think it was worth the complications (gallstones, stoma obstruction, etc)? I did not experience complications. Also right after surgery, your body may reject fats and sugars because the part of the stomach that normally processes these has been cut away but as time goes on at about a year, your intestines will realize something is wrong and step up to the plate and your body will again be able to absorb these food types without dumping. I had a major sweet tooth prior to surgery and this contributed to my weight and to my diabetes. So I have to avoid sugars like a plague. I rely on natural no calorie sweeteners (such as stevia) and synthetic sweeteners (such as Splenda) to put the sweetness back into my life. -
Ladies, I'd love some input. I've been off of my birth control since I started my WLS journey back in mid january. I won't be back on it until a month post-op, which will be early to Mid-March. I've been on Ortho Tri-Cyclen (with a brief stint on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo) for going on about 9 years. It's gone swimmingly. I have regular, brief, tolerable periods, my skin feels clear, my moods are great. Since I've been off, it's been pretty hellish. Can't predict my cycle, off the charts moody, acne like a pre-teen. My question isn't about returning to it, because until it's family-making time in a few years, I'd like to stick to it. My PCP and my surgeon state that having gastric bypass should not have any impact on the way my body absorbs my birth control because it's such a tiny pill. With insurance, it'll cost me almost $40 a month for this pill. If I go generic and have it mailed, it's free (I pay small shipping costs). I've never had generic birth control and the thought of it kind of makes me nervous. Has anybody switched from a preferred brand to a generic birth control and how did that go? I know most generics are basically the same product just from a different manufacturer to cut costs, but getting "cheap" birth control doesn't really sit well with me... Thanks in advance!

Gastric Sleeve or Gastric Bypass?
sleepingbeauty30 replied to SillySavy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
So happy for both of you! I hope I get to meet my goals also pray everything goes well. Still debating on sleeve or bypass. Now did you get any loose skin? How many weeks did it take you to heal before exercising?? -
I'm an OR nurse in a large Boston OR that also does bariatric surgery. I have been and OR nurse for 25 years and I have to tell you that I can probably count on two hand the amount of times someone died from general anesthesia. It is extremely rare unless you are a very sick individual. It is a myth perpetuated by TV,the movies and people's fears that "I won't wake up!" I have assisted tens of thousands of surgeries and am happy to be having general anesthesia for a lapband in the future. The biggest risks of surgery are not the anesthesia but the postop course which for a lap-band is very safe compared to gastric bypass which holds the bigger risks. Postop they have to watch for blood clots, pulmonary embolism and infection.
