where do you fit your protein in? how do you get calories?
Adri replied to MeMeMEEE's topic in Food and Nutrition
AVOCADO! It is high in calories and healthy fats. Poach chicken breasts and shred them, smother them with avocado and it helps the chicken go down easy. At 5 weeks out I could also add a little cheddar cheese and taco sauce. It was delicious to me cuz I was tired of all the artificial sweet stuff...shakes, Jello, yogurt, pudding...blaaaa! (poached salmon will really up the protein) -
I am right with you! I am full of regrets myself. My doctor is cold and makes me feel like I'm stupid so I don't ask questions. I ended up with problems with my left lung that caused it to close up and fluid build up around it. The surgeon who put in my chest tube said it was from getting bumped around in the surgery. My stomach burns sometimes horribly or I throw up foam. I am staying nauseous lately so I fight to get in 40 g of protein. I had my surgery 12/29/14. I have no energy and have been trying to find any options for a reversal or as much of one as I can get. I can't even finish a 5oz Greek yogurt and only nuts for solids without throwing up. So, yes I regret this decision even more than both ex-husbands!!! I've lost 47 lbs but the vomiting and chest tube were NOT worth it. I'm miserable. Will I ever be able to eat food again??

7 weeks post op and still doing 2 shakes per day
shellyd67 replied to shellyd67's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I can see the calories adding up with fancy shakes lol Mine are 192 calories each because I use 1% milk to mix them, so 1/2 of my daily calories are coming from shakes at this point. It's all I can do ... I get the other 300-400 calories with fish/seafood of some sort and maybe some cheese & yogurt ... -
sugar free jell-o, sugar free popsicles, Unjury chicken flavored broth, Body Fortress chocolate protien powder, sugar free pudding, tons of water lightly flavored with MIO, and greek yogurt.

I’m so weak and tired
2Bsmaller18 replied to cravenell888's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try the protein shake thinned out with milk. I only tolerated it ice cold initially. Maybe just try Fairlife milk and see if that is tolerable and work up to the shakes? What about soups? I was allowed low fat cream of chicken, mushroom etc. but I had to strain the pieces out. Maybe try that. I would only do 2 tablespoons, wait an hour, try 2 more etc. Otherwise maybe low sugar yogurt, it can be flavored but not chunks of fruit. -
Head Hunger Considered Less Legitimate?
TakingABreak replied to sillykitty's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I mean, zero offense, but I just don't know how you have a 400 calorie day. I just cant fathom it... I would be super curious to see what you eating? and I'm not making mockery of you, I just can't see less than 200 calories in a each meal. Sometimes, I even go over that, rarely, but still. Therefore 200 calories per meal, is minimum of 600. Unless I skip breakfast, which is never going to happen LOL. And of course I'm typing this as I'm eating carrot sticks and greek yogurt veggie dip. -
I'm afraid to cheat. I have been told that if my liver has not shrunk, the surgeon will open you up only to close you back up and not do the surgery. I have too much invested for that to happen to me. I think you all need to really think about the seriousness of this. I'm going into day 3 and so far, so good. But I am allowed to have yogurt, jello, applesauce, fish, chicken, some vegetables and salad along with 2 protein shakes daily, oh an oatmeal. It's kind of a weird diet, but it's definitely doable.

<2 weeks out and having problems with anything other than water
momohime posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on May 5th, so I'm a little over a week and some change out. So far, everything has been great.. with one exception, of course. I know I'm supposed to be getting my Protein in and drinking a ton of Water.. problem is, just the thought of my Protein shakes makes my stomach churn. I have a hard time with popsicles and jell-o too, to the point where.. since my surgery, I have had exactly 1 Protein shake, 3 popsicles, 2 jell-o cups, and I tried a few bites of yogurt but my stomach said NO! I haven't even been getting in as much water as I should.. and my surgeon said wait before I start taking my Multivitamins and Calcium until 2 weeks out, so I haven't even been doing that. I've lost 15 pounds since my surgery date, but I'm worried that because my diet is so extremely lacking in protein and basically everything else that what I've lost has been muscle. Has anybody else had this problem? Have I just totally screwed myself with muscle loss instead of fat loss? I guess I just need to woman up and drink the protein shakes anyway, but holy crap.. do not want! -
I eat a lot of greek yogurt so I never bothered with probiotics. Then again I guess the amount of yogurt I eat is why I am never constipated.

Phentermine after 5 month stall
mskitty66 replied to jam2412's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Drop the carbs and the yogurt. Increase your protein. you should be able to have 3-4 ounces of meat at a time. I would ditch the premier shake too honestly, and replace it with meat unless you really just can't eat and that is your only option. Cut out all processed foods (and Protein shakes are fake processed foods), and eat lean meats you cook yourself, get up to 90 grams of protein and I am pretty sure you will see the scale moving. Even with your not intense workouts you are still probably burning more calories than you are intaking. You need more protein to fuel yourself. Thank you for all your advice. It gets so confusing sometimes, sometimes I'm told I'm not eating enough calories and then I'm told I'm eating too much ! It's so confusing !Yes I feel the same way its like I don't know how many calories my body needs. Sent from my LG-K330 using the BariatricPal App -
10/14/09 - Teenagers, can we shoot them?
tonya66 commented on tonya66's blog entry in Sunshine2's (Tonya's) Journal
Drama, drama, drama......story of my life these days with two teenagers in the house. My 16 year old got grounded, so I took her phone away from her, well, she thinks she is smarter than me so she sneaks around and buys herself a "trackphone" or "pay as you go phone" so I wouldn't know about it. I'm not stupid, everytime in the past I have taken her phone, she beggs me for it back, does extra chores etc. This time, she didn't say a word, I could tell it didn't even bother her so I figured she snuck around and got her a phone. Last night I found it hidden under her pillow. SCORE 1 for me! Well, being the concerned mother, I find a lot of text to this one boy that we have forbid her to see, and let me tell you, IT WAS NOT PRETTY AT OUR HOUSE LAST NIGHT! I don't think my daughter will be leaving the house until she is about 20 years old now. I've pretty much grounded her for the rest of her teenage years. Needless to say, with all this drama, I didn't make it to the gym tonight which even made me more mad! Tonight we are having a meeting with our daughter and our Elders from church to finish up our little discussion, so I doubt I will make it tonight, but I might.....depends on how long it last and how emotionally drained I am afterwards. Kids are wonderful, but teenagers........can we shoot them? lol. Question: Liquid Diet Before Surgery
piercedqt78 replied to NJChick's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Today is day nine on liquids for me. I have to say that the first 3 days were really bad, but now I am not even hungry. I have to make myself drink the protein shakes and have at least 1 cup of yogurt each day. ( I am allowed 3 servings) I drink propel and it is just the best stuff around, I just discovered the melon and it is soooo yummy. As for the chewing, I chew sugar free gum, my doc said that was fine, as were sugar free mints. I found that the protein gave me a bad aftertaste so the mints have been helpful. I also think that I will not have the post-op hungar to deal with now and that is really going to be a blessing, I am being banded on the 28th. Only 2 more days whooohooo!!!~Mandy -
What type of "diet plan" did your doc give you?
Jachut replied to tm1019's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Bad carbs is highly processed white carbs - sugar in other words. Donuts, white breads, white Pasta, too much starchy foods like potatoes and white rice. Basically low GI foods (glycaemic index) meaning they give you that sugar rush, are digested quickly and lead to an insulin rush. Good carbs are low glycaemic index ones, brown foods - wholegrains, certain fruits, vegetables, etc. There's no real consensus, proponents of the GI diet believe that eating only low GI foods has a similar effect to a high Protein diet in terms of fat loss and balancing blood sugar levels. I tend to believe it too - and it does have the major effect of weight loss, blood chemistry improvements AND its good for your bowels becuase its high fibre. Anyway, I eat plenty of carbs and I"ve still lost weight, I just avoid high GI ones. I tend to try to stay moderate on fat but I dont hold back on good fats like fish oils and avocado. I dont purposely buy low fat products becuase with things like yogurt and cheese, your body doesnt absorb the Calcium, Vitamin A and D as well without the fat, your body does need small amoutns of it. I drink skim milk because i prefer it but eat full fat yogurt and cheese (in small amounts). -
Found a way to make my yogurt taste better!!
malinda1229 replied to Kristy29's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been making my own greek yogurt..its easy and less expensive!! I just add fresh fruit..no sugar, no additives, nothing but fresh milk and fruity goodness. You can find the method on our blog www.thereddragoncafe.blogspot.com I'm also finding that it is more filling eating whole or cut up fruit rather than the sugary processed fruit they put in yogurt. -

honk replied to Kristy29's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I eat lunch at around 1; go swimming in the early evening, and eat dinner around 7. Sometimes I have fruited Greek Yogurt by itself. Occationaly I will add vanilla flavored low fat/carb protein powder (and some splenda). Makes for a good prework out snack. -
Post sleeved Group Question
missheidi47 replied to AJ cowgirl's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I'm almost 3 months out. I did not have a problem getting my liquids or Protein, really from the beginning. I've also had almost no nausea. I've lost 47 pounds (including the pre-op diet.) Even though I had no trouble getting in my liquids, I'm full after eating 5 ounces of Greek yogurt even now. My sleeve is definitely working for me. I think I was just blessed with a relatively easy postop course. Sounds like you were too. The weight will come off. It seemed slow to me in the beginning, but losing 47 pounds since mid-March is not really slow, so I'm not complaining. Good luck! -
6 Month Post-op Carb-free Diet?
myrori replied to My Big Day 3/15/2011's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You don't miss the carbs after surgery. in the beginning you can not get bread down and would your really be drinking or eating sugary foods? At 3 months a typical day for me is the following: Protein shake 3 carbs Greek yogurt 5 carbs chicken breast or tuna lunch,, after a few bites of the meat there is no room for bread or much else protein shot 0 carbs chicken or turkey for dinner and maybe a bite or two of broccoli. There really is just not a lot of room and you want to put quality calories in, not ones with carbs that will raise your blood sugar and slow weight loss. While you may think you will miss food, the fact is you are so totally full that you will not miss it. -

I was put on Optifast and I hated it. It made my stomach so irritated. Have you tried any of the drinks by EAS? They have some RTD cartons and powders you have to mix. Those aren't too bad. The powder I really like is by Designer whey. Maybe try blending them really well with some ice, flavored yogurt, fresh fruits, or just different artificial flavorings to give them a better taste. I also tried those Protein shots they have a GNC, YUK and double YUK!!! They are too thick and taste so bad. You just have to get creative with those Protein Drinks so that you will be able to get enough protein in. One of my favorites was using ice, chocolate Protein Powder, coconut flavoring, and almond flavoring to make an almond joy flavored drink. I mix my powders with Water instead of milk to cut down on the calories, but you can mix with FF milk or soymilk. Anyway, I hope everyone has a great day. Best wishes, Stephanie

EAS makes a really good Protein shake called Myoplex. They have different kinds anywhere from 20 grams of protein to 42 per shake and the carbs are really low too. Another really good one that I stumbled on last week is called nectar. It tastes like kool-aid and is very refreshing. It is not as filling as the EAS shakes but it is perfect for right after surgery when you really can't swallow anything thick anyway. Bonus:: You can always add yogurt and fruit to it to thicken it up. Cheapest place I have found to buy it is: Bodybuilding.com - Syntrax Nectar - Best Tasting Protein! On sale now! This is actually a great site to learn about the different Proteins in the drinks that we are buying. Like everything else, there are high and low grades to protein powders too. No sence in wasting more money on nasty tasting Protein Drinks if you don't have to. Besides, some of them like muscle milk are made to gain muscle weight and unless you are working out regularly and weight training, you really don't need that type of protin drink. Look for the Meal Replacement shakes not the ones that will bulk you up. Save the calories and stuff you really don't need in the beginning when you are trying to lose weight. Read the product reviews. This helped me tremendously. Hope it does you too. Crystal Banded on 8/14/2008. Starving but so excited!!!!

Start pre-op diet in 2 days. Suggestions?
xovictorialynn replied to xovictorialynn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some things I'm allowed in any amount are crystal light, diet soda, sugar free jello, and broth only soups. I'm more concerned about what I can have in limited amounts, like no sugar added carnation instant breakfasts, low fat milk (lactaid for me) and chobani yogurt. I need to keep my protein per day around 56 grams, which I feel like I won't know how to do without overdoing everything. -
1 week post-op nausea, hot flashes, no energy
Cober1 replied to Cober1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm able to get my fluid and protein goals with the phenegrine, it's just incredibly unpleasant. My surgeon put me on full fluids when I went home from the hospital originally and it seemed to be going ok but then the hot flashes started yesterday. I've been doing 2 pure protein drinks, around 80oz of water and 4-6 oz of soup spread throughout the day. I probably have 2oz of protein drink or soup every couple of hours then sip water in between. I can't stand the constant sweetness of all the protein drinks but haven't found anything else that has that much protein so I keep defaulting to them. My surgeon said I can have anything that can be pureed to a smooth paste or pourable liquid. I'm scared to try anything past broth, yogurt or protein shakes with all the nausea I'm having though. I think I'll try going back to just water, broth, and tea for a few days. Hopefully it'll help.
