FINALLY had my scope done
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
On the struggle bus today. Was doing fine, having my breakfast (protein shake) and 2/3 of the way through, I was hit with EXCRUTIATING pain, pressure, and burning. Lasted about 30 minutes. I dumped the rest of my shake and had to just ride it out. It finally stopped, but omg it hurt. This is the 4th time this has happened in the last 3 months. This is originally what caused me to go to the GI specialist to begin with, and it seems like it's happening more often since the scope and biopsies on Thursday. I had it the first time 3 months ago, the 2nd time a month later, the 3rd time this past Saturday, and the 4th time today. I just want the results of the biopsies to come in so I can know what the hell is going on and what we're gonna do to fix it. This waiting is bulls**t. I doubt the keloids have much to do with this, but I think the gastric tumor and the ton of polyps are the issue. Just need to know if the tumor is cancer and what I can do about it. Something's gotta give. I'm tired of this. -
I try to eat three meals a day that are healthy and keep myself to one serving of carbs a day - if I have a bagel thin for breakfast - with almond butter - that is it for the day. Or save it for half a baked potato with dinner - I eat pretty simple proteins like grilled fish or chicken with grilled vegetables and some fruit. I do tuna salad (with mashed avacado) instead of mayo - For work lunches.

I go back to work tomorrow after 2 weeks off. I had my post-op today. I'm down 18 lbs from the day of surgery. I'm feeling great and getting my 60+ g of protein in and tons of water. I do 2oz of soft foods every 2 hours. Today my BP was 114/70 and I haven't been on BP meds since 2 days before surgery. I sort of feel like that's a huge NSV already!

Hello everyone my Gastric sleeve surgery was January 19th. I was super nervous and anxious. Dealing with slight soreness and some surgical pain. I'm @ the 30g of protein range and roughly 50L of fluids. This two week phase is going to be tough. I'm glad to see that there's a place where we can look for support when needed.

Huge congratulations to you - I know you've posted several times recently about your journey and it's inspiring. Please can I ask what you do in your planned weight loss phases now? Do you calorie count, track protein and/or other macros, restrict any food groups, follow any particular route?

I have the option of using my own therapist for the psych eval. My surgeons office sent me a list of eval questions to give to my therapist. What format did your therapist use to answer and submit your eval? Ex. Question-answer, summary, etc?

When does it get better?
Lisa XO replied to NotSoSkinnyMini's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Has your team ever given you IV liquids? If not, maybe ask for those to help get you over the hump in trying to get in more calories. Maybe if that helps your nausea and dehydration, you'd be able to tolerate more calories. I think I am going to go to an infusion center in the next couple of days just to see if it helps me feel better. I know you said that you can't tolerate dairy but wondering if you've tried Fairlife fat free lactose free milk. I just discovered it after a suggestion here. It has really helped me get in more liquid and some protein, to boot. I make a sugar free hot chocolate with it since I tolerate warm much better than cold. Maybe your issue with dairy is the lactose and this milk might be tolerated? -
When does it get better?
NotSoSkinnyMini replied to NotSoSkinnyMini's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you so very much for your reply and advice. I will try everything you mentioned. I know I am dehydrated, I have been setting a timer on my phone to drink at least every 30 minutes. My hot flashes come with just one bite, so it’s not that I am over eating. Since my procedure I can not tolerate milk and dairy. I did try milk last week and got sick with just 1/4 cup. Many months ago yogurt was my go to, but it too started to make me sick. I will try yogurt again today as well. I do mix unflavored protein in to my water and tea or coffee. I have not been tested for anything. I have only had phone appointments and am told to consult with the nutritionist on different things to eat. I will call the doctors office this afternoon and see if I can schedule an appointment. I appreciate the time and thoughtfulness you put into the post. -
When does it get better?
summerseeker replied to NotSoSkinnyMini's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You need to do as your pcp says and eat. First find things to drink, you sound as if you are dehydrated. Water and milk and thinned protein drinks are safe starting options. Have you tried protein water? Have you tried broth? Find the temperature you can tolerate. I managed hot drinks better than icy cold. You need to eat and the calorie content will not matter for a couple of weeks. Once you get some calories in you will start to feel better. To start you eating again, can I suggest yogurts, high protein tinned or homemade soups [blitz it if you need to] mashed potato and gravy, Custard, instant porridge. and soft baked crustless quiche or cheese souffle. Aim to eat [ or drink your food ] a good amount of foods every 2 or 3 hours. Eat whatever you can, its critical to you getting and feeling better Lack of protein will make you weak. Lack of liquid makes your throat slimy. You feel nausea because you may not be drinking enough. Getting hot or in my case shivery cold is because we have overeaten. Getting the foamies [spitting out foam] is because you have put too much in your new stomach in one go. Eat or drink smaller sips until you get a hang of your limits. Lastly, have you been tested for a stricture? because I had similar problems until about 10 months out because they found my internal stitch line was still swollen. I just had to do the best I could until it settled. You should be getting more help from your team than you are, when did you last speak to them? -
Hello everyone, I’m new here I am really struggling… I had surgery 3/7 of 2022 and started at 250. I am now 123 and seem to lose a pound or two each week which is way below my goal weight that was 150. I have so many issues eating pretty much everything. I can only eat or drink small amounts. I am extremely exhausted. I feel faint a lot. I can’t sleep. I had major issues eating at first, but around August my PCP told me eat what I can and stop trying to force the protein. I then ate - which was mainly fruits and veggies. I started feeling better for about a month and then got Covid. Since I have been struggling again to eat. I feel sick. Nauseous. Over heated each time I eat or drink anything beside water. My throat and my mouth get all mucous like or slimey. My arm pits sweat, but not under the shoulder it’s where your forearm meets the upper arm. Dizzy. Weak. My throat feels like it constricts a lot when I eat most things. This has pretty much been the norm for me since my surgery. I try and eat slowly. Chew every thing a million times. I can do any protein drinks because they make me sick. I dry heave and spit up foam. I can’t exercise for lack of energy and have zero muscle left. Any one else have anything similar? The doctors say it will get better. When??

Hi! I've been doing some cupboard cleaning and I found that I have a full case of Bariatric Advantage Clear Protein drinks (https://www.bariatricadvantage.com/item/clearly-protein) and 7 or 8 bottles of Premier Protein Clear Protein Drink. I would like to pass it along to someone that can pick it up. I'm in Brentwood, East Bay Area.

Hello, I am 53 years old and just in the beginning of my process. Lost my required weight prior to surgery, Psychological evaluation completed, meet with surgeon, meeting monthly with dietitian and now waiting for the perapproval from insurance. Hoping for April or May. Still to do on my list is joining a support group. My weight loss clinic has one but I would like this as an option too. I will be having the gastric sleeve surgery. Excited for this journey. Thanks for your support.

The Plant-Based Bariatric: Can It Be Done?

This is the US website for MyProtein https://us.myprotein.com/ranges/myvegan/products.list - scroll down to the "Clear Vegan Isolate". That's protein water, and you guys actually get flavours we don't! -
Nobody wants to regain weight. Though sometimes it happens. It could be our body’s set point & therefore our weight settling. The second/third year bounce back regain does happen. Cravings, boredom, emotional issues are always there in our heads driving us to eat especially for us. If your way of eating or exercising is too restrictive & not sustainable. Complacency. Health issues. Medications & just life in general can all contribute to a possible regain. I accepted it might happen. I also decided I’d do everything I could to reduce my chance of it happening though knowing some things would be beyond my control. I made changes & have stuck to them. I still watch what I eat & how much I eat. I randomly check calories & nutritional value. Monitor my fluid & protein intake every day. I prepare & cook most of my food avoiding high processed foods & prepared/ready ingredients or meals. It’s not difficult, restrictive or limiting. It’s just what I do - habits, routines & a sustainable way of eating. And yes, I have treats just not often. I’m 3.75 years out & I had a small but rapid regain (2kgs) at about 2.5 years. Wasn’t happy but accepted it had happened. Then my doctor suggested it & some other symptoms might be because I wasn’t absorbing my HRT meds. Changed to a patch & she was right. The weight is slowly dropping off without me doing anything (& that included over Christmas). This is my opinion, my experience & what works for me & my life. Others will have different experiences & suggestions especially those who are further out than me. All the best.

I had mild reflux before my surgery which I managed with dietary changes & rarely needed meds (couple of times a year). It was not related to my weight or a hernia. My surgeon was willing to do the sleeve because my reflux was so mild. I still have it. I lost a couple of symptoms but gained some others & I need meds everyday. If you are already taking medication every day now to manage your gerd I’d think bypass may be your better option. Worth a conversation with your surgeon. Dumping, though less common, can happen with the sleeve too. It can be managed with simple dietary choices once you’ve worked out what sets you off (sugar or fats). Some even find they can occasionally have a small amounts of these foods without issue as they’ve discovered their trigger points. As others said, any absorption issue may just need a swap of medication such as not taking slow release meds. Just discuss with your surgeon & prescribing doctor. I noticed in your other post you have fibromyalgia. Though you’re not a medication for it currently, you will need to discuss future options with your doctor even with a sleeve as you can’t take anti inflammatories (NSAIDS). I developed an absorption issue after I had my gall removed (2 years after my sleeve) - protein & my HRT meds. I just upped my protein intake, take creons to help with absorption & went to a HRT patch. Pretty easy really.

Beef allergy and clear liquid weeks
Arabesque replied to AcctInTX's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’d look for vegetarian & vegan options just to be sure. Like the plant based protein shakes & powders & for clear fluids protein waters. Oh, there are vegan jellies you could try too. -
Beef allergy and clear liquid weeks
catwoman7 replied to AcctInTX's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had mostly protein shakes the first couple of weeks. We were told to use those that were 100% whey protein isolate - I don't think many - if any - brands of that contain any beef byproducts. -
Beef allergy and clear liquid weeks
AcctInTX posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all, this is my first post. I have gastroparesis and am going in for an RNY in March. I've always had the pre-planned mindset, and I'm worried about the clear liquid weeks since I'm allergic to beef and beef protein is in alot of foods. No hospital jello for me! What is the normal type of protein supplement those first two weeks? I'm going to start cooking and freezing chicken bone broth soon, so I can eat easily. Thanks, and I'm looking forward to getting to know y'all! -
Food Before and After Photos

Salad! Salmon with a pre made mix called sweet kale: kale, cabbage, brussel sprouts etc. It comes with seed mix toppings of pepitas, sunflower seeds and dried cranberries. I think the included dressing is a creamy poppy seed blend (which I never eat) I used sesame oil and soy sauce to dress it. I almost made the mistake of adding croutons knowing that this is already a lot of chewing.I’m so glad I did not. 😆 Also a protein water I’ve been working on for the past 2 days. They have improved a lot in the last 5 years -
I was 68 when I had my sleeve. My BMI was not high enough to have insurance pay for it, so I self-paid at great expense! I only wish I had done it years earlier - I hadn’t realized it was an option!

The Plant-Based Bariatric: Can It Be Done?
kc892020 replied to kc892020's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thank you for your response! I really appreciate it. It seems like Australia has more access to plant-based protein drinks and shakes than we do here, based on what I've been researching. For instance, that water sounds amazing but I can't seem to find anything like that here. :( -
Thanks for the wonderful replies! I'm now at the end of Jan, managed to lose 2 pounds, I'm a slow loser. There are no more cookies, chocolate or any junk left in my house. I had to retrain my brain to increase the protein and vegs and skip the Carbs for awhile. I feel much better, but amazed at how fast that sweet tooth came back. I'm under massive stress right now, I'm limited physically how much I can walk so meditation is my best freind right now. If I can meditate every other day, life stays under control. I love that there are so many sugar alternatives we can use for baking to fake out the sweet tooth! Best wishes to all and Happy New Year.

I never used a bariatric cook book either. There were some recipes in a book about bariatric surgery my surgeon gave me & I did make one recipe a few times (a tinned fish frittata muffin thing - tasty & I often swapped ingredients for variety). But I’m not someone who uses a lot of recipes. May start with one for a new idea but rarely follow them exactly. Took things I usually made & just prepared them using healthier ingredients & better cooking methods. Though there wasn’t much to change as I was pretty healthy in the meals I prepared myself. Used spray olive oil or non stick pans or cooked some meats in the oven or grill so need for oil. Already didn’t use prepared sauces & such like pasta sauces. I kept things pretty simple as it was easier to work out protein, other nutrient & caloric content.

I'd recommend you to contact your insurance company and the bariatric surgery program in your new state. Find out what steps you'll need to take. In some cases, you may be able to transfer your existing progress to the new state. However, in other cases, you may need to start the process over. It's also a good idea to ask about telehealth options for the nutrition classes. So that you could complete the classes online even after moving to another state. Btw, this it's going to be an overwhelming period. If you hire a good movers company, such as https://acelinemoving.com, you'll have less stress. I hope I helped you.

How was the 2 week liquid diet
Mia the Pug replied to ShannyG's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on day 11 of my liquid diet. I've been having my protein shakes, water, sleepy tea with skim milk and no fat yogurt. I make sure to drink 64 fluid oz. of water daily----- and I JUST WANT SOME FOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want grilled chicken! Hahahahaha! I have surgery Monday, Jan. 23, 2023. So- I won't eat anything solid, but I am exhausted, feel sick to my stomach, and have a massive head ache. Hopefully, after surgery, the headache will be gone, or someone will give me something for it. I'm excited to have my surgery!!!! I'm not nervous at all. I know this will be over and done and I will be healthy and happy. So, one day at a time I will get through this! You can too! Just.... ignore your sloshing tummy and try not to stay in the kitchen when your family is eating! Good luck everyone!
