  1. Somebody help define this for me. When somebody says they have lost x% of their excess...does "excess" just mean the pounds that put you out of the BMI normal category? Or does "excess" mean everything you want to lose? Because, for instance, I have lost 81% of the weight that puts me out of "normal" for my BMI. But I've only lost 58% of what I'm wanting to lose. But I have chosen a number that puts me at a relatively low BMI in the "normal" range. If I wanted to settle at the highest number that would make me "normal," then I could say I've lost 100% of my excess when I hit that number rather than saying I've only lost 72%. Does what I'm saying make sense? I'm just wondering what the stats are based on when they say patients lose x% of their excess weight. My surgeon never set a goal for me. I don't remember if I was asked what I wanted to get to. I think they'd be satisfied with "healthy." LOL

    CRAZZZZY! (about diet)

I do the same. I am not on a 'diet' as such - I wanted the band so I could get away from obsessing about diets. But while I am still a 'newbie' I have been watching my calories and try to keep it around 1000 - 1200. This also helps to tell me if I need more fill. Don't obsess about the weight loss it will come once you start getting your fills - just use the time till then to heal and experiment.

    Grits

ewww with sugar?? no, no, no. you eat them with butter & a pinch of salt. Or maybe some cheese or red-eye gravy. To the Aussie: do you have Polenta down-under? It's the same thing. As another poster said, do take it easy with grits, they're not weight loss friendly, they're ground corn and corn is a high glycemic food (ie, it tends to spike your blood sugar and then when the bld sugar levels drop.. you get hungry again faster). In general, grits are not high protein. However, if you add some cheese (preferably 2% or even lower fat), then you will get some protein. Pre-banding I LOVED my grits. Nothing better with eggs & sausage in the morning..or with fried catfish at night. Now I rarely eat them. They are a treat rather than an everyday food. Here's some info on a brand I sometimes buy. If I'm gonna indulge, I want the good stuff. With cool weather coming on, it might be time to have a little. I think it's been 6 months or more since I had any. Corn Grits Polenta - Organic - Bob's Red Mill
  4. This is my first post ever, I've been a lurker. I'm feeling like I haven't made the best use of my band. I was banded May 2006 and have, in general, been successful. I've lost 85 lbs. The problem is this, I'm a horrible eater. I guess in the last 2 and a half years I've figured out that ice cream never gets stuck, therefore I eat ice cream almost daily. I use the excuse that I can't eat much of anything else. That's a lie, of course. I've become lactose intolerant since banding... so the ice cream kinda comes right back out... I think thats the only reason I haven't gained the weight back. Help! I want to get back on track!!! Currently, I weigh 193. My goal is 150. I want someone to be accountable to and vice versa. Even though I'm struggling with my eating habits or really, its a eating disorder, I think I can be supportive of other banders too. My eating is emotionally based, I need to remember that and stop reaching for the ice cream instead of dealing with my anger, fear, depression, etc. A little about me, I'm 39... almost 40, ugh. I live in South Saint Paul, MN. I work fulltime in adult mental health. Also, I'm currently attending college to get my Master's degree in Social Work. I have 3 daughters, twins that are 18... their out living on their own and my youngest is 5, she just started Kindergarten. I'm married and we enjoy boating, camping, etc.
  5. The detailed description you gave of your Father with respect to how he regards women is answer enough. If appearance is the most important attraction and feature of a woman to him.....then would his support be genuine....or just as shallow as his regard towards women? Only you know that answer for sure. There could be many different reasons that you are losing weight.......does he, or any one else really need to know which method is working for you.....quite frankly, its no one's business but your's. I understand the need to share your experience with someone, or a small network of support individuals who you can express your excitement, your highs and lows, etc........be very selective and choose to tell only those who will be there for you in a strong positive way for the long haul. For those who you wish not to know but ask questions and comment....just tell them that you are working very hard at being careful and sensible with your eating habits and make it clear that you are living this minute by minute every day and don't wish to dwell on it...end of conversation........they don't need to know anymore than that. Good Luck Carol

I expect the maintenance to go fairly well and I have about 35lbs more till I will be on maintenance. I can't wait.

    The Downside of Weight Loss

You know, given my current situation, I've really wondered whether weight loss has somehow been a factor. There's no doubt about it, having a lot of fat gives your body a lot of places to store toxins and losing a lot of weight is a really big upheaval for your body, it causes changes to virtually every system. It really is better never to get fat in the first place. But you have to focus on the positive, that the benefits of weight loss to our health FAR outweigh the negatives.
  10. Nothing will sabotage a perfectly good weight loss plan faster than an inner perfectionist who expects you to get everything "right," one hundred percent of the time and leaves you feeling like a failure when you (inevitably) don't. If you struggle with an inner perfectionist, here are five strategies for moving it out of your way. 1. Separate yourself from your perfectionist. YOU are not your perfectionist. However, if you’ve been applying all-or-nothing standards for a long time, you might feel like you are. Spend some time stepping back and observing your behavior. Get familiar with the perfectionistic thinking. Notice where it comes up and what the consequences are when it does. 2. Label it. Start thinking about “that unhelpful inner perfectionist” or whatever name you want to give this way of thinking that gets in your way. Acknowledge it to yourself whenever you see it—“there goes that unhelpful perfectionistic thinking again.” This is different than “I’M doing it again.” Remind yourself of tip number one. Your inner perfectionist is an it and is NOT you. It’s simply a way of thinking–which you can change. 3. Make a list of all the ways that your inner perfectionist is not helpful or the examples of how your perfectionist has made or can make things worse. Don’t forget to include the guilt and shame that usually comes with listening to an inner perfectionist (because we never measure up). 4. Create an alternate mantra. Come up with a short, sweet message that you can use when the perfectionistic thinking chimes in with “you screwed up” or “you failed” or “now you blew it.” This must be a message you believe to be true. It may be as simple as “nobody’s perfect” or “trying to be perfect is not helpful to me.” 5. Give yourself permission to encounter your perfectionist over and over. Don’t fall into a trap of expecting to be perfect in vanquishing your inner perfectionist. You’ll have success—sometimes—and sometimes you won’t feel so successful. But over time and practice, it gets easier. Really. 11. This may seem long and I apologize but I have some questions that I was wondering if any of you in the same or similar situation can answer. Even if you aren't and can provide an answer I would really appreciate it. Background Info I'm 19 years old and a freshman in college. I recently got banded on March 26,2010 and I'm still trying to get used to my band. I started off really well and lost a bunch of weight. The month or so before my surgery I weighted 360 and last week I was at 335. Unfortunately now I'm at 341. Questions 1. Is gaining weight normal when you start to eat regular food again? 2. I'm worried about stretching my pouch. I haven't gotten a fill yet. Is it possible to stretch the pouch before the first fill? 3. How would I know if I did stretch my pouch? 4. Is there any way that it can be fixed or if I ever do/did will I have ruined my chances at this working for me? 5. Would someone know if their band slipped? If so how? 6. Do weird things cause the band to slip or is it simply overeating or something like that? Thank you so much to anyone who can answer any of those questions. I'm sure I'll think of more soon since I'm so worried about this. Thanks again for reading.
  12. :blushing:I have been contimplating weight loss surgery for about a year now. I was set on having the gastric bypass until I heard all the horror stories of having the loose skin and having to have another expensive surgery for the removal of that skin. I was told to consider lapband because the weight loss is less dramatic. I do not have any kind of support group besides my own mother but some of you may know that hearing your mother tell you that she doesnt approve only makes matters worse. So here I am reaching out to people I do not know, but I hope to be able to start friendships and start my own support group on here. I have my consultation with the surgeon in December and then an evaluation and they said my surgery will be in February. So I need some advice, help, or just people to talk me through this so I can better my health. XOXOXO Jess
  13. Hi I havent had the problems you mention, so I don't think I can be of help there. I hope you can talk with your doctor and nutrition person. Are you planning to let your body heal and then get another fill at some point in the future? Someone familiar with what causes heart burn might be helpful to you -- to teach you about which foods to eat that would not contribute to heartburn. I don't know about what causes left side pain under the rib. I don't really know what to say that might help. I just wanted to at least respond that I read your post and hoping you find the right combination of medical care that will get you back on track and losing weight again. Keep asking your questions and voicing your concerns....and never, never, never give up. ~hiddn
  14. Hello, My name is LaShonda and I am a 24 year old single mother who weighs 388 lbs. I have been researching the LAP-BAND®® for about 14 months now...and recently have gone through some steps in getting it over the last couple of months. I started my journey with the idea that this might be an easy road for me, but I have come to realize that it is not. However I have prayed about it and have come to the conclusion that this is what I want to do. I started in at 403 lbs the heaviest I have ever been, since then I have tried numerous diet pills and diets. But with my High blood pressure there is not a lot of things I can take. Good news is I have lost 15 lbs and plan to lose more, also I have attend a seminar and my psych evaluation is in July. After I see Dr. Williams I can then have my insurance approved and make a consult visit with Hurley bariatic clinic. Seminar date: 6/9/2010 Psych visit: 7/14/2010 Start Weight:403 lbs Goal weight: 185 lbs current weight: 388 lbs This was the first post I ever posted in this was back in july. I am so proud to say that I can now post Seminar date: 6/9/2010 Psych Visit:7-14-10 Consultation:9-13-10 Insurance Approval: 6-1-10 Nutrition visit: 10/4/10 Pre Admissions: 10/27/10 Surgery:11/11/2010 I am so very happy that I have made it this far and can not wait until I become banded so I can make this extra change in my life progess. This has been a long road but this is only the beginning.
  15. Well I went for my first fill yesterday at the office and he couldn't do it blindly so I went to the hospital today to have it done under floro. Apparently my port is too deep and it tilted sideways and is movable so I have to be re-operated on and I am aggravated but stuff happens. I am self pay and I reminded him of that. He told me not to worry and that he would work it out with the hospital so that I wouldn't have to pay anything. I sure hope he can re-do it soon. He's going to move the port up higher right in the middle below my sternum. I didn't even go to the gym today cuz I was a bit depressed but I'll be right back at it tomorrow. Yesterday I was 6 weeks out and had lost 37 pounds but that's because I am so complaint and I exercise like I'm supposed to. Last week I started weight training as well. Has anyone else had this happen to them or anything like it? Janet:confused:
  16. I dont know an awful lot about the sleeve and the band has worked fantastically well for me. BUT - if I were in the US and coping with the insane medical system you have, I would be very very strongly leaning towards a sleeve due to less intensive aftercare. Here, if you need a fill, you get it, it costs nothing, if you get a bit tight, you go back, you get a bit out, it still costs nothing, and if the following week you decide you really WERENT too tight, then you go back and it costs nothing. The surgeon is a few suburbs away, you dont have to fly interestate or out of the country, if you get banded by one surgeon and then move, you wont have another surgeon refusing to treat you because you werent originally his patient, etc etc etc. Sleeves are becoming more popular in Western Australia because its a simply ENORMOUS state and people are coming from very remote rural areas for banding. The less follow up required, the easier. When the band works well, it works very very well. YOu need to consider your strenghts and weaknesses. You need a fair bit of mettle to work a band and lose weight really successfully. You need to be preapred to eat right, to exercise, etc. Basically you have to do whatever you would have to lose weight before hand, it just makes it easier. Which I would hazard a guess to say that is true of ANY weight loss surgery. The band CAN be very difficult for some people and they struggle to find good restriction etc. That would be my thinking if I lived in your country. Other than that I cant comment. I am banded and it's suited me really really well, but obviously its super duper easy to manage a lapband and the required aftercare here. I dont think reversibility is such an issue really, not from my perspective three years down the track. I needed WLS to get the weight off and I need my band to keep it off. I would never in a million years remove it unless absolutely necessary and THEN I would convert to another surgery in a heartbeat. So yeah, that wouldnt be a huge issue to me.

    Time to...

It is getting cold, I've felt like an ice cube for 2 days now. Since losing weight, I'm no longer sharing the 'lets always keep it cold in the house' mentality with my husband We use to love keeping it at 60 degrees in the house.. now it's just him and I feel like I'm gonna die!!! I currently have 3 layers on, fuzzy socks, a sweater and an afghan in my lap. I just bumped the A/C up to 68.. I been doing this every once in a while and he goes around fussing about that's why he's been sweating lol.

    Did my Band Slip??

Hi Everyone, So I am starting to freak out a little bit. I had a little stomach bug this past Saturday and threw up 3 times. I am not having any pain, no relflux, and no nausea. I do feel that my appetite it larger that it "should" be. I have not gained any weight either. I would normally go see my surgeon tomorrow...but I will be on my way to Mexico for vacation until next Tuesday. Should I worry????? Thank you!!

    some insiration needed

You can do it if that's what you want. It took me a while to want it, and then I could commit. I just started walking. I'm walking 3.5 miles outdoors. Doesn't cost me a dime, but I did get a heat rash in the summer and now I'm like brrrr, but I keep on walking. Get a walking tape for indoors if you really can't make yourself walk outside. I think walking sheds weight faster than most exercises. Exercises are good for building muscle which Im going to need to get to, but putting that off. If you are hungry grab some Protein, a piece of rolled up ham, cheese once in a while, fry and egg in pam, etc. I even have a box of SF popsicles in my freezer, not my favorite thing, but I do what I need to. I do admit to cheating tonight, went to a pizza party, but only ate one and a half pieces. I also skipped lunch to do it. Its will power and if you want to do it enough, you will.

    Please help

Lap - My insurance says I have to have the 6month supervised diet from my PCP, but I've been on Weight Watchers since I was 15, my doctor knows this, but I have no medical records of going to WW.
  23. Hey, I am just starting this whole procedure. I have been to 2 seminars, one w/ Dr. Schmitt & one w/ Dr. Long. I really liked Dr. Schmitt but i was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on either one. Also, I was wondering about the 6 month diet thing. If you go to your OB/GYN did you only have to see them 3 times in 6 months? I also have PCOS(polycystic ovarian syndrome), which makes it easy to gain and hard to lose. If anyone can help with any of these questions, I would be grateful.:smile2:
  24. That's possible, as I've heard of some people's sleep apnea disappearing once they lose weight and they don't need the machine. Perhaps you are right and just a new level would help. If not, they are the perfect people to ask, as sleep studies are done for lots of reasons. But you likely know that already. Mary

    Is this normal?

Yeah......I find that I float about 2 lbs overnight. I feel like I am stuck though at my current weight and it is not moving down. I guess it is just a plateau and I am trying to take the advice I have given others which is to be patient with it! LOL
