  1. I was banded on March 23, 5 days ago. From about the 20th of Feb until March 19, I had lost 20 pounds! And in the last week, another 8. I went back to work and people are already noticing in my face and upper body that I am loosing. I am feeling it some, but since I still have lots of swelling in my tummy, my clothes are a little tighter that I would like. I have been cooking for my hubby & son, and doing ok...but last night the hungar pangs started. Since I was making sketti, I took some of the meat chewed it up until I got all of the flaovoring out, then spit it out. It was good, but just for the flavoring!!! That is what I miss is the different flavors...although adding extracts to the protein drinks help, my pallet is not very forgiving of me keeping all those good flavors from it! My 1st goal is 75 pounds by Christmas...I want to stay on that track. As soon as I am released to swim, we will be going to the Y Friday-Sunday so I can start that way, then back to walking and hopefully bike riding in the near future!

    Protien Powder

Is Unjury the only non-flavored protein powder out there?

    Baby Food?

Great ideas but at this point you need protein so I would make sure you're getting your protein and there's not much in the sweet stuff and baby food
  4. No specific help here, but does your state have Obamacare? You might need to go on the website and plug in your income to see your options. I am not even sure what your exact questions are. If you become ineligible for Medicaid, that option would be out the window entirely or is there a 'spend down' option where you get coverage but there is cost-sharing involved? Your employer plan sounds horrid, I have never heard of a company making someone wait an entire year to use insurance, if that is the case they must have a huge employee turnover - or do you mean paid medical 'leave' or use FMLA? - which companies do sometimes require one year for that option. GA is one of six states that requires group insurance to cover wls, BUT not all 'self funded companies' are required to and may have different requirements to get approval. Good luck.
  5. I totally understand where you are coming from. I have was watching my scale move, move, move and then Bam nothing! I work out 4 times a week at the gym and was getting really discouraged, but I was dropping pant, top and bra sizes so I was confused too. My trainer told me I was building up muscle and thats why I was losing the inches. I also was eating alot of soft foods (because they were safe) during that time. I started eating more protein based foods and boy did the scale start dropping. Keep up the good work! Classes/Pre-Surg/Current/Goal 316lbs/292lbs./247lbs./180ish
  6. I am pre-op, protein shakes 3x a day. No worries, I am commited. But I am also human. In the past, I would have been in and out of the kitchenette all afternoon filling my face........ I like your idea of snacks on hand. When I am post-op and on to solids, I will do just that! Thanks!

    Protein Powders

Good luck to you too! My nurse said we can have any protein powder as long as it fits within the nutritional guidelines. When you get that nut craving, drink some chicken broth, it helps a lot.

    Genepro

A few months ago I read a thread on here where a man mentioned using a Protein powder that is similar to GENEPRO but less expensive. I unfortunately cannot remember the name of that product, but perhaps you could do a keyword search and locate that thread. It's possible that powder is available in the UK. You could also try posting your question on the listing for Genepro on Amazon. Ask if they know of a distributor that ships to the UK, and alternatively, and if there's a similar product to try. Other Amazon consumers can reply to questions in addition to the vendor, and they might be able to offer more direction. http://www.amazon.com/Musclegen-Research-Genepro-Medical-Servings/dp/B00K6OSDYA

    Starbucks habit

I LOVE the Light Carmel Frappucciono!! However, after being banded (and properly filled) I'm usually able to only drink about 1/4 of a small one before I'm "satisfied." Other than that, I can drink almost an entire small Cafe Latte w/skim milk and sugar free vanilla syrup. :cake: Yah for starbucks!! OOOHH! And if you like those starbucks frappuccinos that you can buy in the convenience stations, you should check out the AchievOne Cappuccino Protein drinks. They come in the same kind of bottle and they are Fat Free, low carb and only 120 calories for an entire bottle with 20 grams of protein! I have one every morning for Breakfast instead of going through starbucks! You can get them at www.bariatriceating.com :cake: Kristin
  11. :tea: Hi everyone-I am on my pre-op Liver Reduction diet and was looking for ways to "spice up" the protein drinks. People have suggested adding SF Syrups to their drink-but they are expensive. But have I found a DEAL-if you have a Dollar Tree near you-go visit-they have SF Syrups in the food isle in Vanilla, Hazelnut and Carmel!!! A 12.7 oz bottle for a buck!!! Good luck to all on their journey!!
  12. It's a very long process but teaches you a lot. Normally it's about 16 months if you go through to surgery but this is my fifth time doing this so successful getting surgery is dependant on tomorrow meeting with surgeon but I'm optimistic. I'm at a disagreement with diabetics only getting the surgery option as its been proven before that unless habits change the disease comes back and it's proven by those who have had to come back from previous loss and surgery for more drastic help. Everyone should be equal imho in this regard as I can see discrimination happen Fridge Pickers Wear Bigger Knickers ????
  13. I think it's all a matter of perspective and expectation. I, too, was worried that I wouldn't ever lose weight- that I'd fail with the band like I did with everything else...well, that's just not the case if you follow the rules and do your research. Sure, it takes a while to lose with the band, but so what? Because I have been overweight my whole life, I also tried to set some realistic expectations. I know I will never be a size 8 unless I get deathly ill or have the gastric bypass. Neither of those options sound like a good idea- so I decided that if I ever got to be a size 18/20 (from a 30/32) I'd concider myself a success. Well, here I am! Some people start their banding journey where I am now, but I have the rest of my life to chip away at the rest of my weight if I want. I don't know if this helped or not...best of luck to you! Megan

What To Eat Post Work Out?

I've always been told to eat a protein source after working out so I usually grab a protein shake at the gym.

    excited and nervous

Congratulations on your decision. Nervous is normal, I think. You are making a big decision, and don't let anyone tell you you're taking the easy way out. The band is a tool that helps you control portion size. It is still up to you to eat healthy and exercise. If you are ready to make the commitment, take advantage of all the resources your bariatric team offers. I started going to support group 6 months before my surgery. Even now if I have a question for the dietician I can email her, and occasionally I do. I walk mostly for exercise at a park near home, and I still have a Protein shake almost every day. I take my recommended vitamins(multi, Calcium citrate with D, B12), plus a few others (fish oil and glucosamine/chondroitin and extra Vitamin C). I have gone from a size W22 or 2XL to misses 10-12, or medium tops with small pants. It is worth the effort. I am also off of almost all Rx drugs I was taking before surgery(stopped 2 cholesterol meds, reflux med, and one BP med). I have one BP med and a pain med for my arthritic knees, which are doing much better since my weight loss. I don't need the pain med much at all. Good luck on your journey.

I just don't think it's wise to cut whole food groups from your diet. The reason why they don't want us to eat them in the beginning is because some fruits and most grains are fibrous or difficult to eat. Does your surgeon really say no fruit, no grain, ever? Also, the reason why your surgeon wants you to have a protein shake is so that you get your metabolism revving and get that jolt of muscle healthy protein. You could also eat eggs and lean meat instead if you find that more appetizing.
  17. Hi Bren, I'm feeling better every day. I realized today that some of the gurgling going on in my belly is actually hunger pains. LOL I am not telling anyone about my surgery either. The only people that know are my husband, a friend who also had it done, and my sister. I just don't want the judgment that comes with it. None of my co-workers know except my one friend who I also work with. I have been trying to walk a lot and move around as I am going back to work tomorrow. I don't get to start Protein shakes until Tuesday. I can hardly wait as I am starving. How are you doing? Sarabi
  18. Hey Parker, how are you feeling? Seems we all picked a great week to get on the 'band'-wagon. I understand your not telling anyone. Eveyone knows I've had surgery, just very few have the info on what or why. I didn't find this website until the night after surgery when I was totally freaking out. I'm glad we aren't alone. I got support right away that night, and I come back here very often throughout the day just so I don't feel so alone. Reading the reminders, walk, sip, take it easy no one is exactly the same helps. Ive only had Clear liquids since the surgery, but may try a Protein shake today to regain some energy. What are you doing???? Bren

Finally went to my WLS seminar

Nice first step, good for you. I am with Kaiser as well and I finished the options classes about a month ago, I really learned a lot. My surgery is 7/27/15. You will be able to choose what surgery you want when you get to the surgeons office. He may recommend something but you will have the choice. I am having the sleeve done. Really pay attention in the classes they are important.

    3 Days out, overwhelming depression

Wow, Sunday was interesting.....woke up feeling ok, but then a slow overwhelming drepression/funk took over. It was like a complete take over of my body. I felt like I didnt want to go anywhere or do anything....just sleep. I was tired and weak....just felt like jello. So the family packs up, church as usual on Sunday, and off we go. Afterwards lunch, then a swim party. Oh it finally started to turn around! Started having fun with the kids and the day was officially rolling! Soon after the swim party we were back home again, soon I had to run an errand and when I got back,I started to empty any trash out of my car, so I bent over, picked a few things up and when I stood up, BAM! Dizzy and nausea! I wasnt sure if it was real or not, so I start walking and sure enough, things got shaky! Only thing I can attribute to is all the swimming we did and buring of calories. Still on the liquid diet and maybe just didnt get enough calories in today for the calories that went out.....Not sure! But, later on in the evening, it got better. Had a small protein and green salad and I was fine. Not to mention the depression or funk was gone too. Really dont know what the heck that was about, just maybe in my head I was saying goodbye to someone and hello to someone new? Surgery in 2 days now! Woooohooooo!

    Week Three is almost over....

Congratulations, you are doing great. I am back on softies as I just had my first fill yesterday. I had liquids all day yesterday. Bored, Yes I know the feeling. I do try to switch it up and I have been doing a bite of cooking. I still have to get the protein in. I tried some red pepper soup it was very tasty. Not hot but warmed it was just what I needed. There are people on this site that have recipes listed some are very good. Check them out. Hope all is well. I was banded June 29 I am only 4 weeks post op and feel so much better today. imaluckydog

    OMGz tooooo tight

One thing I noticed when I was too tight was that water was terrible. Protein shakes slid down easier. Maybe this will help until you can get some taken out. Celeste

A true story of protein deficiency

Thanks for the post. It is difficult for me to get in my protein. I wonder if that has something to do with recent tightness I experienced with the band. I wonder if My organs are swollen?

Food that goes down no Problem

I found that canned chicken or tuna goes down MUCH easier than a filet. And you still get your protein. There's also smoothies made with fruit, FF plain yogurt, sweetner (I prefer stevia), and protein powder. I'm sure other's will chime in with ideas
  25. not sure about others, but I was on clear liquids for 2 days after, then "full liquid" which includes pudding, jello, cream soups, milk, and the protein drinks. I thought it strange that they considered pudding and jello a "liquid"!
