  1. Hi Leesa, I am really interested in what your Dr. has to say and in your progress. I , too , have problems with diarrhea and am waiting to be scheduled for RNY after Band removal last yr. I don't know if I can do it ,if I end up with constant diarrhea ,because I already take a med to keep food from moving through my system too fast. If this gets worse, I probably won't make it to the restroom! I had some damage to my pelvic floor with the birth of my last child( almost 12# baby), and worse diarrhea is my worst fear with Bypass surgery. Has anyone else had these problems and overcome or moved beyond the diarrhea stage?

  4. 2 years ago I made an important decision that would change my life forever! I had my RNY gastric bypass 2 years exactly from today. Best thing I could have ever done. I have lost 130lbs and my health is so much better. I can keep up with my 7 year old! I am so happy, but it is getting harder now, but I know what I need to do and stop getting lazy and discouraged!! This is a great journey and I wish the best for everyone!

    Surgery around the holidays

I too am going to have surgery around the holidays... in November. I have been working on losing weight to reach a safe BMI for surgery since the end of February. The surgeon I am seeing requires that you have a BMI of 35-45 before having surgery, so I had to lose 37 pounds before reaching that BMI. But I am here now. I am worried with my surgery being around the holidays because of the hectic pace and busyness of the season.
  6. I'm doing gastric bypass....because of the amount of weight I have to lose and my comorbidities: pre-diabetic, high blood pressure, sleep-apnea. I just feel like I need the malabsorption to get where I need to go. That's my personal choice and my surgeon agrees with me.

    Actual surgical procedure question

I watched a video of a laparoscopic gastric bypass too and you are right, not for the faint of heart! Fortunately, I didn't watch it until after my surgery! My lowest incision is also right above the belly button so no need to tape anything up. I was completely out of it before they did anything to me in the OR, so I wasn't aware of any lifting of my gown, draping or anything that would have embarrassed me.

    May Chat for NJ!!!!

Good Morning! Chris:Who is that beautiful lady? You took my breath away! Thank you gals for supporting me, this first week had it's moments. The children came to visit me yesterday and my big 14 year old actually cuddled with me, something he hasn't done in ages. They are desparately in need of a soft place. But I can't take them home just yet. Last night I went from my first grocery shopping trip and by the time I got to check-out my incisions felt "hot". When I got to the car I called my girlfriend and asked if she would meet me back home and unload -- it was one task I knew would send me over. I promised myself I would not push and taking on the kids at this time would be recipe for disaster. My Mom called last night and she arrived home from Hawaii. She sounded real tired but glad to be home. I worry for her every since her heart bypass and sometimes I think she does too much. I feel better knowing she's here in california. Mom wants to come see me next week and I think she will be arriving on the day of my post-op. It's also the day that Garrett go's off to science camp so I will be plenty emotional and will want to tell her all about waving bye to the yellow bus. Well, my big plans today is to get a pedicure and take a nap. Com'on girls..... check in! :guess
  9. I just had my surgery on the 23rd of Jan. It went very well. Only I keep getting stomach pains. Does anyone get pains? I'm hoping they will go away soon. It can be very uncomfortable even though it comes and goes.
  10. I had my gastric bypass approximately 15 years ago. Something has been happening the past several months and I wanted to see if anyone else has encountered this issue. Of course I am going to get with a doctor, but I thought I'd ask if anyone else has gone through this. It's happened to me three times, and its getting worse each time. For approximately 3 hours last night I had severe stomach pain. It was extremely intense, to the point where I couldn't even stand up. It was a constant throbbing pain, I honestly felt like my stomach was about to tear open. I was also sweating profusely and burping a lot. I would have gone to the ER, but there was no way I could have driven. I felt like I was almost on the verge of passing out. The pain eventually subsided and I basically passed out for a few hours. I woke up very sore and of course exhausted. The past few times, I had thought it was due to overeating, but last night it was the opposite. I had come home from the gym, and was about to eat dinner when it started. Honestly, it actually scared me. Has anyone else been through this or has heard of anything similar?
  11. Since I'm basically a newbie here I'm just trying to wrap my head around all the emotions, frustrations and happiness. I guess it would be nice to be able to talk to others that have been down this path. Voice concerns and questions... What to potentially expect. Etc...

    over sixty seven

I think this is a GREAT idea! I've browsed this board several times, but this is the first time I've posted. 62 (well in a couple of weeks) here! 300 or so lbs. (top was 356.5 a few years ago) BMI of 56!!! This next Tues, I have my 3 appointments, including seeing the surgon. Am SO hoping I'll be approved, (but not counting my chickens before they hatch! =was turned down 2x for gastric bypass due to health issues) as nothing has EVER worked. I've been obese/morbidly obese since about age 5! I DO have diabetes, on insulin pump, AND I have a multitude of other health issues, some of them genetic, some rare. All of which would improve (not to mention quality of life) with even a 50 = 60 LB loss.
  13. I have mthfr and can't take folic acid at all. Was wondering if anyone else found a vitamin for bypass that doesn't have folic acid in it? Such a pain!!!!!
  14. Erica, I also suffer occasionally from hypoglycemia but in my case it is usually easily avoided with diet and on those occasions that my sugar does drop too low, it has been easily rectified by eating something (exactly what does not seem to make much difference as long as it has some sugar). Here is a link to a very recent study from the University of Cincinatti - http://medicalxpress.com/news/2014-03-exaggerated-insulin-response-subset-bariatric.html . And this link refers to the same study with a slightly different approach toward explaning their findings - http://www.healio.com/endocrinology/diabetes/news/online/%7B570bedca-38a7-46bc-8cb9-9a5b97379fb2%7D/islet-function-insulin-clearance-affect-patients-after-gastric-bypass . I would be very grateful if you could share links that you have identified from your research to other sources of information on hypoglycemia following gastric bypass. As they say, "knowledge is power"! Thanks so much!!
  15. After a ling 6months of dieting I have been approved by insurance for Roux-en-y gastric bypass surgery on May 23. I'm so excited that this is finally happening. I know I waited the 6 months but I think that this last month is going to be the hardest...lol!!
  16. Typing this post from the gym this morning. Literally one year ago this morning, I was on the way to the hospital for the band-to-bypass revision... Today, I'm going to run 5 miles on the elliptical... Life has changed and I am so thankful for friends, family, and this community for the support and encouragement along this journey. As I often tell folks, I may have reached my weight loss goal, but the war of the scale and heart remains...always need to focus on maintaining a healthy weight and living life. Moderation is my friend. Binges are no more and emotional eating is always on my mind...... Reflection is key. It's not easy, but the surgery wasn't a magic pill -- just a tool among other tools to help me along the way. Maybe my new birthday will be Jan 21, 2013 instead of my actual birthday
  17. Hello All! I was banded in '09 and was having issues as well as not losing and gaining even being tight. My Dr. want me to convert to either sleeve or bypass (sleeve being his preference I believe). Anyway it was my preference. I was scheduled for pre-op this week and band removal on the 6th of this month. Due to my B/P that's too high, He wants me to get a clearance from my personal Dr. I'm glad I took time to check out these posts while waiting for my appt. b/c I'm finding out that there are some folks that still have to have bypass after being sleeved. I regret that I chose the band over bypass anyway, so even though my Dr. said that I could still convert to bypass if the sleeve doesn't work out, Why not just go with the bypass. Anyone else feel this way? I need help with this b/c my weight is at 215 right now and my diabetes is climbing along w/ all of my other numbers.
  18. I'm also band to bypass and my surgeon also was pushing for me to do the sleeve but I insisted on the bypass and so far I'm very happy with my choice its been a little less than 3 and a 1/2 months and I'm down 64lbs HW 363lbs SD 4/16/13 CW 299lbs
  19. I have told very few people, my boyfriend, a close friend who is a nurse and her husband is having gastric bypass, and 2 of the owners where I work so they know whats going on. I also told a close friend who opinion I really valued, she begged my not to have it done said she heard she knows of 2 other people that had it done and they went crazy, lost the weight and left their husband and kids and took off and went wild!! Needless to say after that no one else will know. When the time comes I will be telling everyone I'm having gallbladder surgery. I'm also a very private person.
  20. Okay, so I had laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery 4/16/14 and the only issues I have had or am having so far are bouts of gas pain head hunger emotional issues from my divorce with food being grossed out by my JP Drain (I get a little queasy when I empty it and cannot wait for it to be gone on 4/23/14) friends and family feeling guilty about eating without me mild insomnia itching at incision sites On the upside, going into surgery, I had severely uncontrolled T2D with blood glucose readings averaging 375-425 (with 3 daily doses of meds helping to lower it to 200-325) and my readings have not been over 150 since the surgery. In fact, my readings over the weekend were between 101-120 with no medication whatsoever! Super excited about that. Also, I'm happy to report that I have had surges of energy that allow me to feel more like myself than I have in years. I'm feeling pretty good right now and hope things continue. I was a bit concerned about what to expect, because I tried to educate myself about worse case scenarios and some of my friends and colleagues had the surgery with a few complications early on. Just wondering if I should count my blessings and continue to be cautiously optimistic or if I should be bracing myself for things to come. I know no one can see into the future, but can things really go this smoothly?
  21. Hi, I had revision from band to gastric bypass on 8/1/13 and I am still struggling getting my Protein, liquids and calories. On a good day, I get the minimum (48 oz liquid 45-60 protein but approx. 500-600 cal). I just feel too full and can't fit anything else in. Getting these amount is a real painful struggle. I did have a recent complication of a hernia with my intestines twisted up and around the pouch. During that whole month of dire pain I was only getting 300-400 calories. I am healed up now, but I still struggle like I did before the complication getting 500-600 calories. Is there anyone else that struggles because they are just too darn full all the time? Oh I also have more pronounced food sensitivities. Most of the time I am in pain from trapped gas and I think about how I can't continue living like this. It's really depressing. I am happy that I am losing weight, but I don't feel successful, because I feel like crap everyday (lack of energy, dizzy, very depressed from lack of calories, and borderline wanting to end it all). Hubby says take it one day at a time, but I don't know if I can anymore. Doc told me to take beano, digestive enzymes and gave me prescription strength antacid. These things don't seen to work well. Please, is there anyone else going through this?
  22. Super interesting thank you! My only co-morbidity was reflux. Interesting that the sleeve would be expected to cure that for 54% of people like me and bypass 63%. I had thought the differences in risks were much greater. I plumped for the sleeve because I knew that in the past when I lost a lot of weight my reflux settled and I thought I was gambling on it settling again. It did, but the gamble and the odds I based it on weren't right.
  23. I think I have almost all my ducks in a row and my surgery is booked for the first week of November. I am wondering about the in-hotel nursing care though, has anyone used the service recommended by SWLC? My husband can't travel with me (has to work/watch kids) so I will be alone in TO. I need to have someone pick me up and stay with me for the night after surgery, and SWLC included a pamphlet for Homecare that I can call. They are $20 per hour plus mileage to the hotel, which is fairly dear considering the amount of hours I will need someone ---- Did you use them? Any tips to minimize this bill? Thanks.

    No one knows???

Hi There, I just joined the group and read your post. My mom had bypass done in 2003. She went through a period of considerable pain during and after eating(way post op). It was to the point she thought se was having a heart attack or something. She went to her regular doctor, and come to find out she had a bacteria infection in the stomach. which had nothing to do with the surgery. She took antiboitic and was better. Maybe they can check you for an infection.

    United Health Care

I was approved quickly also. Paperwork faxed over on Friday morning, was approved following Monday morning. I have been over 300 lbs since 1988 however, and I have been to every one of my yearly physicals. I have been turned down for bypass several years in a row...but vertical sleeve was easy. I too had to do 2 sleep studies psych visit blood work nutritional counseling EKG and approval from cardiologist PCP request letter and all of that took about 2 months.
