    Studying or Reading post Surgery

And I got chickened out and got my surgery moved to November. All this happened cuz of Covid. I was booked initially way before my school work started in May. But unfortunately it got cancelled twice and I landed in Sept, 2 weeks into my program. My school work has numerous assignments and every course has group work submissions (full time 5 courses), so tons of zoom meetings back and forth. Ater contemplating, I finally spoke to the clinic and they were able to move me in November when my semester ends. My new semester starts in January. New surgery date is 16th of Nov. So I'll have ample of time to focus on the recovery. If I hadn't done this, I wouldn't have been able to give my 100% to either of the side. So thank you all of you for responding here so I could the grasp my post Op recovery and what entails. Now I am way less stressed. I was literally freaking out last few days. So thank you again for helping me take this decision. 🤗🤗

    lap and surgery approved

Elless, have you considered a revision? My story is the same as yours (lap band didn't help me lose weight at all, only lost 20 pounds in 6 months, regained it quickly and then gained extra weight) except I resorted to slider foods after I realized the lap band wasn't helping at all. I revised to RNY and I've lost 43 pounds in less than 2 months. It's a total game changer and I'd recommend it to anyone. Skinny3, if you have 100 or more pounds to lose I'd definitely look into gastric bypass!!! It's not what it used to me. About a decade ago (and before) it was an open surgery with more risks but now it's done laproscopically. Definitely recommend it.
  4. OMG I'm 3 weeks post surgery (bypass) and have been having issues with this dry mouth thing too. I've been taking esomeprazole for years and I'm taking much less now so I don't think that has to do with it. I do have Biotene and will use it more often. It's painful! Woke me up a couple of times!

    Alcohol?? 🤔

I also think it's mainly because of the mental impact of drinking. After few glasses, you could lose the knowing of limits, so. Besides, it depends on the alcohol you want to consume. In cases of dry red wine - it's totally fine to drink 1-2 glasses. But beer, sweet cocktails, or even strong alcohol are prohibited not only after a bypass but for a healthy person too. Believe me, you don't want to know what alcohol addiction is or other kinds of it. All of the Scottish Inpatient Treatment Services know me personally (at least they did). I haven't been drinking any type of alcohol for 2 years now.
  6. After my bypass, for about three months, I would get sick and throw up if I ate something that didn't agree with me (like meats, hot or spicy foods, fried foods). I would get an awful feeling of pressure in my stomach and then get the foamies and throw up mostly saliva. One time the foamies and throwing up lasted an entire miserable night. But now I can eat anything I like with no problem. So I wouldn't worry about your stomach turning and the foaming. It happens to a lot of us!
  7. I understand what you are saying. I always called my VSG my sleeve or stomach, not pouch. I can kind of understand the pouch idea with the gastric bypass because things get stuck in our "pouch", which is the size of an egg, and not our stomach. Thank you for your response. I only threw up once with my VSG in many years. Then again, I had a very conservative surgeon who made it 10 ounces instead of the 3 - 5 ounces. I wish I could say the same thing that I never foamed or threw up about my revision to RNY. 😆
  8. Thank you all for responding!! That is one less thing for me to stress about. All this time I kept thinking something was wrong with my new revision because my stomach actually "turned" twice. One person I know in real life scared me and told me that she couldn't throw up no matter what since she had her gastric bypass and something must be connected wrong inside me 😅. I think she had her surgery back in the 90s. Not sure if the procedure changed.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Well, it was for ten days. Today's my first full day with no cheating. I plan to do it. I'm having a band removed then bypass, so I need this pre-op. Thanks for the encouragement! I need it. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. I’m a sleever & I’ve found vomiting is different too. I wonder if it’s because we have fewer stomach muscles as well cause, on the handful of occasions I have vomited, it doesn’t feel like all my muscles are heaving. A win is I don’t have sore muscles after like I used to either. Plus I only need to throw up a small volume of food to empty my tummy. I hate the foamies! I get them if my food is too dry, too coarse or fibrous. Begins with my restriction being more severe, followed by hacking & then spitting up small amounts of that foamy, gunky saliva. Can occur up to an hour after I’ve eaten. My dad was told the same thing about the flattened cola with his chemo. It’s also useful for getting rid of the bad taste & reducing the coated tongue after chronic vomiting with chemo. Best of luck with your continued recovery, @Jacks133. PS - Personally, I’ve never understood the whole ‘pouch’ description thing. Our tummies are exactly the same organ as they were before the surgery. They function in the same way as they did before (maybe a bit fussier). They are only smaller & for bypass have had a little shortcut rerouting to the intestines. They’re still stomachs.

Confused about throwing up (sorry tmi)

Some of us do throw up, some of us foam and some of us do both... I've done both. I've had gastric Bypass and had a lot of times when I did that... It was during the process of when I was learning what I could and couldn't handle.
  12. Thank you for your lovely well wishes. I had ‘no evidence of disease’ in May after finishing treatment in February. My next scans are in November and I’m keeping positive. VERY important to flatten your Pepsi - your stomach cannot cope with carbonated liquid - and get the Max (no sugar) versions as otherwise the sugar will give you dumping syndrome as it will metabolise too quickly…. I have one bottle in the fridge (flattened) and another being flattened on the counter 😂. I keep squeezing and shaking, then letting the gas out. Once the gas lessens I drop a tiny lump of sugar in, and close the top not quite fully… If you do this too soon it will spill over - if you get it right it will de-fizz away nicely. Then when you think it’s flattened pour on ice, and that will finish it off… if you’re not sure stir it with a metal spoon. I keep a glass full in a shelf in the fridge so I’ve always got one ready 😜. I am a determined person.

    Prenatal Vitamins?

I’m talking the Flintstones with iron until my blood work says otherwise. I loved the sunshine brand from the Vitamin Shoppe while I was prego and nursing or just heavy flow. It wouldn’t work for my bypass now.
  14. You will hear all sorts of stories because none of us is exactly the same…. My daughter had her bypass 10 years ago and she can throw up - she also gets things lodged. It’s common to ‘foam’ first before retching. I had my bypass 8 years ago and I don’t get things lodged; I also couldn’t actually throw up for nearly 8 years, but would foam (that would be the first indication something hadn’t agreed with me) and then retch, but not bring anything up. After my first radiotherapy session for cancer (they blasted my whole abdomen) I came home and tried to eat something and threw up and retched for 3 hours until my family got hold of a nurse on the phone and she recommended flat Pepsi or coke…. Must be flat. It worked. It’s been my go-to drink ever since (Pepsi Max Cherry, completely flattened, with ice 😆). Since then I threw up medication also with the treatment, but not since. The important thing is to know yourself. As I understand it the stomach, when it’s very small, is often not muscular enough to actually throw up, but now I know it can be done! 🙄 - not that I wish cancer treatment on anyone… I’m sure you’re connected alright - you also know now that you can get clogged and chewing things properly is really important. I used to foam at the mouth and feel I was going to throw up every time I tried peas in the first year - I think because I didn’t chew them properly and they were rattling round like little bullets… 😜 x
  15. I have read ((and heard from friends who had the surgery) that people with gastric bypass do not throw up, and that their stomach doesn't turn since it's a pouch now. I just ate something that didn't agree with my stomach. and I started foaming. The stoma was plugged, I believe due to a piece of egg due to improper chewing. I'll try better next time. After I spit out all the excess saliva, my stomach "turned" twice and it forced me to empty my pouch. I didn't get nauseated at all, it just kind of happened on it's own but my stomach definitely "turned" both times. Can someone please explain to me if this is common for gastric bypass patients? I'm sincerely confused about it all. I hope I'm connected alright & nothing went amiss in my surgery lol. Thanks!
  16. Thank you, lizonaplane. I was required to eat a low fibre, high carb diet whilst on radiotherapy because of the affect on my stomach, but such a diet is counter indicative with the bypass and nausea and diarrhoea were my daily companions. But I’m through it, and hopefully for good. 👍🏼
  17. Hi everyone, I’m the member of a cancer forum having completed treatment for Stage 3 cervical cancer six months ago. I’ve put out feelers to try and find anyone else who had had bypass surgery (RNY) previously, and have drawn a blank. The RNY meant challenges for me, especially as the cancer had spread to my para-aortic lymph nodes, so my stomach and whole gut were irradiated for 6 weeks. The no-ghrelin effect also returns for gastric cancer patients as the radiotherapy knocks out those hunger hormones. Just wondering if there is anyone else on the forum who has had cancer treatment after their RNY?
  18. This does not sound like dumping syndrome, but I can sympathise. I too find that the blend of solid food with liquid (noodles and soup for example) makes me feel like throwing up, and you get that froth in your mouth. Actually unlike some others here I find that throwing up is VERY hard since the bypass - I think because there’s less stomach muscle to power it. The only time I actually threw up was in the last few months when I was having cancer treatment and my stomach was blasted with radiation… I find a hot wheat bag on the stomach helps to settle it, and strong peppermint sweets sometimes.

    Post VSG Regrets?

Yes, I regret it 100%. Sleeved 5/28/2021. As of today I am only down 18 pounds since surgery. When I tell people that, I always get a list of how it has to be my fault. Medical intervention that you can't really cheat, but it's my fault? I couldn't "cheat" if I wanted to. I don't think genetics, hormones, and age are talked about enough pre-op. My weight loss slowed way down in the years prior to surgery. I'd cut carbs and work out hard and only lose 5 lbs in a month. I thought this surgery would help, it hasn't. My biggest words of advice, IF YOU ARE NOT A BIG EATER DO NOT GET THIS SURGERY! Consider all factors first. My mother, sisters and aunts have been on "diets" since Tab and Jane Fonda workout were a thing and the smallest any have ever been is the 170's (all 5'3-5'5). We're just heavier and hormonal with slow metabolisms. Not horribly obese, but in the 200's with big arms, stomachs, and backs. Unless they've been hiding it for decades, they don't gorge on food. We typically gain 10lbs a year that we just can't lose. That's how we are and how I'll be. I'm getting ok with it. Primary is asking if I'd consider converting to bypass in the future. No thanks, what would be the point. I just never tell anyone I've done this to myself out of sheer embarrassment. Very expensive mistake.
  20. Hello!! Just wanted to update and say it's definitely possible! I started this journey in Oct. 2020 at 311 and diabetic. Lost 45lbs before my March 2021 bypass, no longer diabetic, and today I hit ONEderland. I haven't seen this weight on a scale since 1995! Remember it's a journey - it's not a sprint or a quick fix.

    Food addiction concerns

I am a sugar addict. I had the same concern as you do, and I told my doctor I would prefer the gastric bypass because I would have dumping syndrome keeping me accountable. He said he thought that the hormonal changes that occur with the sleeve would be enough for me, and I decided to trust him. I am only 7 weeks out but so far I don't have those same sort of cravings for sweets like I did before. They still sound good but I don't have this obsessive drive to go out at 10:00 at night while my children are sleeping to buy a candy bar (I never did it but I was tempted to). I think if bypass is available, you may want to do that as it will give you an extra level of protection against the sugar cravings, but I can say that the sleeve definitely helps.
  22. VSG surgery was on 4 January and I am very happy with the progress.  I am just on 30kgs down and within a very healthy BMI.  My clothes fit well, but my skin is pretty nasty saggy - a small price to pay for health and wellbeing.  My hair has finally stopped shedding at a great rate of knots, pardon the pun, and I've just had my first haircut by a lovely lady who has had a bypass.  She really understood my concerns and assured me she can see good healthy growth coming through now.

It's coming out of winter down here in Australia and I'm looking forward to not being as hot and sweaty as usual this summer, and being able to wear a bathing suit at the beach without feeling embarrassed.

    Onwards and upwards 🙂

  23. My stats are very similar to yours - I was 54 at the time of surgery, I'm 5' 1" and my top weight was 250 pounds. I really wanted the bypass too, but it turned out it was medically contraindicated. I got a 2nd opinion and that doctor agreed it was too risky for me. So I had to go with the sleeve. I was super disappointed because I had read that bypass patients tend to lose more of their excess weight. I had the sleeve and it turned out to be really effective for me. I had no complications and I lost all my excess weight. The big difference is, there was an actual medical reason why I couldn't have the bypass. If you're a good candidate for either surgery, then you should be able to choose the one you want. The post-op experience is not exactly the same between the two surgeries and you're the one that has to live in that post-op body. So, maybe get a second opinion and see if there is any legitimate reason you shouldn't have the bypass. If you get the thumbs up, then you'll have to decide whether or not to find a new surgeon. Sorry you've hit this road bump - the good news is, either surgery can be effective, so whatever you decide will probably work out for you.
  24. I wanted a bypass and my surgeon felt the sleeve overall was a better option. I asked to talk with another surgeon in the practice and after all the pre-op tests were done, both thought the bypass was the best for me due to severe GERD and severe asthma. The hiatal hernia helped in the deciding too lol! Sometimes just asking for a second set of eyes in the same practice helps. A larger practice with multiple doctors helps because they do (or should) work together like a team and they respect each other’s ideas. That only helps your health outcomes in the end.
  25. Hi just a quick question I had gastric bypass Wednesday the 18th and I feel alot better but I keep having a tight knot feeling under my right breast and it just feels really heavy.. has anyone had this? Is it normal? I plan to call my surgeons office Monday. It's not painful it's just more irritating because it feels like a tight heavy ball.
