  1. Hello! Iam 12yrs post op gastric bypass surgery at 58yrs young! My advice to avoid bowel problems is to stay away from sugar, sweet dairy products and fried foods!! Drink plenty of Water or green tea, hot or cold throughout the day. Make sure you eat enough proteinto a least equal 60 grams daily and eat at least 3 quality meals daily. Try to eat something within 1 hr. after getting up in the AM. I 've always had problematic anemia, so I try to eat a good rounded diet. I know if I follow this advise I share with you,I would not struggle with the dreaded dumping syndrome or live my life now around bowel issues which I pretty much create and struggle with weekly,Choosing to eat good foods post BS gastric bypass surgery Is very important for bowel health! My bowel problem is ............. I belive that my colon never emptys fully. However it is not diarrhea but not solid either. I deal with seepage quite often. soif you feel you have to go, go as soon as you feel it. If any one has any different advise on this, please reply Hope all is well with you and your journey simplifies life with healthy healing! I also state, I use Miralax to no avail. lol Be strong and stay wise!!!! pre op GBS weight 311lbs today at 235 and bounce that 5lb loss/gain monthly. But I consider myself lucky to have not gained anymore.I am consciencely aware it could happen too easily, so that helps! xxoo
  2. Hi Kimmy2477. My date is the 27th also. I'm getting the sleeve. Really anxious and excited. Can't sleep tonight. Drs first patient backed out so my surgery was moved from 9:30am to 7:30am. I'll have to check in at 5:30am. Probably doesn't matter bc I won't be able to sleep anyway.

Carbs, Fats and/or Calories (oh my!)

Had my surgery on 4/27 so I am almost at my 6 month mark. I am down 125 pounds, but only 95 since day of surgery. I hit a stall every month! I actually only lose weight about 1 to 1.5 weeks out of the month. Now, I may lose 7 to 12 pounds in that timeframe, but that's how my weigh loss has been every month since I went on BC in July. It is frustrating to get on the scale everyday and then some days it says a pound higher. I say, "I only ate 650 calories yesterday and worked out for an hour, how could I have gained weight?" No clue! I don't know of the "honeymoon phase" everyone talks about. I have been working hard 5 to 7 days a week since week 2! I try to stick to high Protein and low carb plan.

    mini binge - anyone else?

I am only 4 weeks out and chose to eat one piece of pizza, small, but pizza none the less. I felt so badly about it I worked to make myself throw up. Now I am all worried bc according to these forums that was worse than actually eating the pizza. I am going to call my Dr office tomorrow bc I am worried about the damage I have done.

Psych Eval in Boston Area? Help!

They evaluated you online? What insurance do you have? I'm just afraid using something online or by phone won't be good enough for his insurance company (he has BCBS Fed)
  7. Does anyone know if you are on a three month med supervised diet (Cigna) do you have to have monthly nutrional classes or meet w a nutritionist three times? Can you follow a "mindful eating & exercise" plan without that? I ask bc it is going to throw my ENTIRE timeline off bc I can't seem to find a NUT who will schedule me in ALL of Orlando for NOV/DEC!!!!

    DO NOT DO IT

Had lap band surgery, 3 days later ended up with blood clots in my legs and both lungs which normally kills you... well I lived... after 4 months finally got the clots to dissolve after multi med changes blood thinners etc... lost 130 pounds with no fills was loving it.. til December 2014 couldn't swallow food water nothing, for 29 days total couldn't swallow anything severe dehydration malnutrition had to be fed by tubes and IVs.. multiple swallowing tests later found out the band caused esophageal dysmotility which is a common complication. Which is basically where the band won't allow any food of fluid to go down your esophagus. Had to have the band removed. Blood thinners for life for the blood clot risk. Still can't swallow like a normal person. Never be the same. Brain damage and nerve damage from lack of fluid, Lots of other crap. Just a nightmare.
  9. As far out as you are from surgery, you don't have to worry about injuring your sleeve at this point. I am on the fence about whether the sleeve really stretches significantly enough to matter. It is never, ever going to be the same size or close to the same size as your old stomach, so at least find comfort in that. I am 2 years and 2 months out and I notice that when I pay attention to what I'm eating, my sleeve works exactly how it should, however I can easily graze my way through way more calories than I should with slider foods. I can't eat an entire bagel because it makes me barf, but depending upon how long it took you to eat that bagel, it is entirely possible to do that at 5 months out. Everyone falls off the wagon sometimes. I had a bad week 2 weeks ago and managed to gain a few pounds, so I went right back to eating how I should and now I'm back to my normal weight. The good thing about the sleeve is that like you said, it works if you work. It doesn't just up and quit on you because you fed it too much food or did something you weren't supposed to. Recognize the problems with your diet, work to fix them, and the sleeve will do its part.

    Tomorrow makes one week!

My heaviest weight is 386.4, my starting weight when I began the VSG journey was 381.6. I had to do a 3 month supervised weight program bc of my insurance. The day of surgery 10/14/15 I weighed in at 348.1, this morning I weighed in at 332.5. I have a bad habit of weighing in daily. It is what it is. It keeps me on track. Im well aware of stalls but I like seeing the numbers go down!
  11. I do plenty of cheese, mostly full fat bc it's lower carb without the additives. I do do the light laughing cow and light cream cheese, the rest full fat in moderation. I love the Sargento ultra thin sliced sharp cheddar! It's so flavorful you just need a tiny bit. I put a half a slice in a slice of turkey with some cilantro or green onion, squirt some mustard on it---I love mustard and have like five different kinds I cycle through---and roll it up! Also love Bleu cheese, goat cheese, Roquefort, Gorgonzola--all those big flavor ones you can use small amounts of and add for a BIG flavor!
  12. @@dewythecat Awww thank you. I was a little bummed bc they rescheduled for Nov 5th but I am ok it gives me more time to prep

    why...

someone asked me why i chose to do this procedure and i might as well say the many reasons why i decided this path for myself... mind everyone i suffer from ankylosing spondylitis.. really bad arthritis in my lower back that affects my joints in my arms and legs to swell and is very painful and fibromyalgia.. also a rsd. which i have 2 herniated disk in my lower back that hit a nerve in my back... ive have always been a lil over weight not too crazy or anything... the most ive ever weighted before i made this decision was 220. and thats because i was first pregnant with my first baby girl in '08.. then i was 180 for the longest and didnt have any problem. then in '11 i gained alot of weight from my son. then i lost a little weight and was 210... then i went off from there. i had my 2nd daughter in sept '13 lost some weight then a year after in december i got really physically disabled... it was very hard for me to work but i tried hard to pull it off but couldnt anymore in mar '14. i could barely walk or anything... so i was stuck sitting alot. even sitting or moving was painful. i gained weight from sitting so much. then my grandfather passed which put me into a depression. and i gained weight from that. and the medicine i take i gained weight from. so about march april this year i made the decision of wanting to have the suregery. i know i cant do it on my own with all my medical problems to lose the weight. so ive talked to my rheumatologist, pcp, and endocrinologist and they believed this would be good for me. and all the research ive done ive made up my mind to want to do it. i have support from my husband and family. but its not the same when they dont know what its like to go through it... my family suffer from hypertension and diabetes.. i dont have it but if i keep going the way i do i would have it anytime soon... nobody really knows on here how much i weigh bc im so ashamed of it.... but im 270 now. ive lost 8lbs in almost 3 weeks. but its like i look on the scale and i look one day its lower then the next it seems to go up a little and i dont feel right about that. another thing is my medicine that i take just to be able to move and do stuff again is killing my immune system so i get sick very easily now.. which its hard w 3 lil ones that are all over the place lol... and im more prone to cancer now.. which ive had a few members of my family had it at an older age but i dont want to die or be sick anymore...
  14. I have found that the dr or clinic/ program likes to verify your insurance coverage and approval before they begin your mandatory weight loss nutrition appts and all testing begins a lot of insurance make you have some period of time to have weight loss usually required by the surgeon not the insurance but the insurance goes along with this as there is a chance u will quit or get tired of all the bs and change your mind I've also found that they will never give a straight answer

  18. I had my RNY surgery 3 weeks ago and I can eat anything I want nothing makes me sick and I am starving all the time. I feel like totally normal I still watch my diet but i still can only eat about 4 or 5 ounces of food. It Scares me bc I want and need to lose weight, does anyone else have this problem or have you heard of anyone else like me???
  19. Hello! I am new to this, and I don't really have anyone that I know who has had the surgery, or wanted to so I have so many questions and I'm hoping I can make some friends here who may be able to help! I started my diet on September 4th in preparation to see a see an obesity specialist --- I am in my pre-approval stage, I saw an obesity specialist on Oct. 2nd who took my weight and set me up with tons of testing, and information. She specializes in using methods other than surgery to help with extreme weight loss. I did not know that when ibsaw her, so I attended a bari-seminar and was assigned a patient advocate who told me the specialist I was working with does not recommend surgery for anyone - which is confusing bc she told me she thought it was a good option for me. Now she referred me to a family doctor and I am set to go see him this Friday Oct. 23 - My insurance calls for Three months of a medically supervised diet and I don't know what date to start from? Or even what the insurance calls for as far as a medically supervised diet? If I choose not to go with Jenny Craig or weight watchers, and just do the plan my Dr. and I agree on - does that count? Or do I have to see a nutritionist once a month too? I have an appointment with a nutritionist, but the dates will not line up exactly! I am so confused, and between the politics of the specialist, the patient advocate telling me that the diet starts the date the Dr puts in his notes and not to worry - I am worried and a little confused! Can anyone help?

    Girls Night Out!

I agree! I haven't had surgery yet (3 days away) but I've already canceled my one week post op plans bc my dr said for the first 3 weeks my only job is to get outta bed, sip, sip, sip, and heal! I think that's wise. Plus you'll still have sutures that are healing. The last thing you want is unnecessary exposure to germs and folks with colds, flu, pneumonia, etc. There will be tons of time in the future you'll want to go out. Your energy level and desire to have fun is going to grow and grow. Good luck with your surgery next week. Thanks Dub

    carbs?

I'm paying $ 8-.10 a pound for grass fed beef at my local grocery store. If you have a Whole Foods I know you have a Trader Joes, they have grass fed beef and bison in the frozen section. I want to say the beef is $8.99 a lb and and the Bison was 9.99 or 10.99. $5 for a 1/4 lb, just say no. Carbs are kind of a hot button topic here, there are different camps. I am 3 months also. I do between 20-30 carbs 20 being the goal, 30 being the rare outlier (some days we want to eat more than others). I do net carbs with veggies and full carbs with processed things, like Quest bars. So if I have a quest bar, those are my carbs for the day. I also try to stay at 20 because my Vitamins have minimal carbs. I wasn't given any direction on macros or carbs except no bread, Pasta or rice. I have used this calculator in the past to come up with macro ratios, this is for Keto, which might not be your thing. http://keto-calculator.ankerl.com/ And I know some other WLS patients that have used it. The nice thing about post WLS surgery is you can cut your calories lower than most people, and not be hungry so something like Keto basically is turbo charged. It isn't for everyone and you have to do what works for you and your lifestyle. I tried just following the lose plan they had for me, but it wasn't enough and I was barely losing, so I change to Keto and not only am I losing better but I have also regained my mental focus.
