    Death?????

I also never heard of any deaths directly related to the band, I'm sure there were plenty of people that died from other health issues that happened to have the band, but that's not the same as saying the band caused the death. I know one man that had a complication and had to have the band removed, but that was the worst of it, and it also underscored the advantage of the band...it can be undone if there's a problem. Gastric bypass permanently alters your digestive system...get a problem and your screwed.
  2. I know im having mixed emotions too. I am not good with pain. I dont like pain meds maybe the liquid iv one lol. The one I will take at home I dont care for too much. I will ask him in the morning if he would switch me. Actually I had the bypass on July 17. Revision was on July 19. He will look to discharge me tomorrow after my primary doctor sees me iamready4this

My prep from lap band to sleeve

Hello and welcome I too had the band lost some weight had issues eating anything healthy. 3 years ago I had the sleeve lost more weight but am having troubles keeping it off. I am now going to revise to the gastric bypass; I guess I should have had this surgery in the first place!! You are doing the right thing in tackling your weight issues and revise to another one. I think the band was a bad idea for most and you will read here that many revise. Best wishes to you

    6 month diet requirements

Cheri, I do think that each plan is very specific and while UHC may have some generalized guidelines, there are still little details that change per plan. I would absolutely TRY to submit any and all records you have to get out of whatever waiting period is needed, but don't pin all your hopes on their requirements being satisfied. I spoke with my PCP because I was concerned about my husband. He did all of his monthly (6 of them) weigh-ins at my PCP's office while I went another route and used my surgeon's office (our PCP is MUCH more convenient for my husbands schedule and MUCH closer to our home whereas the surgeon's office is a good 45 minute drive.) Anyway, I was concerned about my husband getting "denied" based on him seeing them vs. the surgeon and guess what? My PCP told me he had someone that had UHC and they did all the required check-ins and the man was waiting for bypass surgery. They denied him (obv. not sure of the specifics of "why") but in the meantime the man developed diabetes, HPB and high cholesterol. Isn't that awful? My husband was approved without a problem, so that was a big sigh of relief. Also I did check with a WW leader who goes to my Curves. She has been a WW Leader for over 20+ years. The WW leaders do NOT have to be registered dieticians...so I guess it would give UHC grounds for denial. Also our plan stipulated that it was BMI of 35-39.9 with at least ONE co-morbidity (and it actually spelled out which ones would qualify as a co-morb) OR a BMI of 40.0+ or greater, no co-morb needed. I fell into the 40+ category and my husband did too (just barely) but he also had a covered co-morb so he would have been approved even if his BMI had slipped below 40, whereas my BMI HAD to stay above 40+ the entire duration of the 6 months of check-ins. My UHC nurse case manager made sure to spell that out for me that I could NOT slip below 40...I appreciated her honesty. It is ALSO part of the reason that I did not do any type of pre-op diet, of course I could have lost a few lbs since my BMI 4 points above the danger line, but I wasn't planning on risking denial over my BMI!!! Good luck, do not give up, that is what they want!!!

    Surgery date!

Hahha! I think I might break that rule too. In fact, I might just copy that idea completely. Bc I feel like that would be so motivating for me, as I absolutely love clothes. I want to find a nice place to donate my clothes to bc I have a pretty extensive wardrobe and I feel someone could really enjoy them. I also chose to have the gastric bypass. I flip flopped between the bypass and the sleeve.
  6. Hi everyone! My name is Natalie. I will be having gastric bypass on Monday, May 19th. I will post a pre-operative picture to this thread. I can't believe how fast my pre-op time has gone! In December 2013, I attended an informational seminar with my sister to learn more if I would be a candidate for weight loss surgery. My insurance required a total of 4 pre-operative visits. Being a full time nursing, the time has just flown by . Suddenly, it is the month of surgery and I am feeling a mix of emotions. I am beginning to feel nervous due to never having any prior surgeries or hospitalization, however even more excited in thinking of all the opportunities that could open up for me... In my very near future! I just wanted to introduce myself to the community, as I would like to share my journey, positives and negatives, with others! (Hopefully, the majority of it being positive). Do any of you have any suggestions for final preparations? In some threads, I have seen people purchase smaller spoons and plates.. Does anyone have any other ideas that I could consider? Well, hello again. I look forward to talking with you
  7. I am having my lap band taken out and the bypass performed on 1/12. My pre-op liquid diet starts on 12/22. Any suggestions on how I can make it through the holidays??

    Obama Care options

I am a paramedic and in nursing school. Every facility has its own infection control issues. I brought up Mexico to him but he is not on board with it. He is under the impression that it is unsanitary and not an option. I tried to get him to look into a few surgeons there and continuing to do research. I think just like a doctor here research and seeing stats on paper are best. The issue with Mexico is that they are not required by Medicare, Joint Commission to report their infection rates. Some do it as a personal standard, Those are the guys you want to look into. The ones who do not use an outside source reporting on their infections rates and re-portable complications or events need to be bypassed. I am going to continue to work on surgeons both in the US and Mexico, but as hoping he could get insurance to cover it like mine did. He did find a surgeon in Dallas that does it for 8500 but I have not gotten the name from him to research that doc. It seems low for the US.

how many cc's on first fill

I had my first fill last week 9/15, 5ml in a 14ml band. Everything seems fine, I go back for my second fill the second week of November. I guess I'll eat a lot less turkey for Thanksgiving as result

    Sleep Study -- check

I had to do the sleep study because the doctor required it. I ended up doing 2 nights as the first it was a mild case so they did not put on the mask so I had to do another test night with the mask. Of course each test cost $1500. My doctor required 2 week compliance which meant a min of 4 hrs a night with at least 70% compliance. I got my cpap in November. I had surgery Dec 1st and returned my machine by the end of December. I had already stopped snoring with the lost of 20 lbs. My husband's also had a sleep study and I think everyone is diagnosed with sleep apnea so they can charge insurance the machine and supplies. He had his surgery on Wednesday and we returned his machine today. Neither of our cases were severe or life threatening that we really needed a machine. Good Luck and know that unless you have other medical issues most likely you can discontinue at some point when you have lost enough weight.

    Standstill

I have been about 1 1/2 years in this process. At one point I stopped due to a new job and hoping I could do it on my own. I completed an extensive program through the VA to get approved for surgery and there was a delay time and again. I finally got the approval but the surgeon I chose also had requirements, most of which I had already done with the VA. I was frustrated and I was so jealous when people would get their surgery dates. But I think the extra time has been so helpful to me. I feel confident I can make this change because I’ve already made massive changes to my diet and lifestyle. Changes I would not have done without the wait. I would have relied on surgery to “fix” everything. They may think your weight gain is due to your depression and anxiety and want that addressed so you are successful. Jump through the hoop and put the time to good use. Your time will come and you will be better prepared due to the wait. We didn’t gain this weight in 6 months and it’s ok to not be on the fast track. Better to follow the advice and lose the weight and keep it off than to find a way to bypass it and undo the surgery a year from now. You got this!!! My surgery is 3 weeks from today and I feel like my time is almost here. But I still get jealous that people are scheduled before me. Good luck!!! P.S., I’m going to talk to my doctor about seeing a therapist on a regular basis just so I don’t end up undoing my surgery.

    Tacos

I had gastric bypass last October and am still struggling with eating meat. I'm getting very frustrated. I'm going to make some turkey chili using ground turkey, beans, chicken broth and canned tomatoes. Last time I tried this it was rough as heck. This time I'm going to blend the chili before I add the beans and see if that works. I can't stand fish. Tried to eat some tuna last week and promptly threw up the three tiny bites I got down. The chili recipe is James Marusek's. He also has a recipe for an egg drop soup. He has lost all of his weight and has maintained for a long time. Do a search for him. He is very smart and very generously shares his information and experience. I've also had advice about using a crock pot or other slow cooker for cooking meats. Keeps the moisture in and makes the meat very tender. I'm going to google recipes for that too. I'll let you know when I come up with something good.

    super nervous! !

I had to do the sleep study with getting the band. My sleep apnea is bad and makes me extremely tired so I had no problem falling asleep plus the rooms look like small hotel rooms but then they sick sensors all over your head. They said in an eight hour period I maybe get 3 hours of sleep. Not fun... I won't have to redo it for my band to bypass because they already know I have it.

    100 lbs

Haven't replied in a long time and I don't have any pictures yet that I can post but had my surgery April 10, 2013 over the last year I have lost 132 lbs. I have been through the good comments and the negative ones. I used to tell people I had gastric bypass surgery now I just tell them when asked that I made a life change. I tell them when asked what kind of diet am I on, a meal replacement for breakfast with 2 meals of meat and vegetables, fruit and protein bars as my between meals snacks. Am I perfect, no I have eaten somethings over the year that I knew better but what I managed to do was keep these cravings under control by willpower that i never had before surgery. I have been termed as not diabetic any longer no shots, or pills. Colesterol is great all my labs are good to perfect. Taking less than half of the medications that I was previously on. My surgeon commented to keep up the good work.

    Hiatal hernia

Hi there! Yes, your doc should be able to take care of it during your bypass procedure. When I had lap band put in several years ago I had a hiatal hernia repaired during that surgery, and I had another one repaired this time during bypass. makes healing take a little longer, but you'll be no worse for the wear!

How many have lost 200 pounds...

Hi, I am also new to this site and am really glad that I found it. All the success stories are of great value to me as I start this journey. So far I have seen all the required doctors except one the cardiologist... My surgeon said that once I pass everything he should be able to schedule my surgery with in a month and half. I am scared and excited. I attended a support group meeting last week to talk to people who have had the surgery. I am for some reason on the fence about the lapband vs gastric bypass. The only reason I am on this fence is because of the amount I have to loss... and the time it could take to do it. Reading hear that some of you have been able to loose so much in relatively a short amount of time is insperational. Please keep telling your stories because they are helping me soooo much. How many have lost 200 pounds...

I was banded on 02/07/08. My highest weight was 402. I was 375 at surgery and now today on my 7th month bandiversary I'm at 297. I want to get down to around 150, but I am so excited to finally be below 300 for the first time in 11 years. My MD is very happy with my success so far. I was so scared of the bypass, but was considering it because I was afraid of not losing enough with the band. However, with 78 pounds down in 7 months, I am more than satisfied with my band. I think it just depends on how determined you are to lose. I truely believe that you can lose as much weight as you want with the band. It is an awesome tool. Best of luck to you all.
  18. by "second surgery", do you mean you have a second stricture that needs to be stretched? That's not unusual. I had to go in twice to get mine stretched - after that, I was fine - never had problems with them again. About 5% of bypass patients get strictures. The PA at my bariatric clinic said it's the most common complication - and it's an easy fix. They almost never happen once you reach the 3-month-post-op mark, so it's doubtful you'll have one again after you get this one stretched. you'll be able to eat more the further out you get from surgery. It's really just the first few months that you have certain food restrictions and can only eat a tiny amount of food. you should feel a lot better once they stretch out the stricture - and it's unlikely you'll have another one after this.
  19. My starting weight was 330 in November 2014, morning of surgery 4/6 I was 299, now I am 248. I have had upper back pain constantly. I'm starting to stregthen my back, but as anyone else had problems with their back since surgery. I carried most of the weight in my belly It also doesn't help that I hunch over at work.
  20. I am also scheduled in November. I plan to take 3 weeks off. Give or take a day or 2 if needed. I have plenty of time available and will also use FMLA. I want to make sure I am well adjusted and not sleepy or weak. Nothing is worse than trying to put on a happy face in front of customers when you dont feel well. Plus I have never taken any time off so my work is ok with me being gone.
  21. What ever you decide, make sure you do your research. Going to a doctor that you have to fly to gives you the same followup issues as those banded in another country. Who ever you chose, make sure you have a doctor locally that will do your fills/emergency care and any other followup you need. I was Banded in Mexico, but I have a local doctor that I spoke to before surgery to do followup. I have a local fill center for fills. The nutrisionist at Dr. Rumbauts office and I still keep in contact via email. So far, the only thing that didn't work for me was the support group I signed up for at the local hospital was for bypass patients. I am not telling you to go to Mexico or not to a certain doctor. You need to do RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH and make the decision that is best for you. Good luck.
  22. Okay, Went to my primary today and he's a pretty busy doctor and guess what? I'm his first lap band patient, okay only lap band patient. I went to discuss possibly going back on Metformin again because I had gained back all the weight I lost prior to surgery (25 lbs). I don't know if I broke my ticker or not, I think it's a little depressed though:huh2:. After speaking with the diabetes group here and also the PCOS group some thought that the Metformin might help but as my doctor pointed out when I was on Metformin prior to surgery it didn't affect my weight so why would it now. He wrote me a script for complete blood workup though. Anywho  tomorrow morning I meet with my surgeon for the second time since my surgery 8/07 and will be discussing my issues/probs and see what we can come up with. If I hear try another fill I may . My doctor thinks that since I still have the weight, the diabetes, the thyroid prob, PCOS, the sleep apnea that maybe I may possibly be a candidate for a reversal and/or gastric bypass. I wish he would call the surgeon and tell him to:smile2:. I had those few fill problems in the beginning with no fill because they thought I had the small band and then the 10 hour vomiting festivis (sp, from Seinfeld) and that was on 3/11 and haven't seen the surgeon since. He's a busy guy too and it's hard to get to see him for an appointment these days. So I'm going to ask for a flouroscope (sp) or whatever they can do to actually take a looksee at it in case it was damaged in some way or moved. Not that was the only time I have vomited but it was a major event.:tongue_smilie:(that's the closest one I could find to looking like it was getting sick). So wish me luck tomorrow, I've been a bit  for a while and don't want to give up but it's very depressing:sad::sad::sad::sad: and it's also:blushing: embarrassing. I feel like people must think I'm such a reject because I went through all of this to get the band and totally F'd it up!:frown:. I wish I could be like the rest of you and go through this with flying colors, I didn't expect a quick loss but I expected a loss and only gained:sad:. So anyway I talked long enough and I'm sure you all are pretty  so I'll go now, thanks brandyII.

Should I ask to get a removal?

heartfire, I have had restriction, my first was three months after surgery and then I had them but it only worked on the Proteins etc... and still crave the sweets. When I exercise for some reason I get hungrier. I guess part of it is PCOS and part head hunger but because I have no problem eating sweets they go right through the band. My metabolism is very screwed up anyway so even if I don't eat a ton I can look at cake and I might as well have eaten it. chocolate, Cookies, chips, cakes, goes right through the band and I guess I should have had the gastric bypass because then I would have had "dumping" and would have avoided them possibly. My vomiting was because they thought I had less saline in the band and put in one too many cc's. Now I know to go to the doctor right away if you have to pull over into a church to vomit Water on the way home! I was vomiting my own saliva at home for ten hours, no water, saliva, and called the service and a surgeon met me down at the office and took some fill and that's when she found out the nurse wrote down the wrong amount and hence put too much in. I have also vomited like a lot of people if they ate Protein too fast or something else that needs to be eaten slowly and chewed well but I tend to be better at that now. After I gained the first ten pounds I asked the fill nurse if I could just go on a liquid Protein diet again for a while to lose it but she said no I had to get the fill and eat the protein and stretch out my pouch. Anyway that's why I made this appointment with my actual surgeon because he always told me because he knew I had problems sometimes with the fills I got from the nurse that he would do them for me it's just harder to get in to see him. I've never had a stomach bug since the lap band, thank God! and vomiting is so much easier now because it comes from a higher place, well okay it's different and not as gross how bout that! I'm sure you'll do fine, most people do, so good luck to you, I'm just in a holding point right now so that's about it, thanks brandyII.
  24. I had my lap band surgery November 1, 2010 and things went great for a while. I bounced back from surgery quickly and had very few issues adjusting to banded life. From November until the following March/April, I dropped about 65 pounds...then I hit a wall. It was like a light switched and I stopped losing weight. To date, I have never had any issues throwing up. If something does get very uncomfortable, I can drink a little Water and it goes right through. There were two surgeons in the office I went to, but the one who performed my surgery moved to another state to start a new practice. Unfortunately, the other surgeon doesn't like the band because he's a big advocate for bypass. Since I felt like I could eat anything, I went to him to see about getting a fill. They use fluoroscopy to actually see how restricted you are and he wouldn't go any tighter because it "looked" tight enough. Of course what it looks like doesn't make any difference in what it actually does to help restrict food intake? After a year of getting nowhere and gaining back a little weight, I drove to another city to get filled in another office. They have added Fluid twice, but I can still easily eat what I want with a little drink if the bite is too big. If I take smaller bites, I probably wouldn't need the drink at all. I'm very frustrated because I'm two and a half years out and I'm almost back to my starting weight. I feel like I had no issues when I started because everything worked and I was moving in the right direction. Now, it's like I can't stop since I know how to cheat the system and it's so easy. I've considered going back and converting the surgery to the bypass or sleeve, but what's to say I won't end up in the same place again? I don't feel like I got very much support from my surgical center to begin with and I'm sort of flying solo on this. How do you get past the mental struggle of knowing how easy it is to cheat and making the right choices? Is it even possible to start over again?
  25. I joined the forum november 2010, never posted, just reading alot. I had my sleeve november 15, 2010 and so far i am down 97 pounds. I have had no problems at all. healing was a breeze, I have adjusted to my new diet and eating habits just fine. I excersise alot and feel great. I am sorry for those that are still struggling after surgery, maybe i am an exception. The sleeve was a very good decision for me.
