  1. Rev Me Up!

    A first for me

Hello! There are a few items that or OK at fast food restaurants. Also, maybe you can stock up at the grocery store before your return trip. Most delis have a veggie plate with cut up vegetables and a sinlge serving of hummus. Back in the day I used to get a hamburger and salad from McDonalds - throw out the bun and cut the patty onto the salad and eat it. Very low carb and may get you through a bad situation if drive through is the only option. Good luck!

    Tired of feeling sick!!!

I am so sorry you are going through all of this. In addition to talking in detail with your surgeon I would suggest your mental health professional too. When starting out I was told that the band is a tool that can really help you lose weight but it is not a magic bullet. In order to feel well and be successful you must follow the rules. One is no drinking with meals. This was very hard for me too but it is a must. If really necessary just take a sip. You could be feeling sick because you are eating and drinking too much. I have dry heaved twice since being banded. One time was after the gym when I downed a bottle of water in minutes. Finally after an hour I dry heaved. It took a couple of hours to feel better. The second time was when I went out for dinner. I know I ate too much and did not chew well ( and yes that is a very important rule, chew chew chew and than chew some more !) I felt terrible for hours. Please try weaning yourself off the sweet tea. Calories do count. Perhaps you could cut back and dilute it little by little. I was very addicted to diet soda and had to give it up cold turkey because of the carbonation. Now I don't miss it. In fact the other day I took a few sips and didn't like it. I drink water with lemon and Ice tea with sweetnlow. Also remember your protein. Eat your protein first. It helps you feel fuller longer. I wish you good luck and hope you feel better soon.

    Losing Hair...wow!

Protein, protein protein! I can suggest Gold's Power Bars that you can purchase at Walgreens. About 200 calorie and 23 grams of protein. I typically have one at Breakfast or between a meal. They are soft and go down great in the morning with coffee. If you have superb restriction have half for breakfast and the other half an hour later. Your hair should come back once you replace what your body was missing.

    Gallbladder & Lapband at 64??

Brian, 5 years ago I had open heart surgery; 2 years later I had my gallbladder removed; and now I'm looking at the band. At the time I had my gallbladder out I haden't heard about the band or I most definitely would have done both at the same time. By the way I'm a 63 yr. old female. Age is just a number. I had durabond and steri-strips for my gallbladder and was up and around the same day. I came home the same day as a matter of fact. I had little pain and I can eat anything I want. I personally think given our option I wouldn't hesitate to have both done at the same time. Why get cut twice? It makes no sense. They are both laparoscopic surgeries. I'm not sure where you got the Medicare info if it was Medicare but it is gastric bypass that they don't want to do after 65. As of right now Lap Banding isn't even covered, although it probably will be by the first of Jan. Regardless, we will have to pay what Medicare doesn't. All the surgeons I've consulted have told me that. You on the other hand might get the gallbladder surgery paid for and the anesthesia and OR. That would be a great help to you I'm sure. This is just my opinion, but trust me you aren't going to miss the gallbladder and while they are getting it out let them band you. Good luck to you.

    Road Trips

I have a 3 day road trip coming up. We will be in restaurants or with relatives for breakfasts & dinners. What do you pack for stops along the way? I am taking protein drinks, but I don't know what else will travel well, as well as work to keep my energy & protein levels up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Streched Pouch...

Missy is right I'm afraid. I honestly don't think I'm in the green zone yet and I'm 10 months post op, not sure how much I have in my band, sorry but some days I can eat chicken and some days I can't, some days I can eat eggs and some days I can't, same thing with toast. 2 days ago I tried eating pulled pork BBQ and either ate too big of a bite, didn't chew enough or the stringy mess just slid down but I got stuck BIG time and ended up sliming, and then vomiting up everything I ate, a forceful vomit, not PB'ing which was not good for me at all. Am I afraid of trying BBQ that I have left in the frige, no, I will try it again but will be mindful of cutting it up into tiny pieces and chewing, what has really helped me is what someone else posted on here not too long ago, chew and say the alphabet. Most of my food intake is healthy choices like chicken, fish, oatmeal, cereal, tuna, cheese quesadilla grilled in a nonstick skillet with low fat cheese and for dessert greek yogurt with fruit on bottom or fresh fruits. It just so happen the other day I was craving pork BBQ and got some and well that night it didn't agree with me. I try to stay away from chips because I can't stop at one, however I'm a popcorn freak and I will eat that once a month as a treat but only a little. Be a little more creative in your food choices. Chili is good, loaded with protein, actually I love Wendy's chili, I get their small and eat it and its all I can do to eat that amount. However with that said when I go to Cracker Barrel and order a bowl of beef stew I can pretty much eat the whole bowl, go figure, I'm sure that is more than a cup worth which is what we are suppose to go by, eating 1 cup of food at each meal or at least by my surgeon's directions. I wish you well and good luck, you can do this.

    Streched Pouch...

I agree with everyone!! Woohoo! it is not often that everyone is agreement on the board. But it is important that you eat your protein and stop eating those sliders. A couple chips and salsa is okay, but eating a bowlful and not eating anything else is dangerous. You need protein, and you should not be vomiting everytime you try to eat. See your surgeon and nutritionist ASAP for advice on what to do. Best wishes, Karen

I hate, hate, hate having depression:(

You aren't rambling so don't worry. I am glad you are going to see a Psychiatrist as a GP isn't equipped enough for all of the different med options out there. My sister found out in her mid-forties that she is Bi-Polar and she is doing well now on meds. Just know that you are never alone with this disease and don't ever feel or let anyone else make you feel inferior. Taking meds for mental illness is like taking meds for high blood pressure, it's to help a medical condition. Good luck to you

    good morning foods

I do yogurt or oatmeal. I am pretty tight in the morning and "real food" is usually not an option. I have managed a turkey sausage link here and there but that's not too often. We just returned from Disney and I took protein shake mix with me and ordered a skim milk and had a shake. I have also discovered that egg salad works well but is high fat and cholestrol, so I try to avoid it. I have also eaten grits, and the occasional turkey or chicken salad with wheat crackers. Also most places have a "diet plate" usually half a cantalope filled with cottage cheese. Last time I was in Mexico I lived on fruit smoothies and that was preband. ~Mandy
  10. I just made my first Protein balls and they were DELICIOUS a great way to have a "Dessert" and yet not feel guilty about having one of them because it's healthy. I altered the recipe I found and made it a vanilla-orange like flavor. Best thing of it all is no baking is required!! Kitchenaide is best to be used but otherwise you just need a wooden/really strong spoon 1 cup Almond Butter (called for Peanut Butter but almonds are healthier) 1 cup Agave (you can replace this for honey as well) 5 scoops of vanilla (or vanilla like) Protein powder 3.5 cups old-fashioned oats 1 tsp vanilla extract Shredded coconut Orange extract added until taste is reached Milk added (not a whole lot) for consistency Added all the above to kitchenaide (except the coconut) and then rolled them into balls and coated them with coconut. Refrigerated overnight, and keep them refrigerated to keep the consistency right. Made 27 balls and I figured it out it was about 167 calories per ball and about 6-8 (depending upon how much milk you use) of protein per ball. Also bought BSN's Syntha-6 peanut butter cookie protein powder that is delicious in milk or Water both. I'm thinking about trying that protein powder next for these and replacing the almond butter for peanut butter with the peanut butter cookie protein powder. Yum.

    Best fiber to take????

I currently use benefiber. It disolves in liquids really easily so I just mix some in with my protein shake (unjury) or my husband's ice tea or whatever. You honestly can't tell its there. I've been taking fiber for years-- its good for the digestive track ( I have a minor case of IBS and it really helps with that and I don't get enough in my diet without supplementing it.

    Best fiber to take????

Hi! Protein is what will keep you feeling full the longest. How close are you to getting 60 grams a day? This web site was recommended as a good way to track what you are eating so you can be sure to get it all in. Click here: FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal Also, it is not uncommon for the first fill to not last very long. I was told it is often absorbed in part and to view it as "priming the pump" for future fills. As far as fiber goes, (your original question! ) I have joined the ranks of those who follow the ways of Tired Old Man and worship at the holy altar of Shredded Wheat. Best Wishes, Jo Ann

    Esophageal spasm

Room temp protein shake starts the internal cha-cha. I drink a small cup of something warm, like tea, then I warm my shake a little in the micro or cut it with a little hot coffee. I can do fluids with little trouble, and I am not hungry until the pouch relaxes either. It is just a pain. Thanks ladies for the quick responses!

    Lap Band Removal

Well I got the band removed. :-( I was upset and cried as my amazing dr offered other options. I had to stand my ground & go w my gut. Having my band slip & hiatal hernia repair was not in my plans---& I never wanna go through this again. I know chances slipping after a slip is more. I have 3 kids, and decided I can't go through the uncertainty again. However, she won't be seeing the last of me. Her office offers nutritional/med help w/o surgery. I'm getting right on board as soon as I go back next week for my checkup. I can't wait to see my personal trainer & gym again, but have to wait a few weeks. :-( Thx for listening & offering support & advice!
  17. Hello everyone, this is my first time posting and I am doing so because I just need a smidge of reassurance. I am in my 7th week since surgery, and I am having serious issues with eating and I have read some older posts from people like macmadame who went through the same thing as I am back in 2009 but I was just wondering if there are any more recent sleevers who are struggling as I am. I am NOT interested in food what so ever. I can get my liquids in fine but not food or Protein shakes. Why, because I get such a full feeling so fast that I am uncomfortable and well, beyond the full feeling. I do not vomit, but even after two bites, I could call it quits. MacMadame described it in a post as not being depressed about the feelings, but pissy and she could not have said it better. I am pissy. I have talked to two people that work with my doctor who say that this is normal, it takes longer for some people to lose the initial extreme restriction. Could take 2 - 6 months even. SERIOUSLY!!!??? Anyone else struggling to get their protein and/or food in general in in a day because they have no desire to eat and it makes them feel icky? I want to say nauseated, but it's not to the point where I get sick. I dread getting up each morning practically because I know that I am starting another day of trying to eat without feeling like crap afterwards. Please tell me there are others out there who have experienced what I am going through and that it will get better because I feel like I could crack. Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

    Wine and Celebrations

I am in the process for getting my surgery date and I get to meet with my surgeon for my first consultation in a few weeks. I've been researching lap bands now for about a month and I am pretty comfortable with the idea and lifestyle it will lead to. I've tried liquid diets before and I've done insane 21 day all veggie and just whey protein cleanse. I know how to restrict - I really should have a PhD in diet and exercise by now with all the facts that I know. I just keep gaining things back because I love to eat a LOT. My question is - What do I have to permanently give up, food wise? Besides eating low calorie/low fat (which is something we should all do anyway, right?), are there permanent restrictions on certain foods? I love to go wine tasting with my husband a few times a year. Can I do this on lap band? I also love to travel and it is hard to imagine not being able to try things abroad. Granted, I've come to the realization that I'm not happy having all the food that I want in the world right now, so why should I be worried that eliminating things will make me more unhappy. I just want to prepare myself for what I'm getting into with my future cuisine options. Thanks for all the advice in advance!
  19. Relax and calm down. Everyone gets the jitters before surgery. I only lost 8 lbs pre op and all was good. The surgery is really not that bad t all. Just eat what you can and don't eat the eggs and cottage cheese if you cannot tolerate it. You can have some Peanut Butter maybe on a rice cake and try the high Protein Soups. They helped me get thru the pre op and post op diet. One day at a time and you will succeed. Hang in there! Good Luck! CAT
  20. I don't understand why you would be miserable on your wedding day given that you could be almost a year out. I felt amazing after the first 3 months and at less than 3 months, I didn't feel bad, just not as great as now. Think about all the dress options you'll have.
  21. Have you called your doctor? The only place I had any sharp pain was my left mid quad. My doctor said most pts hurt there. However what you are describing sounds bad. I've never heard of having the option of removing the portion of the stomach. What were the risk/benefit ofc doing that?

    Home Sweet Home

Congratulations on your surgery, Bob. Heather and I had ours done and we are back home and doing fine. Hungry as hell but fine LOL! JK I'm not really all that hungry but my stomach does an awful lot of growling. No fill for 4-6 weeks (healing process yanno) The liquid diet isn't all that bad and it's only for a week for us. We can have yogurt, Soup, veggie juice, Jello, fruit juice (not orange or pineapple), and broth. Soup At Hand Creamy Tomato went down fine for Heather but I'm sticking mostly to the broth. I did add some V-8 juice to it yesterday. Also, we have had a couple high Protein shakes, and a high protein juice drink (Boost). I read where someone said the high Protein Shakes can cause you to have gas but I chewed a couple Gas-X to be safe. Haven't had any problems so far. Good Luck with everything Linda Banded 2/20/2004 Dr. Arturo Rodriguez, Monterrey MX 275/268.5/minigoal: 200:p

Maggie - I am sorry to hear about the leak. When can they fix it? Try to stay to the Proteins and you will stay full longer. I should practice what I preach but it's the truth. Good luck and keep us posted.
