Just wish I could make a decision!

best of luck with whatever you decide any WLS can and does have complications but not always and any WLS can have success and not so great success for various reasons....results will vary ....whatever you get, do the best you can and get well...
  2. As has been stated before - the experts are suggesting a particular procedure for a reason - and particularly for you. Its always healthy to do your own research and your own analysis - I know I did. Lots of it. If you're worried about the suggestion made (thinking there could be alternatives/better out there), ask more questions of your medical team. Get them to substantiate to you personally why they have suggested what they have and not another procedure like gastric balloon, plication, duodenal switch, sleeve, hanging butt-naked from a tree. But and again as has been stated before by LL, you have a whopper of a condition that should not be considered lightly. Consequently and if it was me? I'd be looking for procedures proven to improve that condition in the quickest amount of time possible. If it helps clarify your mind, draw yourself a pros and cons list of each surgery available (as you have been informed, there are more than 2), and how each of them would specifically impact upon you. You could also break it down into categories for example of a) post surgery down time post surgical up-keep c) long term prognosis on conditions of concern d) surgical risks e) average weight loss f) mortality/complication rate g) Vitamin deficiency h) dietry requirements (short and long term), i) impact on life/family, etc If you start working along those lines, analysing the things that matter to you most (and of which are most important medically to your doctor, too), you will eventually generate the answer you need. You could also take that list into your doctor when you go in for your next chat. I did. Blew the buggers away with how comprehensive I'd been. (Not surprising considering how anal I can be!) We all know how confusing it can be. Crikey, I must have read every academic journal available, but I got there in the end. The only problem after making that decision was taking the deep breath required to walk into theatre - knowing I was electing to get sliced and diced (yeah, sorry, I'm a bit gruesome like that!) Through all of it though - and forgive the cliche, however repetitive yet true - I wish I'd done it years ago. If you have any questions, feel free to ask away. There's a lot of knowledge on this thread and in these forums - about all the procedures. Hopefully the answers you require will be balanced, impartial, accurate and more importantly, relevant funny! (only kidding) You got this!
  3. personally I wish people would stop bashing one or the other wls.. they all have drawbacks. I know people like to have a contest to see how they have the best wls but honestly it gets old . The lapband has been very successful for many people. There are veterans on here who have lost hundreds of pounds and are living a healthy life. There are people I know who have had the bypass and are doing fine. The success of each depends on the patient. I have people in my support group that have had complications and issues with the sleeve and others who have done fine. so please people it's not a contest and if you can't just say I had "such and such" and I am doing fine without bashing or criticizing others decisions than don't say anything. It gets tiresome and frankly that is why many people quit posting and quit visiting this site.
  4. Well i was a little tight before i had surgery, so band doc suggested 1mls unfill b4 surgery which worked perfectly. was able to eat almost anything which i thoroughly enjoyed, after so much surgery i felt i needed to treat myself .. the compression garments i have are supplied by the hospital but are US made from a company called Marena - they make the best compression garments but they can be expensive .. the website seems to be down at the moment for me in the UK but u might have more luck in the US http://marenagroup.com/ - 60k - Cached i have the long sleeved compression garment for my arms and the long legged version with high waist for my 360 degrees abdominoplasty and my body lift .. my legs are swollen as hell due to the disruption to the lymphatic system but this is normal i am told, i am also wearing compression stockings to help this and to help avoid DVT. To be honest i had more trouble recovering from a caesarian lol I have made sure i take my multivitamins, drink orange juice and eat fish and chicken to help with the healing, my PS is very keen on natural type help and really pushes the healthy food to help healing. I have a lot of healing to do and am 2 weeks post op, the scars seem to be healing well, PS is very pleased with the progress and given i am nearly 58 yrs old i could have had a lot more complications than i have so far ... Food is a comfort so try to eat healthy but eat well, and make sure u take your pain meds if u need them. I havent had a lot of pain, it was more soreness and being uncomfortable ... and be prepared to rest a lot, u need to rest to heal so dont rush things at home and take your time to heal properly. feet up when u can and just pamper yourself : good luck and I wish you a speedy recovery ...

    Gastric bypass or Lap Band???

First, congratulations on being lucky enough to have insurance pay for either procedure. . .secondly, the choice is strictly yours. The band or gastric bypass is a personal choice. . .however, i've seen a lot of folks have a lot of problems with the RNY. . .infections causing tons of hospitalization, increased depression (hope your insurance can pay this if it should happen) higher mobidity rates (one person I know died 2 weeks after having it from complications - sorry) But again, the choice is definately yours to make, your the one who has to live with it. . . Good luck and the best to you!
  6. I had my surgery on Aug. 27th. So glad the stress of that is behind me. What helped me decide was that if I didn't lose wt. I was going to have changes in my life - like all the complications from Diabetes- don't fool yourself this will practically kill you - I'm a nurse and all nurses fear diabetes as we have seen how it destroys the body. So I decided that I would rather undergo changes now to my lifestyle and take the risk of surgery - which I felt was small for a huge benefit in a short time. Looking better and doing all the things with my family that I couldn't being obese seals the deal. Its normal to question a big decision just make sure you really understand the risks of staying obese and be realistic if you can lose wt on your own and keep it off. I am finaly feeling so good -its been 2 weeks almost post-op- and as I am so excited for my future. I have no regrets. Find a very experienced surgeon and find a bariatric center of excellence - that is important. Good luck.

    LDS Bandsters

I'm a future bandster and also LDS! excited to discover this thread. For personal/financial reasons we have decided not to disclose to certain family members who own the small business dh gets insurance through that I am having this done. They tend to be controlling. We know from experience they would go as far as to cancel insurance for us if they felt I shouldn't get this done and that WLS is something they are extremely opposed to (also it does not affect the price of health insurance they pay as we are part of a large co-op). Keeping this to ourselves is something we plan on doing for long term, both for fills or any other complications that may or (hopefully) may not occur. This means I will be keeping it from people in our ward as family members are also part of our ward. Has anyone here kept the surgery private? If so how do you do that without lying? I don't know if its possible. I had a heart procedure this year and I am worried if I say I'm having a "medical procedure" people will assume that is what it is. Any advice welcome. Warren Jeffs is an evil evil man. I grew up around Polygamists in rural area out West. They are a strange group of brainwashed people. It is awful that they have any affiliation with the name of our church. I feel sorry for the children and those who are brainwashed to participate in a community full of abuse and secrecy. I feel as human beings we are given the light of Christ to discern. Something on some level has to feel "off" for them and this must mess them up for life but being so isolated I'll give them that. There is something to being "brainwashed" but I feel any 50 year old man should know better then to "marry" and rape a child. On a good note look at all the families this may change for the better. At least I hope it does. As far as being sad about their temple I have to say I have no feeling that way. There is absolutely nothing sacred about a "temple bed" double ick.

    Wondering

Look him up on health grades. Ask about attending a support group where his patients go, you will meet people and find out the real deal. Not sure what stories are scaring you - but it is a serious surgery and there is a risk of complications. If you can lose weight and keep it off without surgery - that is safer. Me, I couldn't do that and weighing 300+ was killing me slowly so I was willing to take the risk. Sleeve surgery has slightly lower complication rate then the gastric bypass however. I picked a surgeon with lots of experience, and with a good reputation and then had the good luck too - no complications. It is a risk though.
  9. I've gotten freaked out before every surgery I've ever had, and I've always sailed through just fine. Don't get fixiated on the horror stories, as those are rare. They seem more common than they really are because people are more likely to post when they have problems than when they don't because they're looking for support or advice. Of course, those things do happen and it's good to be aware of the possibility, but again, they're pretty rare. the mortality rate on RNY is 0.3%, and it's even lower for sleeve. So you have a 99.7% chance of not dying - which are excellent odds. Major complications are also rare. Many of us don't have complications with these surgeries - and for those who do, most are minor and "fixable". I also contemplated surgery for 10 years (maybe longer), and I came to the conclusion that I had a much greater risk of complications from staying at over 300 lbs than I did with having the surgery. you always have the option to cancel or postpone if you're not ready - but I did go through with it (obviously) and am so glad that I did.

    Doctor Confusion

I noticed that you were thinking about going to Mexico for your band. I know lots of people have a great experience there and save lots of money. If there are no complications, it is a great deal. But have you thought about what happens if there is a complication? Do you think that an insurance company would cover the expenses for complications of a foreign installed medical device? From my experience from working at a weight loss clinic, I would say most likely not. I’m all for going to Mexico. God knows I am crazy about Tijuana tacos! My dad had major dental surgery there and so forth and it was satisfactory I guess. The thing is that if you want to save money somewhere, why go el cheapo (if you will) with your body? Take the time to save up the extra money so you have the insurance that someone will be able to take care of you that isn’t a three hour drive across the boarder. By the way, I work at a place that sees patients that does work on people with foreign bands and they come in at least every couple weeks. Granted I only hear about the bad examples and not the people that have had good experiences in Mexico. Nevertheless, based on the examples that I’ve seen, there is no way I would allow anyone in my family to get their band outside of the US.

    Doctor Confusion

Well, Clay, since my insurance paid for my band in Mexico, yes, i would expect them to cover complications. I really don't have any fears for that. I would probably go to Dr Ortiz for any problems I have anyway. I could have had the surgery in the US and my insurance would have paid for it, but after seeing Dr Ortiz and his clinic when my daughter went there in 2006, my husband and I felt that was definitely the right choice for us. None of the three of us has had any problem or complication whatsoever.

    Gum chewing?

This debate is up there with straws. Seems a lot of doctors and nutrition classes haves differing opinions. My doc in particular was not concerned about me chewing gum or using straws, though the straw part caused a discussion in my room between surgeon/heart failure specialist and the nurses. The docs won. As for the gum, he did not have a problem but said to make positive it is not swallowed, which could caused complications. Bottom line, follow whatever guidelines your doctor puts down. If you have questions that we're not covered, discuss it with him/her. Sent from my SM-G928V using the BariatricPal App

    Post op hip pain

The only way to know is to go get a blood panel and an exam. You are not even 6 months out and should just make an appointment. Do you really want to risk your health because of embarrassment over not taking vitamins? Get some soft chews of calcium and follow the plan. This doesn't sound typical as far as complications are concerned but deficiencies can happen and a full blood panel is the only way to know.

    Going crazy

Girl, I understand completely. I realized today that it is 1 week away, too,and I became very anxious. When they called to schedule my preadmission testing, I freaked out. I am getting very anxious. I am the sole provider for my family and am really struggling. My insurance isn't covering the procedure, so I don't even know if my life insurance would pay if something were to happen. At the same time, I know it is very unlikely for there to be a serious complication, and I need to do this for my family so I can be more active with them. I also need to do it so I can maintain the work I do for the next 20 years in order ot continue to provide for them. We need to do this, we will do this, and it will all be ok! That is my mindset right now! Ask again tommorrow after my last preop appt and preadmission testing and I am may be freaking out again.
  15. I was sleeved on Jan 24th 2012, Weighed 200, 30 yrs old. I'm wondering about post op long term ease or effects/troubles. I know we all recover differently - But I seem to be having a very EASY RECOVERY. I Was walking right after surgery, didnt take pain meds until bedtime & that was to put me to sleep not so much for pain. I do understand that I am still in the begining & have not tried very hevy & dense foods yet, but it's almost as though I have not had surgery. I dont get hungry (that's only happened 3x's) I do have a fair amount of reflux, I sleep with 6 pillows propping me up (Doctor upped my dose of protonix 1 in AM & 1 in PM) I have strength & energy. From day one - I can consume 40 oz of liquids (Water, Isopure, & Powerade) Two weeks out - I can have a full snack size pudding without any trouble, a full packet of cream of wheat etc. I have lost 15 pounds already ! My biggest troubles have been - Reflux No bath, shower only Belly button hurt pretty bad for a while Didnt use the bathroom till day 14 - But wasnt in pain because of that I got really hungry, 3x's !!!!! Thats it As you can see these are not really troubles - I'm so Thankful On the other hand - I read complete HORROR stories about this surg. One of my closest friends is going thru it now. She is 6 months post op, went in to hospital last week with fever, has a small leak, stint didnt work, she has pneumonia, a drain, a pic line. Now is on feeding tube and had another surg this AM to make a second passage to her small intestine because of the pressure inside of her new sleeve ????? I dont understand any of that, all I know is - Anything is possible. I am now scared to death for my recovery & my friends. I understood the risk prior to surgery, but now wondering..... Is it really possible to have this easy of a recovery or am I about to get slammed with loads of complications ? Did any of you have it this easy, I really need to know.
  16. I had surgery on 02/09/12. No complications or issues thank God. I didn't really have hardly any feelings of why did I do this...maybe because I was expecting it. The pain wasnt to bad either. I didn't mourn food but maybe because I was already used to it from the lapband. I didnt mourn it much then either. I do remember being at a resturaunt watching a young girl wolfing down a huge burger thinking I'll never be able to do that again but who needs that? I eat delicious healthy foods in small quantites to nourish my body. That's the way it should be.

  19. Where & from whom do you purchase complication insurance? How expensive is it?

30 days post op and all is well... so far.

40 pounds, that is great! Keep focused on regainging control of your life, so that food does not dictate your life. I am getting banded on Dec 22,2008, and I get married on Feb 28,2009. I only wish to loose as much as you. How much weight has your wife lost? Any complications?
  21. If I were you, I would look at the part of this forum that is dedicated to people who had the band & have now had to switch to the sleeve because of complications. Show your wife this. I initially thought that I wanted the band because it seemed less drastic. But research convinced me the sleeve was the better way to go... The long-term complication rate for the band was too high for me.

Dr. Bernie Hanna - Las Vegas?

I was just sleeved by dr Hanna on 5/15. I have had no complications besides the normal gas pain afterwards. I think he is a great surgeon and would recommend him. I work with three other people who have also used him for wls.

    OverFill ????

My Dr does overfill the band but that didnt sit well with me. Luckily I finally got restriction at 8.8 in my 9 band because even though they told me it wouldnt be a problem to overfill the band, just the increase of chance of complications from that isnt something I would have done.

    Supporting my Wife

Everything Berry78 said! I would also read the complications forum. This is might be odd advice. But it's best you know the real complications regardless of how rare they are.
  25. I lost 5 pounds of skin and 3 pounds of fat from lipo. That being said, I have only kept off a couple pounds. My ps said that is common. I had a unfill, because of some complications and decided that was a good time to have a hamburger and a rueben sandwich, since it had been so long since I could eat any of that stuff! Not a good plan. Oh well, I'm back on track now!
