    day 4 post-op

I was banded on the 29th. Had same experience. It was so bad went to the Dr. 3 days later. He told me this feeling is very common and is due to the band being tight around the stomach and releif will come after healing and weight loss. Even now a week later I am still on pain meds but am finding the sensation is weakening some.

Resistance work with a bad shoulder?

@@2goldengirl - Wow! Gymnast and windsurfer! How cool! I a not that brave. I have had the A/C reduction also on my right shoulder (and bone spurs removed and capsule shift as shoulder was dislocating). Took 3 surgeries. Wrong dr the first 2 times obviously. I was 32 at the time and had pain in that shoulder since I was 19. Appeared to just be some sort of genetic thing because I was never a sports participator. Then about 5 years ago I had a rotator cuff tear on my left shoulder which had to be repaired. Again, no specific injury so they don't know what caused it other than the bone spurs which they removed / reduced. Good news is I mostly have no issues now. I have noticed with weights and certain machines I have to shift the way I do the movement to reduce the stress though. Glad you have sought help for it. That arthritis is tough! My rheumatologist gave me Voltaren Gel for random joint aches. It really helps. Best of luck on your search for the right resistance exercises!
  3. My doctor told me I had to take this medication called Actigall starting 3 months post op and I would take it for 6 months twice a day. The purpose apparently is to keep you from developing gallstones which can result from rapid weight loss. So I compliantly took the medication only to start suffering severe joint and muscle pain. I called my PCP who said this is a MAJOR side effect and to stop the medication immediately. Apparently this side effect is the medication not being absorbed through the liver like it should be and is being absorbed into the muscle/tissue which can cause permanent muscle damage. Now, if anyone has followed any of my other posts you know I have had NOTHING but bad luck and issue after issue. When this happened I actually started to laugh because it would just figure I would suffer a major side effect from medication that is supposed to help you. Just wondering if anyone else was instructed to take this medication. Obviously, I am no longer taking it. I would rather take my chances of developing gall stones...which at this point....would not be far fetched given everything else I have had happen!
  4. Hello all. I had the Realize Band put it on 6/13 and have now lost approximately 17 lbs. A friend of a friend, who had bariartric surgery turned me on to obesity.com and that's how I found this website. I am rapidly approaching 60 years of age and could not take the weight off myself. I have probably gained and lost the weight of two people before this surgery, and this will be my last. My doc is very nice, but there is not a lot of communication so I find corresponding with people and reading these topics very helpful. I do have some questions for all of you out there: 1) When can you begin a regular exercise program, like Curves (this worked for me before, so I want to try it again) 2) When can you start to introduce fresh fruit and leafy greens into the diet? I'm allowed to begin eating regular food again this week, but the diet plan excludes fresh fruit and leafy greens and I have no idea why. 3) Can you ever have wine or other alcoholic beverages? 4) Do all doctors prohibity the consumption of fluids for an hour before meals and an hour after meals? Why is this? Thanks for all your postings and keep your fingers crossed that I am able to make the long journey with all of you.

  6. I have been on depo shots for a year when I first started I asked about weight gain. My doc put me on a diet not really to get weight off just so that I didn't gain weight. So I have uhc and I have to do a 6 month supervised diet. I called them today and asked about the 6 month diet and they said It didn't have to be a monthly weight ( I called twice). But I didn't think about the gyno till now. So I typed all this to ask do u think I can use the year for the 6 month supervised diet?

    Cigna Exclusion?!?

Just found out my group insurance with my employer has an exclusion for bariatric surgery. The insurance specialist at the doctors office I chose called on my behalf and found out that surgery is covered if deemed medically necessary. She was advised by to send in my hight, weight, and BMI for a "Precertifiation". This seemed very scant but she was advised this was all the info that was needed. My BMI is 40 on the dot. Has anyone else had experience with this "Precertification" process?? It will take 3 weeks to get an answer back. My nerves are wrecked!

    If You Could?...

I guess I only say skinny ppl coz rarely do I find myself judging or being judged by other big people... Some people who are compassionate in all other areas just don't understand how HARD this is!!! My partners family are prime examples... One is lawyer for aboriginal rights and still thinks wls is the "easy way out"!! He is very fit and never personally affected by weight issues before his brother met me.... Also I have met therapists, THERAPISTS, who have just NOT understood how psychologically traumatising it is to yo-yo over and over again with my weight! I had kids run over me with their bikes and poke me with sticks when I was little because they couldn't see me for me... They were all slim... I don't hate thin ppl at all, I've been 80 pounds and 300 pounds but being 300 pounds is probably the only reason why I can understand others who are overweight... If I had stayed a healthy 110 pounds my whole life maybe I wouldn't have the insight I do....

Just Got Approved Through Cigna Oap!

Thanks everybody!!!! Here is what I did: 1. April 27-Initial surgical consult (visit #1) 2. May 24-Met with dietician (visit #2) -Lab work & EGD done -Psych eval done 3. June 27-PCP (medical necessity/clearance) -Met with dietician (visit #3) -Final Nutrition consultation 5. July 24- Got approval You only need 3 visits, and the first visit counts. I tried to streamline the process as much as possible by using the surgeon's dietician on staff just to save time with fewer delays. I did use the psych through my insurance, since their psych was cash only. I paid my $25 co-pay instead of their $215 cash fee. I lost 8 pounds and gained back 3, so I don't think it matters. I expect to lose at least 10 pounds on the pre-op diet. It was very frustrating at times, but it was worth it. My surgery, hospital stay, and all associated fees are covered at 100%. Woohoo!!!!

    I get so annoyed when...

I am frustrated when people only talk to me about weight loss. My hobbies and interests are the same now as they were before. I am not a food cop and I do not care if someone is eating healthy 24/7. I get irritated when people think I am judging them.
  11. To the best of my knowlege you have to have a BMI over 40 or over 35 w/ obesity related co-morbid condition including.....diabetes, cardio disease, hbp, cardio-pulmonary....must have participated in weight loss attempts appraised by physician.....and possibly a phys evaluation. Here is the kicker for me though, mine won't cover bariatric surgery if coded morbidly obese? If anyone knows, what should it be coded?

    John Deere Insurance?

In Tennessee, one of the major insurance companies that cover the lap band surgery is John Deere. I was curious to see who has John Deere insurance and if so, how long does one usually have to wait before they are considered to be covered? I don't have insurance right now, so I have to back into this, being careful not to create any "pre-existing" attempts for weight loss surgeryon my files. THis is veryfrustrating, but if everything is done correctly, they will pay for the surgery %100! Please give me feedback if you have any!
  14. Hi there, I am getting banded the second week of May. I am so glad to have this opportunity to get off the excess weight I have been lugging around for the last 18 years! I am going through the Southern Oregon Bariatrics Center, located in Medford Oregon. My surgeon is Dr. Castillo and they just started doing the lap band surgeries in Feb. 2007. My insurance doesnt cover the cost so its a real sacrifice to come up with the money, but I know it will be worth every penny.....Any pre-op advice, encouragement, questions, etc., are welcome!

    getting banded in May

Welcome to LBT mommalee! Congrats on your upcoming surgery! You will do great. The band has given me my life back and I can't praise it enough! I love to see others who are tired of it and are doing something about it! I was lucky that my insurance covered my surgery but I would have had it even if it didn't. You are so right that the sacrifice will be well worth it. Getting the weight off and living a long, healthy life is worth it all! Best of luck to you and keep us updated on how things are going!
  16. My doctor says it's a lifelong journey and there should be no goal weight set technically. In your mind you can have a goal weight but you have to eat healthy for a lifetime. It doesn't mean deprivation but you've gotten the band to lose weight and that means controlled portions forever.

What does maintenance look like for a Bandster?

Steph, unfortunately we will NEVER be thin and enjoy that many calories a day unless you're working out like a horse. On my workout days, I can assure you that I will easily intake 1600 calories a day, but my workouts are very intense. If I didn't have a band, I'm sure I wouldn't be maintaining, even WITH the workouts. It doesn't matter if you have a band or lost the weight naturally, we will still have this issue where it will be harder to to lose and maintain weight than someone else our own size, weight and height. I know how unfair it is, and I struggled with this after my nutritionist told me, but I've come to terms with it. I'd rather eat smaller portions and be where I am now than where I was before. You can always have the band taken out, or unfill it completely, but at this point, I know if I did I would sky rocket to the way I was before. I've made the lifestyle changes, but being able to realize I'm full after eating a normal portion of food was something I had never experienced before. I would worry less about eating large amounts of food compared to just having good quality food. Believe it or not, what you are eating probably is a NORMAL amount of food. You shouldn't strive to overeat like everyone else does in a restaurant. What you're doing is great, and you should be proud of yourself! BTW, if you're comfortable with your current fill, I don't think you should have a problem with choking in public. I've never had that sensation in public, but I always chew, chew, chew. I know sometimes it's hard when you're with friends and they want to talk to you, but I've grown a custom to it. Even my friends who don't know I'm banded know that I take a long time to chew, and respect that. I'm not going to hurt myself as to not be rude. I either cover my mouth and say what I have to say, or put up my finger in a 'one moment' gesture. They get it. No one has changed how they interact with me. I take a while to eat, and I chew a lot. I say that it's part of my weight loss strategy (not a lie!), and no one questions me about it They're all cool with it.
  18. My original goal weight was 180 lbs. Over the past 2 years, I've revised that goal & set it at 160 lbs. I'm 7 lbs away from my original goal weight. Over the weekend, I was looking at some pictures of our recent vacation. We travelled with a group of friends. I had an 'ah-ah' moment when looking at the pictures - I looked like the rest of my friends. I don't mean I looked identical to them but I fit in with the group in terms of weight. I was no longer the biggest girl in the group. In fact, I wasn't even the bigger girl in the group. It got me to thinking about goal. I'm not sure where I'll set my end goal weight. What I do know is that I look like I hoped I would when I started this process. I have arrived! So, now, I need to start tackling maintenance. I need to educate myself & learn what I need to know to be successful in maintenance. So, what does maintenance look like for a Bandster? Do we continue to eat 1000-1200 calories a day? That doesn't seem right to me. The average intake for a sedentary female is 1600-2000 calories a day. Do we increase our caloric intake?

The scale is moving again, only slower this time!

:rolleyes:Still happy that when I get on the scales, I have not GAINED, two lbs this week since the last fill. Whoo hoo! I did find out when I went in for my Dr.s visit that the Dr. who performed my surgery is moving away, and now I am depressed. But I am so thankful for him and the relationship we have formed. He hugged my neck in the parking lot and boy did we get the stares from the nurses looking on. But he is truly very proud of his patients and how far we have come. He knows it has changed our lives forever! Thanks Dr. Tim! I will always remember you! It is not what you did or how you did it, but how it made me feel that I will remember! Best wishes to him, and I will keep up my promise to him to do the best I can to continue with the good work, for me and him.

  25. Ok, I had a weird day, so I thought I would share. As most of you know I live in Portugal so fat people are a bit of a wonder here......however, I have noticed a lot more obese people in the last year or two. With that being said......I have probably put on a few more pounds recently, I guess since I found out about the band and since I'm on the list for surgery, I have kinda let myself go, eating things I usually restrict myself from. (I have to restrict myself all the time just to maintain my weight) but I'm up to 250 now from 225. (pretty much over the course of a year or so) Right well, today I went to the mall with my husband, a totally normal thing, I go to that mall all the time, by myself, with friends, etc. But it seemed like no matter where we went today, people were staring at me. On the escalator, in the hall, at the restaurant, in the electronics store. I know that sounds paranoid, and I'm not usually very aware of other people around me...but geez... I stared eye to eye with at least 4 different people who were staring at me....they didn't even have the decency to look away. I looked at my hubby and asked him if there was something on my face, or something on my clothes and he said no (being charming as ever he said that people can't help but stare at pretty things) so I'm sitting here wondering what in the hell was going on today....can it be that the little difference in gained weight has made me soooooo big that people are starting at me now??? Or am I just paranoid? :paranoid
