    Hey everyone, new here!

Hi welcome!!! LBT is a great site for researching the band, and what is has to offer. Blue Cross Blue Shield differs depending on which state it is from. I for instance live in New Mexico, but have BCBS of Texas, because my husbands company is headquartered there. It also is dependent on whether the company you work for has excluded weight loss surgery---some do, others cover it. My experience with BCBS, is that they usually require 6-12 months of medically supervised weight loss attempts. So they will want you to see your Dr. each month, and follow his directions aimed at weight loss. Then when you submit to insurance, he will have to show where you saw him steadily as required. They also usually require a BMI of 40 or 2 co morbidities---which it sounds like you have covered. They wanted 5 years of documentation of obesity, which can be obtained through any Dr. records, or hospitilizations, any documents where they weighed you. As for cost it varies, from $10K to over $20K here in the US, and in Mexico you can find it for down in the 7-8k range. Financing it might be difficult with a fresh bankruptcy---any way to do it prior? Oh sorry, I just re-read you were doing it this week. Some people have used 401K's, refi'd their houses, e-loans, family loans---all kinds of things. There are some Dr.'s in Mexico I understand who do in house loans for the surgery, but I know nothing about them. I am older than you by many years, but relate to the want for the surgery. I provide day care for my 2 year old granddaughter. And I can tell you with 90 pounds gone---it is SOOOOO much easier to do! I think about it, and realize, that if I continue this way, she will never remember Granny as being fat!!! I love it! I too was taking 2 meds for HBP, 1 for high blood sugar, and had a massive family history of heart disease. Now less than a year later, I take no meds---my blood pressure and blood sugar, are both normal. I cannot change my family history, but I know if I inherit the artery disease, or heart disease, fighting it at my weight now will be much easier than when I was morbidly obese! We look forward to getting to know you too---good luck in your lap band quest!!! Kat

    Wls Seminar Today...

Went to the seminar today to get much needed info. The group we are going with has three surgeons who do these surgeries. I was interested in the sleeve but the doc leading the group today said he is not keen on the VSG only because of the track record of restrictive procedures. He made sure to point out that whatever the patient wants the patient gets but I think they push for the RNY. One of the other docs really likes the VSG so maybe he gets all those patients. Our appointment is Oct. 10. We have to get letters of approval from our primary doc and show past weigh-ins from office visits. Has anyone out there had trouble showing a history? I especially am concerned about showing my son's past weight issues. He goes to the docs far less than I. Any input will be appreciated.

    Help! I'm feeling hungary!

What food stage are you at? When I was at 2 weeks, I was moving to mushies. I ate a lot of Protein -- Beans, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, eggs -- and that helps stem the hunger. My surgeon has you do 2 weeks liquid, 2 weeks mushies, then introducing solids. If you don't have to be on liquids at this point, move to the next stage. I never felt very full with shakes. I only got through the pre-op diet with sheer will power. If you need food ideas, look at the recipe section of this site and there are good recommendations. My personal mushy-stage favorite was fat-free refried beans with taco sauce and low-fat cheese, melted. Sometimes I added a scrambled egg for a fake huevos rancheros. Good luck to you!

    First Fill

Yep! Me too on my first fill! It stinks!!!! I asked the nurse practitioner and x-ray tech and they agreed they get that complaint ALL the time! Bandster Hell I suppose....but man my 2nd fill did the trick and I just had my third one this week! I swear it gets better!

    Pre-op diet

I was put on low carb three weeks before surgery. Lost 20 lbs pre-op! My doctor also requires clear liquids two days before surgery. Sounds like you have a good plan. Stick to it. It is important to shrink your liver prior to surgery to reduce the risk of complications. Good luck!!!!!!!

    PMS & Slippage

BBG, I am so sorry that you've had such a rough week! Sending you mucho hugs and comfort. :) :girl_hug: I'm no doctor (and I don't even play one on TV) but you may just be jumping the gun a little on band slippage. The monthly cycle is one of most intense times for our bodies; hormones make everything a challenge and you know that with 7 days of PMS -- nothing makes any sense at all. :noidea: My advice is to BREATHE, allow your body to finish its hormone dance and make no decisions until that cycle is complete. Do the non-food things that give you comfort like:bathbaby: :drum: , or whatever makes you feel good. Instead of fighting your body and band, follow the lead it offers; eat when you can, and BREATHE when you can't. And of course, check back here whenever you get "squirrelly ."  and best wishes, Jo Ann
  7. Hey all :Banane20: Just wondering.....the title says it all really. When you break the 50 pounds to goal mark (currently if I was to have the goal of what the BMI calculator says I should weigh which is 119 I'd be 43 lbs away from that). In general, I recall the doctor's office looking at 6-10 lbs a month as being your 'sweet spot' for your band. I wonder though, at our stage, is that really our goal still. I find it is super hard to peel off 5 lbs a month at this point and I work out religiously, seven days a week. So, basically, I was wondering what the average weight loss per month is for someone at this stage of the game. Thanks for the advice :Banane20: and best of luck to all of you!
  8. Hi, I am considering having the LBS-but still uncertain. I've done online research & read a book about wt loss surgery. Will be going to see my primary MD next week to start the process. I see a psychiatrist who will document the necessity for me. I would like to know what liquid amount can be consumed and someones personal journey through the process. Thanks, Sandy
  9. Hello all! Well, I'm in a bit of a shock. I finally completed my required 6 months of supervised dieting and sent in my insurance information on Tuesday of this week. When I faxed it over, I thought to myself, "Well, it will take awhile to get approved--I probably won't be able to have the surgery for at least a month or six weeks." No. I get a call on Thursday, "You're approved! When do you want the surgery?" So, exactly two weeks after submitting my paperwork to the insurance company, I'm getting my surgery--October 7th! I don't even know if I'm emotionally ready for it. First there was the shock, then some dread, but today, only one day later, I'm starting to feel excited! I'm happy to be a member of the October brigade!

    Protein

My doctor says that once on solids using Protein shakes as a Meal Replacement defeats the purpose of having the band. The liquid does not stay in the pouch nor does keep us satiated like a solid lean protein will. The whole idea is to be able to eat a small amount of normal food and stay satisfied for longer periods. But if you are unable to get 60 grams of protein in three meals then shakes and other supplements are a good idea.

    Preop weight loss concern!

How much more do you need to lose? Depends on provider. I would call your NUT. 20 lbs in 4 weeks preop is awesome!! I have same problem but usually stall after 16 pounds loss. I am down 11 and have 9 more to go. 4 to go to get appt with psych. Sent from my SM-N920T using the BariatricPal App
  12. So my nutritionist requires you lose 10% of your body weight (14 pounds) before surgery. I started a diet the day after seeing her which will be exactly 4 weeks this Saturday. In that time I've dropped 20 pounds...this happens everytime I diet. I drop weight quick then it stalls and i gain...will I be disqualified for losing too much weight???

    Question

Hi there -- I don't think I can answer all of your questions but I wanted to relay to you something my doctor told me about straying too far from the post-op diet that REALLY helped me. I am big on LOGIC an dunderstanding WHY I have to do as I am told! I tend to get defensive when told to do somethign whithout a good reason -- lik ewhen I felt as if I could eat anything not long after surgery.... why do I have to stay on this restrictve diet.... here was his answer! Right now your stomach is helaing from surgery!! You may be ABLE to eat whatever you want, but you can't -- when you eat solid foods, or too much fat, your stomach has to work to digest that food. While your stomach is digesting, one thing it does is contract (like any other muscle when it is working) If you cause your stomach to contract too much too soon you risk disturbing the stitches (from where they took some of the stomach and stretched it over the band and secured it in place) and band placement in general. Ther are mor ethings to worry about then just stretching your pouch. You have to eat lightly and things that are already "mushed" (like, already chewed, not to be gross) so that the digestion will be as easy as possible on your stomach for the next few weeks while it heals. Hope that helps? It always helps me to have a mental image!

    June 28th baby!

Hello, I guess I should jump on board and try and get some support for this new journey I'm about to get on. I'm so excited! I'm self paying and so I am heading to Mexico on June 26th. I will be staying a couple days in SanDiego and then heading over to Tijuana for sugery. I'm supposed to do a 2 week liquid diet of protein drinks prior. Looking forward to chatting with some of you. -Heather
  15. So friends I just finished my last nutrition visit on Monday, I had to do total of six once a month 30 days apart. Now I'm playing the waiting game and just want the day to come. I did get to go to my first support group Tuesday and it was really great to be around people that understood me. Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

    Banded 10/29 and feeling great!!

Robin, It's been a week! I have one more week to go and then can start pureed food. I go to nutrition class later this week to learn more. I rarely take my pain medicine any more but I love my heating pad! It makes my abdomen feel better than the pain medicine and eases the tension in my back. I go back to work next week and I'm a little worried. I see my doctor on Thursday. How are you doing? Are you weighing yourself?

    Surgery today 5/22

Just wanted to share how easy this was today for anyone who might be getting nervous. I had my surgery today at 10 a.m. and I was home by 1 p.m. I've slept most of the day, I think from the pain meds I am taking. I'm taking them even though I don't have pain, just to head it off. I've sipped on Gatorade all day, maybe 1/3 or a bottle. My only complaint is a sore throat and I seem to get the hiccups, probably from sipping incorrectly. Good luck everyone! Oh, and I did a one week pre-op diet. Last week at start of diet I was 212, today I was 204. I am 5'7" w/ a BMI of 31.9 and want to get down to 150.
  19. looking for a therapist this week as well as weighing in to start my 2nd supervised diet month.

    Pre-Op Class Today

I had a half day of appts at my surgeons office on Wednesday also. Got my spirometor too and they explained nearly every step of the surgery. There were three of us, all getting banded on Monday, July 20. I learned that I don't have to stay overnight, which I originally thought, so I'm really happy about that. Got my liquid diet instructions and was quite pleased to see more than pure liquids on there. I can have applesauce, yogurt, grits and broths. It is for 2 weeks and I'm planning on sticking strictly to it. Good luck, and can't wait to see how your surgery goes.

    pre-op antibiotics?

None, in fact they took me off all supplements and some of my prescriptions for 2 weeks pre-op. I'm pretty sure there were antibiotics in my IV cocktail though. No issues with infections and I was out of the hospital a day early after only 24 hours.

Worst photo ever. I'll never be like that again. That was taken about one week pre op.

    pre-banding woes

I didn't realize I had a fear to be thin until the night before my surgery at 1 o'clock in the morning! You are way further ahead than I was mentally. Be grateful for that - you can start your work now. Knowing that I have that fear has made me realize WHY I have sabotaged myself so much in the past - so now I can get a grip on it and find other things to do with my time. It's interesting that one of my hobbies used to be eating and I'm not all that interested in it right now - mostly because I know I physically cannot do that to myself anymore. I plan on going to see a counselor, but already the realization and help from the band is changing my view on the world of food. You can do this! Think of all the things you can do with your time when you're not eating. I plan on learning the guitar (getting one for Christmas) and I got a page-a-day calendar that teaches origami. Anything I could think of that would just keep me busy. I was scared of saying goodbye to food, too. But you know, I'm already thinking of new ways to cook things or make things so that they are acceptable to my new way of eating. It's making me be creative. And with all the money I'm saving from not eating out constantly, I should be able to buy that new wardrobe as I get skinny! Heck, now that I'm thinking of it, I think that's a great idea - I'm going to put about $40/week into a savings account because that's about what I'd spend eating out...then I can take that money and buy new clothes. Think of everything you'll be able to do in your new, healthy, skinny, easier to move body! It's exciting. We're all here for you! I know you can do this!

    Gassy On The Pre-Op Diet?

I'm on all liquids now for the last 2 days. Yogurt, fat free cream soup, protein shakes and sugar free pudding or jello. First week was liquids with one high protein solid meal.
