Grazing, is this normal?
summerseeker replied to New_me_2022's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I would say that I graze all day too. I still have a good restriction, especially where meats are concerned, so to get my protein and enough calories in, I eat tiny meals all day. If don't manage to eat it, I will go back to it later. Protein yogurt for breakfast, Homemade lentil and vegetable soup for lunch, cheese and fruit snack in the afternoon. Meat or fish and vegetables for evening meal, nuts and seeds watching TV and a glass of milk before bed. It works for me and my constipation -
I tried premier protein shakes and the cake batter one is OMG amazing. Sent from my moto g power (2022) using BariatricPal mobile app

This is really about developing a way of eating that works for you. It’s only wrong if it doesn’t work. I don’t graze as such but I snack - usually 3 or 4 a day. I have specific range of things I eat at specific times - yep very routine & yep that anal. I don’t mindlessly snack. The snacks meet specific needs I have for protein, fibre, etc. My snacks don’t exceed my daily calories but actually help me meet my caloric & higher protein needs. I don’t track. Never had to & have always just done random checks about especially with new foods & to ensure I’m not over/under estimating or becoming complacent. I prep most of what I eat myself from scratch so I have a lot of control over what I eat. I snack on multigrain crackers & liverwurst, cheese, high protein yoghurt, nuts, protein bar. Occasionally I’ll snack on fruit (fresh or freeze dried), baked fava beans or chick peas, multi grain rice crackers & hummus (carefully as a slider), & peanut paste. I tend not to eat sweet foods at all so there’s very little sugar, sugar alternatives or artificial sugar in my diet. Bonus is the snacking between meals actually helps keep my acidic stomach under better control. Out of curiosity does anyone else find the time between eating gets less as the day goes on? I eat at 9am, 1pm, 2:30pm, 4pm, 5pm (not always), 6pm & 7pm.

February 2023 surgery dates!
Nikkic53 replied to Erin18's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just had my gastric sleeve on 2/8/23 and I wish I would have known how good I would feel. I was so scared. Starting on day 3 I just keep feeling a sense of happiness that is amazing! I feel really good- no restriction with fluids, still on clear liquid. I’ve had no issues, no vomiting, no heartburn, no issues drinking or getting my fluids and protein in, I feel so freaking good, so happy, it’s as if the surgery just instantly reset my hormones LOL! Not one shred of buyers remorse. I hope you all have an easy recovery with no pain or issues just as I am having. -
I start my liquid diet on February 28th. I really scared about that. What are you using for your protein drinks? Sent from my SM-S908U using BariatricPal mobile app

Calories vs. Net Calories
smc124 replied to CHRISSER27's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m stalling right now too. Trying to ignore it and push through. The nice thing about this surgery is when a stall hits we have the confidence to know if we stick to our dr’s plan for it we know something going to give and we will start losing again. Not fun when we are in one but I find it so much less stressful than weight loss stalks prior to surgery. I’m a little over two months out and also active. My team doesn’t have us focus on calories on protein and hydration though from tracking on lose it i know I am generally consuming between 600-750 total calories and burning 500 in my dedicated workout time with my active calories burned on my Apple Watch barely ever finishing under 950. I think most of the weight loss we see in these early months is more closely a result of the restriction and absence of gherlin than anything. Also important to remember caloric deficit for pounds loss is itself a very imprecise and variable. Follow the instructions of your team and you’ll be through this before you know it. -

Black tea does have caffeine, though usually less than a cup of coffee. If your plan restricts caffeine, look for a decaf option, which they also sell. -
Premier Protein Shakes
NP_WIP replied to devin.c.co's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some people do develop lactose intolerance after the surgery. I did get the film feeling preop but after it was fine and I can still have them today, I do switch up the flavors not to get bored. I also use the Elite which has 42g of protein in one bottle but have only found chocolate when I have one of those it is so much easier to reach that protein goal. -
Premier Protein Shakes
vsg2410 replied to devin.c.co's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven’t been able to tolerate premier shakes even preop. Theres a lot in premier shakes that could be causing you issues - whey protein, artificial sugars, lactose. My stomach has a hard time with whey protein but I can drink the fairlife protein drinks. Fairlife is my favorite protein shake hands down - it doesn’t have whey protein added to it but it is made with milk. You may want to try a plant based protein to see if that’s the issue! I like the OWYN brand for plant based pea protein. -
February 2023 surgery dates!
Semalnar replied to Erin18's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What I did was I mainly focused on making sure I got my fluids in. I started my pre-surgery diet 14 days prior, with 3 shakes if I could remember to get them all in and 1 sensible meal (they gave me a list of approved foods) but mainly focused on water or protein waters (collagen peptides). The main reason and idea behind the diet is to help your liver use up its stores of glucagon and fat, so when you go in for surgery your liver will be nice, healthy, and tight tissue instead of being a bit on the softer side which can cause issues not only with visual fields but bleeding if the liver is not tight enough. Not that this is usually too big of an issue but the better you can do pre-surgery the easier the surgery and better recovery will be. As much of a challenge as pre-surgery diet is, post surgery can be just as challenging. I had surgery on February 6th 2023 and it's been a struggle finding a rhythm to my "eating" which is still mainly liquids. Good luck 🤞 -
BARELY any weight loss in first two weeks??
MaameWata replied to MaameWata's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you ever so much for responding! i don’t log calories and have decided not to as I used to have an eating disorder which surrounded excessive calorie counting, and I don’t wish to get back into that routine. I will focus more on low carb/high protein intake when I eventually start eating solid food again. The yogurts and soups I buy all linger between the 100-200 calorie range I guess, and I usually have one yogurt and 4/5 tablespoons of plain tomato soup a day. The rest are UFit shakes and water x -

BARELY any weight loss in first two weeks??
MaameWata posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi all! I’m a new member of the group - I hope you’re all well! I had gastric sleeve surgery on 31st January 2023, after losing 13lbs on the pre-op diet. On the morning of my surgery, I weighed 281lbs. I lost no weight in the first week even though I was drinking my required water intake and having between 60-80g of protein a day. Today is two weeks post op. I’m officially allowed to move onto purées and so first thing this morning, I weighed myself and I’ve only lost 4lbs?? I try not to compare myself to others, but I’m so disheartened and even low key regret having the surgery now. I keep seeing people reporting a stone weight loss in a week, 12 lbs a week, 8 lbs the second week etc and so I assumed this would be the same for me. I’ve been very strict with my post op diet and making sure to get in at least 30 mins of movement a day. I’ve typically been consuming protein shakes, water, protein yogurt, tomato soups and the odd sugar-free/fat free children’s ice cream lolly. I feel like I’m doing something wrong, and feel like a bit of a failure. I feel like my body is actively working against me. I spoke to my bariatric nurse who just said ‘you’re still healing, give it time’, but I don’t know if it’s just an excuse. -
I wasn’t given calories either just portion sizes. Started at 1/4 - 1/3 cup slowly increasing to about a cup by my goal at 6 months. I was a low calorie consumer so barely 900 at 6 months but that was me. I found, that as your dietician suggested I slowly increased as I was able to eat more & needed more. By the time I was stabilising (around 18months) I was following more accepted recommended portion sizes: 3-4oz protein, up to a cup vegetables & eating around 1300 calories (now about 14400) which is about appropriate for my age, height, weight & activity level. But that was me. Your needs likely will be different.

Anyone have issues with Premier Protein Shakes? I’m 1 week post-op and starting on Friday last week, I started having issues with them. When drinking them it would make my stomach upset, give me a weird film in my mouth that would leave a weird aftertaste and I couldn’t get rid of. Even brushing my teeth it would stay. Because I couldn’t stomach it, I switched to a plant based powder and use fairlife fat-free and so far I’ve been fine. I have had lactose issues in the past, so wondering if this may be that or if others have experienced something similar.

Food Before and After Photos

Burger and fries for dinner. Ate mine with mushrooms, onions, peppers, cheddar cheese, stone ground mustard, Mayo, spinach and tomatoes. The seasoned fries were meh so I’m glad I only ate a few. Calories are including a full serving of fries though. And then one of my full days calories. Also breakfast was an Atkins chai protein shake and some buffalo flavored combos. -

I've heard so much about head hunger on this site. So far, I'm just not interested in food at all. It's been hard to meet the calorie and protein goals. I am 5 days post-op, anyone into the pureed stage? When did you really start wanting food? -

Mini tasting menu Japanese lunch. I had a taste (about a teaspoons worth) of everything, except the Chawanmushi (which i ate in its entirety) plus a miso soup with clams that i didn't take a pic of. For perspective, each bowl is about the size of a tennis ball. Est 355 calories for what i ate...mr. ate the rest. Clockwise from top: spicy salmon sashimi & avocado on sushi rice; braised beef tongue and tamago (japanese style rolled omelette); Chawanmushi (savory steamed egg custard with shrimp and mushrooms), squid, Ikura (salmon roe) and a quail egg on sushi rice); seaweed salad in the middle. -
I am 1 month post-op today and I’m down about 18 lbs. I healed quickly, I’ve been back on the treadmill since week 2 and am walking 2+ miles a day. I had very little pain post surgery and I have had NO problems with any foods. To the point where I feel like I SHOULD be having more difficulty. I have lost little if any weight since January 25th. A girlfriend thinks I’m consuming too many calories. I am eating between 800-1000 calories a day, but burning between 400-500 on the treadmill daily. I’m tall. 5’8” and my SW was 290. CW is 272. I started the pre-op diet at 303.2. Am I eating too many calories? Should I feel ok that my NET calories daily are closer to 500-600 calories a day? I feel like my mind is slipping into that dark space where I feel like this surgery is gonna be a failure. Like…. The weight just isn’t going to come off. I know this “stall” was to be expected…. But I would feel better with more directions aside from meet your protein and fluids (which I’m doing). Would love to hear your thoughts.

Hi I am a year and a few months out and currently 60. Best thing I have done for myself. Just think water, protein and vitamins. ALWAYS take your vitamins.

Keep doing what you are doing. It's not uncommon to have frequently plateaus and then drop 5-10 pounds. also if you are lifting weights you will gain muscle mass as well and may not show a loss but that is fine. I had my surgery Nov 2021 and I am still losing and go up and down 3-5 lbs depending on the month. :) I have surpassed my goal weight and don't focus so much on the scale. I may weigh once a month if that. Just be mindful of your water and protein and the rest will follow.

Haha I didn't understand what you were saying PSMR - I live in Europe too - here a milkshake is milk and fruit and whatever else you fancy adding - you're right - in the USA that IS a smoothie!! I'm voting for your filling up the hotel fridge on arrival. I travel for work sometimes too and I have taken to what I call 'hotel picnics' with a vengeance since my surgery! Deli meats and babybels and other cheese are my saviours, along with fruit. When I can eat proper meals in the hotel or elsewhere I go for salads every time. Protein bars as a backup sound a great idea too. It's really good to think about this stuff well in advance - I didn't and I remember my first work trip after surgery, just landing in this godforsaken hotel and thinking 'waaaaah, there's nothing here I can eat!!' There ALWAYS is - just needs a bit of planning and creative thinking. Best of luck OP!
