Yes, on the same day they are removing my band and then doing the bypass. I am nervous about the pain and recovery afterwards and if I will be up and moving the same time as everyone else.

Gallbladder First, Sleeve Next
Smanky replied to Meganator's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my gallbladder out in 2015 after a terrible gallstone attack that sent me to Emergency. The gallbladder removal was honestly almost painless post-op. It was done laparoscopically by the same surgeon who did my WLS, and I was in hospital overnight. The discomfort was mild and the only time it peaked was when I was jostled - like when in a car going over a bump. I was given the all clear to travel interstate a couple of weeks after (as it was near Christmas), and the bumping from the plane landing hurt, but that was it. It's an absolute breeze compared to my bypass, which has been very sore post op. The bypass left me feeling like I'd been hit by a truck, and five days out, I still feel like I've taken several hard punches to the gut. The incisions from the gallbladder removal were also much smaller! No more than a centimetre, versus over an inch with the bypass incisions. I've had 3 surgeries, and in order of pain levels, they're: 1(most pain) - Bypass 2(still painful) - knee reconstruction ACL 3(barely any pain) - gallbladder removal. EDIT: It's worth noting that I also had a hiatal hernia repair with my bypass, which has made my post-op pain greater! -
Quality/enjoyment of life with sleeve vs RNY
catwoman7 replied to E-mom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
honestly, they are pretty much the same as far as lifestyle and eating go. I do pretty much the same things I did before surgery, other than I eat less now. I love my bypass and I'd choose it again if I had to make the decision today. But there are definitely fans of both surgeries, and the "after life" is pretty much the same. P.S. with both surgeries, there are a lot of restrictions the first couple of months - but once you're a ways out, there really aren't any food restrictions with either surgery. -
Marathon fueling post gastric bypass
Jacks133 replied to Ninjamom2019's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My daughter had a RNY bypass up 2011 and went on to run over 100 marathons in a year… She loved it. She found she eventually tolerated the gels, although they wrecked her teeth! She ran most weekends until her dog pulled her over during a walk and she hit her hip and damaged the cartilege. She found she needed to eat almost every waking hour if she wasn’t running to keep her weight up. It was hard work managing as she also couldn’t eat much before she ran. Taking on fluids was the most important thing and she would need the salt tablets too. She was also a vegan at the time… It can be done! -
My surgery is scheduled for 10/8 and I am having my lapband removed and getting the bypass. I am so happy to know that my food will no longer get stuck.

Weight loss beyond the top “normal” BMI
Crick replied to Crick's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I saw your pre-plastics pictures on another thread and believe me, I have a TON of excess skin compared to that. I can lift large amounts up from my stomach. It’s nasty. And yes, the plastics will be about the look - not about the number on the scale, but I am confident I will lose at least 5 lbs from skin. I could be wrong but just given what I can see at this point, it’s pretty significant. I have done a couple of tests where I know my resting metabolic rate is 1385 - which is what my body would burn if I was in a coma for 24 hours. So I know my caloric deficit is still pretty good given my activity (the last time I had the test was in mid-July - plan on doing it again in early November for a status check - and they also check body fat % as well). -
It's a less complex bypass that has one fewer "connection" (so not a "y" per se)... they staple off part of the stomach to form a pouch and then bypass a smaller amount of the intestines.

How can you be successful long-term with WLS if you’ve always failed
GooseyGirl replied to meggs353's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My doctor told me not to think of it as stomach surgery, but rather brain surgery because you’re changing the way your mind thinks about food. I was sleeved on 9/13 and when I woke up from anesthesia I felt RELIEVED, like it was the best decision I had ever made. I can’t speak to the bypass, but with the sleeve I’ve felt almost no hunger, no cravings, AND the foods I am thinking about are way healthier… I don’t know why. I used to want pizza, pasta, ice cream etc (just carbs and sugar!) constantly, and now I find myself thinking about salads and fish. I don’t think it’s ever “easy” but I’ve never dropped weight like this before. I’m down 25lbs since 9/1 and every day when the scale shows me a lower number than the day before I’m still shocked that it’s working. I hope this helps, good luck! -
I had gastric bypass surgery on August 24. It’s just over a month later and I’m feeling like my Cymbalta is not working. I’ve noticed I have been feeling depressed which I initially just attributed to the surgery but now I’m wondering if my body is even absorbing the medicine like it should. I did not have any problems with the dosage prior to surgery.

Hi! Any marathon runners out there? What is your hydration strategy? What is your fueling strategy? I am 2 years out and my long run now is at 15 miles. I have run with and without gatorade chews. Not sure if I feel a difference or not when I ate some chews. I have no issues eating sugar (not sure why). Thank you!

2 week pre-surgery diet
CoolJules121971 replied to oldandtired's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! I am in my 2nd pre op diet stage right now. My surgery (roux ny gastric bypass) is next Wednesday. Right now I can have 4 protein shakes a day plus broth, sf jello and sf popcicles. What has got me through is being creative with flavors. I have chocolate, vanilla and strawberry whey protein isolate and I use sf pudding mix and/or sf syrups to add flavor. My favorite combination is strawberry with 1Tbsp sf cheesecake pudding mix, it is bomb! Sent from my moto g play (2021) using BariatricPal mobile app -
this happens to about 30% of sleeve patients - that's why they recommend bypass to people who had GERD prior to surgery. And people who've never had GERD before surgery can also develop it, unfortunately. Sorry this has happened to you. The suggestions lizonaplane made (above) are good ones. Hopefully some of them will work for you!!

You can try "lifestyle remedies" like elevating the head of your bed on bricks or whatever, not eating for the 4 hours before bed, avoiding foods that may be a trigger (tomatoes, greasy food, spicy food, alcohol, chocolate, peppermint, etc). If none of this works (there are other lifestyle remedies that I may have forgotten - try googling) you may need a revision to bypass unfortunately. It's a very common problem. Good luck!

My bypass was September 2, I lost 12 lbs in the first two weeks, nothing more since. Kind of worried I’m not doing something right.

September Surgery Buddies!!
TiMaria replied to happilylacey's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi everyone! I’m trying not to freak out, but I need a little reality check. GAstric bypass on 9/13. Everything went SO well. I’ve been exercising everyday since (heavy cardio and weights) and following the meal plan. I started purées on day 7. I’m getting all my protein and water. On day 7 post-op I was down 11.8 pounds (SW: 233 > 221) I was shocked. And so SO very excited that this will FINALLY happen for me. Then nothing happened for 2 days. On day 9, I saw 218 on the scale. But then the next day (day 10) I was back up to 221. And I’ve been there since (today is day 11). I had my post-op appointment (day 10 PO) w. surgeons office and they said all looks good. I mentioned my concern with the number on the scale. I was told that all they care about right now is amount of protein, vitamin levels, and incisions. They’ll care about numbers “between 3 and 6 months.” 😳 I’m just so disheartened. I’m petrified that this will just be another thing that doesn’t work for me. Rationally? I know it’s been 11 days. But it just feels like everything else I’ve tried in the past right now. Everything I’ve tried and not had work. Any advice / stories would be appreciated ❤️ -

Highest weight (sleeve 2017 ) 285 I only got down to 210. Bypass revision due to GERD and regain (dec 2020) 242. Current weight 160. Those are my stats. I have found that with my revision surgery, I am losing weight slowly but steadily. I’m happy with this though and I’m at my lowest I’ve ever been in my adult life. Also, my GERD is gone :) All the best to you

2 week pre-surgery diet
Tomo replied to oldandtired's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was on a 10 day clear liquid diet so it is different than a regular liquid diet. I found this on the net and it is a good source for your liquid diet. "The 1-2 week pre-op diet will include the following elements: Protein shakes or meal replacement shakes will be the diet’s primary component. Only sugar-free beverages are allowed (sugar substitutes are okay). No caffeinated or carbonated beverages are permitted. Soup broth with no solid pieces of food may be consumed. V8 and vegetable juice are acceptable. Extremely thin cream of wheat or cream of rice may also be eaten. One or two daily servings of lean meat and/or vegetables might be okay, but only if they are approved by your surgeon or registered dietician." https://www.obesitycoverage.com/the-big-gastric-bypass-diet-guide/#pre-op -
Discomfort when eating or drinking.
Rafiaa_8 replied to SarahMae's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m one month post op and I just started eating and slowly getting hungry. Every time I eat I feel a weird pain in my chest and stomach I dont know if that’s normal tbh cause I take super small bites and I chew well too. I have my second follow up in November so I’ll ask my doctor if it doesn’t get better till then. -
