I would find another bariatric surgeon to follow through with you for the rest of your "journey". If you're not comfortable and they are not meeting your needs, then this isn't a good fit for you. I felt the same way about the weight loss being slow and feeling rushed into surgery. I actually took four months to kind of marinate in the whole idea before finishing up my prerequisites. The first six weeks were really tough, then I started seeing some changes. I've lost less weight than some friends, and more than others. I had to accept that everyone is different and will lose at different rates. I also had to get emotional support to start digging away at the psychological issues surrounding the food addiction. I regretted the surgery until about a week ago, now I think I did the right thing and its working, but its only been 9 weeks so maybe in a few more months I will be even more sure about my decisions. If you aren't willing to find another doctor, I would definitely have a discussion with the doctor you are seeing and his office manager. You deserve to be treated like a patient, not a number. Good luck, Liese

Sorry you are discouraged. I was banded on Januany 18, 2011 and am still on the liquid diet. I had seen postings about the book "Bandwagon" by Jean McMillan on a forum and ordered it from Amazon. She is really honest about her own feelings and the process itself. It is really helping me understand what is going on with the band and my feelings. When you are deciding to do something about your weight you don't even know what questions to ask. My doctor does the first adjustment at 5 weeks after surgery. I would be frustrated too to gain back 6 lbs. I wonder sometimes if I rushed into this but I know in my heart that I would not have changed if I didn't do this for myself and I was getting so depressed when I would go clothes shopping or see a picture of myself. Good luck to you and maybe we can help each other through some of this.

We miss you around here! I can't believe it's been two years for you already - congrats on reaching goal but even more so for managing to keep it off with your healthier lifestyle. You're one of the few that actually looks younger now that you've lost weight, by the way. I think that the weight loss can make a lot of us that were heavy for a good while look older. I've heard many a lady lament that she swapped fat for wrinkles! Congrats again, and it's a shame you're not around speaking reason to the newbies but I understand. I take breaks now and again, too! ~Cheri

We usually lose in the beginning as we are taking in fluids only. When you start on mushies and solids, it is not unusual to see some gain. As others have posted, it is important to eat small amounts, give your body time to heal, and get good support from somewhere. This site is excellent to stay in touch with fellow "banders" and get good tips. As far as the back pain, I too suffered alot. Soon as I started losing weight, I noticed I was able to do more exercise. Every little bit helps toward your goal.

Yes, you are still in the healing process....My doctor said not to worry about weight loss for the first month....you are still swollen on the inside and you are healing....Some say you don't lose until the first fill, some don't lose until after the 3rd fill....each person is different....it has only been two weeks and five days...you are probably eating mushie foods right now, just don't eat more than you are supposed to....I was told not to eat more than a half a cup....and that is all I eat...I eat three times a day, no in between eating and I eat no sweets... I try to drink as much water as possible, and I am trying to exercise....but at two weeks almost three weeks out you might not even be up to exercising , yet... Just hang in there....you will lose....and my advice to you, don't weigh yourself everyday....I only weigh a couple of times a week...I don't want to get crazy over the numbers.....I stick to the plan and try my best to make good choices, but I am not going to weigh every single day....

Hi! Got banded on May 22. I lost 10 lbs the first week while on liquids. The next week I started on some soft food and started gaining back some weight. Is this normal? I am a little disappointed.

Wow, it looks like you both are already on your way to losing tons of weight. Congrats! I can't wait to be in your shoes. Thanks for welcoming me.

I was Banded on 4-16-08. I was in pain (the port site mostly) and needed 2 weeks to recover --go back to work. I too had the same struggle in my mind, before AND after I already did it. The key is to stick to the regime. If you go off it then all the things the liturature says will happen WILL. I often said to myself I should of just went on a diet one more time ...then reminded myself I was on phen phen redux meridia weight watchers hypnosis jenny craig and all the tv and on line diets slim fast need I go on. I have lost 20 lbs in 4 weeks and have begun to fell it is worth it .. when you put on something that did not fit you will fell differently...and as a nurse I can tell IT WILL AFFECT EVERYONE DIFFERENTLY!

Hello all. New to this forum and am a bit overwhelmed by all of the topics and threads so hopefully I'm doing this correctly. My name is Rachel and my surgery date is scheduled for December 1st in central Jersey. I'm using Dr. Abkin. I've been going through all of the pre op prerequisites and it's all just a lot to wrap my head around. I've struggled with my weight my entire life, and at 31 I feel slightly defeated that this is what I've had to turn to. Besides being morbidly obese (I'm 251 with a bmi of 41), I have no health issues. I've lost weight before, but I can't keep it off. What is it about this surgery that's going to make it different, ya know? Anyway, I'm maybe looking for some buddies that are sympathetic to my journey. I haven't garnered much support from family or friends. Everyone is confused about my decision. But everyone isn't me and hasn't lived my life. I hope that this post finds everyone well.

December 1st surgery date
IncredibleShrinkingMan replied to rachelr28's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
@@rachelr28, welcome and congrats on your decision. Fellow Garden Stater here. This will be a very different experience in countless ways. Without getting too technical, basically, the idea is that in the past, we have attempted to lose weight by reducing caloric intake which results in two physiological effects: 1) reduction in metabolism by the body in an attempt to prevent weight loss and 2) dramatic increase in hunger caused by the stomach sending a hunger hormone to the brain to demand compensatory eating until the body is back to the weight it was before you started the diet. The sleeve prevents the latter from happening. You will have a stomach that is about 15% of the volume of your current stomach, meaning you will become full much faster, and on far less food. However, your body would need the volume of food you consumed before to maintain weight with all your activities and energy output, so the result will be dramatic weight loss. Your metabolism will slow, but it can't slow enough to keep up with the huge disparity between the calories you need and the calories you can intake. The surgery's most important effect is that the hunger hormone is produced in the part of your stomach that is removed irreversibly during surgery. So you wind up with a double protection against weight gain...you just can't fit very much in, nor do you want to because there's much less signaling going up to you brain telling you that you are hungry (but there's just enough from other places to get you to eat to keep you healthy). There is even some evidence that the sleeve changes the bacteria in your stomach that results by some unknown mechanism to automatically reset your "set point" down to a healthy weight, whereas right now, it is fixed at a high weight, and your body is programmed to defend obesity in any way it can. So the way the previous poster described it, with you instead of against you, is exactly right. Best of luck! -
While trying to lose weight I ate between 900 - 1000 calories for 2 years. I did not increase my calories to 1200 until the last 30 lbs and I needed the extra calories for working out and doing strength training. Not to be critical, I do not think a DQ Blizzard is on our list of healthy choices. While trying to lose weight high calorie deserts and food choices should be avoided, try a healthy alternative a banana or apple. I know boring but you have to decide what you want to lose weight and be healthy or to continue to eat the same garbage that brought you to this site. I chose to eat healthy and it pays off and so did Floridays. You can't lose the amount of weight we have lost and continue to eat the same way. Get over the guilt and tomorrows another day.

I agree, I'd put it in a shadow box with some fun travel pics of yourself at your highest weight. A little inspirational/visual reminder of all the hard work you've done. -
Hello everyone! I'm on the countdown. My surgery is scheduled for August 30th and I'm excited to get back to me. Your posts have been both informative and encouraging. Is there any place on the forum where people discuss the expected weight loss and does it depend on the starting weight?

How is your blood pressure and cholesterol? Diabetic? These are a few health problems that the insurance will make exceptions for if the bmi is not what they consider "high enough". Good luck on your sleep study, I did not have to have one of those done so I have no idea what it will be like. I was banded, however, last thursday (its been 5 days) and I have already lost 14 pounds. As my weight had crept up to its max, I had begun to have problems with my hands falling asleep and breathing difference. Both are already gone now. It has been an exicting few days to say the least. Best of luck.

wondering if you would share your results at 6 mos. post op?
sarao replied to sarahh1828's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am almost 5 months out and I have gone from 229 pounds to 166 pounds. A loss of 55 pounds post op and 8 pounds pre-op so a total loss of 63 pounds. I went from a size 18 pants to size 12 pants. Let me say that many people have a misconception about lap band surgery being a miracle surgery and that you don't have to do anything but sit back and lose weight...WRONG!!! Your tool will only give you back whatever you put into it. I have to watch what I eat/count calories and do exercise. Good luck to everyone on their journey!!! -

I was hoping for some motivation. I realize that everyone is different, but I was hoping you could tell me your starting weight (or size), and your weight(orsize) at six months post op. I would really appreciate this. Thank you!! -
Today Marks A Week For Me! 7 Days Is Finally Here!
cheygirl replied to alwayshavefaith's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on 6/13/12 and I was on just liquids till yesterday. The first week was nothing but clear liquids then the next two weeks was clear liquids and protien shakes. I did notice once I started the protien shakes, I did start to feel hungry a little. But usually it was around the time for the next shake and it would go away for awhile after the shake. I did start picking at food as I was cooking for my family and for an entire week, I didn't lose any weight even though the rest of the time I did nothing but liquids. Live and learn I guess..... lol ..... Now I get to start mushy protien and veggies for the next two weeks. I found it hard yesterday to finish 3oz of protien and 3oz of veggies. Started to hurt a little in my chest while eating, so I stopped. I guess that's a good thing in a way. Good luck to you both and here's to success for all of us. -
Today Marks A Week For Me! 7 Days Is Finally Here!
jena21177 replied to alwayshavefaith's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey girls! Glad to see some people that were sleeved around the same time as I was, June 28th. My diet is 7 days of clear liquid all I had was sugar free Jello, and SF popcycles and crystal light lemonaid. I'll be honest I disnt get a lot of Protein in, but I was good taking in liquids. The chockem broth was making me vomit just from the smell!!!!My nutritionist gave me the ok to have a Protein shake yesterday. I had a smoothie king gladiator with strawberries and mangoes. It was so good!! It lasted me all day. Today I could start on creamy soups and I made a lowfat potatoe Soup replaced cream with chicken broth and a little low fat sour cream. I puréed it really good and was able to have four small spoonfuls. It was so good to taste something normal!! I did put some unjury powder in it. Some other souls you could do a puréed black bean soup. Would love to hear more of what you guys are trying and eating!! I've lost 20lbs since being home!!! But I did gain 7 from my surgery. -

Need Advice, please help.
kwright replied to chargers56's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Good luck with Kaiser in San Diego. I went to their information seminar in May and decided to go with my other insurance. While I was at the seminar I learned that you had to have a bmi of 50 which clearly I didn't have and that you have to go through their weight loss program which takes about a year. Back in May they didn't have a contract signed yet with Pacific Bariatric since their surgeons didn't do lapband at that time. Best of luck to you and hopefully the process doesn't take as long. -
Had an appointment with the NP this morning and I have made it to my pre surgery weight. I even weighed 5 pounds less than my pre surgery goal weight. Went home and got a call to make my appointment to meet the surgeon. My appointment is next Tuesday and I am psyched. Things are moving along. Yahoo

Hello, I am new to not only lap band surgery scheduled for June 30th, but also to a forum. I am 326lbs and I am so excited to have the surgery. I do have a question that I am having a hard time finding out an answer too. I have PCOS and that makes it hard to lose weight, believe after months of following strict diets and only losing 3 or 4 lbs is very flustrating. Does anyone have PCOS and banded and how are you doing on the weight loss? Thank you for helping. I have learned alot already just reading other threads.

I wish I could tell you that does not happen, but it was also my biggest fear. Sure enough, woke up sick and vomited non stop for 3 days, none of the regular meds worked for me. Had the patch, had the zofran, had phentergine, nothing. Finally, I was given compazine, and praise God , it worked. I was sent home with it as well, but I can tell you in 3 days it was gone. I later learned it is sometimes a complication of this surgery and usually lasts no longer that 3 days. I was so scared I would pop my sutures or form a leak, but none of that happened, and It did not in any way add to the pain, in fact I had almost no pain, which was also a blessing, as I cant take pain meds either for the same reason. I can also tell you, I would do it all again, and most would tell you the same thing, so dont worry..they will do all they can, and by the time I came home, I needed no more meds and each day has been better. There is nothing that compares to how good you feel once the weight is off, even just a bit of it. Best to you, you will be fine so dont wasit any more precious time with worry, it wont change anything
