    188 lbs and counting

I find with the lapband exercise is a must but with the bypass it is not! Your best bet is the bypass
  2. I was always wanting the bypass...but my surgeon wanted me to have the sleeve..I reluctently agreed as he was the professional...but in the same day he asked me to go for an Endoscopy..to see if I had reflux as Im taking "omeprozole"...Last week I had the Endoscopy and glad I did..as it showed not only having a hole of about 2cm....I had a Hiatus Hernia and full reflux. An hour later my surgeon came in......he said right you will now have a full bypass...due to what I found in the results...im happy so happy..I finally got what I knew was best for me..and it will get rid of my reflux and repair the hole too. So those who suffer reflux must be better to have the bypass..seeing from the notes Ive read on here and my own experience. Id never have a Band..no way...the bypass I feel will give me back a certain control Ive never had before...rather than food controlling me!
  3. I wanted the sleeve but my insurance wouldn't cover it. The surgeon said I would lose more weight with the bypass anyway. I don't regret it, but wonder about why I couldn't have the sleeve.
  4. I do know that galbladder problems are fairly common. Im purely making an educated guess but I would imagine its somewhere close to 15-30% of patients that end up needing their gallbladder removed (which is why generally many patients at least where I work have their gallbladder removed during the bypass if they have any stones even if they arent symptomatic) Other than that I know internal hernias are fairly common. Dumping Syndrome very common, especially if you dont behave with your diet. Ulcers can be common, especially if you do stupid crap (ie smoke drink) As for the shots cant they be given at home ? I mean diabetics take insulin at home all the time, no idea why someone couldnt give once monthly vitamin B injections at home. The shot isnt a big deal, so much as having to go to the doctor and sit there and wait

    Decisions! Decisions!

All I can say is, "Wow!" I have this voice in my head that is telling me that messing with my insides might not be the smartest thing to do. Your experience seems to echo that. For anyone reading this, I'm not knocking the band, the sleeve or gastric bypass. It's not a easy decision, a quick fix or the "easy way". If there were just one solution, we'd all take it. Perhaps I shouldn't be surprised at my band issues as my body also rejected the initial attempt at breast reconstruction; the tissue expanders had to come out a week after placement! I know the battle of weight - tougher for women just based on being women, but also by way of society's narrow definition of what is beautiful. It still chaps my hide that you can be an obese man and be a respected politician(Gov. Christie, NJ), business leader etc. but by and large, an obese woman won't get the same respected or success. And let's not even get into the attitude to being over age 30 - heaven forbid a woman in her 40's or 50's be considered "sexy" - why it's a fluke that requires multiple magazine articles and conjecture on how much "work" she had done. See any guys in the same age range getting the same treatment? I'm sure I'm not saying anything new; I'd thought that with WLS I'd not be thinking about food as much. Are you kidding me?! It's all I think about...can I eat this? will I get enough Protein? is there a bathroom nearby in case I get sick? It looks like regardless of choice, food will always be the monkey on my back. It also appears I will always be dealing with people like my husband, who's answer to all of this is for me to have the band removed and just, "try harder to diet and exercise" and my sister-in-law who's all for me having it out, "before summer so you can eat summer foods" - frustrating any way you look at it. Trying to weigh(no pun intended) both sides of the health issue (obesity -v- complications), the fear of gaining the weight back, the annoyance of regardless of which path I chose, knowing I'm going to have to think about food far more than someone without a weight problem - for the rest of my life. Somehow it feels like I'm going to be damned if I do & damned it I don't! I do appreciate everyone's thoughts and input - gives me a lot to think about.
  6. Am four weeks out of my gastric bypass. I was 250 and now I'm 227. I'm in the third stage but even with my shakes I'm not getting in more than 500 calories a day. Is something wrong with me? Why does it seem like everyone else has lost way more than me at 4 weeks?

    newbie and nervous

Most people aren't educated about Lap Band surgery and think its like gastric bypass. You should give your mom all of the facts about it so she is totally aware of how it works. I know my mom is worried about me having it done, but she's always worried when I've had to have surgery. Explaining everything made it easier for her to accept.

    newbie and nervous

I too was afraid at what my mom's response would be when I told her about my plans for surgery. I took the risk to tell her I was going to the informational seminar... just to get more info and then shared it all with her including how it worked, risks and how it differed from the bypass... I could tell that initally she was a bit taken back...But by the next morning, after sleeping on it, thinking about the many failed weight loss attempts I have had and how obesityy has impacted my life, she came around to being supportive.... In her words " I have prayed for years for you to find a way to manage your weight and maybe this is God's answer to that prayer". Best of luck!!!

Anyone With Bcbs Federal? Sleeve Covered?

I, too, have BCBS federal and got approved in less than 24 hours. My sleeve surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday, the 11th. Is there some reason, other than misinterpretation of the insurance policy, that your doctor wants you to have bypass over sleeve?
  11. I had my surgery in 2003 I've lost over 150 lbs. I had some skin removed but I need more removed. But Mass Health won't pay for it they say its cosmetic surgery.. Which it isn't.. I really like my doctors and they do fight for me. I just wish if u approved a person to have gastric bypass surgery make sure u allow them to go all the way. Because this extra skin needs to go. It holding me back. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using the BariatricPal App
  12. I actually had the sleeve in 01/13 and had restrictions but not real progress so Tuesday I'm have the bypass. I never even lost 75lbs and I was 365 and now I'm slightly over 300. My doc actually chose for me and I trusted him, which I still do and he's doing my revision Tuesday. My friend who was about my size had hers right before me and was successful as well as maintained it with the same surgeon. I have PCOS, depression, anxiety and a few other things that factor in obviously but I think I'm just one of the people it unfortunately didn't work for. I still eat so little and got absurd reflux from the sleeve but no other real complaints. Sometimes I think it's a crapshoot and genetics but your goals are a huge factor. Good luck to anyone still deciding! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  13. The first few weeks are difficult. Re the feeling cold and also hot - I have this too. I think it might be down to the hormone changes generated by the bypass surgery. As long as you don't have a fever maybe just see how it goes. I felt sick for some time after surgery and was taking anti-nausea medication. It went after a few weeks. Good luck with it, but if you're worried definitely check in with your doctor.

    Port Revision Surgery

Thanks new me for your encourgement. The longer this journey goes, the more I learn about it. Now I have been told that the band cannot stay inside us forever? Get differint information on various fronts. I was so frustrated gaining my weight back , as I was thinking of having bypass or just take it out altogether. Came to my conclusion that my band is already there, might as well make it work again.
  15. So I was really keen to do this and I've booked in my first consultation for the 7th November (earliest I could get in) but now I'm not sure. Is it the "cheaters" way out? Am I giving up too easily? I just don't know. Should I focus on making sure I cut out all the crap in my diet and go exercising and I'll get the same results without surgery? Is it just simply about education? I was sitting here talking to my sister and we found out that the orange juice I'm drinking at the moment is MUCH worse than drinking the same amout in Coca Cola? What the hell?? I knew juice wasn't that good, but gosh I didn't realise it was that bad. It just looks better to drink the orange juice than the coke. I'm not dissing this idea, and I'm going to go and see the doctors, just so many thoughts running through my head. I guess my question is, how has the lap band helped you?

SCARED PRE OP in Portland OR

OF COURSE you can do this. Just remember it's not going to be super-easy and just "happen". You will have to work the program and make better choices. Like you said, the band is just a tool, not a FIX. It's really been difficult getting used to eating smaller portions and not drinking with meals, etc.. -all the instructions we are given to follow. My advice is to FOLLOW THEM as close as you can. Don't be nervous about people finding out. You will lose weight SLOWER than if you had bypass surgery ,, so its really up to you if you want to tell people or not !! who cares what they think! Focus on YOU, not them. BEST OF LUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 278/231/180

Surgery was in October, now I stay sick...?

My best friend is 4 year post op gastric bypass. She is having the same thing.... fever of unknown origin... they did find some kidney stones and blood in her urine but her white cells drop and she becomes anemic requiring Iron infusions. It is a mystery to the docs. She has had a million different consults. She has been worked up for leukemia... rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, lupus.... so far everything has turned up negative. I am frustrated for her because she is a single mom with a toddler and a teen and has a stressful job. I wish these docs would figure out what is going on with her already.

Surgery was in October, now I stay sick...?

ME TOO! Her and I are both nurses and we talk about it all the time. Makes no sense but they did say they think there is a correlation to what is going on with her bypass.....especially the kidney stones. She actually got septic from the kidney stones which caused a massive UTI and it went systemic... landed her in the ICU. She has had consults with infectious disease, oncologists, rheumatologists, urologists... you name it. It is so frustrating that they can't figure this out. She was doing really good for about 3 months and just a few weeks ago she started feeling run down again and they ran blood work only to find her blood counts were all low again, white and red... they had to give her another Iron infusion.. matter of fact the day I had my sleeve. She came to see me after her infusions. They are sending her for more tests. I will add you to my friend list and email you if they come up with anything. Hang in there... I know its maddening. :/

    Signing consent

I signed my consent at the surgeons office this past Tuesday, and my surgery is not till November 6th. Dr did weight me as he does at every visit. I already had the date prior to signing @scarlep. Good luck!

    Gastric bypass versus Sleeve

Most people I know with the sleeve go back eventually to just constantly dieting. And they regain fastwr.I wanted a full life style change so I went for the full bypass. Crossing my fingers. Just had my surgery yesterday.
  21. I had bad acid reflux before surgery, so I opted for the gastric bypass. Little did I know I had a hiatal hernia and 10% of my stomach was pushed up through my diaphragm. So I guess I'll never know if the sleeve would have been OK for me after the hernia was repaired. I'm just happy I am reflux/heartburn free now. I have read many sleeve patients suffer with it so I can see your dilemma. Good luck!

    '08 - Best of who's left!!

If this poll is any indication it's going to be one heckuva close race in November! LOL

I exchanged problems w/ my band removal

Not really. It's not because of your BMI it's because of your reflux. If your reflux is due to a hiatal hernia then you can fix the hernia and the reflux goes away. But if it isn't from a HH then a sleeve can make your reflux a gazillion times worse. If you get a sleeve and your reflux gets worse the surgical option for fixing GERD is a nissan flundoplication but you can't do that procedure after WLS. So you'd be stuck with GERD worse than you started out with. But..... If you get bypass it will fix your obesity problems AND your GERD. So first thing is first, do you know why you have reflux? Has a hiatal hernia been ruled out? If you have one, get it fixed. Then if you still have reflux then your best option is bypass. The anatomy of the pouch after bypass is such that GERD goes away 99 times out of 100. You cannot live with reflux, you will end up with barretts esophagus and that is basically esophageal cancer just waiting to happen.
  24. I am making my final decision this weekend between Sleeve and Bypass. Those of you post-sleeve, did the weight loss help relieve High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Diabetes, and/or sleep Apnea for any of you? Do any of you experience dumping with your sleeve? Thanks from a newbie,
  25. Had surgery 2008. threw up often and everything I ate. after all this time, i'm still throwing up. not every day but when I do it is mostly mucus along with some food. I chew everything well. sweets ie; candy, always stays down. wish the food would. now i'm a diabetic still and I eat chocolate to survive since everything else won't stay down. there are days when I can eat just about any thing and then I feel great. but it is not everyday. any ideas out there? have had dumping syndrome one time and it was terrible let me tell you, once was enough. i'm down to 180 from 397 and feel ok most of the time. am also a severe heart patient. triple bypass and 27 stents have been placed. so would I do this surgery over again?? In a heart beat. Being fat was a nightmare I wouldn't wish on anyone especially a child that was the butt of every nasty, malicious taunts etc etc .people have no idea what being fat is all about until you have been grossly fat for some time. Just being able to fit in a movie theater seat, made me cry the first time. just fitting into a size 42 jeans made me cry in a fitting room, down from a size 62 pant size. wishing to blend into a crowd and finally doing it and feeling invisible for once in your life. being the stand out "fat" person was not my idea of a nice life. so even with all this throwing up I still would do it all over again. I was one of the people who felt, speaking just for myself, that even if I died during surgery it would be better than having to live one more day as "The fat person every body laughted at or was discusted by".
