  1. Hello all, I'm near 7 weeks post-op and I was wondering if the feeling in the stomach while eating will forever be present? Sorry if that's vague, but since being let loose with no restrictions I am being consciousness to not take big bites, chewing/eating slowly, and that I need to reintroduce foods, but when I eat I still get a feeling in my stomach like when you eat with an empty stomach and it clunks, something different from feeling full. It's honestly putting me off from eating from time to time and was wondering if there's an end to where I can just eat normally and feel full? As with things I've been already familiarized myself with during recovery (popsicles, steamed veggies, and protein shakes) seem to be not an issue.
  2. I just went in Tuesday, Weight was 290 and was told needed to lose 15lbs to get to the next step. Once I get there I call to do the next step which I assume is the psychological part of it. So I downloaded MyFitnessPal app and am sticking to 1600 calories, making sure I hit protein and staying with the range of fats, carbs is impossible I ate broccoli and cauliflower and my carbs went over by a ton! So I think no one has gotten fat by eating veggies so I am not going to stress out about that. I weighed myself this morning and I dropped 4.5lbs. I'm sure that is the salt and water weight, but 15lbs seems very attainable. I will start incorporating walks next week since my energy is going up. I have a goal of doing this surgery during my kids winter break so my mindset is pure focus! We can do this!! I am more than happy to be an accountability partner if you need one!
  3. I went to see my GP this week to get some testing done. I actually looked forward to going, knowing things would to be better than the last time I saw her pre-op. She along with everyone in the office flipped out when they saw me. I'm down over 80 pounds in 5 months. The nurse said I lost a small person. LOL I could fit comfortably in the chair when they drew my blood. You know that little table that folds down in from of you? I had room to spare. She asked if I was having fun buying new clothes. I told her yes. I love thrifting and now able to get around to do it. The head nurse had to come in and take a gander at me. She called me yesterday and told me my bloodwork results were amazing. Everything is in normal range now. I am no longer pre-diabetic. Even my liver and kidney functions are normal. Those things scared me the most and my main reason to get the Gastric Bypass. Don't ever let anyone tell you those things aren't reversable. My GP said she can't believe my numbers. Told me all her sleeve patients don't have these kinds of results in a year, even after prescribing them Ozempic. She sees patients from a local surgeon who only does the sleeve with no follow up support. I'm guessing most of those people aren't following any protocol because I see the good results on here, every day, of sleevers' success stories. I love reading them. I went out of town to get my bypass in April that thankfully has a great Bariatric support team. I go back to see them for my 6-month checkup Oct 11. They did a vitamin panel on me last time and all was well except my B12 was a bit high but nothing to worry about. And I go back in January for my annual physical with GP. Was told they can hopefully start taking me off my meds. I will be closer to goal weight by then. Something else to look forward to.

    When did regain start?

we all probably have different definitions of what constitutes a "significant" regain or what is considered "quick" in regaining that amount. further to that, we are all different weights and sizes so a regain of 10-15 lbs means very different things to someone who is 100 lbs vs someone who is 150 lbs vs someone who is 200 lbs with that said, i "regained" about 9-ish lbs in about a year starting around 1 year post op. HOWEVER: this was from my lowest weight of 109 around 1 year post op....and i wasn't there long. i "regained" to 115-ish and stayed there for several months, then hung around 118-ish for a couple years. going up or down 3 or so lbs with daily fluctuations, but my moving average stayed basically at the stated weights. i'll be exactly 5 years post op in a few weeks and i have been closer to 120-ish for the past 1-2 years. this morning i weighed in at 116.6 (but this is a bit of an anomaly for me as i recently lost a couple lbs by quitting smoking...but that is another story, ha!) anyway, i feel like i digressed a bit there, but the point i was trying to get to is that in MY experience i am strictly CICO. i gain when i eat more than my maintenance cals*, and i lose when i eat less...and i have 5 years of of My Fitness Pal food logs and body weight measurements to prove it. *i have been operating on a maintenance cals amt of about 1800 a day for a couple years now.
  5. I just had surgery this past week, but for the last 6 months or so I have been adding quest on flavored protein powder to everything liquid that I could think of. I put it in soups and make shakes with it but then add my own flavors because I also cannot stand artificial stuff. It's a pretty cheap option and get your protein in plus doesn't spike insulin or blood sugars.
  6. Hi, I had gastric sleeve on 8/17 and developed an itchy hives rash on my chest, back and butt around 2 weeks after. I still have them, but it has slowly gotten better. My bariatric office had no concrete answers. I think my bariatric multivitamin chew may be the culprit. High in niacin B3…I may be having a reaction. I stopped taking them a few days ago and started to get a little better. I have had the random skin infection in the past, but nothing like this. Unfortunately I have no answers.
  7. Hey, @Jlw1403. I had my bypass + hiatal hernia repair on June 6th of this year. The operation went fine, and being on liquid, then pureed, all the various stages, wasn't hard, I just wanted more. I took the supplements (multi + iron, and calcium) but as I progressed now more than 3 months out, I'm less hungry, find a lot of food or the thought of it, almost distasteful, and have to force myself to eat. Drinking liquids is not a problem simply b/c I get dehydrated, especially in the Texas heat. You should talk to your surgeon/dietician and see if there is any physical reason why you are having a problem. I would not do it in an accusatory fashion- more in the "I need help here " vein. I think, from what I've read here, that everyone's experience varies. It's like we all have different sensitivities to certain foods after the surgery, but-at least to me, you should be able to intake the basic minimum-- I was OK with the Max Protein drinks for about 2.5 months- then I found them gag worthy and couldn't digest them. I'm told it's about sips, not guzzling, but still. It is a pretty serious surgery- one that has a ton written about it in the med journals, and pretty safe in terms of outcomes. But tolerance for food and drink is probably very individualized. Get help. You don't have to suffer.

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

Hello, I had GB on 8/16/23 I developed slight acne along my jaw line and chin around 2 weeks post op. I am now 5 weeks post op and my acne has subsided but left me with acne scars. I was just told it was my hormones fluctuating and to make sure to reach protein and water goals as well as take my bariatric vitamins.

6 days post op and STARVING.

I never lost my hunger when I had my sleeve. It really sucked. Ironically, when I had the revision to the bypass, I lost hunger. I'm now 1 week shy of being 3 months post op from the revision and I still don't have much in the way of hunger. Try having the unflavored protein shakes, since the flavored is too sweet. Have mostly broths and anything else you can that has protein in it. Right now, that's the most important thing. Definitely get your fluids and protein in.

    September 2023 Surgery buddies

Tired but feeling good. I do still feel a little achy in my abs but it continues to improve daily. I had a Zoom call with a nurse this morning and she was happy with my healing progress and with what I've been eating (averaging 80-85g of protein every day). My scale this morning said I'm down 11 lbs since surgery day last Thursday and now 31 lbs since the beginning of my two weeks of pro-op liquid diet at the end of last month.

    Could it be a leak???

I agree with Arabesque. Those all sound like pretty common things during the first couple of weeks after surgery. Leaks aren't common and are almost always found before you even leave the hospital. If you're concerned, definitely contact your clinic, but this all sounds pretty normal to me.

    Food Boredom

I get this. I normally eat the same couple things for breakfast and lunch because it'd easy. I put more effort into dinner. I plan ahead a menu for a weeks worth of dinners. It help keep the boredom at bay.

    Food Boredom

I get in food ruts, I will eat the same thing everyday for 3 weeks because it's easy, and fits the diet... then I just don't want anything. Balancing is definitely a challenge for me.

    Could it be a leak???

You’ve had a pretty major abdominal surgery so it isn’t unusual to still feel bloated or swollen for a good week or so. Your shoulder pain indicates you haven’t breathed out all your surgical gas yet. Even though liquids pass through your tummy more quickly, they could be making you feel bloated especially if you’re not used to drinking large amounts of fluids. Check your shake for sugar alcohols (end in ‘itol’) as they can make you feel bloated. Lactose can also cause bloating. As for the abdominal pain, it may be the sex you had last night. It may have been too much at the moment. Remember all the sutures & staples holding your tummy together & all the muscles & other organs that were pushed & prodded during the surgery. We usually told just to go for short gentle walks in the beginning. I added a list of the symptoms of a leak below. If you are experiencing some of these head to your nearest medical centre. Check in with your surgeon if you are still concerned. All the best. Rapid heart rate Fever Stomach pain Drainage from a surgical wound Nausea and vomiting Pain in the left shoulder area Low blood pressure Decreased urine output
  15. I got a little bag of samples when I saw the nutritionist last week. Turns out I much prefer the Celebrate 45 Tropical Twist vitamins to the Bariatric Fusion orange flavor, so I've placed an order for those and the sweet treat assortment of calcium soft chews, which were almost dangerously tasty. The Unjury chicken soup was better than the other brand I tried, but not enough to buy it. And their vanilla shake was vile. I just can't do artificial sweeteners, and probably not vanilla unless I add something to it to mask the flavor. The aftertaste was so strong and I had a vague impression of drinking baby formula. So far the only ones I've really liked have been the orange and peach flavored Syntrax Nectar Naturals, so I'm going to get two vegan fruit flavored options in case I have trouble with whey after.

  16. QUICK OVERVIEW: 8 days post-op Gastric sleeve No problem drinking. Not really eating/no appetite. Ok for proteins shakes and electrolytes. Lost 10 pounds in a week Feeling permanently bloated/full despite not eating, and stomach is still swollen/distended. Gas pain went away on day 3. Pain came back in left shoulder, on&off since day 6 No pain whatsoever inside the belly (the actual stomach) since surgery, except today it started. Thought I was maybe hungry so I had a bit of liquid food (as per my plan). Did not help. It's not excrutiating but very uncomfortable pain right in the middle of stomach area. I did a lot more today (walking, errands, etc).... and i had sex yesterday No other symptoms. No fever, no nausea, etc. Could it be a leak?? (Also, I'm anxious naturally)

    Post surgery hair loss

As @Sleeve_Me_Alone has stated it's absolutely completely normal. There really isn't anything that can be done to stop it. At this point those are already dead hairs and are going to shed out. Trust and believe I'm living this now. I had surgery 4/11 and the shed started at month 3. I still have shedding in month 5, but it's a lot less than when it first started. The collagen, biotin and keeping up with protein will just help support healthy new hair growth, but won't do much to against it.
  18. Hi! I had VGS on 8/23/23. 4 weeks from surgery TODAY! I feel great. The past few days have been weird, though. I can't eat or drink as much as I have been able to the past 2 weeks. I used to be able to somewhat easily get down a protein shake in 30 minutes. Now it takes me a few hours. Does that sound right? I don't feel sick or anything. It just feels like I am going backwards. Should I be concerned about this? Anyone had similar experiences? Thanks for your help!! Melanie

    No forum for SADI patients?

I can eat virtually anything or any amount of calories. The downside of overeating is pooping it out multiple times in a day, along with gas and sometimes bloating when I eat too much fat or dairy. To be fair, as absolutely fantastic and awesome as I look for an old fart, I have the downside that anyone who loses weight has: 1) You look anorexic and cancer like for at least awhile, maybe forever. I'm in the middle somewhere. 2) Loose skin - anything north of 100lbs is a guarantee of wrinkly loose skin in many places. I have it but it's not as bad as many others experience. PLastic surgery to remove it is always a possibility if it bothers you. 3) I take vitamins daily, but no where near as much as any Hess DS patient.
  20. well i actually wasn't trying, really. i recently quit smoking (going on 2 months now, yay me!) and i was worried that i would gain weight trying to quit, so i've been extra vigilant about what i eat and i ended up losing those lbs. i guess i was surprised that 3 lbs were even noticeable, even more so that people seem still feel like they have a say in my weight. le sigh.
  21. I have a friend who got roux-en-y in our mid-20s. She lost a lot of weight, I have known her since childhood and she had always been heavy, gaining rapidly in high school. After high school, she had 1 child. She then married someone, got weight-loss surgery, got breast implants and a panniculectomy then proceeded to have a set of twins and two more kids. She managed to lose all of her pregnancy weight, by not gaining excess weight while pregnant and she did not re-stretch her skin. I think you should go for it. In my opinion, you should live in the present. Life has no guarantees, and you want to be comfortable and happy now. You may or may not have children in the future, but don't let the hope of something, hinder your happiness now. The best way to keep a handle on how much your skin might stretch during pregnancy is to monitor yourself, and not gain more than recommended. A couple of scenarios- 1. You meet someone, are not comfortable in your skin and let it hold you back. 2. You meet someone, have children, and are so busy with family life that getting the skin removal surgery is put off for several more years. 3. You have the surgery, you meet someone, have kids and your stomach does not stretch. 4. You have the surgery, meet someone, have kids, your stomach stretches just a little bit you decide it's no big deal or you just have another surgery.
  22. Sorry, I guess I wasn't exactly clear. I did speak to my surgeon about this. They say it's probably best not to do anything. That's why I'm so upset. I don't have plans to have children tomorrow. What if it's 3 years before that happens? Am I just supposed to be miserable until then.
  23. I would get the drinks with the sweetener of your choice and just add the unflavored protein to them, or brew tea and add the erythritol to it, then add the protein powder. I hate artificial sweeteners but I have decided part of my journey to surgery is learning to tolerate them as this is a lifelong change and I don't do well with sugar alcohols like erythritol. My surgeon requires the 2 week pre surgery liver reduction diet to be done with the Premier Protein premade shakes and those are sucralose based... I think I have like 10 flavors of them now. LOL I still cringe with the first few sips but having them ice cold helps. With fruit drinks I find a sour component helps cut the artificial taste and sometimes watering them down more than the package states. I like adding cold brew coffee concentrate to the shakes, the bitter component balances out the sweetness. I'll have to get decaf for after surgery! But really, the pumpkin spice flavored one with coffee concentrate makes a pretty decent pumpkin spice latte!
  24. I'm sorry you regained, that is so frustrating! 80 lbs in 3 months is a lot, I'd talk to your doctor about checking your thyroid and your fasting glucose level... Most of us gained weight during Covid due to less physical activity, comfort eating, and more time and accessibility to snacks. Snacking is notorious for gaining weight back after surgery. The hard thing is we don't feel like we've changed anything big in our eating habits but unless you are tracking literally everything you put in your mouth you really won't notice how much extra you are eating. Changing drinks from water to other things is a big culprit too and easier when we are at home next to the fridge. And tasting things/snacking while cooking. There is no shame in regain IMO, life happens in unpredictable ways. Covid was a huge hit for most of us and caused a lot of changes in living habits just to get through! I haven't had surgery yet but I gained about 50 lbs in the years around Covid, I'm immune compromised so was on strict lockdown for forever. Converting to a DS can help with more weight loss and maintaining weight loss better, it has the highest statistics for total excess weight loss and weight maintenance. However since it is a conversion for you (not a virgin surgery) the weight loss will be slower than it was with the initial sleeve surgery. You will still lose weight with it if you are diligent, you can still get the weight off if you got it off before, but in order to do that you need to figure out what is causing you to gain weight so you can correct it and help the surgery work. Revisions can be game changers for some, but they aren't miracle workers, they still require hard work and effectively using your tool.

    When did regain start?

for most people it seems to start up in year 3. It did for me. I put on about 15 lbs pretty quickly. I think part of it is old habits sneaking. back in, and part of it is metabolic readjustment. It's not inevitable, but it seems to happen to most of us
