  1. This is prob a stupid question but would love to know the answer to encourage me to drink!! Why is water so important to our weight loss? I have seen people posting to drink more to break stalls or reasons for inadequate weight loss etc. What function does drinking high volumes of liquid serve?

    Incisions

They only remove them if they don't fall off on their own. Sometimes if they use glue too they don't come off at all. If they are still on at your two week apt they will most the time take them off. it is better to hold your incision closed to minimize scaring but if they look like they are getting infected under the strips they need to come off so the incision can dry out.

    stomach gurgles?

Yep, all of that is normal. I still don't have regular bowel movements (I'm about 5 weeks post-op). I don't know your nationality; I'm Black and my scars are healed but darker than the rest of my skin. I didn't think my port scar was ever going to look normal, but I'm sure the line will fade and look great later. I bought Vitamin E and put it on my scars daily (be sure to wait until they're closed). I think it took 3 -4 weeks for them to heal. Good luck!
  4. After 8 years with a moderately successful lapband I am revising to RNY Monday morning. I've been painfully aware of my port for months now and can't wait to have it removed. I am praying that no lasting damage has been done and all goes smoothly. I know many are in my situation so I will update my progress next week - wish me luck!

    How much carbs on AVG?

Carbs can be a friend or foe and everyone has their own sensitivity to them and the type and timing seem to play key roles. With me, they are a friend to help me with my weight lifting. I have lots of lean Protein and a good number of complex carbs for my 2-3 meals after a workout on days I lift. I really limit my fats those days. The few days that I don't lift, I have more fat (good fats, not saturated if I can help it), and less carbs. For me, the only good carbs for me on my lifting days (4-5 a week) are broccoli, quinoa, oats (no sugar), green Beans and maybe a little brown rice or sweet potato. On those lifting days I probably easily get 100+ grams of those complex carbs along with 100-120 grams of lean protein. The 2 days a week that I don't lift, I'm pretty much low carbing it to around 30-50 grams, but if I go a little over with veggie carbs, I don't really worry about them. My cardio days (1-2 a week), I'm mostly low carbing it.....for now. If my body fat % ever gets low enough, I'm sure I'll have to add a few more carbs on those days to help with energy and recovery. That would be a good problem to have..... With all of that said, the simple carbs......... I try to totally eliminate. With the key word TRY.........but on a rare occasion, I'll fall off the wagon with the sugary or white carbs. Since we are all different, the best way to find out is by trial and error I suppose. Just try to be informed with your nutrition (like with your MFP) and in tune with your body's sensitivity to them and that will probably help a lot. Not sure, but hope this helped.........

    ITCHY

Benadryl (children's liquid), warm bath with Aveeno oatmeal powder, calamine lotion & aloe Vera (after the bath). That's what my doctor recommended for me and it made me feel so much better. I had an allergic reaction to something in my chewable Vitamin that caused the severe itching and all-over rash that accompanied it. I still do the Aveeno bath at least once a week and it is heavenly! I would check with your doctor if your symptoms get bad and see what he recommends. Best of luck and I feel for you!

    Incision Pain

@@portiv I'm going to be 6 weeks Thursday! I'll let you know what I found out on Monday. Of course, you should be in contact with your team too if it's bothersome for you!!
  8. I am 3 1/2 weeks out from Gastric Bypass and am having terrible pain all around the large incision. I would of thought by now I would be pain free. By the end of the day it is almost unbearable! Does anyone else have this issue?
  9. Sooo happy! Talked to my doctor today. I am 1 week post-op and he moved me up to puree stuff today! And right in time to puree up a litle turkey with gravy! Makin sure I get the protein in also. Havent been hungry at all even with the liquids but the tastes were gettin pretty boring. Never been so excited to taste cottage cheese, refried beans, pureed veggies and all that good stuff... Still havent weighed myself and not goin to til my 2 week MD check up. I really can feel more room in my clothes tho... This year im thankful for alot but especillay for my lapband which will help me be healthier for years to come.. Hope everyone has an awesome holiday!!
  10. The giant sucking sound of Mexican Medical Tourism By Dana Blankenhorn | April 30, 2010, 7:25 AM PDT 15 Comments more + While most headlines about Mexico involve immigration or drugs, there is another giant sucking sound coming from our south. That’s the sound of medical tourism dollars. (Shown is the Atlantic Health International Hospital in Mazatlan, from the Mexico Buyers Guide blog.) Last week the Institute of the Americas hosted a conference in La Jolla, near San Diego, about the topic. The Deloitte Center for Medical Solutions predicted a surge in Mexican medical tourism with the end of the recession. Many Americans already get their drugs in Mexico — there are 345 pharmacies near the Tijuana border alone — but now we’re talking about real procedures. Baby boomers especially are being targeted. The La Jolla Light covered the event, noting that an angioplasty costing up to $80,000 in San Diego could cost one-tenth as much across the border. The reason is the same one fruit pickers use in taking Mexican workers — cost. A nurse who makes $75,000 here may make $12,000 there, and malpractice rates are low, too. Of the nearly 1 million Americans who went to Mexico for medical care last year, about half were not Mexican immigrants. UPDATE: The figure from the La Jolla Light article is 952,000 traveling to Mexico for care. The article also notes there are 1 million American retirees now living in Mexico, getting regular care from Mexican doctors. A lot of privately-owned hospitals are now being built in Mexico to meet American demand, with state of the art facilities. Medical Tourism Corp. adds that in addition to cost savings, some procedures that are new or not-yet approved in the U.S. are commonplace there. The Joint Commission International accredits medical tourism facilities, and Health-Tourism.com lists eight major facilities there that are accredited. The site also offers a price comparison, noting that many common procedures cost 50-75% less there, and the savings on heart operations there are really spectacular. I wrote here in 2008 about how Mexican medical tourism was growing more organized, and last year about how companies that self-insure risk are encouraging patients to travel, sharing the savings with them. Maybe that giant sucking sound Ross Perot heard years ago was just coming from a dentist’s chair.

    Plateau

At what point did you feel like you got stuck at a weight that seemed like you were holding there for 2-3 weeks? What did you do to move the scale or what did it take? Most days I usually get 50-60 grams of protein but that is an average. I know I never get my full water in as well. I do exercise 4-5x week for an hour. Just feeling like I'm stuck and it's just been 1full month on the 21st?

    MIA for the holiday

I just wanted to take a moment and wish everyone a happy, safe and blessed Thanksgiving holiday. We are heading to West Virginia to visit John's family for a week. Because of how isolated in the mountains of WV we'll be, I won't have internet or phone service. I should be able to get phone service sporadically when we head into "town". I'm very thankful to have the opportunity call all of you friends, and very grateful to have you all in my life.
  15. Hi guys, I was sleeved on Dec 14. On puréed foods now which I've been tolerating. Started New whey about a week ago and 5 days in, started getting very sharp gas pains making it hard to move. Dr's office said to back off the New Whey, which I have, but now the other Protein drinks are giving me the same problem (and I've been tolerating them since day 2) So I'm not getting much protein in at all. Is this something that subsides? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  16. I've been super busy the past 3 weeks and have slipped into some "grab & go" habits that aren't serving me very well. No loss for 2 weeks and today got on the scale and was up almost 2 pounds. I'm close to goal but it's been very elusive because I've gotten lazy about my choices. Anyone have some good standby meals that are quick and easy when you're on the go? One of my problems has been not making time for meals so I've noticed I grab a little of this and a little of that......which really translates to grazing all afternoon. Old habits die hard............ What are some favorites for healthy, high protein, low carb, bariatric friendly choices? Think it's time to clean out my kitchen and start over. Easy to get a little cocky since I've gotten closer to my goal weight.......which is exactly what I don't want to do!! Thanks for any input!!

    Quick & Easy Suggestions?

I'm only about 6 weeks out, but I keep the fridge stocked with cheese strings, meat, greek yogurt, apple sauce for snacks. If I need a quick meal that I haven't prepared for I have several cans of soup in the pantry (kinda high in sodium, but better than some options). I also set aside leftovers from the night before for lunches.

    Polycystic Ovaries

I am not sure about it either but I had my period 2 days after surgery and I haven't had one in almost a YEAR! I never thought I would be excited about shark week. My surgeon said that the weight loss will definitely help with PCOS.
  19. I lost 30 pounds my first 2 weeks from surgery. Now I have not lost a pound for 10 days. Is this normal? I regularly exercise and eat as my surgeon suggest. I have lost inches during this phase. I am just wondering how long will these plateaus last and what should I do while experiencing them?
  20. Hi all. I had my sleeve surgery on 8/13. I've had no real complications (minus constipation). I did hit a major stall (17 days) about 10 days post op. Since then I've lost about another 4lbs, making for a total of 23lbs lost in 5 1/2 weeks. I'm stalled again. I did have a surgeon's appointment and before I even brought up the stalls he said he wanted to mention something to me. He asked if I had been diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome. I said no and he said that when he saw inside of my body my fat distribution was consistent with those with Metabolic Syndrome and said he has no doubt that I would have been diagnosed soon without surgery. I asked him what that even meant. He said I would probably lose weight more slowly because it was resilient fat that did NOT want to come off, but once it came off the other fat would start "melting off". When I got home I looked up Metabolic Syndrome. I do sometimes have high blood pressure if I eat high sodium foods, but have never had high blood sugar or triglycerides or any other risk factor. Wondering if anyone else has been diagnosed with this and how slow is slow on weight loss? I don't want to make an excuse for slow weight loss or all these stalls and get complacent. Is it possible this surgery will fail because of this? I'm so nervous now and have a million questions I never thought to ask.
  21. I've been dying to eat refried Beans with melted cheese (after reading posts). Not all that cracked up to be but it's substance. Funny- I made half cup of beans with 1/4 cup cheese. Need my Protein because I refuse to eat any more whey protein powders after this nasty rash. So at my follow up I'm still 14 pounds down all done in the first week - none in second. I'm ok with that. I feel like I've learned so much from these posts and my own research that I kinda know why and what to expect. So thank you veterans of VSG!!! Ummmm - oh they found a bunch of cysts on my ovaries and apparently also a nodule which was biopsied and it did come back abnormal. Oh oh. Gotta see a Gynochologist. I don't have one. Well I do now after her recommendation. Again- not really worried. Thank you all VSG-ers. This has been a wonderful journey. I had some very very minor bumps. I'm doing splendid. They were shocked today that when they pushed on my belly it want tender at all. They also took my staples out. I spazzed over that and they knew I would becuse I'm a freak. I didn't feel a thing! Hahahahahahahahahha. I crack myself up sometimes. Ok- on to finish what I can of these beans and then I must wait 30 minutes to drink. That will take some getting used to. 2 more weeks off of work. Love my doctor! She has been so wonderful!
  22. I am still pre-op. My surgery is in a week. One of my biggest concerns is the extra skin. Does anyone have any comments on this?

    Skinny Wannabe

Congratulations on being banded and welcome to our little forum. I think you'll find by reading posts here that many of still have trouble with evening snacking. Since you have no fill yet it is perfectly normal to feel hungry. With no fill, everything should be passing right through your band. If nothing hurts when you eat, you should be fine. The same advice goes for the treadmill - if it doesn't hurt, you should be OK. Take it easy at first. You're only one week out of surgery. Many of us have that bubbling gurgling sensation. We have lots of different theories on what causes it. For some people it is quite loud. You may be taking too big a bite or not chewing well enough. It's hard to say. Good Luck and please check in often.

    August 2011 Sleevers!

I'm down 53lbs and have started only weighing once a week. I lose on average about 2lbs/week and that is just perfect for me! I'm down from a size 20 to a 14, which is what I wore in high school. I'm tickled pink at the thought of dropping even more. I am disappointed in my exercising efforts, but now I'm planning a trip to Yosemite so I'm using that to motivate me to strengthen my muscles and build stamina so that I can go and enjoy the new me! I am so thankful I made the leap and got this done. I will never regret or be ashamed of having surgery.
