Calorie and carb intake
Frenchie1977 replied to jwagner's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too never could get an answer about how many calories I should be taking in. I am 4 weeks post op. It's easy for me to take in calories, I could easily eat over 1000 a day. I found that sticking to 700/800 calories a day right now works best for my weight loss. I aim for about 30 carbs a day. -
eggs fish, and low to no carb protein drinks. My pre op diet was a meal replacement protein shake for breakfast and lunch, and then I ate 3-4oz. tilapia fillets for dinner. Did this for 10 days, lost 12lbs. Drink water in between meals to reduce cravings and hunger. Also drinking ice water burns more calories then room temp water.

Actually there are things that can be done to soothe a sweet tooth while dieting on the band. I take Protein suppliments that come in shake form and there are some out there on the market that you can toss in the blender with some ice and maybe a banana and the shake that comes out is as good as any "bad for you" shake - but these give you a big shot of protein at the same time so you are benefiting from it and it is not even cheating. Another way to fight a sweet tooth is to get some Protein Bars. You can find these in chocolate and all varieties of flavors. Some have more calories than are strictly required BUT they taste good and they DO provide protein and Vitamins - which is more than you can say for a hershey bar. I think that people with sweets issues CAN work their diet around their need for sweet tasting food - BUT - I think they need to plan for sweets. Most diets seem to require that you skip eating ANYTHING THAT TASTES GOOD - so is it any wonder people break down and cheat? Getting a bunch of sugar free syrups (like those at www.davinvigourmet.com ) and adding them to boring foods can make them "seem" sweeter than they actually are and will help fight that sweet tooth.

I'm not counting calories because i am not able to eat a whole lot. i do have my occasional eating a candy bar because that doesn't get stuck and i know it's wrong and that delays it some, but we're human. i try to get about 64 in, but at times it gets short and exercising yes, but i need to step it up more. i work nights and so i would so much rather sleep than work out, but i know i need to find more time for it. thanks for writing back!!

If you read this forum you will probably see 1-4 topics every day regarding bandsters who have plateaued or believe they have plateaued. I personally don't consider it a plateau until it's about 2 weeks or more old and if you've been busting your butt in the exercise department as well as keeping that calorie count low. Some folks think if they go 3 days without losing a lb they're in a plateau. No way. But to answer your question. I've busted two plateaus lately. Here is how I did it. I averaged about an hour a day with two types of exercising. I did 5 days of intense 20 minute drills where I got my heartrate up to 140+ for a solid 15-20 minutes. I mostly did strength type exercising like lunges, squats, pullups, pushups, crunches etc. Then later in the day I'd go for a 30-60 minute bike ride or I'd play racquetball. The point is, I mixed it up. Don't do the same exercise day in and day out. I went on a no carb/high protein(and veggie) diet for 3 days. Then I went right back to 1200-1400 calories a day. I dropped 3 lbs both times. Like so many others have said, mix it up. Don't let your body get into a rhythym where it's comfortable with the norm. If you're on a very low calorie diet your body will slow it's metabolism way down. Feed it 1200-1400 calories a day for a week and then hit it with 800 a day for 3 or 4 days. That's what works for me. And I know that we all are so different so find something that works for you. But one thing that most of us all share is that we have to mix it up. tmf

so frustrated 4 weeks post op
wildrose1966 replied to melidawn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 5 months out and could probably eat a burrito, but as I am pretty much on a diet right now, I count my calories, my protein and only put 4oz of protein on my plate with some veggies and maybe a small carb. Regardless if I am still hungry or not when I am finished, I am finished. I wait an hour, dring lots of water and snack on fruit or veggies if I am still hungry. Your first 6 weeks are for healing and getting into some good habits. My first fill didn't come for 6 weeks and it was 1cc, 1cc, 1cc,1cc.........5 months, 5cc's. It is a journey not a sprint. -
It's Going to Be a Lifetime
catwoman7 replied to rene50's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
yes == it's definitely a lifestyle change. No way could I eat like I used to. At five years out, I still track everything I eat and try to stay within a certain calorie range to maintain my weight. I also exercise 5-6 days a week now. If I start slacking off, my weight starts going up. Been there.. And BTW - I have never-been-fat friends who have to do this as well to keep from gaining weight, so it's not just us! -
I just got home from an office visit and the Dr. told me to stop with the protein drinks. He also told me that I get enough nutrition with my vitamins, that don't add extra calories.
-
I haven't had any protein drinks since my post-op diet was over. Once I was able to get in enough protein through solid food, I stopped drinking them. They were just disgusting and gave me awful stomach cramping. I manage to get in about 70-80 grams of protein per day (sometimes even more) while staying around 1200 calories.

Water aerobics is a must!
LovetoDeath replied to TXdjvsg's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I tried it for the first time yesterday too!!!!!!! I was so surprised by how I felt. I could really feel my muscles working. I also burned 425 calories for an hour work out! I am going to start doing this twice a week along with my other classes. -
I have a desk job n work 8-4:30, here's what I've been doing: Breakfast I start shortly after I start work about 8:15-30 and I usually have 6oz of the chobani Greek yogurt it takes me about 45 min to an hr to finish it. Then I have lunch at 11:30 but usually don't start eating till closer to noon so far I'm still on soft food n I'm lazy to prepare so I've been eating tuna n 4 crackers I eat about 2oz of tuna. I like tuna so I'm not tired of it yet. Then about 2or 3pm I have a snack like cottage cheese doubles 100 calories or string cheese. N dinner I have about 2oz of chicken in the can, or lentils, or ground turkey I still haven't gotten tired of soft foods yet I know there r more options but this is what's easier for me
-
Whoever came up with these Greek Yogurt 100 Calorie containers is an outstanding person because this is the ONLY thing getting me through my pre-op diet. I can have one of these a day and it's becoming the highlight of my entire day. So thanks, Yoplait!

Anyone Feel Like They Wont Lose?
hbjewelry replied to healthiermom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been on the pre-op diet at under 1000 calories and haven't lost much weight. However, it just makes me realize hoe important this surgery is for me. -
Well, today I didnt lose anything...I think that I went under my regular calorie count yesterday and messed up my bodys way of thought...So today I started counting my calories today to make sure that I got all of them in today...So far I am about 620 calories for today and still have dinner to go...I might end up having to have a little snack before dinner so that I can get a few extra calories...I just dont understand how my surgeon expects me to keep to about 1200 calories a day with just 3 small meals and no snacking...It just dont add up to me...Well, I have several girls at work on a diet now and they are doing a grapefruit diet along with a regular diet..So, its basically eating a grapefruit before each meal but if I were to do that I wouldnt be able to eat my meal...So they let me know that they had read that I could do the sugar free grapefruit juice or find some grapefruit pills to do before I ate my meals...So I will go out tomorrow and find me some sugar free grapefruit juice (if there is such a thing) and try it for several weeks and see how it does me...Something new to try and there is just telling if it will work or not but it never hurts to try

Did you have a calorie limit for the pre-op diet?

The nutritionist at my hospital gave me a 1200 calorie a day pre op menu. I did it for two weeks before surgery. -
2 months post op and frustrated
miiasan replied to India928's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The good news is that you have lost a good bit of weight up til now. I can relate to your frustration, though. I am 4 weeks out today and although I lost 7 lbs the first week after surgery (on top of what I gained during the surgery) I have yet to lose a single ounce more. That is 3 weeks - no weight loss. I am getting in both my liquids and my Protein. I am exercising every day. I was actually losing better before the surgery! Nevertheless, I have faith that all things will work out eventually. I cannot go on forever eating only 600 calories and working off over 500 every day without eventually losing. It will be a topic of conversation with my nutritionist at my appointment tomorrow though! I think you are probably just in a stall. I have read about them a lot on this forum. As long as you are doing what you are supposed to be doing things should work out. I think sometimes the body just needs to catch up with what has been happening. If the stall goes on for more than a week or so, it probably wouldn't hurt for you to call your nutritionist. As for me, I am hoping that my body is still in shock from the surgery and one of these days will recover. Try to relax and follow your routine - perhaps stay off the scale for a bit. Good luck -
Weightloss stall
#Redy4chg.org replied to LindsayRN's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I drink Vitamin Water which has some calories and plain water with water flavoring Mio's. I hate the taste of plain water. I also have flavored Propel water. I drink herbal teas and occasional hot chocolate for a treat. I have ready to drink Protein shakes. I like Total Lean by GNC and Muscle Milk. I bought cream of chicken to go Soups in a drinkable can that's really good. I drank chicken broth and had cream of broccoli Soup and veggie soup. That's about it. I'm not really creative in the kitchen and I can't bring myself to purée something that should be chewed lol. A lot of people on here have some great recipes that sound good. -
Not losing weight in 4 days is not a stall. My doc says that a platoe is when you are not losing in months. I know it's hard but sometimes is better not to get on the scale every day. Consider that you are intaking lots of fluids and since your food intake is not much your body stores fluids and calories to survive. Your body is learning to adjust to a different life style. Also if you are not intaking enough fluids that can affect your progress. So do not stress over 4 days that you have not lost. Eventually weight loss will become slower but keep in mind that is not about how many pounds you lose but about the % of overweight that you have to lose. The more you lose, the smaller that percetange of exess weight you have to lose becomes. In my case I sometimes don't see any changes on the scale for days or even weeks but I can feel that my clothes fit better so I realize I am still losing inches. Don't feel discuraged or anxious, it is happening! just keep up the good work!!!!

You can eat right, get your calories, protein and vitamins in, but you will most likely still experience the hair loss. My doctor told me it would be 18 months to 2 years until my hair was finally back to its pre-op state. My extreme hair loss stopped before my year was up, but it was still coming out, just a bit more slowly. Once I got my calories up to about 1200 and maintained there for a couple months, I was then able to observe normal hair loss. Now, as 22 months out I can say that my hair is ALMOST restored to its original fullness.

HI Daniel, welcome to the boards! I totally get what you are saying. I honestly wondered how some little band would keep me from feeling so hundgry, I mean, come on, we aren't cutting anything out of the system here, right? Wrong, so wrong, the difference was amazing, I was truly NOT HUNGRY!! How is that possible I thought to myself, but there it was. Now, I am about a month out from having had surgery and the swelling has definately gone away so my restriction is far less (my dietician described it as being like a bucket with a huge hole in it), I am still feeling less hungry than before. And, I decided to track my food calories as well as the Protein and I am eating so much less than I was before and truly honestly not feeling the same need for food as before! Facing down the need to have this surgery is serious and give yourself time to work through it, but know that you are the only one who can make this decision, you will know if it is right, follow your heart. Don't worry about not being able to imagine yourself skinny, I don't have any idea what that would be like, so I just imagine the clothes I wear now getting baggy! It's already starting and that's motivation too! Good luck and keep us all posted!

My Dr. said absolutely no to anything carbonated. Soda, beer (that one hurt), anything. And if that's part of the price I have to pay then that's the deal. I will not drink a carbonated beverage. My nutrishonist went as far as saying she doesn't want me to get any calories from beverages. They will pour right through the band and defeat the purpose of having it. So no fruit juice either. I will have an adult beverage in social situations but never one with carbonation.

December 2012 Sleevers, Sound Off!
SamED replied to SamED's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think it's totally normal to want the scale to move! It's a natural way to measure success. I'm a scale jumper myself. I need to NOT get on every day or two.. *sigh* You look incredible, BTW! And 75 pounds?! Wow!!! I graze as well... I seem to keep myself in check at work, as there's not as much time to graze.. but being home is the worst! I do treat myself to a 100 calorie bag of popcorn every day or two. And I fall off the proverbial wagon on the regular. But, I get back up again... I keep going! I'm down 80 - 82 pounds. I've gone from a size 28 to an 18 (almost 16). I feel great!!!! But, the slowed weightloss hurts my ego and therefore my progress :'( I need to watch the grazing... make better choices when I'm out... and NOT run to the gas station during work for snacks! Old habits die hard... -
2 week preop full liquid diet 1000-1200cal
michellew1 replied to lornabohannon2014's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is what I am doing: It is very similar to yours 7:00-Shake, Multivitamin, Calcium 10:00-B12 12:00-Shake, Multivitamin, Calcium 2:00-Shake 6:00-Chicken broth, Calcium 10:00-Iron And 32oz+ of water That equals-520 calories (They said that I needed at least 1000)-96 grams of protein (They said that I needed at least 68) I hope that I am doing it right. Good luck! Where are you having your surgery? -
I dont drink them and never have and I dont focus on Protein either. Its just not a big thing here in Australia, none of the doctors here focus on it, and we all lose weight fine here. I also havent wasted away to a muscle-less marshmallow. There's 1001 ways to skin a cat. At the end of the day it comes down to calories in v calories out, whether you believe that high levels of protein are necessary or not. If you're really into lifting weights and adding muscle, then perhaps you need higher levels of protein than the next person and shakes are a good way to get it if you like them.
