    New to Site.

Hi Smiletracy, I do have a surgical date, infact it is this thursday 11/8. I really like the staff there at the weight loss surgical center. I have to admit that I am a bit nervous but I am ready to get it done. I think that you will really like them.

    Liver shrink questions

Hello From what I was told the liver shrinks due to the weight loss. Most people have what's called a fatty liver due to weight. When on liquid diet, the liver shrinks making it easier for the Surgury.

    It's time to say hello

I hope the insurance comes through. I have been overweight all of my life, I have not been my current weight since I was a teen. It has been less than two months since surgery and it has already been worth the risk. My diabetes numbers are looking better too. I wish you the best!

    Desperate!

Hello! I am new here. I found this forum while searching for a Doc. to get a fill. I had the lap band done last July through Belight weight & doctors in Detroit. I have not had much help from them regarding my problem. We moved & due to weather & the move had not been able to make it back to Detroit since Ocotober! I am currently in Wisconsin & am trying to find another doctor in driving distance to get a fill. I have not gained any weight since October. However, I have not lost any either. Has it been too long? What does this mean for me? Will I ever be able to find a docotor in my area? Was this move the ruin of my lap band? HELP! If anyone knows any of these answers I'd greatly appreciate if you'd take the time to let me know. THANKS!

    Hello! Hello! I'm new!

I can help a bit....My sister also had cancer of the thyroid, both sides removed. She went on to have RNY and has lost 110 pounds and kept it all off. Another friend of mine and my OTHER sister just had the sleeve. Both were on thyroid medication and have lost alot of weight and are now OFF that medication. So, while everyone is different, I would say your chances are pretty good to be off the meds, and you will lose! (I promise) Good Luck to you!

    2 weeks post op

Hi! Thanks for a reply! I am really excited about this surgery. I am hoping to loose around 60-70lbs. I started at 257lbs. two weeks ago and I am starting my third week at 238lbs. I am 5'5 and 34 years old. I am a mother of two a 6 month old girl and a 2 year old boy. I need the energy to keep up with them Ha-Ha. I have been heavy my whole life, so I am really looking forward to next summer in a bathing suit. How far out are you? Did your weight come off easy? They, the Dr. said I would not get a fill until my 8 week visit. Is this normal? I don't read much on exercise? Is anyone really committed to exercising. I have been walking with my kids in the neighborhood, but I am still not 100% feeling up to it yet. Ya! I am following my Dr. advise and reading all my books. These few weeks are going to be the hardest, I think. Are you eating soild food, if so what?

    2 weeks post op

Hi! Theresa: I am just starting my third week, so I am just on cream Soup and cream of wheat, which seem to be ok. I just seem to be hungry, or a feeling of emptyness. I know these foods are probably just running thru me ha-ha. I had my surgery in Port Huron, MI. Dr. Boutt did it. A wonderful dr. I started at 257 I am now at 238 and holding??. I feel better already. I sure hope this works. I am looking forward to next summer in a bathing suit Ha-Ha! My surgery was wonderful. I hardly had any pain. I am still sore on the outside, probably on the inside too, but I really feel good. I just don't want to get disappointed cuz my weight is not coming off faster. Where do you live? How far out are you on your surgery? Talk to you soon Thanks Janine

    Another Newbie :)

Thank you and I will. I really need to find out how to get those cute little weight tickers in my post.
  10. You need to check your insurance. At the seminars I attended this question came up, and the answer was that they use the beginning weight of you six-month diet to determine eligibility. But again, check your insurance policy and surgeon's office to be sure.
  11. I have been obese a long time and I hate it. I have a gym membership and try to eat healthy. A vegan diet. I lost 30 pounds, but still over 100 pounds overweight. If I get the surgery, which my Dr says I 'm a slam dunk case. I weight 270 and am 5'11 I don't want to die trying to.get healthy

    overweight and sick...

Surgery is never an easy decision. I felt like you do. I was getting heavier and heavier and I hated looking at myself in the mirror and cringed at the thought of buying clothes. Not to mention I was short of breath when walking and tieing my shoes. I took the plunge and am happy I did. I'm down 45 lbs so far and feel a whole lot better. I'm not in the green zone yet but the weight is gradually but definitely coming off.

    Craving Badly

That little bit that you ate at the party did not make you gain a pound. And why are you putting yourself through that by weighing the next day. I think that your scale should be locked away and only come out once a week as for some it can be a devastating thing. Weighing daily is never a good idea and can defeat everything that you are trying. Please....please.....pleae......lock that scale away or take it to the neighbors but do not weigh on a daily basis.
  14. Hola Everyone!! I just want to share a lil about me, I'm 23 years old, been struggling with thyroid problems and gainin weight since I was 16 years old, went from 140lbs to 180 in 6months.. 15. I am brand new to this forum. I have just sent in all my paperwork to the Bariatric Coordinator RN who will schedule all the pre-op Dr visits. I am 54 yrs old, will have surgery done by Dr. Sufficool in Rapid City, SD. At first I was so excited, now I'm terrified. I have had 8 other surgeries (not weight related) in my life & get more scared with each one. I keep thinking about how I will feel, all the things I'll be able to do, all the health problems I can kiss goodbye when I lose the weight. I'm just flat scared of the surgery (will it go right? will I throw up? will I be allergic to the band? will I be able to stick to the various diets?). What a worry wart I am!

    7 Weeks Post Op

Its been 7 weeks since my life has changed and I'm happy. I turned 57 years old on July 27 - Yea Me!!! So far, I have lost 37 lbs and gone from a size 26 to a size 22: These are the things I have noticed since my RNY surgery July 16. 1) Menopausal hot flashes have stopped!!!! Thank you Jesus!!!! 2) No more arthritic pain in my lower back. I can walk distances now. No longer need to ride the buggy in Walmart! 3) Bowling balls do not fit my hand anymore. Had to get the finger inserts changed to a smaller size!!!! 4) I'm a "cheap date" now. Husband doesnt have to spend much money on me when we go out to dinner! 5) Everyone is noticing my weight loss and complimenting and encouraging me to continue. 6) I have "fallen out of love" with fried foods. 7) I have "fallen out of love" with Pepsi, Coca Cola and RC sodas. 8) I am no longer taking blood pressure medication 9) The entire surgical experience was pleasant (only had 3-4 days of surgical gas discomfort). Incisions were closed with a "crazy glue" type of substance that fell off as the incisions healed. 10) Finally have learned the consequences behind overeating and eating too fast and not chewing food properly (I ended up in the bed, in a fetal position calling for my mama!!!!!) I'm so happy with the way things are going. Looks like I'm losing on an average of 5 lbs per week, trying to lose 150 lbs. My biggest problem: Laziness is still a problem when it comes to exercising though. I just can't seem to go to the gym. In the meantime, I'm walking places every chance I get. Just trying to keep moving.
  17. Hello everyone near and far. My name is Nessa I am 29 years old, I started my journey Nov 2011 weighing 488.5lbs. I had VSG 1/17/12 and have lost 133.5lbs. Since my surgery I dropped down to 353lbs had two kids and from that I have gained 35lbs I believe my math could be off I am roughly 389lbs as of today. So I went and talked with my surgeon on how I can get back on track because I pretty much been holding on to the 300s for the past three years. They strongly think I should think about having RNY done. So hear I am guess just looking for more info and possibly read some experiences from that and gain a friend or two in the process. thank you for reading. Sent from my HTCD100LVWPP using the BariatricPal App
  18. I was lucky enough to have two doctor's appointments this week - my three month follow up with my local bariatric doctor and my PCP. I lamented to my bariatric doctor about my stall. How I haven't lost anything in the past 18 days. I was kind of whiney about it. She just looked at me like I grew a 2nd head. She said, "You're going great. You've lost a total of 50 pounds. What was your expectation?" I got to thinking about that - really, what number was going to make me happy? If it was 53 pounds would I automatically to over the happy side? What about 63 pounds, is that the magic number? She pointed out all the good things going on - lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, my ability to walk seemingly forever pain-free, my increased energy level, etc. All good stuff, right? So why am I so hard on myself about the number on the scale. She asked how often I'm weighing - I'm back to weighing every day. She told me to stop that, but I weighed again today. The best thing she said about my weight was this - "If you graph your weight loss, the line won't be linear, it's going to be more of stair step." And you know, she's right. I graphed my weight loss to date and it looks like stair steps. This morning I went to my PCP whom I haven't seen since late-October, about 2 weeks before surgery. Her jaw dropped when she saw me. She cannot believe the difference in my appearance. Then we started going over the labs and she was amazed. She actually said "You are glowing! You look happy. Your eyes are clear and bright. The transformation is amazing." Sometimes we get so hard on ourselves because we're not losing a the rate in which we think we should. "I'm a slow loser!" "So-and-so is losing so much faster than me!" We need to STOP! This is marathon, not a sprint. I didn't get to 256 pounds overnight, I'm certainly not going to lose it overnight. Sometimes it's good to step back and look at things from a different angle.

  20. I'm 41 married and father of 2 boys .. used to be athletic but stopped after graduated from Univ. and started career I started gaining weight each month .. bounced through diet sometimes but always maintained way up on scale .. studied for a year or more what to do and decided it's surgery my solution .. At first I decided wd my wife and a famous doctor here in Cairo the gastric bypass .. we made the pre op analysis and checkups All was clear and set the op last year's May 7th.. I'm from Alexandria it's 220 km far from Cairo so I drove my car early dawn reached hospital, parked front of entrance and never was able to open door and jump inside hospital .. I freezed!! Something told me Go back don't do it don know why?? So I turned to my wife who kept encouraging me all the way and to her eyes told her straight I'll not do this bypass surgery!! She started to cry I dropped inside hospital front desk to tell them I'm not doing it and asked them to inform Dr. as soon as they can. I returned back took my time to study All and gave myself one year to sort it out if not I'll return doing bypass again!! 3 months back I was in a mall in Cairo met a fellow that I don't know who stopped me and told me you are 180 kgs!!! He is normal size, not obese so he struck me telling me he was like me one year back!! Told me about Plication and how it turned his life way better and how he committed himself to advise everyone who was like him to do it. I got his Surgeon details in another city 180 km from us went there and met him and liked it All. Only problem it's away from my hometown not very comfortable I started to search in my hometown and found a v good surgeon a brother of one of my best colleagues in Faculty who made it frequently and got v good results and decided he's the one! Today I completed one month post op .. feeling gr8 .. eating good .. lost 20 KG (44 pounds) 10 days pre op + 1 month post op .. feeling more normal now .. small portions fill it in wd satisfaction and can stay long without craving if ever as before!! No craving no bad mood without eating nor drinking problem is it goes to Water as well so water intake at first dropped dramatically now begin to increase it so it's vital and so imp. Best of luck in yours did the right choice and you'll begin a new you a much better self confident You .. post op only 2 days of disorder and some mild to normal pain then way better ev day .. best luck and best wishes

    Another Lurker ~ Newbie!

When I made my ticker, I put in the highest weight I have been, which was at the end of last year. Which was when, I started doing Zumba twice a week and eating lower carbs. In February, I saw my doctor to start my diet/weight monitoring (insurance requirement) and he recommended a reduce calorie diet. Then in March, I started a 6 week course with a Nutritionist (again, part of the insurance requirement) and it just ended last week. SO, long story short, I have lost weight REALLY trying with exercise, reduce calorie/carb intake, and tips/counseling from a Nutritionist. I have done this many times before, but as with everyone else, my weight loss is not sustainable.

    Another Lurker ~ Newbie!

I am excited to say, I am approved for surgery! I really thought BCBSNJ (Direct 10) would write back asking for the full 6 months of diet/nutrition physician counseling since I only did 3 months and corresponding 6 week nutrition class. Of course, I sent them every weight history I could find in a nice little spreadsheet with what diet I was on for each date. Plus a copy of the CURVES diet and their whole exercise schedule for the 2006 year. I am so shocked and surprised! My surgery date is scheduled for 07/06/09 (since I have so much going on in the month of June). I cannot wait!!!!!!!

    Operation New Leaf

Ugh, I didn't even think about that - sodium being too high = Fluid retention. It's amazing - I went through all this nutrition stuff in health class in high school and sure, I learned it superficially, but now it's sinking in how everything is linked to everything else! Oy! The nutritionist and surgeon's office gave me a binder - this GBMC-COMP program really is comprehensive as all get-out - with all kinds of resources, sample diets, etc. It also has all the rx forms for my preop testing and explanations of what each test is, plus information on the postop diet that doesn't even apply to me (yet!) and stuff like that. The numbers I should be meeting are: <200g carbs, 70-90g Protein, <60g fats, 1800 cals. Right now I'm meeting the carbs and cals and working hard on the protein. The fats is still high so that will be my next big focus, and, of course, the sodium. (Goodbye my best friend salt, how I will miss you...) Haha. I haven't had soda in a whole week. Nothing carbonated at all. It's been surprisingly easy after the first couple days, but I am drinking a lot of mix-ins - Crystal Light and stuff. Maybe that is not helping the sodium - I'll check into it. I'm starting from 'scratch' - no lap-band before sleeving, so I don't know how my weight loss will go. I expect it'll be quick for a month or so and then will start to slow down - hoping that I'm wrong. Thanks for your support here. It means a lot, even though I'm so far out from a surgery date still. Just gotta walk the path and make it there - the gateway to the rest of my life!
