Ask for an EGD to stretch the scarred tissue a bit for an opening--they did this for a friend of mine for GERD. Then, after healing, maybe your revision with VSG would work. good luck! Thank you all for the well-wishes; this board is such a blessing! I'm so sore today; they spent an hour inside me cutting out adhesions and scar tissue so I guess I should expect to be sore. Tiffykins and I share the same surgeon, Dr Michel; I trust his decision, he said that I may still have quite a bit of restriction due to the very narrow scarring (picture an hour glass). It is that narrow scarring that didn't leave enough tissue to create a sleeve; I'm praying that it will eventually stretch just enough to get a sleeve in there. It was the perfect set-up for an RNY with the pouch on top all they would have to do is cut off the narrow scarring, hook up the intestines then Voila! another nutritional deficiency case walking out the door. It sounds like Swizzly lives in a place of good values and common sense; I wish all bariatric surgeons would ban the band! And I can say my quality of life is much improved without the horrible GERD!! I will still be scanning this board looking for people who are trying to decide whether to get the band or sleeve, you can bet I'll be chiming-in with my opinion. Whether you all know it or not, you are my friends that I turn to for a pick-me-up; I know I can always count on being inspired by someone or something said on here so Thank You! I hope to be telling an inspirational story of my own someday (soon I hope).

Thanks, new_beginnings! I've been dragging my heels with more than a little apprehension about putting my faith in another WLS. I found a new, more experienced surgeon and have been filling out paperwork before having to even go into the office. Once I get off my butt and send in this novel(!), they will send into the insurance company for approval. It's nice to see others like you, Susan, Irene, Tiffy, et al having a such better experience with the VSG!! That's exactly what the nurse at my new surgeon's office said. She said that there are different surgeries because they don't all work for all. Even if I weren't going to revise, it'll be SO nice to get the crap band <stolen> out!
  3. 2goldengirl Have you heard of insurance covering a revision from lap band to sleeve due to too many issues even with bmi being 32 not 35

There are a lot of revision lap-banders here and we all are so sorry to hear about the damage you sustained. I am also furious when I see lap-band ads or "medical" shows discussing lap-band. The real problems are never discussed with any sincerity - especially the reversable claim. I would also recommend that you get a second opinion on your damage and possibility for a sleeve - it seems that if they can do an RnY, they can do a sleeve? Take the time to heal and take care of yourself. You will get better!!! Lara

Monica, congratulations on your revision; happy healing! You say you would have been stuck with the band but I really can't believe there is even 1 person on this planet that will be able to keep their band as a lifelong weight loss tool. Even people with no outward problems/complications suffer extensive stomach, liver, scarring and adhesion damage. I hope the band will be banned soon; I will be telling anyone who will listen about the horrors of the band. I feel so much better now that it is out of my body; I really had no idea just how miserable I had become. Anyway, I'm happy for you and knowing that there are good band to sleeve revisions gives me hope. Gas dissapating prayers goin' out to you! And Thank you to everyone for the "love" that is so freely outpoured; this is just the best, shiniest spot on the whole internet!! Y'all rock!!

What to expect in the hospital

I just spoke with a nurse who had bypass and also works at the hospital where our surgeon is. She suggested buying an ultra cheap egg crate topper to put on top of the bed as she said she could never get comfortable in the bed. I would have never thought of that but do remember some very uncomfortable hospital beds!
  7. So, I just realized that today is my 6th year Bandiversary. Wow! I can't believe it. Life changed so much in the past six years. Got married, had two babies... and am about to deliver my third. Up until this pregnancy, I had maintained 65 pounds out of a 95 pound loss with absolutely no fill. Prior to being Banded, I had never lost more than 17 pounds... and that involved being at a vegan ultra low-fat spa for a month. (Gained it back in two weeks.) I was never the person who lost a lot of weight, and then gained it back and then some. I was the person who never lost more than 5 pounds. The person who never felt full until I had my Band. I've had some trouble with trying to refill my Band post pregnancies... but other than that, nothing negative. No reflux, slips, erosions, etc. Band looks the same as it did six years ago on the x-rays. I'm going to try to refill again after this pregnancy... so we'll see. In about six months, I'll see where I'm at. I may go back to my normal setpoint, -65 pounds with no fill. Fills may work, and I may be less. Or I may be pretty much where I am now. If I decide to go with a revision, I'd probably go with a VSG. But, right now, I'm doing a wait and see.

    Pre-gastric bypass

    From the album: Janelle

I was sleeved in 2016, and due to circumstances, I could not control, death in my family of three people, I started gaining weight. I lost my husband in 2021 to a heart attack. I have decided to go with gastric bypass to take care of my GERD.

    Can I Slap You Now?

Well in reading your post her comment was that her friend who had gastric bypass gets sick everytime she eats. How is this statement negative towards you? You could have pleasantly stated how well you are doing yadda, yadda. Maybe this would have lead to conversation about not every patient having a negative experience. Just my two cents.
  10. I was just told today I may have to get the bypass instead of the sleeve since I have barrets esophagus and some reflux I never knew I had. I'm looking into an April surgery. Any one else out there getting ready from Pittsburgh or near by? I'm actually in Washington Pa

    Telling family?

So my sleeve is scheduled for April and I think it is time to tell my family. I am very nervous because I don't know what to expect. I have an aunt who had some complications with a bypass so I am sure it will be brought up. I am not necessarily afraid to tell them, but I just don't feel like dealing with problems. As far as I am concerned it is really no one's business what I do, but my wife wants me to tell at least my parents and siblings. I am totally excited for my surgery and my wife and kids are totally on my side. I have all of my research ready for them and I am ready for questions. Just not sure how to tell them. Any Advice?? Thanks!!

    Diabetes & insulin

I had the RNY Gastric Bypass, but I had been diabetic since at least 2003 or earlier. Unfortunately I never recognized it for what it was at the time (enjoying the weight loss that came with being a hardcore diabetic) so I didn't see a doctor about it until mid-2006 when I finally started taking insulin. Even though my blood sugar was better controlled, I never really got a good handle on it, and my dosage just kept getting bigger and bigger. It's been a while since I thought of it (probably some of my older posts have the exact numbers), but I was taking something like 200 units of Levemir per day and nearly 150-200 units of Novolog per meal. My A1C was still pretty high. As much as I had hoped that the surgery was going to be a cure all, I think the many years of being diabetic (including the time between 2003-2006 when I never knew I was diabetic) and the amounts of insulin I was taken will keep me from being fully "cured". Only time will tell. My next endo appointment is next month so will see what he has to say. When I talked with him last September he had hopes that I might be off the insulin by now, but I can definitely tell that's not going to be the case.

Pre-Op Diet.. part of that 60-70%?

@@Ruth1ess What you are asking is if you can bio-hack your way to more weight loss. No one can give you an answer to that. The 60-70% is an average, It is a completely arbitrary number. Doctors use it because that is the average and its is a good number. Losing that amount of weight is life changing for obese people and can end a lot of medical problems. If you use a calculator like this http://www.obesitycoverage.com/weight-loss-surgeries/gastric-bypass/how-much-can-i-expect-to-lose This is what the calculator estimates I can lose at my starting weight This is what the calculator estimates I can lose from the weight I am at right now. I have lost 101 lbs in 6.5 months with the sleeve. The weight lost estimated from my start is 222. The weight lost estimate from where I am right now is 182. The start weights are 101 pounds apart but the end result is only a 40 pound difference. Is it worth it to wait and have to lose weight taking the chances on being hungry, to possible lose an little extra? It might be to you. The amount of weight you will be able to lose on your own before surgery is unlikely to be that much so the differences will be minor. I would have never lost 100lbs on my own. I would never lose more than 30-50 on my own and I always gained it back. I am only 6.5 months out and I have lost 101 lbs basically effortlessly. I haven't been hungry, and after the first 6 weeks I have had plenty of energy. I am more active, but I don't run. I walk, I do yoga, and I lift weights. I do things that don't stress my body and I am still losing at a fast pace. The way I am dropping weight right now 10-14lbs a month and it isn't slowing, as I lose more weight and am more active, it is coming off faster. I expect that I will blow right past that first lost estimate from my start of 365 to 222, I will probably be past 222 long before my one year anniversary. I expect to keep losing long after my 1 year anniversary just because I would have to be really dedicated to eating, basically eat all day to get above my resting metabolic rate. So try that calculator and see if you think the difference is worth waiting for. Just remember it is just an estimate and it is arbitrary.

    Deciding the Sleeve

I think you'll get mostly positives for the sleeve since you're in the sleeve forum.....but I decided on sleeve because I don't want to worry with multiple adjustments and I know while doing my research I saw way too many complications with lap band....To me the decision between lap band and sleeve was an easy one....the one that took a little more thought was decided between sleeve and bypass.......and for that the bypass just seemed more extreme than what I wanted to do.
  16. I go for my first consultation tomorrow. I have been a sponge and taking in everything I could read on gastric bypass. Today I called my insurance just to find out what the pre-qualifiers are. I was shocked to find out that there are none and if the surgeon sends in the paperwork and they approve it then I can be qualified for surgery immediately. Everything I have read suggests insurance companies want periods of diet and other prequalifiers....is this possible that an insurance company can be that easy and literally allow the decision to be yours and your surgeons!? Any comments are welcome. Thanks...and great forum! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    10 years after

I too am 10 years out. I was getting hungry, gained about 35-40 lbs. then, I started watching some documentaries about our food supply like "food, Inc.", "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" ....all on Netflix. Anyway, it changed everything . I bought a Vitamix, and now I 'drink' 6-8 servings of fruits and veggies 5-7 days per week in green smoothies. I lost 40 lbs and have kept it off for over a year...I don't crave a lot of the stuff I used to, and don't count calories or anything like that. My weight before gastric bypass was 344, and I hover around 176-182 now, which is just where I want to be. Best wishes!!

    Sleeve or bypass

I agree it seemed less invasive and more straightforward my doctor also said the risk for complications is higher in bypass then with sleeve also my aunt had gastric bypass about 10 years ago and has been really sick also I didn't like the malabsorption Factor the dumping syndrome and the fact that it seemed like I would have to watch what I ate even more closely with gastric bypass like what if I'm at a new restaurant and it has something my new couch wouldn't agree with dumping syndrome byterrified me and the thought of my intestines being rearranged I didn't like that I am higher BMI patient BMI 52 but I love to workout so I don't see this being an issue but that is what led me to my decision.
  21. From what I have read the results are the same as the traditional bypass. Seems like not many people have done this version.
  22. Hello All, Any insights on Mini gastric bypass VS gastric bypass? I am scheduled for mini gastric bypass in Mexico via Mexico Bariatric Centre on March 12 2016.

It's My Blog I'll Say What i Want To

Guess who bashed my band. It was my primary doctor. She wanted me to be sleeved or have bypass. Why you say? Because none of her banded patients ever lost more than 40 lbs. Well I needed to lose at least 100 lbs. and I got banded anyway. I wanted less invasive and that's what I had. And guess what....I've lost 126 lbs. and....I am now smaller than the doctor. Sweeeet!!

    2/24/09 dr. Rumbaut

HI I scheduled my surgery today for 2/24 with Dr. Rumbaut in Monterrey, Mexico. I am having the lap band done. I have three close family friends that used him for gastric bypass. I have been super excited till I started receiving all my emails from the doctor to prepare me for surgery. Now I am getting very nervous! I have a million questions it seems like. Is it safe to travel to Mexico for surgery? How bad are the scars? I don't guess it's just the jitters. If someone could please help me calm my nerves before surgery I would greatly appreciate it. There are 2 people scheduled ahead of me that day, I wish I knew who they were so maybe we could stay in contact thru this thing!! Any words of advice or words of encouragement??? Hope to hear from ya'll!! Laken :scared2:
  25. I got banded here and they say you qualify with a BMI of 27 or greater. They are located in California, USA. I hope that helps. A number of years ago my BMI was much lower than it is now so I know how you feel. Good luck. If you want my name or have any other questions PM me.
