This is prob a stupid question but would love to know the answer to encourage me to drink!! Why is water so important to our weight loss? I have seen people posting to drink more to break stalls or reasons for inadequate weight loss etc. What function does drinking high volumes of liquid serve?

They only remove them if they don't fall off on their own. Sometimes if they use glue too they don't come off at all. If they are still on at your two week apt they will most the time take them off. it is better to hold your incision closed to minimize scaring but if they look like they are getting infected under the strips they need to come off so the incision can dry out.

Yep, all of that is normal. I still don't have regular bowel movements (I'm about 5 weeks post-op). I don't know your nationality; I'm Black and my scars are healed but darker than the rest of my skin. I didn't think my port scar was ever going to look normal, but I'm sure the line will fade and look great later. I bought Vitamin E and put it on my scars daily (be sure to wait until they're closed). I think it took 3 -4 weeks for them to heal. Good luck!

Benadryl (children's liquid), warm bath with Aveeno oatmeal powder, calamine lotion & aloe Vera (after the bath). That's what my doctor recommended for me and it made me feel so much better. I had an allergic reaction to something in my chewable Vitamin that caused the severe itching and all-over rash that accompanied it. I still do the Aveeno bath at least once a week and it is heavenly! I would check with your doctor if your symptoms get bad and see what he recommends. Best of luck and I feel for you!

The giant sucking sound of Mexican Medical Tourism By Dana Blankenhorn | April 30, 2010, 7:25 AM PDT 15 Comments more + While most headlines about Mexico involve immigration or drugs, there is another giant sucking sound coming from our south. That’s the sound of medical tourism dollars. (Shown is the Atlantic Health International Hospital in Mazatlan, from the Mexico Buyers Guide blog.) Last week the Institute of the Americas hosted a conference in La Jolla, near San Diego, about the topic. The Deloitte Center for Medical Solutions predicted a surge in Mexican medical tourism with the end of the recession. Many Americans already get their drugs in Mexico — there are 345 pharmacies near the Tijuana border alone — but now we’re talking about real procedures. Baby boomers especially are being targeted. The La Jolla Light covered the event, noting that an angioplasty costing up to $80,000 in San Diego could cost one-tenth as much across the border. The reason is the same one fruit pickers use in taking Mexican workers — cost. A nurse who makes $75,000 here may make $12,000 there, and malpractice rates are low, too. Of the nearly 1 million Americans who went to Mexico for medical care last year, about half were not Mexican immigrants. UPDATE: The figure from the La Jolla Light article is 952,000 traveling to Mexico for care. The article also notes there are 1 million American retirees now living in Mexico, getting regular care from Mexican doctors. A lot of privately-owned hospitals are now being built in Mexico to meet American demand, with state of the art facilities. Medical Tourism Corp. adds that in addition to cost savings, some procedures that are new or not-yet approved in the U.S. are commonplace there. The Joint Commission International accredits medical tourism facilities, and Health-Tourism.com lists eight major facilities there that are accredited. The site also offers a price comparison, noting that many common procedures cost 50-75% less there, and the savings on heart operations there are really spectacular. I wrote here in 2008 about how Mexican medical tourism was growing more organized, and last year about how companies that self-insure risk are encouraging patients to travel, sharing the savings with them. Maybe that giant sucking sound Ross Perot heard years ago was just coming from a dentist’s chair.

At what point did you feel like you got stuck at a weight that seemed like you were holding there for 2-3 weeks? What did you do to move the scale or what did it take? Most days I usually get 50-60 grams of protein but that is an average. I know I never get my full water in as well. I do exercise 4-5x week for an hour. Just feeling like I'm stuck and it's just been 1full month on the 21st?

Hi guys, I was sleeved on Dec 14. On puréed foods now which I've been tolerating. Started New whey about a week ago and 5 days in, started getting very sharp gas pains making it hard to move. Dr's office said to back off the New Whey, which I have, but now the other Protein drinks are giving me the same problem (and I've been tolerating them since day 2) So I'm not getting much protein in at all. Is this something that subsides? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I've been super busy the past 3 weeks and have slipped into some "grab & go" habits that aren't serving me very well. No loss for 2 weeks and today got on the scale and was up almost 2 pounds. I'm close to goal but it's been very elusive because I've gotten lazy about my choices. Anyone have some good standby meals that are quick and easy when you're on the go? One of my problems has been not making time for meals so I've noticed I grab a little of this and a little of that......which really translates to grazing all afternoon. Old habits die hard............ What are some favorites for healthy, high protein, low carb, bariatric friendly choices? Think it's time to clean out my kitchen and start over. Easy to get a little cocky since I've gotten closer to my goal weight.......which is exactly what I don't want to do!! Thanks for any input!!

Quick & Easy Suggestions?
1poundatatime replied to chuswysly's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm only about 6 weeks out, but I keep the fridge stocked with cheese strings, meat, greek yogurt, apple sauce for snacks. If I need a quick meal that I haven't prepared for I have several cans of soup in the pantry (kinda high in sodium, but better than some options). I also set aside leftovers from the night before for lunches. -
I am not sure about it either but I had my period 2 days after surgery and I haven't had one in almost a YEAR! I never thought I would be excited about shark week. My surgeon said that the weight loss will definitely help with PCOS.

I lost 30 pounds my first 2 weeks from surgery. Now I have not lost a pound for 10 days. Is this normal? I regularly exercise and eat as my surgeon suggest. I have lost inches during this phase. I am just wondering how long will these plateaus last and what should I do while experiencing them?

Hi all. I had my sleeve surgery on 8/13. I've had no real complications (minus constipation). I did hit a major stall (17 days) about 10 days post op. Since then I've lost about another 4lbs, making for a total of 23lbs lost in 5 1/2 weeks. I'm stalled again. I did have a surgeon's appointment and before I even brought up the stalls he said he wanted to mention something to me. He asked if I had been diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome. I said no and he said that when he saw inside of my body my fat distribution was consistent with those with Metabolic Syndrome and said he has no doubt that I would have been diagnosed soon without surgery. I asked him what that even meant. He said I would probably lose weight more slowly because it was resilient fat that did NOT want to come off, but once it came off the other fat would start "melting off". When I got home I looked up Metabolic Syndrome. I do sometimes have high blood pressure if I eat high sodium foods, but have never had high blood sugar or triglycerides or any other risk factor. Wondering if anyone else has been diagnosed with this and how slow is slow on weight loss? I don't want to make an excuse for slow weight loss or all these stalls and get complacent. Is it possible this surgery will fail because of this? I'm so nervous now and have a million questions I never thought to ask.

I am still pre-op. My surgery is in a week. One of my biggest concerns is the extra skin. Does anyone have any comments on this?

Congratulations on being banded and welcome to our little forum. I think you'll find by reading posts here that many of still have trouble with evening snacking. Since you have no fill yet it is perfectly normal to feel hungry. With no fill, everything should be passing right through your band. If nothing hurts when you eat, you should be fine. The same advice goes for the treadmill - if it doesn't hurt, you should be OK. Take it easy at first. You're only one week out of surgery. Many of us have that bubbling gurgling sensation. We have lots of different theories on what causes it. For some people it is quite loud. You may be taking too big a bite or not chewing well enough. It's hard to say. Good Luck and please check in often.

August 2011 Sleevers!
dramagirl28 replied to meggspeggs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm down 53lbs and have started only weighing once a week. I lose on average about 2lbs/week and that is just perfect for me! I'm down from a size 20 to a 14, which is what I wore in high school. I'm tickled pink at the thought of dropping even more. I am disappointed in my exercising efforts, but now I'm planning a trip to Yosemite so I'm using that to motivate me to strengthen my muscles and build stamina so that I can go and enjoy the new me! I am so thankful I made the leap and got this done. I will never regret or be ashamed of having surgery. -
my surgeon has me on liquids for 4 weeks (post op diet)..he said its very important NOT to eat solids as this is the healing process & not to over work the stomach muscles as they need to heal properly
-
I asked my Dr. to write a RX for Aqua P.T. for core strengthening. I'm completing my 7th week and my back pain relief is remarkable. My Dr. thought that I just forgot how to use my stomach muscles and had to rebuild my core muscles so they could support my back more. Whatever the reasoning, my back pain has gone from a #8 to a #3. I'll take that any day of the week. I actually joined the pool so I can continue exercising in the Water until I feel that my back/core is strong enough to exercise in the gym itself. It's worth a try. Hopefully, it will work for you, too.

I'm so tired
KCItalianGirl replied to Teresa'sTurn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Also hyrdocodine made me really tired...the pain medicine I was on week post surgery. If your still on pain meds that could be why. Just a thought. -
The area you are describing pain is your pouch. At 3 weeks I had the pain after just a couple of bites. Slow down even more, chew chew chew, and be sure the food is MOIST! It will help especially w complex proteins like tuna, beef, chicken. The pain gets better and subsides. Now it is more like a full feeling w out pain.
-
Where is the pain? Stomach? I know (in three weeks as well) I get pain in my side and/or stomach if I eat too much to fast. You get kinda cocky. It reminds me to slow down.

VSG 3 days ago. Holidays + my birthday...
TheButterfly145 replied to luvbugz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One of my close friends has gastric bypass 6 years ago and went through something similar. She was less than a week out and had to attend a birthday party with pizza. Her solution to the situation was to grab a colored party cup, take a bite of pizza and chew chew chew - then spit out the chewed food into her cup. She still does this now when she wants to eat something bad or has the 'chewies' as she calls them. She makes it look like she is drinking from the cup so the people around her aren't grossed out. I have tried it with a hamburger before and while it isn't 100% as satisfying, it definitely does curb the craving for a good long chew session. Ice chips tend to help me as well, just be sure it's pre-crushed ice or you may end up with teeth problems later.
