Agnonizing stomach/back pain. Went to ER
ForMyBoys replied to Shrinkerbell's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I spent over a month in and out of the hospital this past May through June. It started out with constipation and then cramping in my back and stomach. The cramping was not just in my lower stomach and back but all the way up into my chest. The constipation got so bad I had to take 3 enimas at a time along with laxatives just to pass something. The pain was so bad I kept going to the emergency room. They gave me several Scans with contrast(IV) but it showed nothing. I had x-rays , bloodwork, a colonoscopy, you name it and they did it. The pain was so bad at times I could not stand up . My husband felt so helpless because I would scream in pain and the doctors would just say they don't see anything. They were going to take my appendix out then they thought stones but none of that showed up. I went to a gastro specialist, my primary doctor and my lab band surgeon and no one had a clue. Finally they decided they were just going to have to open me up and look around. I was in so much pain I didn't care what they did. I also felt like they thought I may be making it up. When they did the exploratory surgery they found a huge ball of scar tissue from my lap band surgery had wrapped itself around my intestine and closed it off. It actually formed like a growth around my intestine. Also the tubing was wrapped up in it. This did not show up on any of the scans or x-rays because it just looked like skin and tubing which was suppose to be inside me just not in that way so this did not tip them off as to anything being wrong. Because I was constipated for so long my colin has stretched and will never work properly again. I will be on laxitives every day for the rest of my life and may need another surgery. -
Banded 8/21/08 and super excited!

Hello everyone, I was banded 3 days ago on the 21st. I've had what I'm assuming is the normal pains related to the gas and port area. I'm a little confused since reading this, some people have talked about Gas X strips? Should I look into those and do they help? I've been drinking Crystal Light, Fruit Punch, and unsweetened tea, along with Water of course. Is there anything else I might be able to try? I also have some questions about excess skin. Is it likely that I will have skin left over from the weight loss or does it all depend on the person? Anyone's feedback will be greatly appreciated! Thanks to everyone and good luck! -
I was just curious to see how long did it take for you to start loosing weight consistently after post op? I know some people don't lose any the first 6 weeks, during the healing time. So when did the weight start coming off consistantly, was it after you first fill? Second fill? Thanks!!

Hello to everyone. I have a surgery date in two weeks and I am on the pre-op eating plan. I am also nervous but so anxious to begin my own journey. I had alot of my questions answered but was wondering....what all did you take to the hospital? The nurse mentioned wearing "loose" clothes. Does she know how long its been since I had LOOSE clothes !! lol Thanks for the help.

I hear loose skin is less of an issue with the band too.

Unfortunately there is no magic skin poofing button. LOL I wish! I have lost 152lbs and have a lot of the same issues with chaffing. Even so without long history of having that skin problem documented most insurances will not cover removing it, because they say it's cosmetic. I say BS. I had a terrible time with my bat wings....they were very large and even though I had gotten to my optimal weight I still had residual fat and tons of leftover skin and no matter what I did, nothing helped. I did not even realize how badly it pulled on my neck. So I pain 5950.00 to have them removed 5 weeks ago. I have to do the same with my stomach and breasts because everything is hanging low pulling on my spine. I have osteoarthritis of the spine and have had 6 back surgeries so far. Hoping to hold off another one. Anyway, you think insurance would cover these things given Morbid obesity is a metabolic disease. Yikes! It will cost me another 18K to have both my Abdominalplasty and breast lift with augmentation. That is the bad news.....the good news is there are excellent surgeons out there who can do this kind of work if you can raise the funds to do it. It is the only way I know of taking that skin off your body. It simply will not go away without it.

My question is, can you feel your port when you touch your stomach? Is the port visable through the skin?

About The Port...?
Jachut replied to kaitlynmarie93's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine's easy to feel - in fact you can feel the tubing too until it disappears into the muscle. Its also easily visible. I do have a weird pocket of loose skin on my upper middle abdomen which I suspect must be from pregnancy as that's the only time I've ever had a really big stomach. If I ever get that fixed, my port will be REALLY visible - through clothing too I'd imagine. Once you lose the body fat, the port is going to show, there's no real way round that. But when I say visible, I'm happy enough to put on a bikini, people need to be lookign right at and for it to really notice it. -
7 months out down 120 pounds

No plan but to be as normal as possible I'm not really consume with my sleeve as much but I never count calories joined gym two weeks ago I have loose skin but not like some 100 of my pounds was lost at 5 months -
I'm on Medicare, but I was told the same thing about skin removal. The counselor explained that skin removal was not the same as a tummy tuck, so if I wanted to have the whole navel placement, I'd have to pay the difference. I don't know whether that was explained or not.

Sue, can you say that again like you're talking to a 6 year old? Am I hearing you correctly, that I can fly into San Antonio then take a long drive to Montery? My best friends live in San Antonio, and we owe them a visit. How long of a drive are you talking about? I doubt I'll ever go there because I'm not sure if I'll ever get a new port. If I can hold on to my "occasional" restriction, then the thought of another surgery can sit way in the back of my mind. My incision is a bitch. It's not too bad, but it bothers me every day. There's a hard cyst under the skin, and today the wound was actually hardened over for about an hour, then it started leaking again. I've showed it to enough doctors that weren't concerned, so I'm just sticking with my instincts and believing it will eventually go away. But I sure like everything I hear about Rumbauh and would like to know all my options. Thanks!

I can relate to the gas pains - but I knew that was something that could happen from when I was researching it. So I find what triggers it and try not to do it. Some foods, sometimes it's just to much air...everyone in the band journey is so different. The band isn't for everyone some use to the fullest extent and some don't..the key w/ the band is that you have to use your tool the way it's suppose to be used. Changing your eating habits. I have a friend that is 1 year out of the RNY and has already gain 20 pounds back. Yes I am still lossing she told me she didn't learn to eat right when she first had her RNY and know she paying for it. I know SEVERAL RNY patients that have gain a lot of weight back. They will all tell it was because they didn't learn the "healthy" eating habits. So yes it is taking me longer to loose my weight but study's show that over a 5 year time I will have actually lost more weight then the RNY patient and kept it off. The RNY patient will have lost, gained, lost and could have gained more. One other thing w/ the band it says you should loose about 50 - 60% of your excess weight. Well if you are over weight by 100 pounds they say you should loose 50 pounds. Now I am not taking that I am going to prove them wrong. Good luck on it..I hope your gas pains have gotten better and things are going better for you. Was there any chance you could change to the RNY now that you have lost some weight? Good Luck again and know the band isn't for everyone. One last thing my thorey is the it doesn't matter what surgery you have we are all in the same struggle together - to get healthy and live longer.

I'm sorry. I completely disagree. It does work the way it was told for some of us. I had no surprises. I eat the "healthy" food and I am losing weight. I'm sorry you're disappointed in your band, but I don't think it's fair to generalize a grievance. Additionally, if you lose weight rapidly there is a higher chance of saggy skin. If you lose slowly you can exercise and tone things while keeping up with the speed of your weightloss. Rapid weight loss doesn't allow the skin time to slowly resume to normal. Yes-age, heredity, etc. affect skin. But giving your body time to keep it together is also worth a lot.

Appt with Surgeon today/ Gratitude Mountain
cryss posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It has happened all so very fast... it was only a couple of weeks ago that my wife and I attended the informational seminiar. We discovered that we were screwed by an exclusion on our insurance that will not cover any claim that has, quite literally, ANY discussion with any health care professional ANYTHING weight related, (I had to pay out of pocket for an appt for a cracked foot becuase I casually mentioned to the doc I was using SlimFast to try to loose weight so that my feet would hurt less). That wasnt about to stop us. We cleaned out our 401K and took a line of credit, and I am having my first appt with the surgeon today. Tomorrow, we have the first appt with the dietician. I woke up today with a high anxiety. It was, however, quickly over powered with a strong sence of gratitude.. ... gratitude... The mountain that proverbially stands before me is the "new me". It's cool wind that cools and refreshes me that comes down into the valley I stand is fragrent and sweet... it is the breath and words I speak in the future as to the "well done" for walking with the courage necessary to navigate a road with a measure of hope, a measure of gratitude, and a measure of child like innocence. How scary was the anticipation of your first visit, and how do you feel afterward? -
Hello... My name is Liz and I am 3 months into the approval process. I am currently scheduling all of my appointments with the nutritionist and psych dr to get approved by my insurance company. I am attending a seminar next week. I told my mom the other day... she was supportive yet oblivious. She doesnt understand why I would want to get banded. I weighed 320 lbs (size 24) at my highest. This was after a double pulmonary embolism at the age of 22 from an allergic reaction to birth controll pills. Ive lost about 60 lbs on my own, which brings me to where I am. I have always been heavy and I have always struggled with my weight, even thoiugh I am athletic. I have PCOS, which makes it even harder to manage my weight. I am now 274 lbs, size 18, and eligible for lapband by 20lbs. At 27, Im tired of being big. I want to look good! I want my body to match my efforts! Im ready for a new life and I believe that I deserve it. Im tired of watching all my friends get married and have babys... and Im just stuck. If I am approved, my insurance will cover 100%. I figure why not, at the very least I'll loose 20 or 30 lbs minimum. Right now, I am dealing with alot of fears and guilt. I feel like I should have been able to do this on my own. I feel like I have tried and tried and tried some more. Im scared that the band will not work. I am scared that I will not look good. Im scared of what people will say. I am scared that I will have loose skin or that I will look melted. Im scared that I may have another pulmonary embolism after surgery. I am open to all comments and words of encouragement. I really need it. I do have a few friends who are really standing behind me on this.... my family is just uneducated. Also... can someone please share how much weight they lost their first month? First 2 months? Does it hurt when they fill the port with saline? What does it feel like? I assume that they stick a needle of sorts into theport. How far under your skin is it and where is it placed?

How to tell children about surgery
Stephanne replied to Npdavis's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I told my kids (7, 10 &13) that I was having surgery to loose weight so that I would have more energy to play with them. I really emphasized the "more energy" and "healthier" side of things rather than just the weight loss. It seemed to work well for them. We went to church tonight for the first time since surgery 3 weeks ago. My middle son said one of his friends asked where he had been and he told him "my mom had surgery so we had to stay home so she could rest." Being a 10 yr old boy his friend asked what kind of surgery and my son told him that it was surgery so I would have more energy. I thought that was a pretty good answer for a 10 year old. -
Vitamis D level too low
James Marusek replied to Joei's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
According to the internet: If you shun the sun, suffer from milk allergies, or adhere to a strict vegan diet, you may be at risk for vitamin D deficiency. Known as the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D is produced by the body in response to skin being exposed to sunlight. It is also occurs naturally in a few foods -- including some fish, fish liver oils, and egg yolks -- and in fortified dairy and grain products. Vitamin D is essential for strong bones, because it helps the body use calcium from the diet. Traditionally, vitamin D deficiency has been associated with rickets, a disease in which the bone tissue doesn't properly mineralize, leading to soft bones and skeletal deformities. But increasingly, research is revealing the importance of vitamin D in protecting against a host of health problems. -
hope I don't chicken out
Liz The New Me replied to gabrielle1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You sound like me! I thought I had wrote it. I'm going to be 6 yrs older than you on the 14th. and that's when I knew you could be a sister from another mother. I have no regrets so far. I wish I had done it years ago to really be enjoying it to the fullest now. Now it's not easy and you follow the rules closely because you loose the most weight in the beginning. We are all different here and hit things at different times. But we all get on the loosing bench and will be wearing our sexy dress out....even if it's just to the grocery store. Welcome!!! -
60 lbs on the pre op diet??? If I could do that well at dieting, I would not need surgery...just had to say. Surgery was my last resort because I was unable to loose weight any other way. And my 6 month program proved just that to my insurance...that I indeed needed surgery, nothing else will work. Just had to say...I read these posts all the time and it makes my head spin...I just don't understand the reason for wanting - needing to be successful on that 6 month program.... I know Dr.'s are asking people to be successful, what else would they say other than give it your best effort...which mine did...and I FAILED....and the staff just smiled knowing something????

How did you determine your goal weight?
Nykee replied to Wheetsin's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
as 150 sounds ridiculous for me.... My chart puts me around 155 .... But I think 195 is the perfect goal..... Iys under 200 and I would feel GREAT at 195.. and IF I lose more that will just be a bonus.. I secretly will feel fine if I bottom out at 250#..... if it has to ya know. They say we have the chance of loosing 75% of our excess weight.. so thats my average... I started over 400 pounds... my skin alone is gonna weigh alot.. I will never look right. At 195 I will prolly look 250... oh well Is it the weight you were last comfortable at?............No...I never was 195, I prolly was 7 months pregnant at 195, .... I had no clue until my baby was born that I had went from a 145 pound teen to a 230 fat mama. -
My goal use-to-be 144, according to a bmi of 40 when I was 244 and I needed to loose 100 lbs. that would put me at 144.. In my dreams 2+ years... I'll be happy at 160. heck I'm happy now at 168! I think age has a big effect, I'm 46. those that are under 30 have a greater chance of loosing more, my opinion.

ok. I'm 10 months out and have lost 105 pounds. (only 10 pounds to goal.) I want to have cosmetic surgery at around the one year point, maybe 15 month. I'm 55, so no spring chicken, nothing is going to make me look like when I was young, would just like to look and feel firmer. My problem areas are: thighs -oh my gosh, they look like elephant legs belly -not as bad as I thought it would be breasts -were sagging lots before, now not much tissue left at all arms -looks like the skin is separating the lower fat from the upper part of the arm , from the elbow to the armpit, I guess they call it bat wings (part of this is obviously age) I would like to hear from all of you who've had the cosmetic surgery on the thighs and arms, especially the older generation. Was it worth the pain? Is the outcome satisfying? to what degree. Are the scars on the thighs and upper arms so bad that the way they were is better? Thanks,, thanks so much for all your input. I think my age is my biggest concern. If I were 30, 40, even 45, I wouldn't even think twice, I'd just do it! ps. any dallas metro area?
-
thanks, thanks, thanks for the responses so far! I can see there are problems with every "solution". What to do? Before summertime, I was not fretting as much as I am now. I am single, sounds like a crazy term for one my age, and want to take a vacation. I've been waiting for this weight loss for 15 years! But, now that the weight is off, I still feel bad about taking one. If I can't swim or wear shorts, then I don't know if there is anything else I'd prefer to do. So, if any of you have any ideas for a relaxing, but exciting vacation in the US, and one that is very inexpensive, let me know! ps. I'd love to be able to just ignore the awful skin and go where ever I want and do what I want, but let's face it...if I couldn't ignore the fat, then I won't be able to ignore the skin...
