So I was sleeved 2 days ago, I was told to only drink whey protein isolate however I can’t seem to tolerate it at all. The thickness, smell , taste everything just makes me want to throw up. Most of the powdered ones do. Did anyone’s surgeon have a problem with them substituting for ready made protein shakes? I tolerate premier protein very well.

Okay...here it is...a dumb question...
cyndilou29 replied to olemelissa's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
No such thing as a dumb question. Your weight loss has been AMAZING, congratulations! Just my two cents, but I think the problem might be that you were not living "real life" before now. In real life, you have BBQ and ice cream and you miss a day of exercise. It is very difficult to keep up the pace you were doing. On a birthday, you are SUPPOSED to eat birthday cake. Not the whole cake, not a slab, but a PIECE. That IS part of the rules. You've been dieting for 2 months but you have to find a place in between dieting and living, otherwise I feel you are setting yourself up to fail. If you beat yourself up every time you have a bite of bbq chicken, you're not going to get far. Moderation is what you have to learn now. Because when motivation goes out the window, and it usually does eventually, moderation is what keeps you on track. Restriction is one of those things that when you have it, you know it, but it's hard to explain. You just get full really fast. Don't worry about slippage or erosion ,if you are following up with your surgeon he'll catch it. Listen, it's just my two cents and I'm sure many will disagree but my opinion is that you are doing the right thing to ask whether it is head or stomach hunger, you are eating your Protein and you are drinking your Water. If you are truly hungry, you should have a fill. If not, you should work on head hunger - maybe with a group or a therapist. But you have to stop obsessing because you can't maintain that attitude for long and I fear you are setting yourself up for failure. Good luck and keep me posted. Cyn -
Odd Symptoms Less Than a Week Out
JolieBug replied to KhadijahRose's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Welcome to Ketosis! This is the fat-burning phase caused by low carbohydrates in the diet. It gets better, but skin is noticeably dryer (I use Palmer's all over for firming and Clinique on my face 2x daily). You also may sunburn more easily. I do. You crave PB because your main source of energy is Protein, which comes from our diets now. Be sure to get in your recommended amount or you risk losing muscle mass, which can include the heart and other organs. My eyes are dry and I have to use moistening drops and be careful with contacts. Normal. Up your Water if you can. For breath, try altoids smalls. They don't have carbs like regular mints. Hope this helps! -
I need help with my fitness pal. How can I track my protein and carbs ect and not just my calories? How can I change my protein goals?

Surgery date is two weeks from yesterday! I start my pre-op protein/liquid diet on Saturday. I'm drinking my second to last couple coffee, I have exactly 2 diet Pepsi's for each day until Saturday. I feel like I'm trying to get in last meals Before I plunge into the Vertical sleeve world!! I had my upper GI, EKG, and bloodworm done yesterday! I'm really grateful for this group! It's very encouraging! And it's nice to know that most of you will or have been trough this!!

So my thought of the day is how important working out is and how we all NEED to be doing it. I am the worst with working out because I just hate it but it is something we have to do in order to get the full benefit of this surgery and to be the healthiest we can be. I had a reality check from a friend whom I reached out too when I felt like I was going down the wrong path already at 4 months, I know horrible but hey bad habits die hard. And you know what she said that really made me think was "Please don't spit in the face of this surgery," and wow that really hit me cause that was what I was doing. I was slowly inching my way back to the old way I use to be and I just can't do that. That's what got me where I was in the first place, fat and miserable. Sooooo I took her advice and put it into action. She said promise yourself to exercise at least 3 times a week for 30 min. That's really not a lot to ask if you think about it. 3 times a week is totally do-able so I made that promise to myself that night. This is only my second week since my promise but I have kept my promise and even worked out 2 days in a row this week so far because I am feeling so good. It's funny how when you respect yourself and keep promises you make how great you feel inside. And on another positive note I lost 5 pounds last week from exercising and eating better. Hey what more can you ask for. I still have like 90 pounds to lose so this is not the time to be lax and lazy so for anyone who is having trouble just remember what my friend said. Don't spit in the face of this surgery. Use it and take full advantage of being lucky enough to of gotten this surgery. It's only a TOOL. You still have to do ALL the work. Good luck to everyone and get your butt moving. Remember it doesn't matter how slow you go, you are still lapping the people that are sitting on the couch. I love that one! I totally got off track with my rant but I was also trying to say that we all need to make working out a priority. Just like taking our vitamines, drinking our Water and eating our Protein. It's a priority and we HAVE to do it in order to stay healthy and strong. The same goes for working out. When people want to make plans or go out you have to say NO not till I am done working out cause you know if you miss it you probably are not going to end up doing it later. Plus when you get off your routine it just messes up the whole day anyways. Sooooo remember working out is a PRIORITY and you need to make TIME for it. Ok I am done running my mouth. Love you all

Medicaid is definitely different from state to state. I work at a hospital in Virginia and we can only see patients from Virginia and West Virginia. West Virginia is covered in Virginia because they have such limited options for medical care in parts of their state - many of them drive 6+ hours to see us. Otherwise, no other state's Medicaid program is accepted in our state. Additionally, there have been recent changes to Medicaid programs and many states are now contracting Medicaid benefits with regular HMO companies. (Medicare is different - that's generally what we all get when we're 65 and over. That works anywhere in the country.) I do know that Medicaid even pays for Viagra, so I would be really disgusted if they didn't cover something like banding. I would do what someone advised above - call the number on your card and ask a) if bariatric surgery is covered and  which providers in your state participate. Good luck :cool2:

Anybody ever been told to ease up on Protein? My aftercare says I need 60-90 grams, and I tend to get closer to 120 using Isopure shakes even just 1 week after surgery. I take in close to 100oz of fluids a day... Any thoughts?

Too much protein?
Seymour1971 replied to Seymour1971's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I asked about this at my post op appointment. Too much protein can damage your kidneys. 60 grams is what do shoot for... I have found yellow pea protein... low in fat and carbs, 20 g protein... and it does well in my hot coffee. Doesn't lump up. That is breakfast and snack.. then I eat regular small meals for lunch and dinner... feel satisfied. -
I'm going through the stages of having revision surgery - my nutritionist has been emphasizing that after I get sleeved - I have to do "high protein" - low-carb. They have me following the plan now as a "pre-op" diet although I'm still waiting for approval

1 year post op - how much are you eating?
kimbernada replied to bkz3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm eating about a cup of food at a sitting - with about 1000-1200 calories total for the day. EXCEPT for this past week - we had to say goodbye to our 14 yr old schnauzer last Friday. I've done a little stress/emotional eating, but not totally out of control AND it's easing up now - as I know we made the right decision, etc. Anyhow, I still have a protein shake every morning to bump up the protein total. It's about 40 grams of protein. That gives me a little leeway the rest of the day for hitting my 80 gram minimum for protein. I think the biggest thing is to get back to journaling your food intake daily. I know it isn't exactly fun, but it will get you back on track or at least really pinpoint what you can work on, etc. -
Works great! Not only with protein shakes, but by itself. Try Blue Diamond Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk and sweeten it with Splenda to taste. Absolutely delicious, 40 calories per 8oz serving, and 50% more calcium than regular milk. I drink at least one glass per day, sometimes two. Love it!!
-
An you use the almond milk that's made by the makers of almond milk for protein shakes?
-
I would check with your bariatric team. Higher protein may be fine since you are newly banded. I know that excessive protein can cause kidney stones etc....but the protein grams would be super high and I doubt you could exceed once you are on solid food. You are drinking lots of water which is very important.

Just got home... Pain isn't too bad...
FINFAN3DP replied to FINFAN3DP's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I think the gas pains are all gone now. Really, i think it might not have been gas that was causing pain, but rather my diaphram from being blown up. I feel pretty good right now, had an oxy about an hour ago, and have started drinking my Protein 2.0 water. I can tolerate little sips, but nothing more. May wait till tomorrow to try yogurt or pudding. All in all, the Hernia pain seems more than the sleeve pain. Standing up or sitting down takes a lot as it is very painful. But, i'm doing it. Taking small walks downstairs or just down the hallway. Excited to see the weight shedding. I gained 10lbs in the hospital, and have already lost 3lbs from peein. The stomach needles for the blood thinner isn't as bad as I thought they would be. Thanks to everyone for their support on this site. -
So much different medical advice on what we can eat post op.
Megan1982 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was given my diet post op and it is pretty restrictive. I am three weeks out and I am allowed up to 3 meals a day, at a max of 4 oz of Protein per meal. I can also have a half cup of non starchy veggies. Also, all the sugar free, non carbonated beverages I can handle. I can't have fruit until week 8 and yogurt and milk for 6 months. Carbs are not allowed until 75% of excess weight is gone. Here is my problem, I cannot eat to save my life. I have no appetite and can only handle soft, or liquids. I could just not eat. I tell myself that is bad and I force myself to eat an ounce or two here and there. I see others mentioning applesauce, milk, yogurt, etc. and I WISH I had that option. I feel like at least then I could get something in that is kinda a solid. I think I drink 64 oz but protein intake is way under 60 grams. Any advice? Also, pills are equally as hard to take. Any tips? I feel WAY overwhelmed.
