Can't drink Protein, HELP!
rosstheboss replied to Tessa1988's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Not sure if you have Kroger by you but they have this CARBMASTER MILK! Chocolate, Plain and Vanilla, 8 onz has 11 grams of Protein and 60 Calories. I know you need more but you could maybe mix protein powder with it. A Christmas I used it with Egg Beaters to make Eggnog. I told a friend of mine who's daughter has medical issues she was talking how her girl needed more protein but wouldn't drink ensure etc. I told her and she loves it. Tastes like regular chocolate milk. I mentioned it to my Dr he said it was find but as space is at a premium perhaps mix some additional unflavored protein powder with it. I currently have a band and am having a sleeve revision in May. -
I’m having a revision from sleeve to bypass on July 5th. I had a hard time with protein shakes when I had the sleeve, they tasted so chalky. Can anyone recommend protein shakes from Bariatric Pal that are good and not chalky tasting?

Approved For Band To Sleeve - But My Family Isn't Supportive
Threetimesacharm replied to wdrake_98's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had a revision on September 10th with no complications at all. Any surgery has risks attached to it. Maybe review with him what he is afraid of, what complications maybe he is just a fraid to lose you. It has been the best decision I could have made and have no regrets. Good Luck. -
Kate's "The Works" special
general_antiope replied to general_antiope's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Shalee, lol, I failed on liquids so far. Heh. I'm eating well, but after a fill on Sunday I'm loose again  oh well, it's the LAST TIME this will happen after a fill. The suggestion was great for that Protein bullet. Never heard of it! I use Shakeology + a Peanut Butter bolster. I like it because it also has Probiotics, anti-oxidants, Vitamins, minerals, and Fiber, and will be a great post-op regimen to help with the slow-down of digestion. Man those percocets really mess me up, so I might get some additional stool softeners. Thanks too for the reassurance about the "not being at goal" thing. I'm taking this as the blessing it is. Kydime - I asked the doctors I interviewed: - Did they have experience with lap band patients - How many similar surgeries have they done (Mine has done over 600) - How many required revisions has he had within 6 months - What is their revision clause - Did they have anyone else in the OR performing the operations (am I a teaching patient) 80% of the docs could not answer the first question right...so I kept going. I ended up choosing the surgeon my lap band doctor (Dr. Ren) suggested. It was important to me to find someone who knew lap band/massive weight loss. I'm so, so glad I held out. Well it's ten days away. I sent all money away. Every last penny. I'm not really nervous, just impatient for it to be over. I do get a little nervous thinking about waking up after surgery...I absolutely hate that feeling of disorientation and realizing it's over and I missed it all. LOL. It was the reason I never took naps as a five year old, much to my mother and pre-school teachers' dismay hehe. I also don't like the feeling of gas and drugs in my body as soon as I wake up from surgery. Just ready to get on with healing. -

Why Did You Choose The Sleeve Over The Band?
Lissa replied to Aussie_Nessa's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I chose the sleeve over the band for all of the reasons listed above, and then some. My late mother-in-law had stomach cancer and had a stomach gastrectomy for that. She was left with even less capacity than I have, yet she still managed to eat and to take medications with it. I also have a sister in law who has had THREE Gastric Bypass surgeries, and we had a very frank, involved discussion of her complications and revisions. Not for me. Lastly, a former co-worker had the early stomach stapling surgery. Watching her eating habits and problems convinced me I'd rather be fat than have those issues. When I finally went for the seminar, I was initially going for the LB, but the doctor said one thing that convinced me completely. He said that those with the sleeve can only eat so much, period. Even for someone whose main problem was sweet addiction (like me), the sleeve is a better choice because it restricts how much of any food one can eat. I was sold, right then and there. 5 months and 81 pounds later, I'm very happy with my sleeve! Good luck with your decision. -
Sleeve 2011 and just had the Roux en y bypass questions
Frostyauggie replied to wendy100's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
How was you’re recovery process going from the sleeve to bypass? In a few weeks I will be doing a revision of my sleeve to bypass due to a hiatal hernia and acid reflux. I’m curious to know if the recovery after the surgery is worse, the same or easier the second time around. I’m also interested in knowing how your insurance covered the revision. My policy has an exclusion and I’m concerned I will be denied coverage. -

Omg my port is detached!!
Lizalee replied to Stay_Tuned's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dear stay tuned: That is frustrating, no doubt about it. Sounds like your port flipped...and it unfortunately DOES happen. My tubing kinked, and my second fill resulted in WAY too much Fluid in since they couldn't tell if it was going in or not. Once I drank Water, it was obvious it HAD gone in I had extreme pain, vomiting. This was on June 6th - also the night of my 3rd child's high school graduation -- in our home town 60 miles away. So, I ended up missing graduation and having an emergency port revision instead. It's just a memory now, and I was upset at the time, but what are you going to do? It sets us back, it's not convenient. I've managed to do very well by sticking to the band rules while awaiting for my delayed 2nd fill - which I finally had today - because it was delayed while I re-healed. Hope you can get this fixed real soon and get back in the swing of things. In a few months from now, I won't seem so bad once you're back on track. Hang in there!!!! -
Had port revision surgery, pain at port site
Bruce120 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had an issue, which I've written about here, that the tubing of my port was sticking out of my stomach in an extreme fashion, so I had to have an additional procedure done to fix that. After the second procedure, which was 16 days ago, I started having very strong pain at the port site, which I didn't have after my initial lap band surgery. It's not a steady constant pain, but it hurts badly when I touch it or something bumps into it, lay in bed on my stomach or my right side, and when I make certain movements like bending etc. The pain is very strong and stinging, and it's unlike anything I've experienced after my first surgery. I can only sleep on my left side, otherwise the pain is unbearable. It hasn't gotten any better in the last two weeks, it's been the same level pain since the procedure. I saw my surgeon today, and he said that the pain isn't something out of the ordinary, and since he has had to reposition the port and had to resurture the port to the abdominal wall, and he claims he made it tighter this time so the tubing wouldn't come out of place again, he claims that as far as the port site is concerned, it's as if I've had lap band surgery all over again and the pain is normal. But I'm very skeptical of him, and I have had too many issues already since surgery. So my question is, if it's normal to experience sharp pains at the port site for a prolonged period of time after surgery? And is it normal to go a few weeks without any reduction in said pain? -
New SIPS Sleeve Procedure
tedmondNC replied to Mojo56's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Dr. Bovard from Bariatric Specialties of NC did my SIPS procedure on 12/22/14 and I was down 97 pounds as of September 21, 2015. I originally had a lap band procedure done in April 2008 and lost about 115lbs but gained about 35 back. Last year in October I decided to do a revision and I love it a lot more than the Lap Band. -
Where did/are having your surgery
CyclicalLoser replied to Carol Gray's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Lapband -> Riverside Medical Clinic (Dr. Zainabadi) Terrible, terrible Doctor (No longer performing surgeries, no longer with medical group). Also the medical group cancelled the program. RNY Revision -> Loma Linda University Medical Center (Dr. Scharf) Amazing Doctor, has unbelievable credentials. Their program is absolutely fantastic. Based on my experience, I would suggest to go with a teaching university, they stay on top of the latest technologies, usually have state of the art equipment, and are borderline OCD on your stats, your health, and your education. In my instance, only "real" surgeons perform the surgery, but student surgeons observe. Benefit? Two sets of eyes for everything (My morning rounds were a real doctor followed by 15 medical students). I gave the one student doctor a hard time (tongue in cheek). I could tell he was nervous. He asked me if I could tell him my name. I replied "Yes". He smiled, the 15 students chuckled, and I broke the ice for him. He thanked me later. -
Just looked at my Revision Bill! WOW- Paid by Ins $27K
Ms. Brightside replied to rosstheboss's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I received the estimate from my hospital last week (surgery is next week). $32-36K for the hospital only. This does not include the fees for the surgeon, surgeon's assistant, or anesthesiologist. This is for the sleeve and is not a revision. -
HELP: Gaining Weight After Only 6 months from MGB
summerset replied to MGBinIsrael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Completely understandable. Even 1200 kcal is not really much for a male your height. Did you weigh and track the food you eat by any chance to see how much calories you're really eating in a day? I know it's a real hassle but maybe try to track your intake for a week as accurate as possible? As for the amount of food. TBH, I can't really remember how much I was able to eat 6 months after MGB. I'm about three years out now of my revision and eating two bananas in one sitting is no problem at all. However, I don't feel hungry for a whole while after eating them. -
How restricted is your sleeve?
PaulStephens1975 replied to GetBack_095's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thats good to hear. Because the way i feel, i want as much restraint as possible. How far out are you? Sent From Galaxy Note 5 using the BariatricPal App I'm only a month and 10 days out. I revised from the band to the sleeve on June 7th. -
Update : Had surgery on 9/24/09 lost 25 lbs went for my first fill to find out port is tilted had a revision done on 1/14/10. On date of surgery was 230 lbs now weighing 222 lbs. Feeling ok but kind of scared again I do not want to go through another revision. Does anyone have any suggestions of light exercises that I can do or should I wait until after my visit on 1/22/10?

I also went to the doctor anticipating the sleeve, but he suggested the bypass. He was really good about explaining the whys. He asked what my concerns were about the bypass, and I mentioned that I thought it was more invasive. He said that it's a more technically complicated surgery than the sleeve for the doctor, but on the patient side of it, the pre/post op are pretty much the same. When it wasn't done laparoscopically, I'm sure it was much more invasive, but now it's pretty much the same as the sleeve. I've decided to take his advice and go with the sleeve. Also, my insurance made it very clear this one a one time surgery, and I've seen so many people with revisions that I'm just going straight to bypass.

VSG to ESG Surgery??-Why??
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to teedsg's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Everything I've seen on here about getting a revision from sleeve because of GERD has been to the bypass. I've heard the bypass actually greatly diminishes or even eliminates GERD. And gives additional weight loss (although less than initial surgery, it still gives some). It might take another year, but you should be able to get that last 65 pounds down with the bypass, and have relief from the GERD. I would talk to your doctor again, and if he still won't budge from the ESG, find another doctor. -
How do you feel about eating out after weight loss surgery?
Domika03 replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm about 4 months post-sleeve (revision from band). For me, it depends on the restaurant. I definitely check the menu online first to see if there is some sort of lean Protein that I can order. I try to pick 2 things so I'm prepared in case I need a back up plan, LOL . I stay away from breads, rices & pastas as main dishes, and focus on good Proteins. My eating habits are quite different even now with the sleeve than what it was like with the band. But, I will allow myself a bite / nibble of something (yummy dessert) here & there as a treat. -
Did any of you keep your surgery a secret? I have! Please give input!
biginjapan replied to Freedom&Bliss's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had my surgery almost exactly 3 years ago and didn't tell anyone other than 2 friends who live halfway around the world and are not connected to any of my other friends, family, or co-workers. I wasn't going to tell anyone, but then I thought someone should know in case something happens to me. When people asked about my weight loss I focused on the the low carb/portion control aspect of what I was doing (which, let's face it, is what leads to long-term success). I'm going for my revision surgery in a month's time and this time no one will know. The only people I would be willing to tell are some friends who are also morbidly obese - but only if they asked me specifically about it. In a few years time, when I am hopefully in maintenance mode, I think I would be more willing to talk about it openly, but while I'm still struggling, it's not something I can really talk about. I live in a country that has one of the lowest overweight/obesity rates in the world, so it's not like there are a lot of people out there who have a shared life experience that I can talk to about it. -
February 2021 Sleeve Surgery
wldtauruz replied to LifelongJourney's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Anyone out from the Feb 25th surgery? If so how are you feeling??? I had my revision on the 25th and dammit the pains -
I had my revision surgery at Star Medica with Dr. Rodriguez in april. I was quite a bit aprehensive about going to Juarez. From where I live now, Juarez is only about a 4 hour drive away. TJ would have been 14 hours or more in the car or a plane trip. I didn't think I would be up for that on the return trip. I believe that Dr Rod does surgery in TJ only once a month so there was more availability in Juarez. I felt very safe with our driver (Sergio) and in the hospital. Sergio picked us up at the El Paso airport. My friend and I stayed in the hospital the entire time. I arrived on Thursday and was scheduled to stay until Sunday. We ended up leaving a day early which was Saturday evening. We were both ready to be home. Star Medica Hospital was great. Clean and Modern. Aside from the spoken language, it was almost like any hospital I have been in here in the US. Gilly

I believe this is sound science but it's just the amount of butter and heavy cream I could out away pre-band.....thank goodness those days are over. So enjoying being a dairy eater now, and this includes indulging in a little wedge of yummy cheese here and there, real butter if I fry an egg, etc. But back then it was so much more.....even a salad I would eat is amazing to think about now, that volume, Actually, new research plus old research that was buried for many years says your mom is right. It's the carbs, not the fat. Take a look at Gary Taub's books Good Carbs Bad Carbs or Why We Get Fat. Journalistic discovery of all the research and studies over the years that did not agree with the low fat bandwagon. Nations around the world (like Sweden) are revising their nutritional guidelines as we speak. I was low fat for decades, did nothing to keep me from gaining weight. Now I eat all the heavy cream and butter I want but keep my carbs very low and I maintain my weight very easily. Not to sound preachy, but the world is a-changing and everything we took for granted about nutrition since the 60's is being turned on its head.
