gastric bypass or gastric sleeve?!
LeticiaHuggins replied to katrinaxox1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I say RNY because its been out longer, more researches have been done on it and to be honest when revisions are done they always seem to revise that person to RNY. Might ad well start out the right way. -
Puget Sound Surgical? Or other aftercare choices near Seattle?
brittu posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hi folks, I have a lap band that was placed in August 2008. It's been great but I recently started to gain weight and found out two weeks ago that I had inflamation and possibly a minor slip. My doctor is about two hours away and is no longer covered by my insurance. So I ended up seeing Dr. Billings at Puget Sound Surgical today. He says I could replace my band with a larger band (which seems to have less issues with slippage) or revise to a sleeve but that my surgery looks well done and I could probably do just fine with the band I have. He suggested starting with their year long aftercare program. I'm going to have an endoscopy on Friday just to make sure everything looks good inside. Here's the problem. A revision would be covered by my insurance. But Puget Sound Surgical doesn't bill insurance for after care. It would cost $3,500 for a year of nutrition and behavior support. montly doctor follow-ups and fills. That's a lot of money but my husband is open to it if that kind of care would help me get back on track and losing to my goal. Has anyone gone to Puget Sound Surgicals after care program? If so, could you share your experience and whether it made a big difference to your success? I could continue with my current doc at $250 a visit an a 5 hour return trip travel. Or I could just visit the nutritionist separately. Or I could just cough up the $300 per month for aftercare and really commit to it. I'm not sure what to do. I can't find any other docs around here that would take on a lap band patient banded by someone else locally. But if you're in the Seattle area and have a doc who takes on pre-banded patients I'd love to hear from you too. Thanks! Britt -
Is lap band a stepping stone to RNY?
ElleG replied to cfranklin526's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My lapband failed and I had a revision to the RNY. It's not a step in the process. Talk with your doc and have a open honest conversation so you and he/she can make the best choice for you! Best Wishes -
changing bariatric dr after surgery?
Domika03 replied to itsmekarenlee's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I started with 1 Dr for my lap band surgery & had different insurance during difficult times which resulted in revision surgery through a different insurance. And now, I'm actually back to another insurance again. I haven't found that replacement surgeon, but am looking. Mind you, this is all within a 2 year time frame You didn't mention why you're changing, but I'm guessing it could be as a result of insurance. Contact your current insurance company & ask them if they cover bariatric, and what Dr's are in your area, -
Can you keep protein shakes down? What does your doctor say? Have you contacted them? Its a fabulous weight loss. You say you are pre op. Are you having a revision due to this problem?

Getting the band out...what's the procedure?
KristeyK replied to NYC_gal's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It really depends on your insurance. You can call and they'll be able to tell you what you need to do, as would a surgeon's office. I have United Healthcare for the Railroad, and I wouldn't have had to do ANYTHING other than call and make an appt for the surgeon, and they would have done a few typical preop screens to get it removed. (I'm getting a revision to a sleeve though, so I have to do everything all over again.) GOOD LUCK! -
I've been to (2) consults w/ different doctors. They both have given me the same statistics, even though one does primarily gastric bypass. RNY has a greater chance of complications and death, at the beginning. The lapband is the primary weight loss surgery, in Europe and elsewhere. RNY deal with restriction AND malabsorption (your body absorbs less calories). The Lapband just deal with restriction. Keep reading these message boards and gathering your information. You'll figure it out. Doctors who make you feel like a moron, should not be your doctor in the first place. Best of luck, Shawn

Your doctor may be tactless but isn't he correct in a sense? I thought people with extreme BMIs responded better to gastric bypass than to Lap band. At 450 lb (dependent on your height, of course) it seems as though you be a better candidate for bypass. Maybe if you could lose more weight (get down to 375 perhaps?) lap band would be a safer choice. If I'm wrong, please educate me. Regardless, your doctor should not have upset you enough to make you cry. As with anything else that pertains to your health...get a SECOND opinion.

Hi Chris.......I did alot of research and I chose the Lap Band and here is why.....It can be removed if you have problems.....and you do lose weight slower with the lap band which is good in my case as I have alot to lose. Your skin has alot of elasticity so while you are losing the weight slowly you can work out and wont have alot of the sagging that you can get with fast weight loss. Don't let a doctor tell what to choose...when it comes to your body you choose what you feel is best for you. I have a relative that did the gastric bypass surgery and she now has a huge hernia and is big again. Nothing is 100% unless you want it to be. I had a choice and I chose Lap Band...

What is that procedure? Were you originally going in for a band to sleeve revision?

Hi...I am new. I attended info session Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Ma a week ago and thought I was heading toward lap band surgery option. Worried about all the complications I have been reading about. I am 70 years old and wonder if I am not setting myself up for possible further surgery at a time in my life down the road where I might not be such a good surgical risk. Today I met with an old friend who had her RNY gastric bypass surgery 5 years ago. I had actually tried to talk her out of it at the time. I was active in OA, struggling along...and she had been told by the team she needed to lose weight prior to surgery. I said "if you can lose 20-30 lb. prior to surgery, why do you need surgery? Why wouldn't you just keep going?" Needless to say I have put just under 100 of the 140 lb. I lost back on this body...and I know I need help to get my vitality and my body back before I am having to have knee and back surgery!!! My friend is thrilled with her choice of this surgery. She has lost more than 100 lb. and kept it off. She looks FABULOUS and says food and weight are no longer an issue. She loves how she feels and strongly recommended I reconsider thinking of the lap band and get the bypass. After talking with her I am thinking this is a better option. I will be meeting with my surgeon next Thursday, the 27th...and will have my mind open to whatever he tells me I should do. My hunch, right now is that the by pass surgery will be what he recommends . Looking forward to any comments and to reading more in this forum. Thanks. Christine (my user nickname is mojaleski)

Question about surgery in Mexico
AZDee replied to TonyaNKy's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I just had a lower body lift in TJ with a wonderful surgeon, who is a board certified PS plus a micro-surgeon so his incisions are flawless...Please take your time and really research this, I spent a whole year looking for the right surgeon. I went to CosMed last year and had a terrible outcome, my arms need a revision as well as my breast. The implants need to be removed and the pocket rebuilt and then they have to heal for 6 months before another implant can be put in. I wish I had found my surgeon back then. My new surgeon is Dr Victor Gutierrez and he specializes in WLS patients also. He has a 5 star rating from realself. That's how I found him and I am so glad I did. -

Beth; I'm having surgery TUES at GWU. I haven't found a support group yet...seems that everyone that was in my pre-op classes at GW was having gastric bypass. Did you not like Dr. Pinnar's group? I have a friend that used him and went to his sessions a few times. I'll need to ask her why she stopped going. I think it was just too far/inconvenient with her work schedule.

Reputable Plastic Surgeons in Mexico
AZDee replied to healthbound1's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I used two different Plastic Surgeons in TJ, one I wasn't that thrilled with. His name was Dr Q and he did a really sloppy job on my breast and my arms....BUT then I started to see incrediable pictures of beautiful work, from another TJ plastic surgeon, (And really isn't that what it's all about?) The most affordable outstanding work possible My new surgeon who did a lower body lift, gave me those results, Dr Victor Gutierrez also in TJ. For me it was a no brainer, he does all internal stiching, so you don't have to spend any longer than one week and it's just 5 mins across the border, they pick you up at the airport and return you there when it's time to go home....I have pictures posted on my page here at just two weeks out from surgery. I am planning on going back down to have some revisions done from the first surgery I had with that other surgeon...Dr Gutierrez will be correcting those... -
Lapband vs lapband with plication?
☠carolinagirl☠ replied to 3mommy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
no one WLS is better then the next..all WLS require work and a mental change and a def change in eating habits and begin to exercise to make the most of whatever surgery one gets. the plication as my dr told me is my stomach folded into itself and stitched to make a small banana like (sleeve) if you will..it will (and has) helped me eat less and since this is a new procedure and still in early trials, i had to sign waivers on it...my dr did it pro bono for me....i was super morbid obese and the dr wanted me to have the bypass and i said no.....so he offered me this with the band but STRESSED that if didnt follow the lap band rules (eating my allotted amounts, stop eating junk food and begin to (move), no WLS would help me...... most WLS can and will help one lose at the beginning (the pre and post op diets helps with fast mainly all Water weight loss) and its amazing and its a confidence booster......and then when people REALIZE that they cant eat what they use too and just push it and overeat anyhow or not follow the rules, then the surgery isnt working..and 10 or more posts a day on this forum saying what am i doing wrong etc.. get whatever one you want but understand that its not a miracle....it will help you if you help it...i am living proof of that......but i also know/understand if i dont do my part the bypass, the sleeve or the DS or the band or plication wont work..people rush into WLS in my opinion thinking i had surgery and now i will automatically lose 100 pounds in a week..doenst work that way....a total mindset and attitude change is a must for success..esp when one was as large as me when i started..i either did it the right way, or got bigger...i had no other options. -
He said the band did not work for her.
Marimaru replied to ladysplenda's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
What exactly didn't work? And what is going on that he thinks it wont work again? If she's eating around her band (which we all do at some point or another, I'm sure), I don't think the bypass is a good answer anyway, because you can out eat that too, and it's not adjustable. Was she too tight and having that soft food syndrome thing? If so, the unfill should help alot, because the solid protein will keep her full longer. I'm a slow loser, I know that it's 2 things, number 1 I've always been a slow loser on any diet, and number 2, I struggle to be 'good'. When I'm not good I don't gain weight, which is all thanks to my band, and when I am good, I lose slowly, which is frustrating, but it's the right direction and that's how my band works for me. I think she just needs to figure out how her band works for her. -
I just got back clearance on my nicotine test. They've submitted my claim for surgery to GA medicaid. Any idea on how long before they call with a surgery date? I am have gastric bypass surgery at Emory Midtown by Jamil Stetler of Emory Bariatrics. TIA Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App

I have a band and would like a sleeve revision. Problem is I can't find a revision surgeon willing to see me since they didn't place my band initially. That doesn't make sense to me:( I have excellent health insurance though. Do any if you know a good Houston area revision surgeon?? Thanks!

I'm so excited! October 28th can't come soon enough. Can't wait to get the band out, have bypass, lose weight, and get healthy! I'm so glad for this support group. Best wishes to u all.

I have been preparing for my surgery for months, and my little sister has been very supportive. She is also very heavy, and has been taking Phentermine for a few months. She had a check in with her primary doctoday and told the doc the meds aren't doing anything for her. She asked for information about bariatric surgery and was told by her doctor that it is a cosmetic procedure that most insurance won't pay for!!!! I'm utterly shocked! When my sis said she isn't interested in a bypass but a sleeve, the doc then told her it's not called a sleeve, it's called a lap-band. I told my sis I would be looking for a new doctor. That shocked me!!

Yeah, if you google it's called "stomach saving gastric plication". They don't use staples, and it's supposed to be about as effective as a gastric sleeve plus reversible and without required adjustment follow-up like the band. They fold your stomach up over itself and stitch it so it remains contorted in place. You don't bypass anything, you can still absorb all nutrients... It doesn't sound bad, really, except it does sound more "dramatic" to me, and the fact that there aren't a lot of long-term results out there is also a little unsettling. I'm probably still going to go for the band. But the center seems to be such a fan of gp, I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on a much better option for no good reason.

I had my surgery in Aug 2005 and to date I have lost only 71 lbs. I'm so disappointed.:think I honestly haven't been consistent in seeing my surgeon on a regular basis because I live far from her office but I just fiund out that one of her associates sees patients in an office closer to where I live so I do have an appt in two weeks. I have two relatives who had WLS and have lost so much more weight than me. One had Gastric Bypass before I had LapBand and the other had LapBand after I did. They both look great and here I am with still about 130 lbs. still to lose. I know that I don't always eat the right foods but sometimes I can get so little down (my fill is 3.4) that rather than try to eat and end up throwing it up I eat ice cream or cookies or some other food that isn't good for me. I knew that I would have to work at this but I honestly didn't think I would have to work so hard. I really did think that just be eating less the weight would come off. Is anyone else experiencing this problem or can anyone give me some encouragement. I would really appreciate your comments. Thanks.:help:
