Why aren't more people getting the Loop DS?
NovaLuna replied to MomBee's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
1. It's a newer procedure, so some insurances don't approve it. 2. Not every surgeon does the Loop DS. 3. The surgeons who DO the Loop DS tend to have a guideline where you have to have a BMI of 50+ or two or more co-morbidities because there is a higher statistical weight loss at 70-100% verses the statistics for gastric bypass which is 60-80% (but this is just the statistical average. People can lose more or less then the average depending on if they work with the surgery or not). I chose the Loop DS for my surgery because I have hypothyroidism and I'm disabled so I had to rely on statistical average for my weight loss and the DS and Loop DS have the highest statistical average for loss. I chose the Loop DS over the traditional DS because of the diarrhea issues associated with the traditional DS since the Loop DS fixes that issue. Mostly. Also the vitamin requirements for both the DS and Loop DS are much higher. You have to take more vitamins and thus it's more expensive and you also have a higher protein requirement (80-100g protein a day for women or 100-120g for men) which, in my opinion, deters people away from the Loop DS or the traditional DS. I'm happy with my choice, personally. I was able to meet my weight loss goal and even went a little under it (I think I'm near maintenance, honestly. I lost 1 pound last month and only 1 pound the month before so... yep, very close to maintenance). My advice is to do your research, weigh the pro's and con's, and decide what YOU feel is the right surgery for YOU! You are the one who has to live with the surgery that you go with. Not your surgeon. Choose what makes YOU comfortable! Also, I warn everyone of this... they don't tell you, but any surgery with malabsorption (Gastric Bypass, DS, Loop DS) has a 3% chance of giving you either a wheat allergy or Celiac's Disease. I mean, it's UNLIKELY to happen to you as it only happens to 3 out of every 100 people, BUT my luck is terrible and I ended up with a wheat allergy. I mean, it's a blessing in disguise because it ensures that I can't eat fast food even if I wanted to, and it really forces me to think about every little thing that I put in my mouth, so I, personally, am grateful for my new allergy, but I still would have liked to be WARNED. So yeah, just so you know. It's unlikely, but there's a chance it can happen to you. Also, like most people will tell you, my only regret about my surgery.... is that I waited so long to have it done. I wish I'd done it years ago! If you have any questions about my own experiences with the Loop DS, feel free to ask! -
My doc took mine out during the bypass. Apparently he usually does this. I had a sore, hard spot for about a week but not a huge amount of pain, or at least nothing the pain meds couldn't handle.

As of today I'm six weeks post op for my Mini Gastric Bypass. Definitely hasn't been an easy ride (with two stalls), but hasn't been terrible either. Except for a week ago when I started getting increasingly frequent discomfort in the stomach region. It would feel similar to the pain of gallstone attack, and would wake me up at night, and give me the odd bout of nausea. I've not been able to eat - just my protein shake/water and supplements, and those don't feel great going down either. So I visited my surgeon yesterday and he thinks it's likely the development of an ulcer/s and accompanying swelling at the intestinal join site, so I'm on Salpraz to see if that's the culprit. I was worried I was developing a stricture, so this is definitely a better alternative! I had been on Salpraz post-op for my previous GERD, and had finished the course about two weeks ago, so... it sounds the likely culprit. Mind you I had NO reflux or sign of reflux, so this was a bit of a sneaky attack that got me unawares. Eating hasn't been easy for me post-op anyway, but it's currently ridiculous. Looking forward to this improving so I can at least do more than sit on a glass of water when my partner and I go out! Worth mentioning that I still regret nothing! Even though it's been a little rough and the "honeymoon period" seems to be running late.

My surgeon recommended the Loop DS for me. He raved about it, saying it would eventually overtake the bypass. He's writing a paper on this method and I believe that he believes in the results. I'm just nervous going with a procedure that "nobody" seems to get or has even heard of. Why do you think more people aren't going this route? Why did you choose the Loop DS?

Hi guys, I’m 9 days post op and doing great. I keep down most things. I’m struggling with eggs and getting fluids in. I’m wondering if I will ever be able to eat fries again? I’m a sandwich lover too so what about bread? Is there Bariatric friendly bread? also, I’ve gone from 117kg to 101kg in a month but how do I actually lose weight after the bypass? I’m still struggling to walk long distances without feeling dizzy and exhausted

The countdown has started for me. This time tomorrow, Nov. 3, I will be at the hospital for my sleeve procedure. I feel as prepared as possible for this big step in my life and thrilled at the thought of improved health and self esteem. i have followed this forum and found much helpful info. It has been sometimes a frustrating and prolonged process to be approved for my surgery due to insurance requirements but the process works and i had lots of time to think through my decision. Now its here and I'm very happy to have the surgery behind me. Best of luck to all of us November buddies! -
On November 8th I will be 11 months out. Next month is my Anniversary date of my surgery. I’m so excited and amazed and the little small things I wasn’t able to do before my WLS that I’m able to do now. I done this for myself and my health and glad I finally made that decision. I was literally killing myself and had to get a really eye -opener. Thank You GOD for second chance

Psych Meds after Gastric Bypass
lizonaplane replied to EsojLabina's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm now 7 weeks out from sleeve, and the only difference I've noticed is that I haven't had a single migraine since my surgery so I've been reducing the amount of topamax I'm taking. All my other psych meds are the same. Sometimes I feel irritable but I think it's because I'm not seeing the type of progress I was hoping for. Also, I don't take any extended release medications and that makes a big difference, plus bypass makes it harder than sleeve. -

I’m on my 8th day of the 2week liver shrinking diet. It’s gotten surprisingly easier, I’m not as hungry as I was the first 5days. My gastric bypass surgery is scheduled for November 8th. I’m excited and nervous at the same time. 😬 -
WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?
Bariatric Boy replied to phenomenally_me's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was never a scale person......🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣, clearly because I became clinically obese and getting sicker each year before my Gastric Bypass. I do weigh myself each day but I am not obsessed by it but it is good to measure progress which keeps me focused on my target weight goal and by getting off my meds & CPAP completely & forever. See as a tool, one of many in your toolbox to get healthy vs a device of shame. -

Sleeve vs Bypass concerns
ShoppGirl replied to ht1976's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had made up my mind that I wanted bypass to because some things I read said you lose more weight with bypass. The doctor told me that he would do either one if I really wanted it but he suggested I go with sleeve because I have bipolar disorder and there can be medication absorption issues after the bypass that are more common than they are with sleeve. So I went with the sleeve and I was 35 BMI pre-surgery. I am almost 8 months out now I am 13 pounds from a normal BMI (177 pounds and still losing). Part of me still thinks this process may have been a little easier had I gone with bypass but at the same time I am glad I went with the sleeve because it is working. I am glad that I had to the sleeve because I am OK so far on just one multivitamin and calcium. My doctor explained it to me like using a power tool for something that you can get away with just using a hammer that the bypass was just overkill for me. The only thing would be your indigestion I would bring that up and I would like to think no they won’t think you’re lying if they do I would see a different doctor because you need to have trust going both ways -

November 19th I’m having my lap band removed and replaced with the MGB. Trying to get me head right about the drastic change in foods I will be allowed especially the 1st couple of months. Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays are traditionally big eating holidays and will not be enjoying the feasts as before… I suppose I will have to clean out the pantry and fridge if unacceptable foods etc. any suggestions heading into this. I’m in Atlanta area if anyone is close let me know -

Endless waiting.. Starting to get discouraged - Mini Rant
greenwitch17 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi lovely friends! It has been a while since I posted on here because It seems like everything has REALLY been not wanting me to have this surgery consult. I originally decided on surgery in June of 2021, got my referral, and was all set for my surgical eval for September 1st (long wait for appointments in CA right now). Great! I took the day off work and an hour before my appointment the receptionist calls me from the surgical office and says Dr. had to go due to an emergency - no problem! The only appointment they have now is for September 29th, okay I will take it! Two days before my new appointment I get a call from staff telling me my surgeon will be on medical leave indefinitely and to get a new referral for a new surgeon. SO, I get a new appointment with my PCP, make my new referral, call and they only have appointments in November. November 12th is now my appointment for my first surgical consult with a doctor and I am just feeling so discouraged. The fact that it has taken almost 6 months just to consult has me frustrated and upset. Also, I developed depression about two months ago (being treated, in therapy) so I put on more weight. I just feel like maybe surgery isn't meant for me, or maybe it will be a mistake. I am just looking for some encouragement and maybe some similar stories to know I am not alone in this frustrating appointment hell! Thank you guys ❤️ -

Sleeve vs Bypass concerns
catwoman7 replied to ht1976's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
statistically, people tend to lose more weight with the bypass, but then, a statistic is a statistic. With either surgery, you'll find people who lose more or less than the statistical average. You'll find plenty of sleevers who do better than average - losing 80%, 90%, or even 100% of their excess weight. It really depends on the individual. By working at it hard and following the rules, you'll likely do much better than average - and do just as well as you would have had you had the bypass. -
Hi all! I’m schedule for bypass Dec.13 and already wondering about post op exercise. I started CrossFit when I started my pre-op weight loss in June. I absolutely love it and it has helped me in so many ways already. I’m kind of feeling bummed that I know I won’t get to go for a while. I have read at least 6 weeks post op for more intense exercise other than walking. What kind of time frame or restrictions did you all experience? I know it is based on my surgeons recommendations but I’m just trying to prepare myself. I don’t want to lose all my strength progress but don’t want to hurt myself either. Thanks!
