    Post op Upset stomach

I never did the puree stage. The food looked so yucky and my taste buds were so off. I had soup and broth for those two weeks and went straight to soft foods. Just do what ever you can to get as much protein and liquid in you as possible. Try them again when you feel like it. I couldn't eat chicken or fish for a whole year. I tried them every month but vomited every time. Then just when I thought I would never be able to eat them again - they are accepted in my stomach again. Carbs are another thing that I am struggling with but I am ok with never eating them again, they were my nemesis. We are all different and our bodies all take different lengths of time to heal. As they say - one size does not fit all

    ESG Surgery 03/14/23!

@kmacintosh glad to hear you are doing better. As far as work and being able to get your protein in during work hours, could you pull your manager to the side and explain to them bc of a medical procedure you had, you need to be able to drink a diet supplement at your desk during the day.

    ESG Surgery 03/14/23!

@L. Knight I’m doing better! - Thank you for asking. The heartburn has been pretty bad but I switched my protein shakes and that seemed to help a lot! I’m getting all my meds in and have been managing to get all my protein requirements and fluid intakes in as well. It’s quite a struggle and I’m not sure how I’ll be able to manage it going back to work next week!?? Any suggestions?
  5. Thanks everyone, the liquid protein shakes take me a while to drink but are getting easier. I need to get three per day (60-80g protein). Three shakes total about 450-500 calories. If I have some thinned yogurt, SF pudding or soup broth, the calories go up to 600 or so. I reached out to my dietician but she probably won’t respond until Monday.
  6. As @catwoman7 said both surgeries are good & will work to help you lose your weight. And you’ll hear from people who swear one or the other is the best. But remember it was best for them. Do lots of reading including people’s stories & experiences here, ask your surgeon lots of questions & for their recommendation. The decision will come down to your personal health & medical needs & history & your personal choice on how you want to live your life. Both share some similar considerations in regard to dumping & malabsorption, the post surgical recovery & plans (differences are more from surgeons or your specific needs). Dumping & malabsorption are possible with both but a little less common with sleeve - luck of the draw - but both can be managed. I don’t dump but I do have some malabsorption (protein & some meds) but it’s from my lack of gall bladder not my sleeve & I don’t need to take additional vitamins. I was leaning towards a sleeve from my research and after my conversation with my surgeon, who thought it would work best for me, I decided it was for me. I had mild reflux which I managed 99% with dietary choices (still do, it’s different, need meds every day but is manageable). Decided if I needed to (for gerd, extra weight loss help, etc.) I could revise to bypass in the future. I didn’t want to depend on vitamin supplements if I could. I didn’t have any co morbidities. I lost all my weight & more with my sleeve & have maintained (+ 1 kg). All the best whichever surgery you choose.
  7. there's not really a best option. They're both good surgeries and you'll find people on here who've been very successful with both. there are some medical conditions that might make one surgery more appropriate for you than the other (for example, GERD), but if you don't have any of those conditions, it really comes down to personal preference. I chose bypass because I had reflux issues before I had surgery. There's a chance sleeve can make those worse, whereas bypass usually improves or even cures them. So I decided not to risk it and went with bypass. I've been very happy with my bypass and would make the same choice if I had to decide today. But you'll find people who are just as happy with their sleeve. I know it's a hard decision. Even with my reflux issues, I still went back and forth before deciding for sure. P.S. in response to the comment above, malabsorption issues aren't very common as long as you keep on top of your supplements (most sleevers have to take supplements as well - although the consequences aren't as severe if you slack off). Also, about 30% of bypass patients dump, but it can be controlled by limiting the amount of sugar and fat you eat at one sitting. So those issues really didn't affect my decision. For me it came down to my reflux issues - and the fact that at the time I had my surgery almost eight years ago, sleeve was still kind of new, and I was more comfortable with a surgery that had a lot of history and research behind it. The latter reason wouldn't really apply today because the sleeve has now been around long enough to prove itself, but I personally would have still gone with RNY because I didn't want to take the risk of having my GERD getting worse (it doesn't happen to everyone - and not even to the majority - but I was worried I'd turn out to be one of the unfortunate ones, and I didn't want to go there) I think the suggestion to talk to the surgeon about your lifestyle, etc, is a good one. It might help you make a decision. Good luck, though - I know it's not an easy decision.
  8. Mac & cheese is such a yummy heart warming comforting dish though I’d expect Mac & cheese will be off your menu for a while. The macaroni, as with all pastas, are a big no while you are losing. Though some are allowed a few carbs they are more complex carbs & usually whole & multi grains. Pasta is a simple carb with little nutritional benefit & it swells in your now much tinier tummy. You fill up on the pasta & have no room for the protein & other nutrients yiu really need. You may decide to reintroduce it later if you want & may work out some alternative ingredients to make it a healthier choice like low fat milk & cheese & high protein macaroni.
  9. Don't feel bad, I'm having trouble reaching my water goals and protein as well. I heard for some people it can take time. It makes it harder to get the water in due to wait time after eating keep your water bottle next to you at all times if you can.

    Post op calories per day?

I only got protein and fluid goals!

    Post op calories per day?

No I didn't receive any calorie goals or restrictins for post op phases. While some may have, from what I have seen on here, its most protein and fluids goals and for some people there may have been carbs targets or limits.
  12. I had my VSG on Monday (5 days post op now) and on full liquids. I was given protein and fluid goals, but nothing else. Did you have calorie goals/restrictions during each phase (clear, full, purée, soft)?
  13. I am hoping to have either a Gastric bypass or Gastric Sleeve in the near future. I had a gastric band approx 10 years ago. Question 2: As I've had a gastric band before are both of these options avaiilable to me. Many thanks in advance for any help or support. I really appreciate it. Lou

    Daily chronicles

I was also just leave it on Monday. On day four I started adding protein, waters and one or 2 ounces of chicken broth. They are both clear liquids but something different settled. Better in my stomach then just the plain water. Best wishes.
  15. My RNY has been scheduled for April 24th. I'm so excited and nervous. What items will I need for preop, in hospital, and the 2 week post liquid? I've ordered several protein products and my vitamins. What else? Thanks for the input! [emoji4]
  16. I found diluting my protein shake with milk/almond milk thinned it down enough so it didnt cause that heavy feeling in my stomach… may want to give that a try as well

    Inspire protein powders & eats

Since surgery, I have never been able to stomach the protein shakes. Thankfully I was told to drink milk, which I love. It packs loads of protein and you can add extra dried milk powder to it and that makes it have extra protein. Its cheap and you can flavour it how you like. I liked banana, strawberry and unsweetened peanut butter
  18. I had great success with 2 things. Biotin vitamins and vital protein powder in my coffee each day.
  19. I’m not back at work yet but this is something that I’m afraid of too. Before surgery I would often skip meals because of jumping from one meeting to another. I’m hoping that meal planning and having plenty of ready to eat/drink options will help

    Protein Shakes making me nausea

Our taste buds often change temporarily after surgery & things we used to enjoy taste or even smell disgusting or upset our sensitive healing tummies. Try bone broths, consommés or cream soups (just strain them to ensure they are perfectly smooth). Blend a high protein yoghurt to make a yoghurt drink - add as much milk as you need to make it thin enough to drink. Protein waters are also useful. Often you can tolerate a different brand or flavour of shake.
  21. Before surgery I could drink the premiere protein shakes with no problems. Since surgery they make me sick. I'm in the process of ordering PROTI 15 drink mix since that's what hospital gave me & I could tolerate it. In the meantime is there anything else I could try that's similar?
  22. This biggest challenge in the post-op process hit me this week. Work was so busy with presentations, I didn't have time to follow my nutrition schedule. Barely ended each day with my protein shakes, only one meal instead of two, and no where near my water goal. A couple of times felt so overwhelmed, knowing that I was not taking care of my needs.
  23. My question is, is cooked carrots, cooked cabbage (st.Patrick’s days) unsweetened applesauce, mashed potatoes (no skinned- mashed well), pudding sugar free- all acceptable to try? Small bites of? I know no drinking 30 minutes after eating. Well down corn beef/ bread roll is out of the option right even tho it’s soft right? My dad is doing dinner at his house on Sunday to celebrate st. Pattys and I’m trying to see what I can or cannot eat. If I should bring a shake or bring just cream of wheat and if I can add butter to my cream of wheat.
  24. High protein, low carb calorie deficit with low impact excersices! I was just consistent with it
  25. Has anyone tried Inspire Protein (bariatriceating.com)? I’m looking at their protein powders and wondering if anyone has thoughts on the taste and texture if you’ve tried it? It’s pricey and I don’t see customer reviews. Plus, they don’t offer refunds or exchanges if you don’t like the product (nor so I see sample packets like they have on Unjury). The one selling point is the flavor selection (huge). Any feedback?
