    under active thyroid

Synthroid typically can make you lose weight, if infact your weight gain is because of hypothyroidism. There is a margain of TSH levels that you should be between. If you fear losing weight you can always ask your Endocrinologist or PCP to make sure your TSH levels are on the high end of normal. That way they don't get on the low end and you go into hyperthyroidism, which can cause increase in weight loss on just about anybody. There are actually some doctors that prescribe thyroid stimulating medications to people with normal TSH (thyroid hormone) to cause them to go into Hyperthyroidism and loose weight. I don't agree with it, but it's not unheard of. Oh, and make sure you're getting your TSH checked every 3-5 months to check your levels and see if your meds need adjusting. Good luck!

    Surgery 12/27 getting nervous

I was sleeved in August and it was the best thing I've ever done for myself. I've lost 104 pounds, I'm no longer pre-diabetic, I don't have high blood pressure, I don't have high cholesterol, I've gone from #XL to L shirts and from 48 inch waist pants to 36 inch waist pants. I don't get tired as easily or sweat all of the time, I feel better, I look better. I even smell better. I have some loose skin now on my thighs and under my arms, but honestly, that's small potatoes. Compared to all of the stuff we go through as morbidly obese people, it's nothing. You shouldn't let that worry you. That's like not being sure you'd want to win the lottery because you're not sure where you'd keep all of those new cars. Loose skin is an upper level problem. Don't sweat that at all.
  3. Congrats! Your holding tight to your commitment. Your dad is probably feeling alittle threaten and fearful of loosing you. Just keep picturing yourself with this beautiful skinny healthy, glowful body and walking a happy life. He will come around. When the time is right, tell your dad that he really hurt you when he told you that you fail. I like watching cooking shows too so I can learn how to cook much healthier meals for myself and my family. Keep Rockin that Sleeve!

Love Fall - Butternut Squash Soup

I eyeball everything so this is my best guesstimate, you really can't mess this up Saute 1 diced onion 2 tbsp minced garlic 2 tbsp oil 3 tbsp maple syrup Dice 2 butternut squash and add to onions, also add chicken broth, enough to cover and simmer. (I pierce my squash and put them in the microwave for 5 min each, softens them up, easy to slice and cut. (cut off the skin)) Let that simmer until all is soft and mushy. Add 2 boxes of chicken broth and simmer for an hour. (rest of broth from saute stage - 2 boxes total) Add 1c cottage cheese (I probably could have added more, but have never made it with cc before so didn't want to mess with th taste) Mix everything with a hand blender (the stick kind or throw it in a blender) Strain thru a strainer, anything left in the strainer, blenderize in a bullet or blender. Flavor with a pinch of nutmeg, ground pepper and salt. This made about 15 cups for me and I plugged it in myfitnesspal recipe builder. For 1.5 cups: 110 calories 21 g carbs 1g fat 7g Protein Enjoy!

    Exercise Routine Post-Op

At about five weeks post-op I started going to a fitness club to lift weights and I haven't looked back since. I lift three days a week. My goal right away was to build muscle volume to give my skin something to hang on to as I lose fat, so I started lifting heavy right away (I had no surgical complications and I healed very well). I do cardio too, but weights are the priority. My body fat is way down, and I'm also about a size smaller than I was the last time I was at this weight, which makes sense since muscle is heavier than fat. I feel great! Definitely don't skimp on the weight training!
  7. My doc actually gave us a list! I have slippers to walk around in so you don't have to bend down to put them on, a "coughing" pillow or stuffed animal to hold to your tummy to prevent pain, bathrobe for walking around in, toothbrush and toohpaste, shampoo, hairbrush, deodorant, phone, charger, meds, loose fitting clothing, and LIP BALM they say your lips will be very dry. Also for the checklist they added not to wear makeup, contacts, nailpolish, or perfume on the day of the surgery, make sure your bills are paid and your house clean and there is a phone by your bed at home and someone to look in on you. Good luck everyone
  8. Congrats on making positive steps to change your life. My surgery date is Dec. 10th took me a while to decide that surgery was a good option fit me. My insurance required a 6 six weight loss program which I completed in April. When I first started my weight was 365. My current weight us. 343, I trying to loose as much weight as I ca lm before surgery.
  9. I'm only 2 weeks out but I do know several people that have had it for years and none of them have had the skin removed and they all say its not that bad that its way better than having all the fat

    September 10th check in/weigh in

Hey everyone I was sleeved on the 26th! My pre surgery weight was 299, I lost 17lbs my first week bringing me down to 282, and this last week I lost another 5 lbs bringing me down to 277 I was bummed I didn't loose AS much weight as the first week, but I can't complain too much I did loose 22lbs so far I start work on Tuesday, I'm super excited!! Has anyone gone back to work yet?
  11. I'm 31 years old and have been fat for the past 12 years or so. I struggled with anorexia in high school because my dad was always calling me fat and that if i could pinch an inch I needed to lose weight. He was physically and emotionally abusive to my mom, sisters, and I. After I got a fiance and started feeling decent about eating in front of him all hell broke loose lol. I don't know what happened but I kept gaining weight. It was like my body rebeling against me. I've tried for 10 years or so to lose weight and I'd lose a little and gain even more back. I've tried South Beach, Slim Fast, Weight Watchers, the gym, and more to lose weight and I can't keep it off. I was talking to a gal at work that just had gastric bypass and I was always one of "those people" that said "I don't need surgery, thats a cop out, thats the easy way out." When in fact I think I was just jealous of them taking control of their weight. The gal I was talking to told me about the sleeve since my only reason for not doing surgery was because I didn't want a foreign object in me and I didn't want my intestines re-routed. It was like a light bulb went off!!!! I researched everything I could and decided to do it! I looked up my insurance info and found the Northwest Weight Loss Surgery center in Everett, Wa. They had a lot of great reviews. I didnt' know what doctor to choose so the receptionist picked her fave doc for me. I love Dr. Michaelson. When I went into my consult he told me I was more knowledgable than med students he's seen!!! Makes me feel good lol. (I went to school for medical assisting and I want to be a Nurse Practitioner someday) I had my first meeting with my nutritionist this week and can't believe how much my portions really were! The size of fruit is supposed to be like a tennis ball....the oranges I buy are huge and so are the apples. I was eating almost 6 or 7 servings of fruit a day! and 2-3 servings of chicken at one meal... I told my husband I'm going to do this and he supports me although he thought that I was just going to go have my fat cut off...lol...he's silly.
  12. Hi, I am getting banded tomorrow Sept 21st, 2010 and I am a little bit nervous, not for the surgery itself but for the complications that I am willing to take. I was schedule to have gastric bypass 5 years ago, and the day before I called it off. I said to myself, I can do without surgery and here I am at 280lbs 5 years later. I was considering having gastric bypass again, and my insurance approved it, but again last week I was sooo nervous I couldn't sleep I had a panic attack at work I ended up taking the rest of the day off to calm myself. Thank my hubby for his support, he is simply WONDERFUL. Anyway, after I came home and think about it I decided to have Lap-Band because I am not going to wait another 5 years to realize I need a tool to help me loose the weight. That's how I decided to have Lap-Band. Gastric Bypass is way to drastic for me and I don't have the ***** to do it. Don't regret to have surgery because is more likely that you will be regreting not having it in the first place. **Hope you all understand what I am trying to say, English is my second language**

    Juice or not?

Well I can tolerate it I'm just wondering will it slow my weight loss down I 5 months out have lost 75#'s and need to loose about 55 more

    Juice or not?

That's seems like quite an investment to remedy constipation, and like you may just want 'juicing' as part of your regimen. Let's be clear, what you are describing is a smoothie, not juicing. By blending fruits and veggies with skins in tact and so forth you are mitigating a lot of the sugar with the fiber as opposed to juicing (extracting juice from fruit/vegetable). However, that happens with normal people with no surgery. I would double and triple check with the NUT because that may not be the case for us anymore. Flax seeds alone can be blended with water and some of the approved water enhancers. You will still achieve that gelatinous substance that will move out poop in some people. For some is not even that effective. Or you could drink slippery elm tea...It's an herb that is usually in throat coat teas or drink/take a laxative. Again, why purchase kitchen equipment for constipation???? Just seems like a vague area that could impede weight loss unless you are willing to go completely with all (dark leafy) green vegetables which most are not.....good luck.

loosening a alot of hair. ..

How much protein are you eating? You need at least 60gm of high quality ( animal based) protein. Your body has the decision ---- make new cells for skin, liver, heart or hair? Hair is optional! If you ate exercising regularly, then you. Ah need 80 gms. When were your last labs? Is your creatinine and albumin low? If they are the your are protein malnourished.
  18. There aren't specific exercises I did. I play sports, and that's about it. I guess that's just how my skin goes? But I do have excess, loose skin that hangs down. It's just in the lower stomach, so covered by the shorts in most of the pictures. Sorry I don't have anything better to share. Good luck!
  19. @@brandnewme2015 thanks! I exercise HARD and LONG twice a week, cardio. Aside from that, I try to get at least another day in per week of light exercise or strength training. Plus I chase around a toddler full time. I haven't done any specific ab work. I actually have some pretty horrible looking loose skin, but it's covered by the shorts in the picture. My stomach is the last place I gain, so it's usually the first place I lose. Just luck, I guess. Good luck to you!!

    1 Year today.

Thank you to everyone that has posted congrats and well wishes. For those whom are pre-op you will succeed because this surgery is a successful one. (of course there are exceptions). I feel the reasons I have been successful despite not having a set workout regime are: #1 My soul issue was I ate too much, besides too many carbs I ate pretty well thus the sleeve took care of that main problem. #2 I was and still am not a sweets person. No addiction to pop or sodas for me. Once I got off the carb craze I felt the benefits of Protein I was hooked. I still have a weakness for garlic bread tho:) #3 I have not been overweight all my life. Until bad birth control at 15 and pregnancy at 18 I was never overweight my whole life! I came into this world premature and severely underweight actually! I can only imagine how much more difficult it would be if I was at a BMI of 40 since I could remember. #4 I was 27 when I had my surgery. Not to discourage anyone that is older but you know what they say about age and weight loss....... Anywho- that's my take on this. I feel though anyone with a great attitude can achieve success with this surgery. It helps to have a supporting people in your life. I did not get to my goal weight until I was 11 months out so make sure you pack patience! Easier to say then do, I know. Now I have a lot of stomach fat to go and stretched skin so I am still in size 10 even though I am 146. I *think* that wouldn't be so predominant if I worked out. but I know no matter what I'll need a TT. But, I can always try working out and see that's the great thing! Thanks again to all that may read! -Angela
  21. It has been a long awesome journey...The surgery has already changed my life in so many ways...Last year I was 377 lbs for my first visit with my surgeon now I am about 250 I feel so different its amazing...I have energy, I feel healthy and my way of life is just different...I can walk up stairs without being winded i can walk around the mall and stores with no problem. I went from a 4-5x shirt to a XL...My pants went from 54 to 40-42...I want to lose another 50-60 lbs...It has slowed a low my weight lost but I am happy with my progress! If you are thinking of getting it and have doubts do not hesitate...food is not as satisfying as the feeling of a new life! It was all worth it... The only down side would be the amount of skin I already have...I am not going to stress it I will deal with next summer...it still wouldn't change my decision... I am going to post some pictures soon as well

    2 year bandiversary !

Audrey I can't wait to see your pics! I just love looking at the pics of you and your sister...what an inspiration you are! Thanks for being there for us newer bandsters. I love love love your attitude. And I agree so much with what you say about not being so tight you can't at least eat the nutritious food you need to eat comfortably. And if being not quite tight enough doesn't keep you from eating junk, well, neither will being a tad bit loose. Thank you for saying that. What a great NSV, to be walking by totally expecting some evidence of a sneer and getting nothing...you are normal!!!! Ahhh!!! Happy Bandiversary. Well done!!!!!

Body Lift ! Told My Trainer

Thanks so much for your answer, I have my pre-op Tuesday so a bit nervous. It seems you did great, and that is quite an accomplishment from a 24 to an 8! I am surprised you went from a 14 to an 8 after the surgery this is really great! I have been struggling with getting these last few pounds off, it seems to get the scale to move now I have to eat only Protein and water! I was down a bit more and it seems the only area that got smaller is the part they are going to take off with the surgery, Currently I am around 237, my goal is 225. The surgeon says that their is about 10 lbs of Skin and Fat to be taken off so that should put me just around goal. Would have like to have gotten their before but that's not going to happen and at this point I think I am ready to take the plunge. Would love to hear more about your recovery and your current wt/bmi etc. Take Care ROSS
