Sleeved 7/31 and i have only lost 18 pounds
mich replied to Esmeralda75's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm in the same boat. I am over two months out from revision, and down 19 lbs from surgery day. 202 down to 183. But I must say that I notice so much with that 19 pounds lost. Bones I have not seen in decades. I was 18 years old the last time I was in the 180's (I'm 40 now). Also many people have commented on my shrinking, and every time my husband hugs me he says "You are so skinny!" Gotta love that. When I went from 255 down to 215, 40 pounds, no one really noticed. When I hit 205, a few people asked and were shocked I had lost 50 lbs. It was like, really?? Then looking me up and down to see where. But now, losing this 19, I am getting comments like "wow you have lost a lot of weight". We all just have to hang in there! Esmeralda, it's been a month since you posted this thread, how is it going? -

sherrypep replied to Esmeralda75's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was revised on May 6th at 165 pounds. I lost another 25ish in the first 2 months or so and than stopped.I am happy where I am at but I feel I should be loosing at least a pound or two with the little bit of food I eat. -
Congrats! My revision is Jan. 24 and I am overly nervous... I wanted to ask the purpose of the binder?

Why the sleeve and not gastric bypass?
nailsbyniki replied to Ree's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I just posted a thread this afternoon about having to have the bypass revision from the sleeve for GERD reasons...I have bypass surgery scheduled for tomorrow. I eat the right foods and avoid the wrong ones, even have been on liquids for 3 days and still have terrible reflux. -
Anybody have Dr. Dmitry Nepomnayshy - Lahey - For Sleeve?
Sue Magoo posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hello: I'm a former bandster that has had a bit of a history with band. First (small) band July 2007. Slipped and revised to larger band July 2010. Then, band eroded and removed July 2013. So, my fabulous Lap Band Surgeon just recently started doing sleeves. I think he's done less than 20 at this point, but he just started six months ago. He's done thousands of bands. He recommended that I go and see Dr. Nepomnayshy for a consult prior to proceeding with the sleeve to see if he thinks I should be sleeved, and if so, should I be sleeved by someone with more experience because I may have scar tissue due to two bands and erosion. Has anybody on this forum seen Dr. Nepomnayshy? If so, please give me your opinions about him, and his group in general. It's okay to send a pm if you don't want to post for everyone to see. I have an appointment in March with Dr. Nepomnayshy. I really would prefer to have surgery with Dr. Adam Glasgow, but I need to get an experienced sleeve surgeon's opinion. Dr. Glasgow and Dr. Nepomnayshy know each other. Dr. Glasgow had Dr. Nepomnayshy observe him doing sleeves when he first started. I look forward to and appreciate your feedback. Thank you. Sue -
What Will Happen If I Don't Follow The 2 Week Preopp Diet?
Wheetsin replied to Bigdogkc's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Let's put things into perspective here. A low sugar, liquid pre-op diet shrinks your liver but it does other things as well: No solids or residues in the digestive tract. Any time a surgeon is going to be cutting into any part of your GI system, you really, really don't want any solid matter in there. It can have a benefit when dealing with post-op nausea - it's easier and generally more pleasant to expel liquids. It helps you get properly hydrated before a major surgical procedure. Better hydrated you are, the easier/quicker your recovery will be. Reduces liver size AND clears the colon. Body does not have to work hard to digest whatever is in the system. Is cheating on a pre-op diet OK? Sure, if you're OK with any of the above having the potential to be compromised. It's your surgery, and your risk to take. But if you ask for opinions, you have to accept that they are going to come from all directions. If you're looking for a particular answer, then save people the time and put that in your topic. That's only fair. ("You" is not a reference to anyone in particular, but just a general comment to this entire thread.) (To be fair, I have to insert a little warning here - I'm inserting this after the post was all written because I sort of soap-boxed... and lots of people here don't like me very much because I'm blunt/opinionated/know-it-all/adjective of choice... so if "I" am not your "thing" or you don't care for my messages or my body ain't that bootylicious or whatever, then bow out now because I'm sooo going there again...) I get both sides of it. I really do. On one hand - if you can't even make it through two weeks (or whatever), what are you going to do for the rest of your life? On the flip side, you don't have enforced will power or surgical exorcism to take help with your caloric demons, you're still feeling hungry (physically or mentally), and let's face it -- there's usually a healthy dose of "poor me" thrown in there somewhere. Keeping food away from a fat person is like the worst thing ever! (Said in my best ommigod voice). Yes, that's facetious, but not entirely... We have this mechanism called "cognitive distortion" that makes not ok things be ok, or ok things be horrible, or whatever. Example: Ugh, traffic was HORRIBLE!!! No. Traffic may have been worse than yesterday, but it wasn't horrible. A building full of babies and puppies and Ryan Reynolds burning to the ground - that's HORRIBLE. Traffic ain't **** compared to that. But when you give yourself permission to tell yourself it is, then you're giving yourself permission to believe it. What does an enflamed (not flaming!) Ryan Reynolds have to do with us, here, now? Us obese folks are master manipulators through cognitive distortion. "Well, I've already had a piece of gum... there goes that diet... I'll just start fresh tomorrow and have this cheesecake since after tomorrow I'll never eat it again..." Raise your hand if you've been there, because I certainly have. Most people who have insurance, or can self pay, or have Internet access (which in some way, shape, or form should cover most people here) have no idea what real hunger is like. We've never, truly been hungry. We have felt hunger, but we don't know it the way that people who are actually starving know it (but look how meaninglessly we throw around phrases like, "I'm starving!") But we blow our little NERF hunger pebbles into gigantic boulders. And it's all thank to the "stinking thinking" we permit ourselves to have. Being faithful to a pre-op diet is hard. But it is finite, and you know exactly when it will end. Haven't you ever thought to yourself, "If I could just do something for two weeks, and know that at the end of it I would ne skinnier/healthier/richer/sexier/whatever, I would do it?" So why is this si hard? It's important to keep away from the cognitive distortions that are going to make "cheating" OK. Is cheating OK? Not really my place to say. But I know that my sleeve surgery was worth the sincere effort & compliance. Pre-op was a great detox, and a good opportunity for a little introspection. I'm not going to tell someone it's "OK" to knowingly "cheat" in a pre-op diet. I believe in the function/purpose of the pre-op diet, and if I tell them it's OK to cheat, I'm also telling them it's not their fault if their surgery has to be revised to an open procedure, or cancelled, or takes longer because the liver was too large, or... whatever. I'm not that much of an enabler. But I'm also not going to put the smack-down on someone for eating a Cheetoh. Cheating on pre-op comes up as a topic quite frequently. It's unfortunate for the people who are truly just wondering, because I think they tend to get lumped in with the others who are looking for affirmation/justification of their bad behaviors. The problem is - it's really hard to tell the two apart. -
Need help from band to sleeve revision folks
Lindsey replied to fern's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my band removal and VSG done all in the same surgery; however, my band had been unfilled for several months prior to my surgery. I have heard several people able to have the removal and revision done in one procedure but have heard others that required some healing time after the removal. I guess it will depend on her specific condition. I was sad when I first decided to do a revision and realized my band wasn't ever going to work the way I thought it was going to...but now I couldn't be happier! I hope all goes well and she gets that band cut out! Best of luck! -
You won't regret your desicion! I was sleeved by Dr. Aceves last week Monday (revision band to sleeve) and I think he's the best - he really, really cares about his patients, as does the whole team. No pain whatsoever, way easier recovery than with the band/removal. For me .... He's worth every penny!

Medicare covered both my lapband and my sleeve revision without any of the things u mentioned. I just had to have a bmi of 40 or 35 with 1 comorbitity (mine was 40 with hypertension). Never had to jump thru insurance hoops. Had no pre op diet with my band and only 24 hrs of Clear liquids with my sleeve. Unless ur bmi is over 40, my dr doesn't require a pre op diet (unless u have a history of an enlarged liver).

This It I Am Dumping!
SusieB29 replied to shrinkingDEE's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a VBG in 98 .....I'm 2 weeks out of my revision to RNY ....... Yeah, that is a combo of not chewing and the food choices. It is 100% too soon for solids like that. You r still swollen inside. I did that "foaming and / vomiting" for 10 years! It was so bad I would opt not to eat for a week at a time. So, let your tummy heal. Be mindful of bites and I believe always take a test bite and wait, see how you feel, you'll usually know. Once this happens, I recommend a soft or liquid diet for a day minimum so it heals and your pouch is not inflamed. My two cents. -
My port flipped after surgery as well - well we believe it was the week of surgery. I didn't find out until my first fill. I too had to have revision surgery. It was a breeze. Apparently mine wasn't stitched down well and the stitches came loose. It really wasn't a big deal to get corrected. It delayed my fills (recovery and all) and well frankly ticked me off but it was so worth it!

No no no.You are just going through the same thing a lot of us felt when we were healed! Now is of course the critical decision making time.Do you want to succeed or not?How do I get back on track and stay there? Was all the suffering I've gone through for nothing and if I dont beat this now, then what? What is our options really as you cna revise to another surgery but that is no guarantee for success either. We can all eat a lot of carbs. And if we eat carbs with Protein we can even eat more protein, well I can. When I eat dense protein only,I can only eat a small portion so that should be where you start again. Protein first. What I do when I fall totally off plan,I reset.Which means this for me.For 3 days,I eat protein only. For meals, for Snacks. And I dont limit my meals to 3 but I snack on protein when I want to.By day 3 you dont feel like eating the snacks anymore and then you are ready to incorporate veggies again, and after 3 days of protein only,to me the veggies seems like heaven..lol I doubt your sleeve has stretched already at 4 months out. You've just fallen into bad habits and thank goodness your tummy will still restrict you if you eat your Proteins first. Call it a carb detox. Its tough but you can make up your own rules and your own plan and then you decide to stick to it.Take responsibility for what you eat one meal at a time. You can do this! I often read this thread of "what have you eaten today, sleevers?" and then I wonder what they would say if I would post what I ate that day?Failure! Not true.We are human and sometimes have to learn hard lessons. Now seems to be yours.Mine was at 5 months out. You can get back on track, you dont have to eat what you can eat, just because you can. This can be in your control.I can really relate to how you feel.Took me quite a while before I stopped being mad for even being able to eat all the junk I could until I gave myself a good talking to and decide to beat the flab for once and for all. So,I'll be waiting for your post that says...back on plan and feeling great!

Finally have surgery date. 4/2/13
lyndeeboo replied to kari61's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Good luck with your surgery! I'm currently in the process of doing the insurance requirements and can't imagine how excited you must be to finally have a date! I also was on track to get banded but have decided to switch to the sleeve. I've been hearing of too many people who have been banded only to have revision surgery and more than one surgery is (hopefully!) not for me. I am ready to start my new healthier life NOW!!! -
Vertical Sleeve Revision To Rny
abbybeep posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello. This is my first post over here on RNY Talk- I've been a member on Vertical Sleeve Talk for a few months. I had the sleeve on August 6th and it is has been quite a terrible journey! My surgeon could not figure out why I was vomiting daily and having trouble staying hydrated. I have a new surgeon now and he believes that he will need to do a revision surgery to the RNY. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this type of revision an what it was like? I hear your pouch is super small compared to normal RNY patients... Just looking for any pointers.... -
Vertical Sleeve Revision To Rny
Kate27 replied to abbybeep's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi, I am just looking into revision do to metabolic reasons and I am not sure I should. I had the sleeve 11/30/I2. I lost 60 lbs. SW 289 CW 229 I have been stuck this weight for almost a year I go back and forth from 232 down to 228. It is soooooooo frustrating. I have been reading up and it seems I may have a issue???? I eat 1200-1300 calories daily sometimes less and it is mostly low carb less than 50 carbs a day. Infact recently I have been doing 20 carbs a day, I don't work out like I should be I do work out at least 2 times a w aim for 3-4 though. This last week I didn't at all becasue I was sick but I am back in the game now. Anyway, I am at my wits end the hospital where I had my surgery thinks I just need to keep trying the 1200 calorie plan. Obviously my body like where it is at! UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So just curious if anyone has tried it for weight loss issues. -

I know many people have had their lives saved by the RNY, so I don't mean to talk it down at all. I just couldn't do it... and here is my partial list: - I was a revision from the band, and the complications revising to the rny were much riskier - I had a pouch when i was banded and it SUCKED. I have no idea if the pouch for the RNY behaves the same way, but I suspect it does. I don't want to vomit up food for unpredictable reasons. I spent 10 years in that hell and decided I just couldn't do it. - Mentally, I could get used to the idea that my stomach was too big and just needed to be reduced but i could never get comfortable with the RNY procedure - gave me the heebie geebies. Irrational, yes, but it was a key factor. -20 years ago the woman who was our daycare provider had the RNY. In those days they were done open, so recovery was a big huge deal. I know it isn't the same now, but i can't quite shake the memories of how ill she was and how long it took her to recover (she looked awesome though, lost all of her excess weight!) - I was convinced by the studies available that my chances of success are nearly as good with the sleeve compared to the RNY, but my risks were considerably lower. That just made sense to me. One piece of advice is to consider a surgeon who has a thriving "sleeve" practice. I did that and feel that their after care and all that was spot on for a sleever.

I had a revision from a VBG/SR from 16 years ago. Back then I lost 90 pounds and kept it off about 4 years. This time (surgery was 10/24) I had RNY and am down 27 pounds as of Monday. I had the RNY because my silastic ring from my previous surgery was migrating upward and causing choking issues. I wasn't in the best frame of mind and definitely not the best health this time around. I mainly have head hunger. I was sent home with a fork - tender diet. I've definitely been cheating (i.e. had a fun - sized bag of Cheetoes, had a piece of Halloween candy less than 5 grams) so I bought baked Cheetoes and sugar free hard candy trying to curb this. I feel like I'm failing before I start. I have really bad fibro and am extremely exhausted almost every day. I lost my insurance Nov 1st. I am working on that. I go to a support group once a month, but they don't want to be friends really. I need more than a monthly meeting. Help? Sent from my SM-N900T using the BariatricPal App

Need help from band to sleeve revision folks
Jax replied to fern's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
If there is swelling she will not be able to get the sleeve until the swelling goes down. My doctor unfilled my band 3 weeks before surgery and then took it out and revised to sleeve in one operation. I hope all goes well with your mom. -
Take 2 - 4 days post op revision tomtpux en y
emk101009 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi all. So I had my revision 4 days ago. A 45 -50 pound weight loss would be perfect but I am terrified of regain. I am so afraid I'll gain again. Is anyone out years from surgery and maintaining?? -
Wow... I didn't know there was a forum for us reversed peeps. I had rny in 2001, reversed due gi bleeds primary, as I was going to die, secondary was long term nutritional deficiencies that caused irreversible neurological/cognitive disabilities, but would've died in 2010 without reversal and I probably was the heaviest person to ever need one and had the labs of a person starving to death. My surgeon who is brilliant didn't give me a hard time at my heaviest when I gained almost all my weight back back due to meds, starting at almost 7 years post rny. I was a size 24 again in early 2010 when I begged him for a revision, because if I had to be that sick for so long, I didn't want to be that heavy, even though I had a technically performed perfect rny. He refused saying that I was sicker than Obesity could ever be a threat to me and 5 months later when he brought up a reversal to save my life , I was ready and was going to die by then after living with complications for 7 + years that just were getting even worse. And that were going to kill me . Reversals ARE a dangerous and risky procedure, by the nature of why they are needed. I am not anti-wls and I'm not even anti gastric bypass. But I am around for support which is crucial, when going through this. I didn't know anyone who had a reversal at the time of mine. And even while my wls peeps tried to support me, they didn't know how not knowing anyone else who had one, either..... As "L Colendrea" said there is a support group on Facebook, started by my FB bud Misty (who also blogs and vlogs "life in my in my frankenbelly) and I blog , too about my reversal, as well....

Im sorry for your friend. I'm familiar with a lot that she's going through. I know I'm far away, but my surgeon is amazing! He has done quite a lot of revisions and reversals. I've been through tpn, etc. It took so many years and doctors before I found him. Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul, Scripps La Jolla San Diego , CA. I hope your friend can get the help she needs❤️

This is so sad! I had the sleeve on 5/21/12 and have been having issues with GERD and acid reflux, bile reflux and esophageal spasms. I was told by my surgeon that the only solution FOR GERD is to convert to bypass. NO WAY. I told him no and I mean that. Only way I will do anything is if I get an ulcer or something. As of now, I don't have one. I will take my chances with the sleeve. Seems Gastric Bypass surgery just brings on more and more problems. Even years after having it. I am 18 months out from the sleeve on the 21st. I see a few people on there that are doing revisions from sleeve to bypass and I pray it works out for them. I feel for you ladies. I feel sad reading your post. I pray for you to get better and be able to gain weight and have your life back. So sorry this has happend to you. God bless you!!

Anyone switch insurance companies after the band???
PalmTrees posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi all. I am scheduled for lap band surgery on May 21st. I have Aetna and it is covered by insurance. Apparently fills aren't but the dr's office said they have ways of getting around that. My question is- I'm looking for a new job this summer and I'm concerned about getting new health coverage and not be covered in case of a band slip, revision, complications or future fills. Any advice? Thanks in advance...
