What made you decide on the lapband?
bigguy replied to jazzygirl40's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Lot;s of research,,LOTS. I was having the same questions in my mind. I personally communicated with dr.s on both coast., as well as my chosen surgeon. To my suprise, both surgeons contacted me personally. The one that push ME over the top for bypass was here. Awesome . Only wish I was on the left coast. Bariatric Surgery by Julie Ellner, M.D., Gastric Bypass vs. Lap Band It is a decision we all have to make, we are each our own best judge. Study, read, and pray if you wish. I am totally stoked on my decision ..I have jumped thru all the hoops..now waiting for a date, at any time now. Good luck. ken -
What made you decide on the lapband?
Kami63 replied to jazzygirl40's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What decided it for me? Well, I have known people who have had both types of surgery. Particularly one that had the gastric bypass done 14 years ago. She is by no means as overweight as she was before, but her whole life is a struggle to not gain. Since I have known her she has gained 30 pounds and 20 of that was in one year. So her weight loss has been semi permanent. Then I know someone who had the lap band in 2001 when it first was approved. She lost the weight slowly and did not have to have plastic surgery. Also, she was back to work within 3 days after surgery!! On top of these personal experiences with people who have had both surgeries, I did research and more research until I wasn't afraid anymore and I knew the lapband was what I wanted. I am still inthe struggle to be approved but I knnow it will all be worth it when I dont have to take 14 pills a day at only 25 years old. Good luck with your decision. Only you know what is right for you!!:ranger: -
Sip whatever liquid you are drinking. And take breaks in between sips. I have not yet had my revision - BUT - I had this issue the first time around - my docs office even gave me a whole sleeve of those little medicine cups (like for liquid Nyquil or whatever) - to drink out of, to prevent too big of drinks at a time. It is possible your vitamin and protein shake were taking up too much space all at once too ... Take any pills with clear liquid (water, crystal light, even Protein2o etc). Give it a chance to dissolve and move on - then protein shake. As always - CALL your doc's office if you're concerned. As they say - you know your body best and know when something isn't right.

Hello Everyone, I am new to this forum and I have a question. Yesterday I had my first consulation with a surgeon that would perform the LapBand surgery. He told me that based on my BMI which is about 60 that gastric bypass would work better and that the success rate of the LapBand for someone of my size isn't high. I really don't want to have gastric bypass. Has anyone had good success from the lapband with a BMI around mine? Please help!!! Thanks, Keysha

Totally freaked out now!!!
jrg1979 replied to sylhaven's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This "mini bypass" reminds me of the gastric sleeve. Although it may be a great surgery and even may have been a better choice for me, it is just too new and too scary. I am not willing to have my insides rerouted and/or completely removed until I know for sure what the long term effects will be. The lapband may indeed have to be converted to something else 10 years down the road. I sleep better at night knowing I will have that option when the time comes, since it is reversible! -
Getting ready to complete the journey
jkppt replied to jkppt's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Thanks for the encouragement! I will try to post more pictures today. Regarding advice, I had a failure with the lap band and was very discouraged. I was getting sick on the foods you need to eat to lose weight like dense protein. After three years of misery, I asked to have it removed. I was heavier than I was before I had the band. I also had a cap on my insurance for any bariatric procedure and if the surgeon did not feel it would be safe to convert from band to bypass, I was not going to be able to afford to self pay for a long time. It turned out she was able to convert after removal. I was not like a lot of folks that lost a great deal right away. My loss was gradual and I was committed to following the dietary guidelines. I did not drink anything with carbonation, ate my protein first in a meal, strived for sixty to eighty grams of protein and kept drinking throughout the day. I walk for exercise. A lot. Ended up with a rescue dog who needed a lot of activity or he could get destructive. So we went on two to three mile walks at least daily. I think he rescued me not the other way around. There is no one way that works for everyone. The bypass is a tool and if used properly will help with the weight loss but it is only a tool. Don't let the frustration get in the way of your goals. This site has been a great support system for me and a way to encourage when I hit a bump. And there will be bumps. -
I have primary coverage through Cigna, with Medicare as my secondary (on disability). I originally was going to have to go through all of the insurance criteria, but because I need to have a previous nissen fundoplication for a hiatal hernia repaired, my doctor was going to be able to do both at once and consider it a revision, bypassing all the insurance requirements. I got my surgery date set at June 30. I did my 2 week pre-op diet, my mom bought a plane ticket to come help with the kids, husband took off work, yada yada yada. Then, last WEDNESDAY, just a few days before my surgery, the surgeon's office called to tell me the surgery center canceled my procedure because they found out I have Medicare. Um. Did they not do their pre-cert process? Why did they wait until the last freaking minute to tell me? I'm crushed. I know it will still happen, I just have to go the longer bariatric coverage route, but it just sucks. I was completely mentally prepared for it and I feel like I got the rug pulled out from under me. UGH!

OMG!!!! I'm in shock. Your brother did the gastric bypass 10 years ago,and is now 700lbs how much did he weight before over 1000lbs? Why did he go into bad habits. You know what after reading this. I'm not even taking a sip of soda here & there. Gaining weight is my biggest fear, but reading this scare me so much seriously. I'm glad I read this. I'm sticking to my snapple tea decafe cafe, crystal light and Water. -
New: where do I introduce myself? :-)
Redhatgal replied to Katriena's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I too am sort of new. I joined about the time I had a lap band. Did well for a time then began having troubles finding the "Sweet spot". Then breast cancer and had my band deflated for fear of vomiting. I have been pretty discouraged and talked with my PCP who felt I had done as well as I can expect with the band. I have lost and gained the same 20 pounds now for months. We discussed the bypass and I am waiting to see if I will be accepted into the program. I am looking to give and get support and learning tip from those who have gone before me. -
I am 23 days post op and on soft foods now per my doc. Ever since surgery, when I eat, my stomach never feels settled or “normal”. I wouldn’t say I’m nauseous, but it’s close to it. I can only eat very little. A few ounces at most so I’m not over eating. I’m waiting 30-1 hour before drinking fluids again. I thought eating soft foods might make my stomach feel “normal” again but it hasn’t. Is this just because my stomach is still healing you think? I force myself to eat because I know I need to, but my stomach feels the same before I eat and after I eat. It’s hard to explain. I can only say that it does not feel like a normal stomach feels if that makes sense🤣 Most people say they feel “normal” after 2-3 weeks. I always feel sickly, but not to the point of throw up. Any advice or similar experiences are greatly appreciated. I see my doc for follow up on Wednesday. Also, I am a revision patient. Lap Band to Sleeve.

I need some encouragement
socalgal3 replied to WendyRae's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Maybe you should have gone for gastric bypass if you wanted immediate results. The band is a much slower process. That being said, 14 pounds in 17 days is pretty amazing! Don't be so hard on yourself. It took more than a month to put those pounds on and it's going to take more than a month to get them off. Be patient. One good motivator for me was to take measurements. Sometimes, even when the scale didn't move, I had lost an inch or more! Celebrate the NSVs, like getting off meds, exercising more, being able to fit it something you haven't worn in a while, etc. Hang in there-you are doing great! -
So what happened at *your* seminar?
steph_co replied to mommakatx2's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Lots of info, time for questions and discussion. My surgeon discussed both gastric bypass and the band and even compared the pros and cons of both. He didn't even seem to lean towards one or the other. He made a point of showing PROS for both and CONS for both. -
Questions for my surgeon... pre-op. What did you ask or wish you had?
janedavis replied to janedavis's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
wow- thanks so much for the super-helpful post. I swear it seems like now that the big day is finally here, I'm too anxious to think straight. This is such a big help! Congrats on your amazing success! I have to say, without this site, and the success I see everytime I log on, I would almost certainly be thinking about bypass instead. -
To Tell or Not to Tell???
Linda Lu replied to DeRaco's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you suspect that you won't get the support or that your family has biases agains surgical weight loss, then I wouldn't tell them...in fact, I didn't! I have heard my parents speak ill of a distant cousin who had gastric bypass and just "knew" that they would pass judgement on me as well. I also have a sister that is a workout fiend who believes strongly in dietary moderation and exercise (if it were only that simple, I wouldn't be fat!). So I chose not to tell them...except for my mom...turns out we were having a "heart to heart" one day and got talking about my diet and exercise efforts and I ended up confiding in her. I do have to say that my mom has surprised me with her acceptance of it all, but she did need to be educated first...her initial perception was that it was the easy way out and that the magic band makes the pounds melt away (again if it were only that simple, I wouldn't be fat!). She now realizes that the weight I've lost so far is really because of my dieting and exercising (OK, mostly dieting) and has an entirely different view knowing the effort I've had to put forth. -
What type of surgery are you thinking of having....band, sleeve, bypass as each has more relavent questions.

Second thoughts about Lap Band.
Sue Magoo replied to celticdreamer's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi: I can tell you that either way it's hard. But it can be done. I started at 324 and now I'm 199 and it's been only a year. Do you really want to consider altering your anatomy? Taking alot more risk if you go the Gastric Bypass route. The little voice in me tells me that those smart scientists are going to come up with a cure for obesity that works with a pill in the next 20 years. That's when I plan to have my band pulled out and be able to eat like I used to without a problem. Don't know if this will ever really happen, but the band is completely reversible. Hope all works out for you. Sue -
March 3rd is the day! I'm nervous and excited but SOOOOO scared. I'm worried that I'll be in pain 24/7 for the rest of my life and wont be able to go back to work, etc...... I told my boss today that I needed 3 weeks off but what happens if I'm not OK at 3 weeks post-op? I lift very heavy boxes and stuff like that. Also, I have my pre-op appointment next Thursday, are they going to do an EKG? I hope they do, ya know to be safe, lol. In the paperwork I got it talked very briefly about my diet after the surgery and it said Water, chicken broth and sugar free Jello for 2 weeks. I thought you HAVE to be on liquids for first 4 weeks??????? Also it says I'll probably be staying in the hospital for 2 days. I'm wondering if this was a generic letter given to all WLS patients and that part is meant for Gastric Bypass Surgery patients. I have so many questions I know and I'll have probably 50 more before my pre-op appointment. Tonight I'm going to do serious research on this site and try to ease my mind a bit. :confused2:

Hello All- Well, I am on my way to becoming a real bandster too - I got my insurance approval (see previous post- Harvard Pilgrim ROCKS!) and now my surgery date- May 13th, 2008! My surgery nurse (who is soooo nice) said that I was approved for a 3 day hospital stay. I understood that lap band surgery only required an overnight stay, but she said that she puts in for as many days stay as possible (3 for lap and 4 for bypass) and if the insurance approves it, then you can use it. I must admit that an extra day in the hospital sounds great- but 3 days sounds excessive. So, the question for all is - How many days (nights) did you stay in the hospital? How many days do you think you SHOULD have stayed in the hospital? How many days would you have LIKED to have stayed in the hospital?

I took my dd in for her 6-year well check today. We all see the same doc, and while I was there I mentioned I was getting the lap band put in in August. She said she wasn't too happy with it. She does not like any type of weight loss surgery, but did admit that the band was the least problematic of all the options. Honestly, I was surprised when she said she wasn't happy about it. She'd actually suggested I look into bypass about 3 years ago when I first started WW. Now it seems she has changed her tune. She did say that the surgeon I was using was excellent though, which made me feel better. I'm not sure why I'm bothered by the fact that she isn't thrilled about it, but I am. She'd like me to just keep doing weight watchers. Yeah, tried that, lost 70, had my gallbladder out and proceeded to lose nothing for the next year even though I was religiously following the program. And now I've gained 1/2 of that weight back. So, nope, not going to keep on the WW bandwagon, but thanks for asking! :heh: So was your doc supportive when you told them you were getting banded?

Lap Band with Hiatal Hernia?
amallis77 replied to Cadets71's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi I had a small hiatal hernia and my doc stitched it up and repaired while he was in there doing the surgery. Prior to the surgery I had bad heartburn and reflux and he said that was a main cause. With the hernia fixed and the lapband surgery I dont experience that anymore. My doc had said if it was a big hernia, he wouldn't do the lap band and I would have had to have gastric bypass. So I was glad that it was small and it got fixed. -
I cashed my retirement fund to get my band. I went thru all the emotions that exists once I made my decision. I felt exhilarated, doubted myself, had sudden thoughts of never being able to eat my favorite food, was I nuts in making this decision right up until I climbedon the op. table. It has now been one year. It took me 3 months to learn to slow down in my eating and not vomit. Now it is only occasionally. I look at what people eat in the restaurants and my mouth doesn't drool with hunger instead I am turned off by the volumes they eat. My eating tastes have definatley changed. If you want my thoughts, after numerous weight loss programmes of losing and then gaining it all back, the band is the only solution (unless you want a bypass). With the band though, it is reversable. Go for it and good luck.

I'm still in the hospital. And I'm misarable
sandyeggo replied to sprinkles13's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The same thing happened to me, once they introduced protein. I couldn't keep it down and they wouldn't release me until I could. I ended up staying a few extra days. I also had an extra amount of swelling and diaphragm spasms that made it difficult to breathe and swallow. Don't worry - they can't keep you forever! The swelling will subside. Are your nurses giving you liquid pain meds? Ask them if the doctor has ordered you any injectable pain meds. I prefered the hydromorphone injections over the lortab elixir because it bypassed my stomach altogether. When I did take oral pain meds the lortab was so nasty. They switched me to oxycodone and that's what I went home with. Don't be afraid to speak up and insist on something different! Hang in there. -
Rapid weight gain is so much worse than gaining it slowly
PaulStephens1975 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
When I first got my band I was 325lbs. Up until about 280lbs I hadn't really felt that bad and considered myself a 'healthy' fat person. As I got closer to 300-325 I started feeling worse. I got banded, lost 127lbs and stayed happily between 200-225lbs for about five years. However, I had constant reflux and heartburn from the band. About a year ago I finally had enough and had some Fluid taken out of my band. Holy crap did I gain weight fast!!! I went from 213 to 293 in less than a year and felt miserable. Gaining weight at the rate of 10lbs per year allows your body to adjust and get used to it but gaining 80lbs quickly made me feel like I was trapped in a fat suit and couldn't get out. I'm now having revision surgery next week on Tuesday, June 7th and I cannot wait! I'm so excited. I just wanted to share a brief synopsis of my journey and encourage anyone out there that is unhappy with their chosen weight loss surgery to never give up! -
Band to sleeve to sleeve revision

Maybe get a revision to the DS. -
I am still pretty nervous about the whole thing in general. I am a nurse, so a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Surgery always seemed like such a sell out for me, personally. My sister had gastric bypass and looks horrendous. Hair loss, skin sagging and generally unhealthy. On the flipside, my sister in law had the LB and looks phenomenal. I don't even know if my insurance will pay for this procedure, so that is another subject. The one thing that seems to bother me is the lump that you can feel just under the skin (the port?). My sister in law let me feel it, and I have to admit, it creeps me out a bit. I would be excited to put weight gain behind me once and for all. I am so frustrated with yo yo dieting, and all the strenuous psychological and physical work that I have put in over the years.
