    A Newbie To The Site

I'd like to thank you for responding within a timely manner. How has your experience been so far? I am to lose the weight, but I love to cook and cant seem to get past on how different it will be to make such a small meal and/or something different for the rest of my family.

    A little confused!!

I Never ha any stomach or esophagus Issues. I never really had heartburn until after surgery. But even with some of the issues I have had and feel like my body is fighting me the whole way I wouldnt trade it for the world . I am more closer to goal of normal weight than I have been in a long time. I weigh as much now as I did in 8th grade and feel GREAT! I wish you the BEST luck ..

    2 Year Surgiversary

Congratulations! I too am more of a slow and steady loser so it is encouraging to see your losing weight did not stop after 6 months! I can't wait to see your goals accomplished!
  4. I'm 2 months and 2 days and I have lost 50 lbs. the weight in the beginning went really quickly.... Within a week I had lost 20lbs... Then it just slowed. I wouldn't loose for a few days and then I'd drop 4lbs. Then I'd be at that weight for a week and then drop another 3-4lbs. It's been crazy but it's still coming off. It may seem like it's not coming off right but it is. Hang in there and you will see. Just keep following the diet.
  5. Today marks 14 days since my sleeve surgery and I am happy to report I have lost 20 pounds! I started this journey 12 months ago when I was weighed by my doctor's office during a routine check-up and weighed 288. I am 6 feet tall. That was the most I had weighed in my life and I decided it was time to take action. I was referred to a local sleeve surgeon who immediately put me on the South Beach Diet to lose weight pre-op. Because of insurance I was required to wait a certain time and follow certain guidelines. Well, two weeks ago I had the surgery and despite some complications afterward that required a second procedure I am home now resting and recovering. I am pain free and adjusting to my new body. I would like to meet other people here and share experiences. By the way today I weigh 245 pounds!

Welcome and congratulations on getting your band. It is very hard right after surgery. At first your not hungry then your staving then your focusing on experimenting with all the food stages and sometimes you lose weight and sometimes you don't. The first 6 weeks is for healing then comes the real weight lose time. You will be hungry but once you get on mushy's and then on to solids it does get better. hang in there you will do great!!!
  7. Well, I got tired of walking and exercising in front of my TV, so I joined 24 Hour Fitness yesterday and went for my first workout today! I was so nervous going in, but quickly saw all the different body shapes and ages. Yes, there were some buffed out guys lifting weights, but they paid no attention to me. Tomorrow I'm going to take the aqua class (it's one of the Super Sports Centers, so they have everything) and next Tuesday I get my free orientation so I can learn all about the big, scary machines, LOL! Anyway, I'm excited for this next new phase in my weight loss journey!

84 pounds down and below 300

@Rogoful - until today I've been riding a Catrike Expedition. It's a recumbent trike. Very fun to ride and easy on the back and seat. They say the weight limit is 275lbs, but I can tell you it handles about 400lbs. Today I'm on my road bike, and after 40 miles my backside is hurting. ????
  9. Hello everyone, My name is Jennifer and I live in Tempe, AZ. I have been considering getting the LapBand to help with my weight loss, but I'm not sure where to start my research. I've been to the seminar at the Bariatric Services at Banner in Mesa, but I found them to be very impersonal and they rushed me out instead of answering my questions. I also had one person in the seminar tell me I shouldn't be there because I wasn't "big enough". Whatever that means. If you have had the procedure done or are in the process of it, I have many questions for you. Such as: What are the steps prior to the procedure? I've heard various stories anywhere from they starve you for 2 weeks all the way to requiring to see a psychologist to make sure you can handle the life change. Can someone clear this up for me? Also, choosing a doctor. How do I know I'm getting the best possible care and I'm not dealing with a doc who just wants to make a quick buck? I've been under general anesthesia twice for knee surgeries and it scares me to know that I'll have no control over what they do when I'm out. The first time I was under, the doc botched up my knee. The second surgery was to correct what the first doc screwed up. I don't want to make the same mistake with my organs! Are there any websites for surgeons in the area where I can check their backgrounds and get reviews from former patients? Here's a questions for those who can answer: Is this thing removable? If I decide several years after the procedure that I don't want it in my body anymore, will there be complications to removing it? What are the follow-ups after the procedure like as far as frequency and duration? What's the recuperation time after the procedure? How much work could I expect to miss? My email is Siobhan_Ra@hotmail.com is you would like to email me any information you have. Thanks for looking! -Jenn
  10. Hi, new to the boards. Been lurking some. Got my insurance approval last week and am now waiting for Dr Kim's scheduler to call me to get things rolling. I have a sleep study scheduled for 4/8 but that's it so far. Currently I'm at about 367 pounds and am 5'11". I am 41 years old. Ideally I'd like to lose around 200 pounds. My story is the same as alot of you. I've always struggled with weight, have had some success in the past with diet and exercise, but always end up regaining everything and then some. I always thought I'd be one of the 5% who take it off and keep it off forever. It's only taken me 20 years to realize that I'm not one of the 5% and it's time to take a different road. I am nervous and excited about the journey before me.

    Hello From Maryland!

I was banded by Dr Ariel Ortiz in Tijuana, Mexico. He's a great Doctor, very personable. His clinic is very clean and they treat you great. I recommend him highly. Now if only I had stayed on my liquid diet and lost some weight I'd be happy. I hope after my first fill on the 29th of June I'll be good to go

I've been reading these boards for months, too! It's a great place to come for information and emotional support. Congrats on your weight loss!! I was just banded this past Friday, and your story is very inspiring to me.

I was banded last monday. I was feeling really good restriction until yesterday. I am managing to only take in about 1000 calories per day but it's hard, especially now that I don't feel full as quickly as I did a few days ago. I'm supposed to be on full liquids this week but I have been cheating and eating soft foods, which I don't necessarily think is a bad thing, as long as my calorie intake is not too high. I get really encouraged by speaking with others who are on this journey.. get a facebook page and join all the support groups you can find! I found a band buddy and we share recipes, and stories about how we are feeling. They say the people that have the most support are the most successful. I haven't told many people in my real life, but I am getting advice daily from people all over the world! Hang in there! choose the right foods, avoid too much cardio exercise for a while try more resistance training. Weight loss doesn't happen instantly.

Don't quit. Just keep it up. Keep busy, plan your meals, exercise. Remember u didn't get over weight in 5 weeks so don't get so discourage and do the best u can. You have invested a lot of time and money into this, you can make it work. Give it all you've got.

I couldn't agree with 4anewme more. I am just starting this journey. My surgery is scheduled for May 16th. At first I kept thinking that I would have the surgery and magically drop weight; however, the more I thought about it and talked to different people, I realized that I didn't gain all of this weight overnight and it would be unrealistic to think I could lose it overnight. With that being said, hang in there. Every day will not be a bed of roses but with determination and consistency, you can and will reach your goal. Good luck!
  16. My husband and I are both banded but 3 years apart. Its good living with somoene with the same attitude to huge meals and junk food but other than that we're on our own journeys. Our attitude to exercise is poles apart - he will only walk, i'm a fitness freak so we do that separately most of the time and he's happy to be "not obese" anymore, whereas for me, this was always going to be a way to get right down to a low BMI. For DH, the band has worked the way it does for the average person, he lost that 60% of excess weight. So to other people it still looks liek I'm someone who takes care of myself and that my DH is a couch potato, which is pretty much true. He hasnt used his band in any way like the way I've approached mine. That's OK, we're happy enough to be supportive of one another but people are different and be prepared that it might not be some idyllic together journey where you gently complete with each other to lose pounds and excercise together every day. One of you might be wildly more successful than the other!
  17. Hello I am Abby, 31, mother of 4 and 302lbs as of this morning. I am setting a personal goal of 170 which is a lost of 132 lbs. I have taken the first step, got the referal from my doctor, contacted the weightloss center, talked to my advocate, and I am getting all my requirements filled. Just waiting on a Physch eval and i was told that my surgery could be 30-90 days away. I am excited and neverous all at the same time. I am choosing the band over the other surgeries, because it seems less dramatic and still puts the responsiblity on me. I actually do not have a problem losing weight, but keeping motivated and not getting discouraged is my problem. I need more help than I can give myself alone.
  18. On Nov. 28, 2009 I had lap band surgery in Burlingame, CA. My suergeon Dr. Pamela Foster is great. Afte about 6 months I was throwing up all the protein I was eating. I could keep a little soup and frozen yogurt down. After 8 months of constant throwing up and every test known to man kind they decided to remove the band. They did a sleeve so I wouldn't gain any weight back as I had lost about 70 lbs by then. While they were in doing the sleeve they found the scar tissue had wrapped around my esophogus and had been causing all the sickness. The opened it up and once I learned how to eat again I lost another 30 for a total of 100 lbs. I had the sleeve surgey Nov. 3, 2010. I feel great and look pretty good but my stomach is still na little sore and would love to find out what I should be eating. I was trained what to eat with the lap band and keep going back to that mind set. I would love to find a menu of what I should be eating with the sleeve.
  19. I'M WAITING ON INSURANCE APPROVAL. Everything seems to be happening quickly. It was just under a month since Ive gone to seminar. My bmi is over 50 w/hypertension and ive had weight counseling for the past year, but to no avail. ive meet with surgeon, pyschologists, and had upper gi. I'm nervous and excited at the same time. My surgeon does not require liquid diet prior to surgery, instead wants me to do atkins diet(no carbs) 1 week before surgery. He only suggest 1 week liquid diet post surgery too. Anybody out there tried this before? help?
  20. Hello, I want to introduce myself, this is my first post, but I've been reading this site for over 2 months and have learned a lot of things. I got sleeved on July 19th, so I'm almost 3 weeks out. I've lost 28lbs so far, but I've notice this week that I've only lost 1lb. Everyday is getting a little easier as far as energy goes, but I still can't seem to figure out my new tummy. I am on mushy/soft food stage but it seems that everytime after I finish eating, i have a uncomfortable feeling on the top of my esophagus, like the food is just sitting there. It takes about 30-45 mins to go away. I don't think I'm over eating but now I think maybe I am. It doesn't hurt if I take like 3 bites, but I've tried that only thing is that I feel hungry within an hour, so I try to get in more, It takes me about 30 mins to get in like 8 bites. Anyone else experience this? what do you recommend? That's the only complaint I have other than that everything is going good. Well I'm looking forward for the months to and years to come so all this weight could come off and I can enjoy life again, and be of some help to other new sleevers. Thanks Hilsia

Just to update you all, on Tuesday I saw the Bariatric Nurse, the dietician and the Clinical Psychologist. The nurse was a little concerned about my potassium levels, (I have a lot of Water retention and am on diuretics) but other than that was fine. The dietician wants me to lose 5% of my weight over the next four weeks, ouch! So am back on liquids only. The Psychologist (the one I was most concerned about) was an absolute sweetheart, very encouraging and although thinks I may find some counselling useful, due to 'some childhood difficulties' has backed my surgery 100%. Yeah. I have a follow up appointment in four weeks time and hopefully if I have managed to get rid of my 5%, I will be given a date for meeting my surgeon. Only after that meeting will I be given a date for surgery. Keep everything crossed for me as the next four weeks will be crucial.
  23. Hello everyone, I had my sleeve done on May 23rd,2011 at 2:45pm at Scripps Mercy Hospital. My surgeon is Dr. Laurance Tanaka. My beginning weight was 223 pounds. I am 5'6" and 51 years old. The surgical experience and the staff were great. I have not had any problems or complications. I stayed in the hospital for four days. The night of surgery I was up walking with my iv pole in tow. I walked several times a day while admitted and attended the exercise class offered for post surgical patients. My one week discharge appointment yielded a 14.5 pound weight loss. I encourage everyone to comply with the program. Follow your doctors instructions, exercise (walk), and stay hydrated. I am now intaking about 40 ounces of fluid daily. My diet is one protein shake a day and all protein soft foods. Currently I am eating fat free cottage cheese, mashed beans, greek yogurt, soft fish, shrimp, scallops, and crab meat. Eggs and tofu are encouraged however I don't like either. My next appointment is June 29th and I will be introduced to more foods. I look at this opportunity as a new beginning and I look forward to returning to my previous vigor. I am happy to be on this site and I will answer any questions.
  24. I've struggled with my weight since puberty. When I was younger, I was always in state of weight change - I was either losing or gaining. I never learned how to maintain my weight. I'm in my early 40's now and I have been losing and gaining the same 25 pounds for over 10 years. Like many of you, I have tried so many diets - Weight Watchers, Atkins, Jenny Craig (on which I gained weight), Slimfast. I've tried walking, Pilates videos, gym memberships. The only physical activity that I enjoy is swimming/water aerobics. I can stick to a diet plan, but not to an exercise plan. I have learned so many ways to talk myself out of exercising. In the recent past, I have had the most success with an appetite suppressant which my PCP prescribed. For many good reasons, he will not prescribe it for more than 3 months; nor do I want to be on a dangerous medication. I recently changed jobs and my new health insurance may cover WLS. Since I did well with the diet pills, I think that the Lap Band will be finally be a solution for me. If my physical hunger is under control, I can overcome the mindless eating due to boredom, the emotional eating, and stress induced carb binges. Next week I have a sleep study to confirm a diagnosis of sleep apnea. (My prior health insurance's meager contribution to that test had made it unaffordable.) The morning after the test, my husband and I are attending the WLS surgery seminar at Cleveland Clinic - Florida.

When you dont have the support

Hey. I looked at your profile and saw that I was only a few months older than you. I can understand how parents can have a big role as a support system, but it is your life. If your mom was supportive of you getting gastric bypass, then she should be OK with you getting the band. Maybe it's because you've backed out of WLS before, and she wants to make sure you're serious about it. My parents aren't thrilled about the surgery, but they understand my weight struggle. My dad has brain cancer, so understandably my WLS surgery and journey aren't much of a priority and is on the back burner in my family. I will be doing this mostly on my own. It might be hard, but it's doable. Just try to explain to your mom how you've tried Weight Watchers 2 times before, and it didn't work. The band has you lose weight the "real way", but you have assistance and something to fall back on so you don't fail along the way. It doesn't do the weight loss for you- you do it on your own.
