    Alcohol and the band

Every doctor has different opinions on that. One drink occasionally should be fine. Account for the calories by eating lighter throughout the day or getting extra exercise. Be mindful it will affect you more post weight loss. I actually had not had alcohol at all after my surgery, until I was in Brazil last week and tried a caipirinha. Life is for living!

    Alcohol and the band

It's normal for alcohol tolerance to drop with weightloss. My understanding is also that the problem with alcohol is that it's liquid calories so it will generally slow weightloss and in excess it can affect our ability to at attention to what we eat and could lead to vomiting which is especially bad for bandsters. Once you're on normal food having a single drink of hard liquor or wine a night should be fine and there is research to show it is healthier than having both none or 2+.

    Ongoing Lessons

I just had to ring in and share some lessons I've been learning throughout my short journey so far (Banded April 28th) I know and am open to learning more but wanted to share in the hopes of helping others in their journeys through lap-band-land. Things I've learned: 1) I don't blame my lack of weight loss on my band, it cannot force me to exercise or eat the right things. 2) I don't give all the credit of my current weight loss to my band either, I still have to monitor my calories and nutrients to continue to lose. 3) My skin will sag if I don't do weight bearing exercises to offset this, and in areas where my fat is concentrated (for me its my INNER thighs...) I will still have some residual sagging skin. 4) Unless I get a boob job, my breasts will sag and never be 'perky' again...this is meaningful to me, to others its not, and I respect that. 5) If I PB, I don't curse the band, I curse myself. 6) I love my band, I love the choice I made, some days are better than others, I accept that and I do not dwell on the bad (even though its hard sometimes) 7) I am learning everyday about things I can and cannot eat. I can eat things others that are banded can't just as others can eat things I cant. 8) I get my fills when I need to, i.e. if I'm not losing, I don't go on a timed schedule. 9) I've had a bad fill experience (overfilled) I had some taken out and have been fine every since. I don't blame my fill doc, or myself for not noticing right away, but I learned from the experience. 10) I respect everyones individual journey, I think everyone needs to take responsibility for their own weight gain/loss. IMHO, the lap band has made many unhealthy people healty. Like anything, everyone handles change differently and each person has their own individual expectations. I sincerely admire everyone who is on this journey and respect your choice to change....GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!

    Alcohol and the band

The single drink a night actually seemed to help my weight loss and diabetes consistently but the general concern is the calories (there is some bio-chemistry research which makes that concern seem dubious to me but that research is hardly a consensus)

    Give me ideas

Funny that you say that...I have been trying to stay away from the soft stuff...it does nothing to satisfy me and I don't want to waste my calories on that! I want to thank everyone again for your input.

    Walden Farms Products

While looking for a low carb syrup to help take some blandness out of my Protein shakes, I came across a company called Walden Farms. They say there products have "no calories, fat, carbs, gluten or sugars of any kind! Has anyone tried these products? If so how did they taste? And are they worth paying $3.75 a bottle for them?

    No energy!

Some people heal faster than others. Your body may still be in full-on healing mode and need the extra rest, especially since you don't have a sedentary job. Be kind to yourself and rest if you can. You just had major surgery and your body is having to adapt to not getting enough calories from your food and switching to fat-burning.

Is this actually possible? (muscle gain vs. stall?)

It's extremely difficult for your body to build lean mass during weight loss. Why? You need a calorie surplus to do so. What IS very common is for your body (for a number of reasons) to replace fat loss with Water gain, hence the Fluid shifts you''re seeing. Especially in the early weeks of a workout program, there is muscle inflammation (which means water!) as the result of the increased work. At six weeks out, you are only just at the end of the most major part of your healing. You may be contributing to your still by not eating enough if you are only getting in 750 calories/day. At six weeks out (plus your preop diet), your body has been in a big time calorie deficit that your body has likely slowed your metabolism down to compensate. I learned this by going and having my RMR tested. I was about nine weeks out at the time. My metabolism was at 60% of what would be expected for my age and gender. The PhD in exercise physiology I worked with exhorted me never to eat less than my RMR each day. Mine is more than 1200 calories - I suspect yours is even higher than that.

    Typical Meal?

I believe in the starvation mode thing, for a few days I only ate between 8-900 calories and my body would not let go of one ounce. Then I increased to 12-1300 calories and a pound just dropped right off. Im now trying to maintain that range daily. Everyday im down a few ounces now it seems. Try eating more mushy foods if you can't get enough of the solids in for awhile. Or get a slight unfil maybe? I haven't had my band long enough to an expert at all though. Yet still im compelled to give my oppinion lol. Yesterdays meals: Breakfast: Atkins shake + One scoop of protien powder (Unjury), SF chocolate pudding cup. Lunch: 1/2 can tuna, 3-4 T. Miracle whip, 1/2 Avacado cubed and mixed in with tuna mixture, 15 Kashi crackers. Supper: Crock pot cooked Pork roast 1/2 cup, 3 baby red potatoes, 2 bites or so of cooked carrot, a few bites of boiled onions. Water: more than 80 oz., liquid multi Vitamin, Calcium chew, 1500 mcg Biotin. All of this was between 12-1300 calories.

    Typical Meal?

In my opinion it looks like you are not eating enough... have you tracked your calories? You need to be between 1200-1500 or otherwise your body will hold onto any food ittakes in thinking you are starving it. It also does not look like you are getting 60 grams of protein in a day either. Breakfast - Low Carb Slim Fast - 20grams protein per serving Instead of a Liquid Protein try a solid protein like scrambled egg whites they go down easier then real eggs add a piece of turkey sausage or turkey bacon. Lunch - 1 cup taco soup - PB'd on the last bite Instead of a soup which again is liquid calories try eating some sliced lunch meats with some sliced cheese, it wil lstay with you longer and has more protein. Snack - 1/2 cup dry Cherrios Dry cheerios are full of carbs which does nothing to curb hunger and will only make you crave more carbs, how about trying a Protein Bar, it is solid and will stay with you longer Supper - 1/4 cup tuna, 1/2 cup green beans - PB'd the green beans Snack - 1/2 c no sugar added vanilla yogurt Again yogurt is a soft food and we all know soft or mushy foods do not stay long in your pouch. If I needed a snack Iwould eat a handful of nuts with a piece of string cheese they both have protein and are solids. Water - Consumed 4 16oz bottles today between meals/snack times What is your current fill level? I ask because if you can not eat solids without slime or PB you may be a tad too tight. Having as little as .1 or .2 cc's removed will make a difference in being able to eat solids, one thing my Dr. stressed to me was if I PB more then once a week, Iam too tight, he told me I should beable to eat solids without PBing, If I cant then Iam too tight. Something to think aboutPbing often is not good for your band, too tight of a band is not good for the longebity of your band and does not help with your weight loss.
  11. Great job everyone! I was tempted not to post today, because I had a slight gain, but I figured I might as well...helps keep me accountable. Last week: 227.0 This week: 227.6 Gain of 0.6 lbs Not quite sure why I had the gain. I was within my calorie range, but I will say some of my food choices weren't great. I also think I need to start getting more of my calories earlier in the day. I get to the evening and find I need more calories to get to my recommended amount, so I'll eat pretty late. This week is going to be rough because I'm going to be traveling and eating out a lot, but I'm going to try to keep in control. We'll see what the scale says next Friday!
  12. *Misty, good for you for staying accountable. I find that's really important. An idea, take a look at the sodium content of the not so great food choices. I find that there is a TON of sodium in most of my go to not great food choices and that ALWAYS causes a gain for me! Try to drink some extra Water today and see if that helps. And eating more of your calories earlier in the day is a great idea. Some camps say that your biggest meal of the day should really be lunch. Some say Breakfast and some say it doesn't matter! LOL! Try one and see if it helps! *di, Congrats! You are SO close to goal! WhooHoo!!!

    drinking alcohol

wine, vodka cranberry, Malibu w/pineapple juice, or strawberry daquri's. That way you don't have the carbonation, but still LOTS of calories! I tend to get buzzed faster, but I attribute it to the weight loss not necessarily the band per se'.

    drinking alcohol

I too stick to wine. My doctor said no carbonation of ANY kind, so I regretfully gave up my beer. I probably won't really miss it until summer. Nothing better on a hot day than an ice cold beer.... the wine did buzz me pretty fast. I also got a little dehydrated so I had to increase my water consumption. Be sure to watch your calories the next couple days.

    drinking alcohol

I also am not a heavy drinker, like you I only drink a couple of times a year. The first time I had a drink (post band) was on New Years Eve. I drank beer, and it went down well, no bloating etc. I also downed a few shots. I have heard stories of other people, with bands, getting drunk very quickly and not being able to drink as much as they did pre banding. This wasn't the case with me. To get rid of all the extra calories I consumed I did a lot of extra exercise for the week after drinking. Amy

    No Success...?

It must be very frustrating and disappointing for you knowing that other family members have done well and you are having problems. when you say you are having chicken and drinks... for starters... what sort of drinks? alcohol? have you done a daily count of calories, fats, carbs etc? it could be that you arent getting enough ? just off the top of my head... i would do this, start a daily diary, put down everything that id eaten and work out the food values. do that for a week. also.... if you are having drinks that arent alcohol and are sugar free then they arent the issue. If you are having alcoholic drinks and other drinks with sugar, then thats an issue.

    Weight

You have done fantastic! Congratulations! As Llyra said, you might just be on a plateau. Plus remember, the closer you are to goal, the slower the losses become. Are you tracking calories? You might gain some insight if you track calories in and calories out. Just a thought. You might try shaking up the diet. Changing the amount of fat, Protein, and carbs. Or doing a different type of exercise as previously suggested. As to the need for a fill. Are you hungry often? If you need help with hunger, then you need a fill. Otherwise, no. Meanwhile, keep up the great work! You are only 20 lbs from goal. So many people are fighting that last 20 lbs!
  18. Going To Be Interesting

You know maybe this wont be as bad as u think it would be. I dont think any hospital would advocate someone clogging their arteries with saturated fat in order to gain weight. Personally i think u should keep on the low fat side of things like milk and salad dressing but make sure he has those replacement meal shakes for additional calories, plenty of healthy pasta and maybe large amounts of protein like big steaks. Putting on weight in an unhealthy way to me is just as bad as not putting weight on at all. its about increasing good calories and not increasing the bad, i am sure u can find a working solution. Good luck and i wish him a speedy recovery and you your sanity !

    Pre op Menu

My surgeon requires a two week pre op diet of 3 Protein shakes a day (80 grams daily) and a under 300 calorie meal. I just use the Weight Watchers frozen meals to make it easier.

I survived the jerky incident. Thank God. Today was pretty good. Not much to say. I rode my bike for 10 min. I will work up slowly as I heal. I consumed 650 calories today. Tomorrow is my weigh day. We'll see how much I've lost my first week of being banded. Until next time....
  22. Okay this one really goes out to those veteran sleevers. So, I am 13 months out now. I have lost pretty much all I could safely lose (a lot of people think ive gotten too thin) I'm getting to the point of becoming UNDER weight (which is hilarious frankly...ive never been thin in my life...literally). That's really the problem. I have started training for this 1/2 marathon and the running is making me lose weight to a point that is making me nervous. I am already wearing a SMALL right now...i just dont know what to do. No one really seems to understand--people say stupid stuff like "just eat more"....as though I could even if I wanted to?? I mean dont get me wrong I eat 3 or 4 meals a day...and I do eat very healthy meals...but i just dont know how to replace those calories I burned of running safely. My mother says shit like "go eat a grilled cheese"...which makes me crazy! My trainer says go drink weight gain powder...which goes against all logic in my book. My surgeon said (btw Im a 6'0 man) I dont want you to get into the 160s...if you do call the office. well that was 3 weeks ago...i weighed 173 then...NOW in just 3 weeks i lost 10 lbs. I'm losing my mind here. and frankly, am getting a little scared...i dont know how to make it stop. But, at the same time I WANT to do this race...for me...because ive never been able to run more than a few feet in my life without being out of breath. What do yall do?? please help me.

    Working out post op

If you're working out vigorously, do you adjust your calorie or protein intake?
  24. My opinion? Up your calories to 1200 -1300. We weigh about the same, and I notice when I'm not eating enough I stall out. Especially with as much as you (and I) are exercising. And what @@Inner Surfer Girl said....
  25. You know I was really stalling out and thought man what in the heck is going on? So I talk to my surgeon, my nut and my trainer and even though 90% of the time I never go over 1000 calories myself they said I need to go a little higher sometimes to break that stall. So for two days I ate 1500 calories introduced some carbs that I would not normally and took off three days from the gym and when I got back on track and broke though that stall. It was kinda torture to miss the work outs and eat some thing but it was worth it cause nothing is more annoying and disheartening then hitting a stall when you are doing so well! Good luck!
