This was officially the first time I had cereal/granola since surgery 3 yrs ago. 187 calories for the bowl shown. it was actually kinda too sweet for me, but I haven’t eaten all day and I was pretty hungry. Ate enough to get rid of the “hungries”…am way behind on my grocery shopping these days so this is the best I could do. It was either this or cookies or chips! -
Am I done losing after 5 months?

Have you guys tried to shake things up during your stall? Not your diet/calories but other things like doing different exercises (if you walk 3x a week start biking or doing stairs), or trying intermittent fasting. If it were me I would focus on protein goals and start doing body weight (strength) exercises -

Yeah, everyone is different. Personally I focus on calorie counting because its what I know. If youre feeling hungry all the time, its cause you need more protein and veggies (at least thats what my dietician told me.)

Sometimes it takes eating MORE to break a stall. Stalls occur for a couple of reasons: 1) to let your body catch up, and 2) because your metabolism is in starvation mode. If you eat MORE it may trigger your metabolism to speed up since it's no longer in starvation mode. It's counter-intuitive to eat MORE, but it frequently works. Perhaps you could eat 1100-1200 calories a day and see what happens.

I was always hungry since the day I got out of surgery. I had been on metformin for weight loss (I don't have diabetes) and it made me less hungry, so after I couldn't stand being hungry all the time, they put me back on it, and it has really helped a lot. Some people get nausea or diarrhea from it. I also would talk to your nutritionist about how much you SHOULD be eating. It could be that you're eating too little and actually need to increase your calories. I haven't tried contrave but make sure your insurance will cover it because it's going to be very expensive most likely.

I've not done this, but I do know Contrave affects cravings and reduces hunger. Given you are already only eating 800-1000 calories a day, I would question why this is even needed. Have you consulted with the nutritionists at your practice? Every place is different, but at mine, they expect me to be at 1200 calories at 6 months, maybe more if I am exercising seriously 5-6 times a week. Have you tried increasing your calories to see if that would help?

I am 6 months post op from sleeve surgery. I've lost 73 pounds from my highest weight, but only 58 pounds since surgery. I'm eating 800-1000 calories a day, getting my protein and liquids, taking all my vitamins and exercising 5 or 6 days a week. The weight loss has stalled over the last 2 months, and I am so frustrated. I feel great physically, but am discouraged and disappointed. My primary care doctor spoke to me yesterday about trying Contrave. Have any of you tried it after surgery? What was your experience?

My program is protein, veggies/fruit, and some carbs. Stay 5 grams of fat or less per serving. No added sugar. I don’t count calories. Eat till comfortable, no more. Keto foods are tricky because some are great, but some contain too much fat. Seems to be working and doable long term.

Some plans provide caloric goal, others portion size & some a combination of both. Mine was just portion size (1/4 cup to begin increasing to less than a cup at 6 months & goal) & low carb, low fat, low sugar & high protein. There were days all I ate was protein & nothing else to begin. I slowly added vegetables to one meal a day (about a tablespoon) & gradually increased the amount & added some fresh fruit as the weeks & months passed. In maintenance, I’m still careful about portion size, keep an eye on my calories, avoid processed foods & keep to lowish fats, lowish carbs (only complex whole & multi grain carbs) & low sugar. As most have said above, it is always best to follow your plan unless you can’t & then work out an alternative plan with your dietician. Also ask them for more direction & recommendations around calories, nutritional advice, etc. It’s important you feel comfortable & confident about your eating plan.

Exactly. In maintenance you discover what works for you & allows you to continue to maintain your weight & if that includes the occasional snack that’s fine. I keep macadamia nuts, roasted fava beans & nut squares in my cupboard - lowish fat, lowish carbs, about 100 calories & 3-7g protein. Mainly to have on hand if friends drop by for a drink or cup of tea but I do sometimes have a nibble. Fava beans last week, nuts a couple of weeks ago, nut squares … can’t remember.

As everyone said, there are as many different eating plans as there are surgeons. My doctor's plan was lowish-carb (not keto low, but controlled). It emphasized protein first, then veggies and not pushing my restriction. He said if I did that calories would take care of themselves and it did work out that way. I tracked (and still do) everything I eat so that I am aware of how many calories I am taking in and what the macros are. I actually also eat about 6 mini-meals per day rather than 3 "big" meals. But if eating that way isn't working for you, try the more traditional 3 meals per day approach. Low-fat has never worked for me as it leaves me hungry, but your body might react well to it. Different bodies thrive on different approaches. At 6 weeks out, you are still very early in the process. Ask your bariatric program what they recommend and then adjust as needed to accommodate your body's needs.

The answer is: Yes! All of the above. Low cal, low fat and low carb. At least low complex carbs (like bread, cake, rice, potatoes, pasta, etc.). Simple carbs, like vegetables and fruits are welcome. One suggestion: eat 3 "big" meals instead of 5 small meals. And by "big" I mean until you feel your stomach full. Then don't drink any fluids for an hour (I go up to two hours) and that will stave off the feeling of "hungry", because you're not flushing the food out of your stomach. The point is to fill your little stomach to capacity (not over!) and keep it full for as long as possible. If you eat small meals, you'll always feel hungry, and may end up eating 6, 7, 10.... small meals, which add up to more calories than 3 full meals. IMHO, at 6 weeks, you should be cleared for raw veggies and fruits, so have 3-4 oz of meat each meal, then fill up on salads and fruit. Then stop. No snacking in between meals, because you still feel full. Should shoot for 600-700 calories a day at this stage, all included.

My program focuses on balance, and not necessarily being low carb or even super low calorie for the long term. At my 2 month appt, they were pushing me to get to at least 1000 calories. That struggle is still real for me and I just closed out month 3. I'm hitting that calorie goal some days, and not so much other days. If you are losing weight and feeling good, I wouldn't worry about changing something that is working. Have you spoken with your surgeon's office to get their advice? That's where I would start.

Hi all! So I’m in need of some info.. are we low cal, low fat or low carb? See the reason I ask is because low carb is high fat, high protein.. but I thought fat was not good for us… now that I am almost 6 weeks out (Friday makes exactly 6 weeks) I’m feeling hungrier. I eat 5 small meals, but if I actually eat I’m looking at more calories. I’ve been creeping upwards around 950 calories a day. When I used to do keto, I never looked at calories. Help!

no more dairy...ugh! Breakfast?

I'll be honest I don't know---I can't emphasize enough this whole debacle has wreaked such havoc on my system (nearly making it impossible to eat or even drink fluids sometimes) that I'm really, really not looking to begin experimenting on how close I can get to the edge before I begin having problems. There have been times I have felt like I was wasting away vs losing weight--there have been days I haven't even broken 100 calories because of the discomfort and I felt sick, weak, and loopy. The good news is that since I eliminated dairy, whatever component of it is bothering me, I feel better than I have since 3 weeks after my surgery, so for now, anything milk-based is a full embargo. That is my personal decision based on the fact I'm just enjoying getting back to not feeling afraid everything I put in my mouth is going to hurt me. I'm sure it won't be that much of an impediment, there are lots of vegan sources of protein out there and at this point eating isn't really supposed to be fun. Tuna has been enjoyable and comfortable to eat and I think I may expand it into my breakfast regimen. -
100% agree with Sunny. I log everything I put in my mouth: food, calories, protein, carbs, fat, even vitamins/minerals. That helps me see whether I need to change something to get my body back to losing weight. I don't trust myself if I don't log everything. 😅

Maybe try to get the tempting foods out of your house. I was test baking for the holidays and I made pumpkin muffins on Sunday night. I immediately called my sister up and asked her to come and pick some up so that I don't end up eating them all (the recipe made 16). Unfortunately, my sister couldn't come and get them until today (Tuesday) due to work and I ate far, far, far too many of them (2 on Sunday, 3 on Monday, and 2 on Tuesday) before she could come and get them. Keep in mind, each muffin is about 180 calories so I felt sooooo guilty! But... I weighed myself today and somehow after not losing anything since September 29th... I lost a pound. I don't even know what the heck is going on anymore 🙄

You might be in a stall. They happen. They're frustrating. And they all break. Just keep following your plan. If you're truly stuck for like a month, then ask your nutritionist about shock calories—a week of an extra 100-150 calories to get your body to think something else is happening. Are you measuring yourself? When I hit my three-week stall, the inches kept coming off even though the scale change was pokey.

My favorite RTD shakes are Quest, unfortunately right now I can only get them from Amazon! The chocolate almost tastes like choc milk. I've been on the pre-op since Saturday. I was drinking Campbells chicken noodle, adding the can of water and then straining it. I saw Swanson's last night and decided to buy a can. One can is a serving, calories for the entire can is 20 and 2 gr of carbs. I add a little salt and pepper, it was very good. I went to the grocery store this afternoon and got a carton and picked up two cans of their beef broth. Hopefully it will be just as good.

From a chef's perspective. I wanted to keep things interesting. Just because I had do drink a ton of broth doesn't mean I wanted to give up flavor. These are my favorites: Zoup Brand Chicken Bone Broth (more protein than their regular broth which is also good.) Rich rich roasted chicken flavor. Low calorie, lower than average in sodium. Target brand Good & Gather Ramen Broth (more sodium but good caloric count) Chicken broth with good ginger and scallion flavor with a hint of toasted sesame oil. Good & Gather Pho Broth: Same as the ramen nutritionally. Star anise, ginger and a bit of cinnamon. For a protein shake replacement I can not recommend the Unjury Chicken Broth mix enough. It tastes like Mrs. Grass soup with parsley and that really condensed chicken flavor. FYI, they also offer a chili flavor. PASS on it. It was one of my purchase regrets. Of course, if you can make your own you it's so much better but not everyone has time for that as to do it correctly takes hours. I am in the midst of opening a gelato shop so I had no time. Cheers

I'm on the pre-op diet. Canned Swanson chicken broth is good. I add a little salt and pepper. The whole can is a serving, it's 15 or 20 calories. 1 or 2 carbs. I just got beef broth, I'm going to try it tomorrow.

Kind of like flavored popcorn. And they come in a decent sized bag for 100 calories and 17 grams of carbs.

Monster makes a few flavors in their "recovery" line that aren't carbonated and have like 10 calories in the entire can. They also make those big Gatorade-like "Hydro Monster" drinks, but be aware only one flavor is zero sugar and the others have a similar sugar and calorie count to a full-octane Gatorade so watch the labels.
