RNY vs. VSG... Feeling RNY pushed to VSG
baconsher replied to swinglifeaway's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was one who chose adversely to the sleeve which my surgeon recommended at our initial consultation. He did so due to my age as well and based off of him not knowing a few details about me. But I did research and also have a mother who had the bypass over 15 years ago and was and has still been successful with it. I chose it bc I love sweets and feel the need to have them often. I also didn't really eat alot before I just ate the wrong things bc that's kinda how I was brought up, eating more of the yummy ribs, baked mac'n'cheese, cubed steak and things rather than healthy. The RNY has one of the best features for that which is the dumping syndrome. So I have not choice now but to ear right or I will get extremely sick. I believe the sleeve can have that effect too but no other like the RNY. I forgot to mention after my surgeon suggested the sleeve, I had blood work done and they determined I was .5 away from being diabetic (my A1C was 6.0) and only the RNY cures diabetes. Sleeve or bypass? Please give me advice!
Nicki24 replied to Nicki24's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
See I'm ok with out bday cake or sweets in general and actually I kinda want the dumping syndrome so that if I ever do get that random urge for sweets I can't eat them. I want to give up bad foods for life not just for a few months then tell myself it's ok every once in awhile then that turns into the exact same eating habits I'm currently trying to break then I've gained weight and back where I started. I think the bypass will give me a better chance to keep away from the wrong foods longer but everyone I talk to says sleeve is the way to go bc it's less risky and less invasive. I don't want to make the decision to have the sleeve just bc I'm scared of the risks of bypass if bypass would be a better option for me. Sent from my SM-G900T using the BariatricPal App -
Sleeve or bypass? Please give me advice!
Nicki24 replied to Nicki24's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon recommended sleeve right off the bat without asking me any questions but only bc I think his practice is trying to do away with bypass altogether he said it was my decision tho and than proceeded to sell me like sleeve was a Mercedes saying they're the same thing except less invasive and less risky and less long term complications than bypass he also said that the weightloss rate is slightly higher with bypass but could have the same outcome with sleeve. My eating habits have of course improved during preop but before I struggled with over eating and poor food choices. I have a weakness for Mexican food and still find my self craving it daily and sometimes giving into it. Not a big sweet eater or a snacker. Sent from my SM-G900T using the BariatricPal App -
@@Cervidae - I've been tested up and down, left and right for PCOS! I had an ultrasound to check out my ovaries but there weren't any cysts. I had my blood tested to check for PCOS and it came back negative. All my doctors assumed I had PCOS because I have all the classic symptoms but nope, I'm good in that regard lol... @@Sajijoma - Wow, sounds like you got the short end of the stick Sorry you go through that. My periods aren't super heavy, but they are very painful and fraught with symptoms. I don't know 100% if I'm done having kids... the deal is I agreed to carry one baby and my partner is carrying the other (I'm a lady married to a lady). If for some reason she's incapable of getting pregnant I need to keep my oven fresh in case I have to bake another bun. I'm HOPING I'm done but I can't say for sure that I am. I didn't know you could get your uterine lining removed. I'll probably do that after baby number 2 is born since we don't want more than 2 kids (if we can help it - there's always the risk of multiples when you use artificial insemination with fertility drugs). I also don't want to remove all the parts because of the hormones. My mom had a full hysterectomy when she was 39 because her period pain was unbearable (must be hereditary because I'm the same way). But her hormones were all out of whack because she lost her ovaries. I don't know if I want to rid myself of the organs but it sure would be nice to kill my period forever! Will probably research BC pills to find something that works for me.

He wasn't married, I have been to his house and met his coworkers and friends etc. the one weird thing is that he did not want to go to church with me?! (Because he said he needed to go to confession but then he would never go!) so yeah I definitely think it is potential bs in the sense that he wanted to break up and didn't have a good reason so he came up with one. Basically, he is a commitment phobe. I'm still friends with him on Facebook but we are not really talking at the moment

This is in "ladies only" but I don't really care if men read/respond to it (though I have no idea why this would interest menfolk) so... just a disclaimer. Ever since I fell in the "morbidly obese" category my periods have been irregular. Usually I could count on my period to come every other month. Each time I got my period it would come with wicked PMS and menstrual cramps that rival labor pain - funny, when I gave birth and reached 8 cm I thought to myself "Huh, this is what my worst menstrual cramps feel like." Just so people know what kind of hell I've lived with each period! I'd have to take 4 Advil and 1 hydrocodone every 4 hours just to manage the pain. If I missed a dose, I'd be curled up on the floor and weeping. And when my cramps woke me in the middle of the night and I had to wait 45 minutes for the medicine to kick in... unbearable. Anyway, after I had my baby my periods blessedly vanished (probably due to breastfeeding for 6 months). Got my first period 9 months postpartum - no PMS, no pain, just blood. Thought I was just lucky. Periods started up every 2-3 months, painless, just blood. I thought I was living the dream. Then I lost 30 pounds and now it seems like my hormones are sorting themselves out again. I am suffering from my monstrous PMS again and feel the volcanic buildup of menstrual cramps. It's normal to see a regularization of menstruation after losing weight, yes? Anyone here go from periods every 2-3 months to going back to a 28 day cycle? I guess this is kind of a back-handed NSV I'm not particularly excited about this one. My uterus is retiring from childbearing so if anyone can recommend BC methods that stop periods and don't cause a surge in appetite I'd appreciate it. I hate having my period!!!

Yeah don't listen to people who tell you to stop losing weight. I can see if you were in mid onederland or something but 300 lbs. Yeah it's bizarre that they'd say that. Plain and simple they are full of it and just want to keep you from succeeding either that or they're being phony. I'm relatively new to the weight loss surgery game but I think life has a messed up way of trying to bring you down when you're winning and people can be down right evil. Just ignore them or make them feel stupid if it annoys you that much but you keep going toward your goal and don't let anyone's bs hold you back. Do not listen to them I don't think they have good intentions. I think they're just trying to throw wrenches in your plan.

So far I have had no real stall. They are busy and BCBS Fed lists them as a center of excellence. Cheaper out of pocket for me. I meet for consult the 18th. Can't wait! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I fell like im not getting full
GSleeve822 replied to hamoudi's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
You're hungry cuz you're not eating... Clear liquids have never been a meal and provide minimal nutrients. you'll feel better when you're on full liquids. also, being around all that food probably had more to do with head hunger than anything else. I would avoid those situations if possible for a while.. you won't find me sitting at a restaurant or anything bc of that very reason! Sent from my SM-G900T using the BariatricPal App -
Just heard from my Surgeon's staff today that ABS has raised the goalpost and is now requiring a TWO YEAR monitored group nutrition program before they'll approve GBS. They also say that IPA hasn't approved ANY of their requests since the first of the year. Any suggestions? I could be dead in two years, with my comorbidities combined with a BMI of nearly 50, if I don't have this surgery. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

High Protein Diet vs. Counting Calories?
determinedtolive replied to carolina07's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm ok with not eating any of those things but have read a few websites that say if you can tolerate dairy then it's ok to eat in moderation. I'm not able to go full Paleo because I can't afford to feed a family of 4 nothing but grass-fed, organic foods. I decided I'm just going to try to eat as close as I can. Considering how I've been eating for most of my adult life, even eating as closely as possible will still benefit me tremendously. I also think that if I can kick the crappy food before surgery, I'll have an easier time afterwards. -
High Protein Diet vs. Counting Calories?
determinedtolive replied to carolina07's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor and the majority of the doctors that I've talked to are calorie focus. Which is fine and I understand that is what works for most of their patients. For me, calorie counting and writing everything I eat is a nightmare! It stresses me out so I was curious to see if anyone had a different diet focus that worked for them and gave them the same results or better results. A high Protein diet (Atkins) worked for me in the past, but I wasn't sure if anyone one had tried his approach after having the sleeve done. I'm not a fan of sugar-free products either. I like to eat real foods with no chemicals or ingredients that I can't pronounce I'm opting for an organic, free range, grass fed meats and stay away from chemicals as much as possible. I am trying to adopt a more Paleo way of eating which I think will compliment my sleeve very nicely. Paleo's (from what I've read so far) believe that if you are eating nutritiously you won't have to worry about calories. Your body will let you know when you've had enough. With that being said, I'm rather anal so I'll probably log for the first several months only to make sure I'm eating enough calories versus too much. -
Sarah, my husband and I are both trying to get the sleeve. We have BCBS Fed and live in AZ. Our surgeon's office hasn't made any demands that we need to lose any weight prior to surgery nor do they believe in the pre-op liquid diet just prior to surgery. After reading so many people say they had to lose 5% before surgery, I am kinda worried now. I am currently banded but had an unfill 3 months ago and have gained about 15 pounds (last I checked). My husband has never had bariatric surgery. Thank you

I have a good friend that does approvals for BC/BS. While they are not my insurance carrier, it was interesting to see the process from her perspective. She said that she rarely if ever denies bariatric surgery if the BMI is over 35. The rest of the hoops you jump through are just a formality. My surgeons office knew exactly what I needed to do and how to submit each part of the requirements. I needed a letter from my primary doc stating she had supervised my diet and exercise for at least 6 mos. They didn't require a log or any notes. There was no minimum weight to be lost prior to surgery either. Your surgeon's office should be your best resource.

What made you chose bypass vs sleeve?
eoconnell24 replied to vandernoordh's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was also dead set on the sleeve. After my initial consult with my surgeon (who told me it was up to me which one I wanted) I started doing a LOT of reading and research. One thing that is consistent no matter what book, pamphlet, success story etc you read is that you have to be 100% honest with yourself through the whole process or you won't be as successful. I had chosen the sleeve bc I didn't think I needed the negative reinforcement of dumping, not thinking I have a problem with sweets or fried food. But once I began to really be honest about my relationship with food I realized that I do eat those things more than I initially wanted to admit (let's be honest, if I didn't I most likely wouldn't be overweight enough to be considering WLS in the first place lol). So I went back to my surgeon to talk to him about it and I ended up switching to RNY. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
So far there are lots of hoops. 6 months supervised diet, food journal, sleep study, EGD, echocardiogram, chest X Ray, psych evaluation, pulmonary function test, and EKG. I have MHS as my carrier. It has been interesting but I know it will be worth it in the end.Have you been approved yet? I have indiana hip as well and was turned day 1st go. Turned in 2 months of food journals, did pulmonary test, echo test, and some stool test, and now resubmitted tomorrow. I am almost 8 months into this and ready for an approval. Nervous tho because my pulmonary test was 62% bc I was sick. Nervous! !! Any more feedback would be great! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using the BariatricPal App

I had some "buyer's remorse" for the first few weeks after surgery. Then, when I realized that I was actually losing weight, I got over that (mostly). I am now almost two years post-op and am 119 lbs lighter than at my highest weight. I have a normal range BMI, and I am able to buy and wear fun clothes. I feel amazing and am no longer headed down a path of poor health like my parents. Even with all of those successes, I still occasionally "miss" comforting myself with food. Food was my drug. I was addicted. I will always be in recovery. I have had enough successes now that I can see that, but sometimes the regrets are still there bc it is so different from the way everyone else around me eats and lives. So, buyer's remorse is common. Most of the time my only regret is that I didn't have the surgery sooner. But every now and again I miss the seemingly easy act of eating to solve almost any problem. You are not alone. If you are anything like me, those feelings will come and go. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Anyone ever thought:"I can do this on my own, I don't need the sugery"
BCs 1000 replied to Killian's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost large amounts of weight numerous times over the past 20 years, usually I would get down to a BMI of around 30-35. I would lose for six months, maintain that weight for less than a day, gain it all back (plus a few extra pounds) over three months, maintain that high weight for a year or two, get fed up, start losing again. When I started this roundabout I was 160lbs, in the end I was 256. Last time, I didn't get fed up, I gave up. I felt beaten. I knew there was no point losing again as I would end up heavier, but I also knew I couldn't live with a BMI of 50. -
Having Lap-Band to Gastric Sleeve revision
littlebare replied to littlebare's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Some drs use it and some dnt. Mine does bc he says that he monitor it there was to become a leak (bile) or infection bc then it would drain out and he could catch it to fix it. Otherwise he said he wouldn't know till it was to late. So even tho is sucks I'd rather be safe. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using Tapatalk -
Frustrated with this long WAIT to get a surgery date
tiffanymarie6997 replied to Maggie Journey's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have Anthem BC/BS. My surgery was approved about 4 days after everything was submitted, and my surgery is now only 9 days away! Maybe it won't take as long as they are saying....they're probably telling you worst case scenario so if you don't hear anything after a few days you're not in panic mode. -

Frustrated with this long WAIT to get a surgery date
shrinkingkimber replied to Maggie Journey's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too have BC BS and had to jump through all the hoops you did. I finished everything on April 1 however due to a medication that I am on that suppresses my immune system I can't even have my surgery till after June 2 which led to a surgery date of June 9. So believe me I understand having to wait a long time after finishing the requirements. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
My doctor also does not require a pre op diet. I asked him about it bc I was also concerned. He said it doesn't make a difference surgery wise and it only makes the patients more stressed. He did however say do not go crazy and taper down 20%. (Whatever the heck 20% means) Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
