Am I recovering TOO fast?
Arabesque replied to JustJovi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyone recovers differently & can or can’t tolerate different things at different times. Not everyone experiences temporary changes in their senses taste &/or smell. Some can drink cold drinks easily while others find warm or hot drinks easier & more soothing. Some people are advised (by their surgeon) to progress through the stages more quickly while others need to stay at a stage longer. You won’t really feel your restriction (a tightness across your chest) until you’re eating more solid foods & the nerves that were cut during the surgery are healed. The pain you initially felt would have been from stressing, straining or irritating your healing tummy. You shouldn’t use your restriction or discomfort as a signal you’ve eaten or drunk too much or too fast. Not everyone dumps. Less than 30% with sleeve & less than 40% with bypass. But it is easily managed by avoiding those foods that cause it (fats &/or sugars) which you should be doing while you’re losing weight. In time even those who do dump may find they can eat a small amount of these foods without issue. It is important to follow your plan. Remember all because you can doesn’t mean you should. The plan is in place for a reason. Initially to protect & support your healing tummy (think of all those sutures & staples holding your tummy together) & then to support your weight loss (awareness of portion sizes, calories, nutrition, food choices, reflect on old eating habits & establish new habits, etc.) Conversations with your surgeon & dietician would be of benefit to ensure you are making the best choices - behaviours & foods. If your surgeon feels you are healed enough to progress more quickly, they’ll let you know what you are able to do & eat now. I am worried you chose to eat cake at 4 weeks post surgery. It was your choice but was it a self sabotaging behaviour? Cake at week 4? What will you eat in subsequent weeks? Only you know the answer to this. Maybe a conversation with a therapist will help. And yes you will lose weight while your calorie intake is in deficit even eating cake but your focus should be on the nutritional value of what you are eating when your intake is low. Protein, protein, protein then vegetables & eventually some fruit & complex multi/whole grain carbs. -
Tips/Tricks to get thru the 2 wk pre-op liquid diet??
mcipanda replied to longhaul68's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Love that you can have any/all non starchy veggies. Sounds like it isn’t much but it really is! For the shakes, I treated them like mini meals.. At breakfast, I made a coffee shake using latte flavored protein shakes and sipped slow. At lunch, I made a peanut butter banana chocolate milk shake with banana extract, a chocolate protein shake and PB2 peanut butter powder. For dinner, have a protein shake and some fajita seasoned sautéed veggies. For a snack, try having a strawberry banana shake (Fairlife) blended with ice. I was really afraid of the 2-week diet, but it flew by. The key is to keep it interesting. Have cauliflower “rice” with veggies, for example. My biggest worry was the doctor opening me up, seeing my liver covered in fat, then closing me up and saying “nope.” It happened to others on these forums, so the fear kept me in line. It was also a great prep experience for the weeks after surgery when you can only have liquids. Hope some of this is helpful -
Tips/Tricks to get thru the 2 wk pre-op liquid diet??
BigSue replied to longhaul68's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The pre-op diet is one of the most difficult parts of the WLS process. It can vary greatly from one surgeon to the next, and even between patients for the same surgeon (for example, I've read that some surgeons require a more strict pre-op diet for patients with a higher BMI and/or who carry more weight in the abdomen), but remember that it is for the safety of your surgery, to shrink your liver so your surgeon has good access to your stomach. You are trusting your surgeon to cut you open and rearrange your digestive system, so it's important for you to do your part in getting your body ready for surgery. As for tips and tricks, it depends on what's allowed on your pre-op diet, but sugar-free Jello and sugar-free popsicles are helpful if they're allowed (also for the post-op diet). A strategy I used during my pre-op diet was to get a lot of samples of different brands and flavors of protein shakes, so I had a variety and it helped me to figure out what I liked in preparation for using post-op (but be aware that many people report a change in taste after surgery, and after stocking up on protein shakes they liked before surgery, they realize they can't stand the same shakes after surgery). Good luck! -
Tips/Tricks to get thru the 2 wk pre-op liquid diet??

I’m starting my 2 week liquid diet on 4/12 and feeling unsure I’ll be able to manage it. My RNY is 4/26 and the nutritionist is allowing me any and all non-starchy vegetables but dear lord…will bone broth and protein shakes hold down the beast within?? I’ve lost about 13 lbs since January with just very clean high protein eating. HW- 276 CW- 263 and 5’8”. Why do some programs allow lean chicken at dinner and others are so adamant about liquids/purées? Anyone have any tips/tricks to get thru this period? Very excited for this lifestyle turnaround! Thanks in advance for any advice :)- 16 replies

I'm getting so frustrated, 7 months out and almost 2 months stalled
NP_WIP replied to SuziDavis's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The support group nutritionist said that even though stalls are normal and part of the body adjusting, must stalls after the honey moon phase are due to the amount of protein we are consuming and we should start looking at macros at that point (60-80g protein anything above can become fat, 50-60 carbs net if lifting/HIIT, 30g fat). I have seen members of the group have slow losses around month 6 (less than 6lbs per month) and come back with a 15lb loss the next month. But if you are not loosing at all for 2 months, I will call the Doc and see if they can help you. I know you can send the nutritionist your food log and she can review to see if something can be tweaked. -
Post op calories per day?
mcipanda replied to mcipanda's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I never did get an answer to my calories question… my nutritionist just reiterated that the calories matter less as long as the following are true: - get your 70-90 grams of protein per day no matter what (I am in soft foods stage) - get your 64oz of fluids every day (and I’m allowed to count protein shakes and milk as fluids) - no more than 5g fat per serving - no more than 5g sugar per serving When I watch these rules, I end up with around 700-850 calories per day and I’m steadily losing. If I don’t get enough protein or water, I stall over the next two days. Oddly, I noticed that if I drink artificially sweetened things like Gatorade Zero, I stall out. She said I may be insulin sensitive where my brain sees the fake sweetener as the real thing and releases insulin to counter it. I try to have maybe one of these drinks every two days to get my Miralax in. Not sure if any of this helps but I hope there’s a nugget in here that adds some value 😊 -
I’m surprised you haven’t been prescribed any anti nausea meds. Also wonder if it’s a sensitivity to something you’re eating. What if you try sipping a protein shake on your way home to help offset the afternoon nausea. Grazing is fine. Many do graze or eat several smaller meals. It just depends what you’re grazing on & if you’re still keeping to your daily total calorie & portions sizes & meeting all your goals. For example you make an appropriate meal and eat it over two or three sessions.

Two Year Surgery Anniversary - Continued Success!
Blueslily posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Hello All, I am so excited today. This is my 2-year anniversary. I met with my surgeon today for my 2 year follow up and I do not have any issues or medical complications. I started the journey at 235 lb. Today I am holding steady in the 140s. Yes, almost 100 lbs. I do not have any complications. I am still adhering to my program. I am not food deprived in any way. I feel really blessed. I came to this site when I was doing research and when I started the journey. I stopped being a regular here maybe about a year post surgery. I just wanted to share to people who are starting the journey or are early on in the process, be careful because sometimes there's negativity here or sometimes there are some scary stories about scary outcomes. Each person has their own unique journey. I feel really blessed that I did not have any complications and that it was not really hard to adhere to my program. I will be honest, when I first got home from the hospital, there was quite an adjustment. But most of those adjustments are due to your body going through the healing process. So the challenges that you experience right when you get home are not the same as you go through the process. I also want to share with newcomers that you really want to do your emotional work before you start this commitment and you want to be really clear and honest with yourself that your motivation is healthy and that you're doing this for the right reasons. If you need to work on yourself emotionally, this surgery is not going to do that work for you. All the best to everyone going through the process. Don't have any shame about choosing this option. There's still only a couple people in my life that know, and I'm totally fine with that. I don't have any shame about it, it's just that I'm sure some people won't understand the choice. That's okay because they don't have to. I made this choice because I wanted to be healthy. And today, on my two year anniversary, I am healthy! Take care of yourselves everyone. Success is possible. It just requires that you do your part in the work. -
Constant pain during work
summerseeker replied to Veritas34's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am going through a similar thing. I begun volunteering in a charity one day a week. Its very physical for me and entails lots of steps and carrying. I come home drained and aching all over. My calories are low, 1000 to 1200 so I run out of energy quickly and need to eat a protein bar and drink a glass of milk just to get me through. When I get home I collapse on the sofa. I need to build up my muscle mass again. I hope it will get easier in time because I love this little job -
March 23 buddies yet?
GeorgieLynn replied to ceri84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are doing great! This isn't magic and as you've read many times everyone is different. You are still recovery and you just need to be concerned with following your plan and getting your fluids and then protein. Keep your head up and only weigh once a week. Also remember the lower your BMI the less pounds you are going to loose when comparing yourself (dont) to someone with a much higher BMI. We should be talking about percentages of excess weight instead of pounds/kilos lost. As percentages generally match long term. Increase exercise in small incriminates as you can tolerate and stick to your prescribed diet and you will succeed! -
I have the same issues and its due to muscle wasting. I have started with doing some resistance training and have noticed a small difference. I lost over 100 lbs myself. make sure you are getting enough protein and I would suggest water aerobic. this will help build muscle but decrease the workload on your joints that are already taking a beating with physical labor. Speak to your nutritionist or doctor as well for the best recommendations for your specific issues.

Constant pain during work
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to Veritas34's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
First of all, congratulations on your progress! That is amazing!! Second, I echo @Saxons. Even if you have hit your protein goal every single day since surgery, muscle loss is an inevitability. Additionally, after having lost so much weight, the way we carry ourselves changes which can lead to new aches and pains as our bodies adjust. Adding in some weight/resistance work will help build those muscles back up and help your body adjust to its new shape and weight distribution. -
GBP exhaustion and shortness of breath When does the exhaustion and brain fog and weakness get better?
summerseeker replied to Kels WG's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It can be a rough ride in the first few months. Be really kind to yourself, this a a big surgery and we need time to adjust to all the new things we need to learn. The anaesthetic makes you feel spaced out for a while Once I got to the liquid goals, I felt incredibly so much better. Then as @Happy with two says I came off my BP meds too. This stopped me feeling dizzy. It took me a few months to get to enough calories inside me so that I had energy to do my daily chores. I am not a spring chicken. Little by little, my calories increased and I could do more. I always carry a protein bar and a drink when I am out. At times my energy levels still drop and I get a glass of milk or a skinny latte and a protein bar to get me through. Listen to your own body, rest as much as you can, treat yourself like a princess for a while. This time will quickly pass and you will be flying along again -

Any April Surgery Dates?
longhaul68 replied to rokse23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery date was bumped from 04/17 to 04/26. I was pretty upset for about 15 minutes but the surgeon had to reschedule his day. I had just started the liquids that morning and when I got off the phone with the coordinator I made myself eggs with avocado and hot sauce. I like having the extra sets to prep myself mentally and gather my proteins and liquids. So, onward and upward for the 26th! -
I am 6 weeks out from RouxNY . I lost 30 lbs in 4 weeks. The last 2 weeks 3 lbs. Is this a stall as well. Also really struggling with getting 64ounces of fluid snd 90 grams of protein I . Will this hurt my progress?

4 Days Post Op Gastric Sleeve!
jthebutterfly posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
On the 3rd of April i was scheduled for my gastric sleeve. That went great. i woke up with tons of pain all in my shoulder and belly. I had a extremely hard time drinking water but day 4 and it’s been much easier for me to get down the clear liquid broth that my mum made for me. It was really hard for me the first couple of days as i felt extremely nauseous and suffer with ‘Emetophobia’ so as you can imagine this has been a very hard experience none the less. I was in hospital for 2 days and was sipping on my fluids enough to be sent home which was great as the hospital was very great, welcoming and attentive i just became really home sick the third morning i was there so glad they discharged me that day. I am currently taking laxative for number 2, paracetamol for baseline pain and acid reflux medication i forgot the name but i’ll make another post maybe later on ever medication i’m taking. My 5 incisions are feeling a little sore but nothing i can’t handle but they are getting particularly itchy. I have been taking powerade zero sugar, gatorade zero sugar and Sustagen for protein in the morning my stomach has been able to tolerate that well so i’ve been enjoying that. for lunch i had a beef that was boiled in fresh coriander and yummy potatoes. (the broth was strained) hahaha. right now just focusing to up my fluid intake as much as possible as i don’t want to be dehydrated and follow my surgeons instructions with the broth and protein milk which has been going good. 4th day has been amazing for me. I was super emotional the first 3 days but today has been great for me. I’ve lost 5KG which is great pre op i lost 3KG and post op i’ve lost 2KG. Any tips or tricks or suggestions from fellow sleevers please comment below i’d really appreciate the advice. Any post op sleevers the same time as me please leave a comment i’d love to see how you guys are coping. Stay safe xx -
Hair Shedding & Hair Loss
vsg2410 replied to greekgoddess2468's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m going through the same thing. I am taking an extra hair skin and nails supplement and making sure I hit my protein goals. I’ve also started using Nioxin - a hair regrowth shampoo, conditioner, scalp treatment set. A family member of mine used it when they had hair loss from chemo. It’s hard to say whether or not it works because I wouldn’t know otherwise but I’m hoping it’s doing something! -
Hair Shedding & Hair Loss
Spinoza replied to greekgoddess2468's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have had 3 cycles of really noticeable hair loss since my sleeve 16+ months ago. It's finally (I hope!) growing back. I suspect it won't be as thick as it once was but I am totally OK with that. By the time it's falling out the new hair is already growing. I have never seen any decent evidence that any supplement makes any difference. In the same way the people talk about 'breaking' a stall by twiddling with protein and fluids and exercise and goodness knows that else, I think that people might attribute the regrowth to whatever supplement they were taking at the time whereas really it was just gonna grow back anyway. Human nature. -
Bariatric Friendly Starbucks Coffees
Erin18 replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Coffee and tea is allowed on my plan. I drink coffee once in a blue moon tho. Soy, almond and coconut milk are all allowed on my plan and I have unsweetened vanilla almond milk and even before surgery. It tastes great in things, but non fat has more protein. It is hard to get in the calories. But super hard to get in the fluids and protein for me too. -
Bariatric Friendly Starbucks Coffees
Erin18 replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not a huge coffee drinker and they told me I can drink coffee and tea. I asked at my dietician appointment today. I know im not supposed to have sugary drinks and what not. That's why I'm asking what everyone's go to bariatric friendly Starbucks drinks are 🤣 to give me ideas if I want to get a Starbucks drink. I see a lot of people getting a shot of expresso. 2 packets of zero calorie sweetener, in a large cup and they fill the rest with their protein shakes. But due to the fact I can't stomach protein shakes, I wanted something that I don't have to add it in. I saw another Starbucks recipe for bariatric patients for the pink drink. -

I am a little over 3 months post-op. I have lost close to 60 pounds now. I would like to lose another 20 pounds, and am on track to do that. I sometimes worry that I will lose too much but I know I'm just being ridiculous. 😂 I feel good even though I am still having issues meeting protein and fluid goals. I think I am going to go back to having protein soups for lunch to help with that. I've been trying to up my calories but having a hard time going much over 600-700 a day. I have tried all kinds of meat and veggies at this point and have only had issues with some chicken thighs one time, when I ate too much, too fast and got the foamies. All of my rings, shoes, and clothes are too big. It is expensive to lose weight. Today, I had someone not recognize me, which was wild. -
Bariatric Friendly Starbucks Coffees
Smanky replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I imagine Starbucks iced coffees etc are absolute calorie bombs due to the fat and sugar. Honestly, I'd be taking this time post-op to wean yourself off drinking your calories, and especially in the early months drinks really need to have a protein focus. I was never given a coffee restriction (I was offered coffee the first night in hospital), so once my stomach had some time to heal, my daily treat was a small soy latte, no sugar. Soy has a good amount of protein in it, and a small soy latte is an acceptable 75 calories. -

Recidivist replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First, you should ask your surgeon about his/her guidance on caffeine after surgery. Most surgeons don't want you to consume caffeine for a certain period. (Mine recommended a year after gastric bypass, which is when I resumed drinking coffee.) I think the only acceptable option would be black coffee, with skim milk and artificial sweetener if you like. (That's my go-to drink every morning, made at home.). You really shouldn't do anything with sugar or fat after surgery, including whole milk, syrups, whipped cream, processed sugar, etc. Any of those would be empty calories when you should be prioritizing protein. When your surgeon says you can have caffeine, you could do an iced coffee with skim milk, but I'm not sure there is any way to make a Frappucino bariatric-friendly. -

I'm one year and 2 months out from MGB. I had my surgery in Egypt (self paid) end of January 2022. Starting weight 149 kg, current weight 78.8 kg (this morning). This forum has been a huge help for me since I did the surgery without any proper research which is not something that I'd usually do but I was really frustrated and fed up with trying to lose weight and not getting any lasting results. I'm not currently following any specific diet and I eat whatever I want (in very small quantities) - please don't tell my doctor haha. I eat my protein first, followed by vegetables and salad and then carbs if I'm still not full. I take 1/2 teaspoon of sugar with my morning coffee. Of course, I had to follow the program that was given to me after the surgery. I had a long stall for the past 3 months or so but luckily I'm losing again since I started fasting (the fasting month started 14 days ago). My current target is 70 kg (I'm 170 cm tall) and I can't wait to lose the last 9 kgs. I got a mountain bike when I was 120 kg and have been riding it around my house which helped with the weight loss. The longest distance for me was 8 km. It has been raining almost every night here and I've not been able to use the bike for almost 3 months or so.Hopefully the weather will improve soon. I'm working in a remote town and there is a small gym here. I'm to check it out next month. Here is a photo of me around 2013 that I found while organizing my laptop folders vs me this morning. Needless to say, life is getting better and better overall and I can't wait to try all the things that I've not been able to do because of my weight.
